1 My heart is stirred by a noble theme

    as I recite my verses for the king;

    my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.

2 You are the most excellent of men

    and your lips have been anointed with grace,

    since God has blessed you forever.

3 Gird your sword on your side, you mighty one;

    clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.

4 In your majesty ride forth victoriously

    in the cause of truth, humility and justice;

    let your right hand achieve awesome deeds.

5 Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king’s enemies;

    let the nations fall beneath your feet.

6 Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;

    a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.

7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness;

    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions

    by anointing you with the oil of joy.

8 All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia;

    from palaces adorned with ivory

    the music of the strings makes you glad.

9 Daughters of kings are among your honored women;

    at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir.

10 Listen, daughter, and pay careful attention:

    Forget your people and your father’s house.

11 Let the king be enthralled by your beauty;

    honor him, for he is your lord.

12 The city of Tyre will come with a gift,

    people of wealth will seek your favor.

13 All glorious is the princess within her chamber;

    her gown is interwoven with gold.

14 In embroidered garments she is led to the king;

    her virgin companions follow her—

    those brought to be with her.

15 Led in with joy and gladness,

    they enter the palace of the king.

16 Your sons will take the place of your fathers;

    you will make them princes throughout the land.

17 I will perpetuate your memory through all generations;

    therefore the nations will praise you for ever and ever.

Today's passage, with its unusually long title and introduction, is known as a wedding song used in the grand wedding ceremonies of an anointed king. It is called the "Song of Love." In today's Psalm, the praise of the king as a groom and the description of the bride's beautiful figure are vividly depicted. This carries a profound redemptive significance, symbolizing the spiritual relationship between Christ and the Church during the New Testament era.

The composition of the Psalm reveals a dual focus: firstly, praising the king from various perspectives, and secondly, describing the bride. Through this structure and content, the author vividly presents the complete salvation of Christ and the glory of the holy Church.

Psalm 45 is known as the "Royal Psalm" or "Messianic Psalm." Thus, although today's Psalm may superficially appear as a secular love song of a king unrelated to religious content, it is indeed a profound redemptive song symbolically expressing the glorious union of Christ and the Church.

The portrayal of the king in today's passage is too noble to be considered merely human; it hints at the complete union of Christ and the Church, which will occur in the future. This interpretation is confirmed by verses 6 and 7, which are cited in Hebrews 1:8-9, referring to Jesus Christ as the Son of God.

1. Praise of the King as a Groom (1-8)

The author first emphasizes that his expression is not forced or flattery, but flows from inspiration deep within his soul. Then, the author sends the highest praise for the king's character, abilities, and reign. Here, the author depicts the glory of the king from various angles.

Firstly, in verse 2, the king's excellence surpasses all others. The king is described as one who has received abundant blessings and is full of grace and truth. In other words, the king is being sung as the most beautiful among men. While Saul and David's outward appearance was crucial for becoming kings, this passage speaks of different standards.

In verses 3-5, the king is portrayed as a great warrior who never loses. His heroic warrior figure fighting for justice is depicted in various ways. The king does not fight for personal fame or national expansion but only for truth, meekness, and righteousness. It is believed that only Jesus Christ can achieve complete victory.

In verses 6-8, the king is said to rule his people with fairness and justice. He not only sincerely loves righteousness but also thoroughly hates wickedness. He does not act violently like a tyrant but administers just governance according to fair and equal laws. Therefore, it is sung that his throne will be established forever.

However, in verse 6, the Psalmist calls the king "God." Deifying the king was common in ancient Near East; however, it was unacceptable in Israel. They only declared the king as a "son" or depicted him as close to God. For example, David is recorded as "like God's messenger" or "like God." There is no direct statement calling the king God.

2. Glory of the King's Bride (9-15)

Now, the attention is turned from the king to describing the glory of the bride. Verse 9 speaks of the bride's attire, while verses 10-11 offer advice to the bride, and verses 12-15 describe the wedding ceremony. The author beautifully depicts the bride's appearance.

Before the bride is led before the king, she is given words of instruction. In verse 10, it says, "Forget your people and your father's house." In other words, forget worldly and fleshly old lives and habits. Within us, there are still worldly desires and old habits that we have not yet abandoned.

Therefore, sometimes, unexpectedly, we experience these habits reemerging. Then, reflecting on oneself, one realizes, "Ah, there are still habits I don't know about. There are still many things I haven't let go of." Through this, one once again relies on the Lord. Do you have habits that you cannot abandon and give up?

If you still have some bad habits, we cannot change or transform these things with our own will. Only by the power of the Lord can we change and transform the undesirable habits and aspects within us. Therefore, we must acknowledge our weaknesses and come before the Lord. Only He can transform us and lead us on the right path. I hope that you and I confess that only the Lord can transform us and lead us to the right path.

Next, the bride should love and respect only the king as her groom, knowing him primarily and fully obeying his will. And in the latter half of verse 11, it says, "Worship him." This means dedicating oneself and showing loyalty as a bride. After discussing these four instructions, it describes the wedding ceremony.

Amidst the applause and cheers of the crowd, the king arrives at the banquet first, followed by the bride, escorted by her attendants, who then comes to the palace. This procession still takes place today, and the wedding procession symbolizes entering into a new life, whether today or in the past. This wedding ceremony is filled with joy and receives congratulations from many people.

As we witness such a wedding, we can see the spiritual and pure union of the Messiah and His bride, the Church. The bride, believing in Jesus Christ and being regenerated, includes both Jews and Gentiles. The bride, the Church, has received salvation through Jesus Christ's grace and must live a life of gratitude, dedication, and service.

Furthermore, once we become the Church, we must strive to live solely for the Lord after putting off the old self and putting on the new self. Thus, the pure bride, the Church, welcomes Jesus Christ as the groom, becoming one with Him, living with Christ, and living a life becoming more like the Lord through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The author reveals this spiritual relationship between Christ and the Church through the king's marriage as a symbolic representation.

3. The Eternal Nature of the King's Kingdom (16-17)

God's blessing for the marriage is proclaimed, and it is said that the king's descendants will be princes throughout the world, and through them, the king's name will be remembered and respected by all. The author emphasizes that the king's marriage is not just a union based on love between two people but an eternal union passed down through children.

What does the king's marriage in Psalm 45 mean for us today? It means that we enjoy the great grace of being accepted as the bride, despite our sinfulness leading to death, and being made God's children. Therefore, we must confess that we can only love and praise Jesus Christ, the King, with all our hearts, minds, and souls.

The Bible explains the redemptive relationship between God and humanity through marriage and further symbolically portrays the spiritual union between Christ and the Church. Getting married and building a family is not just a means for the preservation of humanity or social and moral happiness, but marriage itself is holy, sacred, and a source of blessing.

Spiritually, as brides, we need to reexamine where we stand spiritually and whom we look to and believe in as we move forward. As brides today, we need to examine how we serve and share love in the Church and the world, holding onto Jesus Christ, who is our entire life, acknowledging our weaknesses, boldly relying on the Lord, and praying for all the saints who walk with Him.
