20240312 [새벽묵상] 예배의 본질 | The Essence of Worship (시/Ps 50:16~23)

16 But to the wicked person, God says:

“What right have you to recite my laws

or take my covenant on your lips?

17 You hate my instruction

and cast my words behind you.

18 When you see a thief, you join with him;

you throw in your lot with adulterers.

19 You use your mouth for evil

and harness your tongue to deceit.

20 You sit and testify against your brother

and slander your own mother’s son.

21 When you did these things and I kept silent,

you thought I was exactly like you.

But I now arraign you

and set my accusations before you.

22 “Consider this, you who forget God,

or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:

23 Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me,

and to the blameless I will show my salvation.”

After delivering a divine rebuke concerning Israel's religious life, which was steeped in ritualistic worship, Asaph continues to critique Israel's hypocritical attitude. The wicked outwardly confess faith and recite God's commandments and covenant, yet internally they ignore, disdain, and even despise God.

They dwell among those who love God, joining in praise outwardly while harboring entirely different thoughts. Verses 16-20 depict their thoughts and actions. Though they speak of piety, they do not keep God's commandments. Moreover, they do not follow God's teaching but rather cast His word behind them.

They engage in thievery, violating the eighth commandment, and adultery, breaking the seventh. Furthermore, they bear false witness against their neighbor, violating the ninth commandment, and oppress their siblings (harshly criticizing and attacking others), causing grief to their parents. Hypocritical worshippers commit various sins against others, using the pretext of offering sacrifices to treat people negligently and exploit them.

We hold weekly Wednesday/Sunday worship services and also have morning prayers. When you come to every worship service, what is your mindset? Do you come thinking it's just the usual routine? Or do you come thinking, "Because it's my duty"?

As you attend various worship services, are you repeating the same habits and sins as if you still do not know God? Or are you focusing more on external forms like "being conscious of people" or "having attended church for a long time"? The reason why God refuses Israel's worship, as stated in today's passage, lies here. That is, although they offered worship with abundant sacrifices, their actions remained unchanged, still on an unlawful path.

We need to examine our worship attitudes and postures. Rather than thinking, "Because I am an official" or "Because I have been attending church for a long time," we should sincerely desire to know God, seek genuine transformation and growth in our lives, and pray with the heart of Jesus for one soul.

Asaph strongly rebukes this moral decay. In 1 John 4:21, it says, "And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother." However, they do not recognize God, who rebukes their sins but instead become arrogant, committing increasingly audacious transgressions.

The wicked take advantage of God's longsuffering to commit overt transgressions. They even misunderstand God's silence or tolerance towards their wrongdoing, thinking that God is indifferent or overlooks sin. In verse 21, there is even a tendency to view God as a single entity or to equate Him with rationality. But Asaph declares that God will never overlook the wicked's corruption.

As a wholly holy God, He will execute judgment in their presence. Therefore, Asaph paradoxically exhorts them to keep God's love and commandments concerning people. The prophet Isaiah also did the same.

Jeremiah 7:4-7 says, "Do not trust in deceptive words and say, 'This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord!' If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly, if you do not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm, then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your ancestors for ever and ever."

Zechariah also spoke the same words. Based on reverence for God, we should all become praised saints by correctly applying God's word and teaching in our lives through worship.

Verses 22-23 serve as the conclusion, summarizing the sins mentioned earlier while issuing a warning against the wicked and stating the conditions for true sacrifice. Asaph first calls for repentance from the corrupt Israelites in verse 22. He urges them not to persist in debauchery but to return to God and live truthfully.

Additionally, Asaph demands that the hypocrites change their ways before it is too late. In verse 23, Asaph suggests, as previously stated, that they offer voluntary sacrifices of thanksgiving and expect a moral purification in return.

He earnestly advises those who, like the hypocritical worshippers of that time, merely mimic worship while harboring wicked thoughts and behaviors, to now offer sacrifices of thanksgiving emanating from their whole being. Indeed, it is through such a life that saints can merit glorifying God.

The essence of sacrifice, worship, lies in gratitude to God. Worship is not merely a ritualistic act but an act of dedicating one's whole being and life to God. Only when offering such worship can we truly glorify God. Asaph, in the final part, once again clearly demonstrates to us the essence of true worship through the connection between desirable worship and life.

Beloved saints! God invites everyone to come before Him. Jesus also calls those burdened by the weight of life. However, there are misconceptions among us about the heart of God, or we tend to interpret and apply it in our favor.

Because God does not immediately discipline for sin and provides a period of grace, some may misunderstand, thinking that God rewards blessings instead of punishment for His pleasure. This misconception is particularly common among those who are knowledgeable about God's Word. They easily assert that any situation aligns with God's will because they believe they understand God well.

However, often it stems from selfish desires and is contrary to God's will. Since God calls us holy, we too, through worship and Scripture, through quiet time and prayer, must examine and ask, give thanks for His grace, and entrust our burdens and life's journey to Him, walking alongside Him today as saints.
