20240319 [새벽묵상] 삶의 위기를 돌파하는 길 | The Path to Overcoming Life's Crisis (시/Ps 56:1~13)

1 Be merciful to me, my God,

    for my enemies are in hot pursuit;

    all day long they press their attack.

2 My adversaries pursue me all day long;

    in their pride many are attacking me.

3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

4     In God, whose word I praise—

in God I trust and am not afraid.

    What can mere mortals do to me?

5 All day long they twist my words;

    all their schemes are for my ruin.

6 They conspire, they lurk,

    they watch my steps,

    hoping to take my life.

7 Because of their wickedness do not let them escape;

    in your anger, God, bring the nations down.

8 Record my misery;

    list my tears on your scroll—

    are they not in your record?

9 Then my enemies will turn back

    when I call for help.

    By this I will know that God is for me.

10 In God, whose word I praise,

    in the Lord, whose word I praise—

11 in God I trust and am not afraid.

    What can man do to me?

12 I am under vows to you, my God;

    I will present my thank offerings to you.

13 For you have delivered me from death

    and my feet from stumbling,

that I may walk before God

    in the light of life.

We experience various difficulties and fears in life. Among many hardships and fears, overcoming them is said to be life itself. David is no exception in today's passage. Rather, he is someone who experienced greater crises and hardships than us in his life.

Because he lived in exile in Philistia, fleeing those who sought his life, David had to face desperate crises. So let's examine through Psalm 56 how David overcame various situations in the crisis of life.

1. We must trust and seek God in fear.

In the passage, David emphasizes multiple times that he relied on and sought God in the midst of life's crisis. In other words, even in the desperate crisis of fleeing threats from enemies and seeking refuge in Philistia, he continued to trust in the saving God until the end.

He absolutely trusted in the omnipotence of God, who even saves in the midst of the jaws of death, as mentioned in verse 4. Despite the extreme crisis of his life being targeted for death, he could not be afraid of those with mere flesh and blood because of his trust in God.

David did not fear his enemies. He poured out his heart and prayed to God, believing that He would help him. If we have such faith, we can overcome fear. We also live in various crises, big and small.

If we have absolute trust in God, we can overcome those obstacles. Since the Lord will never forsake us and will take care of us, when we open our hearts before Him, laying down all difficulties and fears before Him and talk to Him sincerely, we can truly hold on to Him and trust Him to move forward. I pray that the absolute trust in God, like David's in the passage, may firmly take root in our lives.

2. We must be convinced of God's righteous judgment.

Think about times when our lives face tremendous crises or sufferings due to unjust forces or people. If we cannot be sure that God will judge such evil people or forces someday, we may find it difficult to endure the tremendous crises in our lives.

In other words, if we do not have confidence in the principle of "blessings for good and punishment for evil" in God's judgment, we can only stumble in suffering and crisis. From this perspective, David shows us an example of how to deal with life's hardships and crises.

How much do you trust in this righteousness of God? If our faith in it is weak, let us once again hold on to the promise of the Lord, fully believing that the Lord will bring justice into our lives.

3. We must pray with tears to overcome life's crises.

The psalmist says in verse 8 that God has kept count of his tossings, and he has kept his tears in his bottle and recorded them in his book. He then asks God to put his tears in his bottle.

Here, the bottle refers to a leather bag in which shepherds carry water, asking God to preserve all the tears he shed without missing a single one. This means asking God to remember his pain and spiritual suffering and also a prayer of humble repentance acknowledging his own wrongs.

In other words, David deeply felt and agonized over the fact that the crisis he was currently facing stemmed from his own sin. He didn't just see the outward appearance of his suffering but understood the root cause of his suffering. Through David's tearful prayer of repentance, he receives forgiveness for his sins and leads a blessed life exalted by the Lord.

Through Psalm 56, David sets an example for us on how to overcome life's crises by trusting and seeking God, being convinced of His righteous judgment, and praying with tears. May the Lord help us to apply these principles in our own lives as we face various crises and challenges.

The prayer of tears described in James 4 has the ability to lead us out of life's crises and hardships. Are you tired and weary in your current life? Are you in a situation like a crying lion? Then, instead of being discouraged or hesitating just by looking at the current situation, I urge you to bring all your problems before the Lord in tears.

You have been told that none of the prayers we offer fall to the ground. However, within such tearful prayers, tears of repentance for the sins committed by you and me should also be included. In a way, many of these difficulties and hardships often arise due to our desires or selfishness.

Therefore, I hope that within the tearful prayers, both the difficulties in our environment and the deep-seated sins of you and me will be included, and that you and I will pray with tears.

4. We must wait for God's promises with thanksgiving and praise.

David offered thanks and praise as he experienced God's protection. He says in verse 10, "In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise." And in verse 12, he wanted to repay his vows to God.

We must also recognize God's grace and protection, and always offer thanks and praise to the Lord. We must not forget His blessings and guidance. David believed in God's promises and waited for them. We too must believe in God's promises, wait for them, and firmly believe that God will fulfill them in His time and season.

Because God's promises will surely come true, we must hold onto His word, wait for it, and walk with the Lord in faith.

Beloved saints! There is no life without crisis. Everyone experiences small or big hardships. No one goes through life without experiencing these things. Psalm 56, today's passage, shows us a life of faith in trusting God's protection and help even in difficult times.

Whether in the midst of various crises and hardships, or experiencing peace and comfort in life, we must trust in Almighty God, fully believe in His righteousness, and live relying on Him. It is through this faith that, through tearful prayers and holy sorrow, we can take one step closer to the Lord.

I pray that today, you truly seek God, believe in His protection and guidance, and have a day filled with thanksgiving and praise.
