13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him. 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him and then release him.”

18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!” 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
23:20 빌라도는 예수를 놓고자 하여 다시 그들에게 말하되
23:21 그들은 소리 질러 이르되 그를 십자가에 못 박게 하소서 십자가에 못 박게 하소서 하는지라
20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
23:22 빌라도가 세 번째 말하되 이 사람이 무슨 악한 일을 하였느냐 나는 그에게서 죽일 죄를 찾지 못하였나니 때려서 놓으리라 하니
22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”
23:23 그들이 큰 소리로 재촉하여 십자가에 못 박기를 구하니 그들의 소리가 이긴지라
23:24 이에 빌라도가 그들의 구하는 대로 하기를 언도하고
23:25 그들이 요구하는 자 곧 민란과 살인으로 말미암아 옥에 갇힌 자를 놓아 주고 예수는 넘겨 주어 그들의 뜻대로 하게 하니라
23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
우리들의 삶은 선택의 연속이라 해도 과언이 아닙니다. 이 선택에는 배우자를 정하거나 자신의 진로를 설정하는 것과 같은 큰일에서부터 아침에 하루 입을 옷을 고르는 것과 같은 사소한 일까지 허다합니다.
It is not an exaggeration to say that our lives are a series of choices. These choices range from major decisions such as choosing a spouse or determining one's career path to minor ones like picking out what to wear in the morning.
극단주의 수니파 이슬람 무장단체인 이슬람국가(IS)가 2022년에 기독교인 남성 20명을 칼과 총으로 처형하는 영상을 공개했습니다. 그러면서 테러범 중 한 명은 “우리는 전 세계 기독교인들에게 형제들의 복수를 할 때까지 쉬지 않을 것”라고 말하며 전 세계 기독교인들에 대한 경고라고 언론은 보도를 쏟아냅니다.
이러한 영상들은 기독교인들 사이에 두려움을 심어 주기 위한 것이며 누구를 따라야 하는지를 폭력과 두려움 공포로 선택하게 하는 것입니다. 지금 우리는 이러한 극단적인 선택 가운데 놓여있거나 삶을 살아가고 있지는 않지만, 수많은 여러 선택 중에서 그 무엇보다 중요한 선택은 자신의 생명과 관계된 것, 즉 복음의 진리를 받아들이느냐 마느냐 하는 선택입니다.
이 선택 여하에 따라 영생을 얻을 수 있고, 아니면 영원한 멸망 가운데 빠져들 수도 있기 때문입니다. 본문의 빌라도는 이러한 중요한 선택의 갈림길에서 죄악과 비진리의 길을 선택함으로써 이천 년 기독교 역사 내내 성도들이 외우는 사도신경 가운데서 죄인 중의 죄인으로 등장하고 있습니다. 그러면 빌라도의 선택은 과연 어떤 면에서 죄악된 행동이였을까요?
In 2022, the extremist Sunni Islamist militant group, the Islamic State (IS), released a video showing the execution of 20 Christian men by sword and gunfire. One of the terrorists declared, "We will not rest until we take revenge on Christians worldwide," prompting media outlets to describe it as a warning to Christians globally.
Such videos are meant to instill fear among Christians and compel them to choose sides out of violence and fear. While we may not find ourselves in such extreme circumstances, the most important choice amidst countless others is whether to accept or reject the truth of the Gospel, which is closely related to our lives and relationships.
Depending on this choice, one can either attain eternal life or plunge into eternal destruction. Pilate, in the passage, emerges as the epitome of sin among sinners in Christian history, known among saints for centuries as the ultimate example of the sinner's sinners. So, what exactly made Pilate's choice sinful?
1.법을 어기고 자신의 인기에 연연했습니다.
유대 지도자들은 예수를 이미 신성모독자로 규정한 바 있습니다. 신성모독으로 간주된 유대인들에게는 돌로 쳐 죽이는 중죄였지만, 로마 지배하에 놓여 있었던 당시 상황상 사형권이 로마 정부에게 있었기 때문에 종교 지도자들을 포함한 무리들은 예수님을 로마 총독 빌라도에게로 끌고 왔습니다.
그들이 예수님께 붙인 죄목은 세 가지였습니다. 첫째는 ‘예수는 백성을 선동하여 반란을 일으키려 했다’ ‘둘째는 로마 황제에게 세금을 바치지 말라고 했다’ ‘마지막으로 자칭 왕이라 했다’ 였습니다. 빌라도는 법률 집행자로서 객관성에 따라 이 고소 사건을 검토해 본 결과 예수님의 무죄를 확신하게 되었습니다.
그는 이 고소가 유대 지도자들의 간계에서 비롯된 것임을 짐작했고, 사실상 예수님께서 하신 말씀 가운데 로마에 대한 반란의 의도를 도무지 찾을 수가 없었던 것입니다. 그래서 그는 단지 법정 소요에 대한 벌로 태형을 부과하여 석방하고자 했습니다.
그러나 유대 지도자들이 사주하는 말과 함께 있던 무리의 광기 어린 부탁에 못 이겨, 예수님에게 유죄 판결을 내렸으며 더구나 가장 극형인 십자가형에 처하고 말았습니다. 결국 그는 로마법에 충실해야 할 국가 관리로서 법을 객관적으로 집행하지 못하고 세속적인 자신의 인기에 연연하는 쪽을 택하고 만 것입니다.
1. Pilate violated the law and prioritized his popularity.
The Jewish leaders had already deemed Jesus a blasphemer. Blasphemy against the Jewish religion was a capital offense, but since the Roman government held the power of capital punishment at that time, religious leaders, along with a crowd, brought Jesus to Pilate.
They accused Jesus of three things: "He stirs up the people by teaching throughout Judea, from Galilee where he began, even to this place." "He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar." "He claims to be Messiah, a king." Pilate, as an objective executor of the law, reviewed the charges and became convinced of Jesus' innocence.
Pilate suspected that this accusation stemmed from the jealousy of Jewish leaders, and he could not find any intention of rebellion against Rome among Jesus' teachings. Therefore, he wanted to release Jesus as a customary penalty for the festival. However, he succumbed to the crowd's madness and sentenced Jesus to be crucified, the most extreme form of punishment. Ultimately, he chose to prioritize his popularity over upholding the law.
An official who is responsible for executing the law violating it publicly signifies a loss of qualification as an executor. Furthermore, it becomes a decisive factor in the society's corruption and degradation. If I had been in his place, I wondered what I would have done. Can you make the right choice, stand for the truth, and make the right choice among the madness?
기본적인 사회의 질서를 위해 법을 맡은 책임자가 이를 공공연하게 어긴 행위는 개인적으로는 집행자로서의 자격 상실을 의미하며 나아가서는 그 사회의 부정, 부패를 부채질하는 결정적 요인이 되는 것입니다. 만약 제가 저 자리에 있었더라면 어떠했을까? 라는 생각을 해 보았습니다. 여러분은 올바른 선택, 진실을 대변하며 광기 어린 사람들 속에서 올바른 선택을 하실 수 있으신가요?
우리는 위협 부담이 높을 때 진리를 대변한다는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 반대에 있는 사람들은 다른 쪽 사람을 존중해야 할 인격체로 보기보다는 해치워야 할 골칫거리로 보기 쉽습니다. 만약 빌라도가 진정한 용기의 소유자였다면 그는 어떤 결과를 초래한다고 하더라도 예수님을 석방했을 것입니다.
어려운 결정을 내려야 할 때 사람들의 압력이 미치는 효과는 어마어마합니다. 우리의 삶을 돌아보면 정말 많은 선택의 기로에 있었고 지금까지도 선택하며 이 자리까지 왔습니다. 그리고 앞으로도 더 많은 선택들을 하게되며 또 강요받게도 될 것입니다. 그러할 때 우리는 주변에 사람들의 말과 행동에 압도당하며, 사람들의 시선 때문에 올바른 선택을 하지 못하는 사람이 아닌, 주님을 더욱 의지하며 여러 선택 가운데주님의 뜻이 어디에 있는지를 분별하며 담대히 선택하며 나아갈 수 있는 저와 여러분이 되시기를 바랍니다.
It is not easy to stand up for the truth under high pressure. Those opposed to us may see us more as nuisances to be eliminated than individuals to be respected. When faced with difficult decisions, we must not be people who cannot make the right choice because of people's words and actions, but rather rely more on the Lord, discern where His will is among the various choices, and move forward boldly. I hope you and I will become such people.
2.양심의 소리에 귀를 닫았습니다.
굳이 죄목을 따지지 않는다고 해도 빌라도는 예수님께서 법정에 끌려오게 된 전후 상황과 예수님과의 대면을 통해 양심적 판단을 내릴 수 있었을 것입니다. 즉 그는 여러 제반 정황들로 미루어 볼 때 예수님께서 십자가에 못 박힐 정도의 중한 죄인이 아님을 분명히 알았지만, 자신의 정치적 기득권 유지에 급급한 나머지 양심의 소리보다는 신변 안전을 위한 가증스러운 타협 쪽을 선택한 것입니다.
양심은 하나님이 타락한 우리에게 남겨주신 당신의 형상 중 하나로서 시민법보다 위에 있는 규범이라 할 수 있습니다. 그러나 빌라도의 경우는 자신의 이권을 지키고 신변 안전을 도모하기 위해, 눈에 보이는 법마저 교묘하게 어기였으며, 그 내면적 양심을 속인 것은 어쩌면 당연하다 결과였습니다.
오늘날 우리 주변에도 수치를 모르는 사람들 마치 양심이 없는 사람들의 행동, 선악을 분간하지 못하는 무리들이 점점 더 많아지고 있습니다. 그러나 이러한 자들은 사회적으로도 법적인 처벌을 받겠지만 하나님의 형상을 무시하고 멀리한 대가로 엄중한 주님의 심판에 처하게 될 것입니다.
2. He Closed His Ears to Conscience
Even if Pilate did not bother to investigate the charges, he could have made a conscientious judgment based on the circumstances surrounding Jesus' trial and his encounter with Jesus. In other words, he chose the abominable compromise for personal safety over the voice of conscience, knowing full well, from various circumstances, that Jesus was not a serious criminal deserving of crucifixion but succumbing to the pressure to maintain his political power.
Conscience can be considered as one of the norms above civil law that God has left us as an image of Himself amidst our fallen state. However, in Pilate's case, to safeguard his interests and personal safety, he cunningly violated even visible laws, and deceiving his inner conscience may have been an inevitable consequence.
Today, there are increasingly more people around us who seem shameless, behaving as if devoid of conscience, unable to distinguish between right and wrong. However, such individuals will not only face societal and legal consequences but will also face severe judgment from the Lord for disregarding the image of God.
3.하나님의 진리에서 눈이 멀었습니다.
빌라도가 예수를 십자가에 못 박도록 내어준 것은 그 당시 법과 양심에 위배되는 행위였을 뿐만 아니라 하나님의 진리를 정면으로 거스르는 엄청난 오판이었습니다. 그것은 단순히 한 죄인을 오판하여 죽게 한 것이 아니라 하나님의 진리에 정면으로 도전하는 행위였으며 빌라도 자신의 인생에 있어서 하나님께 취할 수 있는 최악의 결정이라 할 수 있습니다.
비록 빌라도처럼 직접 하나님이신 예수님께 형을 언도하지는 않았지만 예수님의 처형에 동조했던 무리들도 동일하게 이 엄청난 죄악에 동참한 셈입니다. 이런 빌라도와 달리 우리 그리스도인들은 하나님께서 말씀하신 진리에 대해 단호한 입장을 취해야 합니다.
우리는 진리에 있어서는 절대적으로 타협이 있을 수 없습니다. 세상은 우리의 눈이 진리로부터 가려지기를 원하며 또 가려지게 하기 위해 여러 방법을 통해 저와 여러분이 진리에서 멀어지게 하고 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에 주님의 말씀과 보호하심이 없다면 살아갈 수 없음을 우리의 입술로 담대히 고백해야 합니다. 그리고 나와 함께 계시는 그 주님만을 의지하고 듣고 바라보는 저와 여러분이 되기를 소망합니다.
3. He Became Blind to God's Truth
Pilate's delivery of Jesus to be crucified not only violated the law and his conscience but was also a tremendous defiance against God's truth. It was not merely a misjudgment resulting in the death of one sinner but a direct challenge to God's truth, making it perhaps the worst decision Pilate could have made in his life.
Although he did not personally nail Jesus, those who agreed to Jesus' execution were equally complicit in this tremendous sin. Unlike Pilate, we Christians must take a firm stand on the truth that God has spoken.
We cannot compromise on the truth under any circumstances. The world desires to blind us to the truth and employs various methods to distance us from it. Therefore, without the Lord's words and protection, we cannot live. We boldly confess with our lips that we cannot live without the Lord's words and protection, and we hope that you and I will rely on and look to Him alone.
성도 여러분
우리는 하나님을 모르는 인생이 어느 정도의 죄악에까지 빠져들 수 있는지를 살펴보았습니다. 이는 바로 하나님보다 세상 사람을 먼저 의식한 선택의 결과라 하겠습니다. 빌라도 뿐만 아니라 우리는 너나 할 것 없이 사람들의 칭찬이나 비난 그리고 고통에 대한 두려움에 민감합니다.
그러기에 이 사람 저 사람눈치 속에서 다수의 견해에 따라 움직이고, 심지어는 자신의 삶의 의미와 가치관마저 남의 눈에 맞추기 쉽습니다. 또 그러다 보면 자신의 행동에 대한 책임마저 다른 사람에게 전가하게 됩니다. 우리는 많은 변명을 합니다.
‘어쩔 수 없는 환경 때문에’, ‘모든 사람이 그러니까 나도’, ‘부모님이 남편이 아내가 하지말래 그것이 아니래’등의 말을 하는 것 처럼, 지금 본문의 빌라도도 이렇게 자기의 손을 씻으며 발을 뼀던 것입니다. 그는 아주 공적이고 엄숙한 방법으로 자신의 죄악된 선택에 대한 책임을 회피하려 했던 것입니다. 하지만 이러한 책임으로부터 벗어나게 해줄 수 있는 것은 아무것도 없습니다.
Saints, We have seen how far a life without God can fall into sin, which is the result of choices that prioritize worldly people over God. Like Pilate, we are all sensitive to praise or criticism from others and even fear pain.
Therefore, we may move according to the opinions of others, and even our understanding of the meaning and values of our lives can easily be tailored to fit others' eyes. Moreover, we may eventually pass the responsibility for our actions onto others. We make many excuses.
"Because of circumstances beyond my control," "because everyone else is doing it, so why not me," "because my parents, husband, or wife told me not to do it," etc., just as Pilate washed his hands, trying to evade responsibility for his sinful choice in a very public and solemn manner. However, nothing can free us from this responsibility.
로마서 14:22(새번역) “그대가 지니고 있는 신념을 하나님 앞에서 스스로 간직하십시오. 자기가 옳다고 생각하는 일을 하면서 자기를 정죄하지 않는 사람은 복이 있습니다”
이 어지러운 세상 속에서 우리는 그리스도인으로서 복음의 진리를 향한 올바른 선택을 할 책임이 있으며, 그것은 오직 하나님을 우리 마음의 중심에 모심으로써 가능합니다. 날마다 말씀 안에서 선한 선택을 이루어 나갈 수 있도록 모든 일을 기도와 간구로 하나님께 아뢰십시오. 그러면 모든 지각에 뛰어난 하나님의 평강이 여러분의 마음과 생각을 지켜주실 줄 믿습니다.
빌립보서 4:6~7 (새번역) “아무것도 염려하지 말고, 모든 일을 오직 기도와 간구로 하고, 여러분이 바라는 것을 감사하는 마음으로 하나님께 아뢰십시오. 그리하면 사람의 헤아림을 뛰어 넘는 하나님의 평화가 여러분의 마음과 생각을 그리스도 예수 안에서 지켜 줄 것입니다.” 아멘
오늘 하루도 이 말씀을 붙들고 주님안에 거하시는 모든 성도님들 되시기를 기도합니다.
Romans 14:22 (New Living Translation) "You may have the faith to believe that there is nothing wrong with what you are doing, but keep it between yourself and God. Blessed are those who don’t feel guilty for doing something they have decided is right."
In this chaotic world, we, as Christians, have a responsibility to make the right choices for the truth of the Gospel, and that is possible only by placing God at the center of our hearts. Pray and plead with God for all things daily, and I believe that God's peace, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7 (New Living Translation) "Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." Amen.
I pray that all saints who dwell in the Lord hold onto this word throughout the day.
