39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”

40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
23:42 이르되 예수여 당신의 나라에 임하실 때에 나를 기억하소서 하니
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
예수님은 십자가에서 마지막 순간을 보낼 것이라고 제자들에게 반복하며 예언 하셨습니다. 십자가는 최악의 범죄자들을 위한 잔인한 처형 방법이었습니다. 심지어 로마 시민들도 어떤 심각한 범죄를 저질러도 이 처벌은 잘 안 받습니다. 십자가형은 상상할 수 없을 만큼 고통스럽고 끔찍한 장면이었습니다. 예수님은 손과 발이 십자가에 못 박혀 몸을 고통스럽게 내걸었습니다. 그의 몸은 몇 시간 동안 고통 속에 매달려 있었습니다. 학자들은 그가 십자가에 매달려 있는 시간이 6시간이라고 말합니다. 이 자세에서의 고통은 말로 표현하기 어려울 정도입니다.

Jesus repeatedly informed his disciples that he would live out His final moments on the cross, where He would endure the excruciating agony of the crucifixion. Crucifixion was a cruel and brutal form of execution reserved for the worst of the criminals. Even Roman citizens were spared from this punishment, no matter how serious their crimes. Crucifixion was unimaginably painful and horrific to witness. Jesus was nailed to the cross with nails through His hands and feet, His body hanging in agony for hours. Scholars say that he was on the cross for 6 hours. The suffering in this position is beyond words.
Jesus' agony went beyond just the physical pain of being crucified. He also endured unbearable emotional, mental, and spiritual torment. His suffering began with the betrayal of His disciples. Judas, one of His disciples, betrayed Him for thirty pieces of silver, handing Him over to the chief priests and temple guards. The other disciples, despite Jesus' emphasis on humility and service, argued over who among them was the greatest, betraying Him. Even after Jesus urged them to stay awake and pray in the Garden of Gethsemane, they fell asleep, abandoning Him. When Jesus was arrested, all His disciples fled, abandoning Him. Peter, who had claimed that he would never deny Jesus, denied Him three times.
Jesus' betrayal wasn't limited to His disciples; the crowds also betrayed Him. When Jesus made His triumphant entry into Jerusalem, the crowds hailed Him with shouts of "Hosanna!" But within days, swayed by money and manipulation, they cried out for His crucifixion, pressuring Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, to crucify Him.
So, let’s go into this story of the crucifixion. We’re going to read Luke 22:33-43

Jesus mocked by many
In Verse 33, they came to this place called the Skull (NIV).
"When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left." (Luke 23:33) This place, known as Golgotha in Aramaic, Calvary in Latin, and Cranion in Greek, all mean "skull." It might have been called that because it was a place of execution, or perhaps because the hill resembled a skull.
Jesus endured much mockery while on the cross. "The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, 'He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.'" (V.25) The Sanhedrin members were mocking Jesus. They knew about Jesus' healing power and His great ability. What they did not know was that Jesus stayed on the cross to save others.
Soldiers also joined in the mockery. "The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar and said, 'If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.'" (V.36-37) This wine vinegar was not some type of drink to help Jesus. It was cheap wine, prolonging the lives of the dying by having them drink it while they were crucified. They mocked him, saying, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself." They ridiculed him for being a powerful king but seeming to die without saving Himself.
마지막으로 십자가에 못박혀 있는 다른 죄인 중 한 사람도 그를 조롱했습니다. 오늘날 사람들도 조롱합니다. 뭔가 나쁜 일이 일어나면 하나님, 교회, 목사님들, 그리고 성도님들을 조롱합니다. 관련 없는 사건인 대도 조롱합니다. 조금만 관련이 있다고 하면 잘못된 논리로 조롱합니다. 어쩌면 예전에 교회와 관련이 있었을지도 모릅니다. 하지만 조롱은 하나님 앞에서 해서는 안 될 일입니다. 이것은 이웃을 사랑하는 사람이 해서는 안 될 일입니다. 우리는 조롱이 성도들이 가야 할 길이 아니라는 것을 이해해야 합니다. 그러나 다른 사람을 속이고, 조롱하고, 다른 사람들 뒤에서 이야기하는 사람이 바로 누구일까요?…
저는 우리 교회의 성도님들이 항성 서로 사랑하고 존중하며 신앙생활을 열심히 하시길 바랍니다.
The final mockery came from one of the criminals crucified with him. "One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: 'Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!'" (V. 39) He was a fellow dying criminal. Yet, he also mocked, saying, "Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!" What was his issue? He didn't really understand who the Messiah was. The Messiah wasn't someone who would rise up with power defeat everyone with a sword. Rather, Jesus was saving people from their sins by dying on the cross. Yet, people mocked and ridiculed him for it. Even the criminal dying alongside him mocked him. What right did he have to mock Jesus? He had no right and no reason, yet he still participated in the mockery.
People today also mock. When something bad happens, they mock God, the church, pastors, and believers. They mock unrelated events. When there seems to be just a tiny bit of relevance, they mock with flawed logic. Perhaps they were once related to the church. Mockery is something that should not be done before God. It's not something a person who loves their neighbor should do. We must understand that mockery is not the way for believers to go. But for some reason that person who scams others, who mocks others, who talks behind other peoples’ back…always seems to be a……
I pray that the believers at our church will always love one another and respect one another.
진정한 기쁨은 예수 그리스도를 믿는 데서 나옵니다.
이처럼 조롱이 만연한 가운데 변화된 사람이 있었습니다. "하나는 그 사람을 꾸짖어 이르되 네가 동일한 정죄를 받고서도 하나님을 두려워하지 아니하느냐'" (40절) 이 다른 사람도 죄인이었습니다. 그도 아마 예수를 조롱했을 것입니다. 그러나 십자가에서 그는 변했습니다. 그는 조롱을 그만 하고 예수님을 관찰했습니다. 그는 하나님을 경외하는 마음으로 예수를 바라보았습니다.

True Joy comes from believing in Jesus Christ.
Among the rampant mockery, there was a changed man. "But the other criminal rebuked him. 'Don’t you fear God,' he said, 'since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.'" (V. 40) This other person was also a criminal. He also probably mocked Jesus. Yet, he changed on the cross. He didn't stop at mockery but seemed to observe Jesus. He seemed to have looked at Jesus with a fear of God.
It's not clear when this change happened. It would have been during the six hours he was on the cross. However, during that time, he changed into someone better received something more valuable than anything he has received in his life.
"He said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.'" (V. 42) He must have heard about the kingdom of God directly or indirectly from Jesus. He believed that there was a kingdom of God beyond death. He pleaded to enter that kingdom.
We call the salvation of the thief on the cross "last minute salvation." He was saved at the last moment. Yes, he barely obtained salvation only in his last hours. He probably didn't know much of Jesus' teachings and had no time to obey or attempt "love your enemies." He's not a good example of salvation. Nevertheless, he was saved, becoming truly blessed. What do we call this? We call this grace, a gift of God.
예수님은 말씀하셨습니다. "내가 진실로 네게 이르노니 오늘 네가 나와 함께 낙원에 있으리라" (43절) 비록 그가 마지막 순간에 구원을 받았지만, 구원을 받긴 했습니다.. 구원은 이 세상에서 어떠한 것보다 더 크고 중요합니다. 그가 삶의 많은 부분을 놓쳤지만, 그는 마지막 순간에 구원을 얻었습니다. 얼마나 복받은 사람인가요! 어떤 사람들은 이 죄인을 보고 “나도 이 죄인처럼 죽기 직전에 하나님을 믿자!"고 말합니다. 이것은 매우 어리석은 생각입니다. 이 문제에 대해 빌리 그래햄은 다음과 같이 말했습니다.
예수님을 영접하는 것을 미루고 죽기 직전까지 기다리는 것은 위험한 도박입니다. 우리 중 그 누구도 우리가 언제 죽을지 알 수 없습니다; 매일 수천명의 사람들이 갑작스런 죽음을 맞이합니다. 그러나 구원을 미루는 어리석음보다 더 중요한 것은 기독교인이 누리는 기쁨을 체험하지 못한다는 사실입니다. 기독교인의 삶에는 기쁨이 없다고 생각하는 사람들도 있습니다. 사실 세상에서 행복할 권리가 있는 유일한 사람들은 기독교인들입니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 삶의 목적을 이해하고, 이 땅에서의 여정이 끝나면 어디로 가는지 알기 때문입니다. 그리고 사람이 예수를 영접하는 것을 미룰수록 그것은 더 어려워집니다. 왜냐하면 사람의 마음은 나이를 들수록 더 굳어지기 때문입니다. 우리 삶의 중심에 그리스도가 없으면 일상이 피곤하고 지루해집니다. 기쁨이 없어서 힘들고 단조롭게 됩니다. 모든 곤경 속에서도, 어떤 어려움이 있더라도 하나님의 자녀에게는 기쁨이 있습니다. 왜냐하면 기쁨은 우리 안에 계신 하나님의 영으로 인해 초자연적으로 생성되기 때문입니다.
그 죄수는 예수님을 믿을 기회라는 축복을 얻었습니다. 그가 죽기 직전 눈 앞에 놓인 갈림길에서 구원의 길을 택했습니다. 참으로 큰 은혜이죠. 그렇다면 왜 우리는 이렇게 세상사람들 이랑 있다가 마지막 순간에 구원을 받지 못할까요?
Jesus says, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise." (V. 43) Though he obtained last minute salvation, he still obtained salvation. Salvation is greater and more important than anything gained in this world. Despite missing much of life, he seized salvation in his last moments. How blessed a person he became! Some people look at this verse, and say “Let’s just believe in God right before we die like this criminal!” This is very foolish thinking. Billy Graham said this regarding this issue.
It is a dangerous gamble for one to deliberately wait until the end of life to settle things with Jesus Christ. None of us knows when we may die; for thousands, sudden death occurs each day. But more important even than the foolishness of delaying salvation is the fact we are losing the joy of being a Christian. There are some who believe that the Christian life lacks joy. As a matter of fact, the only people in the world who have any right to be happy are Christians, for they understand the purpose of living and know where they are going when their earthly journey is complete. The longer one waits to accept Christ the more difficult it becomes, for the heart of man grows harder with the passing of time. Without Christ at the center of our lives, daily routines become tiresome and tedious, a drudgery rather than a joy. No matter the troubles, no matter what the difficulties, there is joy for the child of God because joy is produced supernaturally by God’s Spirit that abides within us.
The criminal was blessed with the opportunity to believe in Jesus. As he saw this fork in the road, he took the path of salvation. What great grace. But how come we can’t be with the world and wait till the last minute to receive salvation. What is the issue with this? First of all, we don’t know when we will die.

그리고 둘째로, 삶에 기쁨이 없을 것입니다. 삶에 목적이 없을 것입니다.
어떤 사람들은 죽음의 직전에 가서도 어리석게도 잘못된 길을 택합니다. 오늘날, 우리는 인생의 마지막 갈림길이 바로 우리 앞에 있을 수 있다는 것을 알아야 합니다. 어떤 길을 택할 것입니까? 세상을 택하시겠습니까, 예수 그리스도를 택하시겠습니까? 기독교인으로서 무너졌다고 생각 하시면 다시 일어나 하나님께 우리의 삶을 드립시다.
마무리하겠습니다.
오늘 본문에서 한 쪽의 범죄자는 예수 그리스도를 비웃었습니다. 다른 한 쪽의 범죄자는 예수와 함께한 6시간 동안 삶을 변화시켰습니다. 두 사람의 차이는 무엇이었을까요? 변화된 범죄자는 예수를 원했습니다. 그는 예수와 영생을 함께 하길 원했습니다. 우리가 해야 할 일은 우리 마음의 문에 두드리고 있는 하나님의 소리에 응답하는 것뿐입니다.

A couple of days ago, there was an accident at Baltimore when a ship ran into a bridge. The bridge collapsed and currently death toll is at 6. The people who died didn’t plan on dying that day. Who would have thought that a ship would run into a bridge. The saddest thing is the fact that we don’t know whether they were Christian or not. We don’t know if they even had the chance to believe in Jesus.
And second of all, there would be no joy in life. There would be no purpose in life.
Some people still foolishly take the wrong path even at the brink of death. Today, we must know that the last crossroads of life may be right before us, thanks to Jesus carrying the cross for us. Which road are you going to take? Are you going to choose the world or Jesus Christ? If you think you have fallen off as a Christian, let us re-commit our lives to Him.
In today’s Scriptures, one criminal continued to mock Jesus Christ. The other criminal changed his life within the 6 hours he was with Jesus. What was the difference? The changed criminal wanted Jesus. He wanted to spend an eternity with Jesus. All we have to do is respond to that knock on the door of our hearts.
Let’s all together read Revelation 3:20
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”
