Whose Son Is the Messiah?

35 While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, “Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David? 36 David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared:

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:

    “Sit at my right hand

until I put your enemies

    under your feet.”’

37 David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”

The large crowd listened to him with delight.

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law

38 As he taught, Jesus said, “Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

The Widow’s Offering

41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

Now Jesus, by presenting two extreme forms of religious practice, concludes his ministry in the temple. One is the misguided actions of the scribes cloaked in religion, while the other is the devoted act of an anonymous poor widow.

Mark declares the judgment of God upon these scribes, following their "faulty teaching" regarding the identity of Christ in verses 35-37, by pointing out their "faulty actions" in verses 38-40. Their judgment has already been implied through the parables.

Then, in contrast to the religious leaders, Jesus introduces the devoted act of a poor widow who gives all her livelihood, all she had, in the temple. This demonstrates the true significance of Jesus' impending sacrifice. Ultimately, her action serves as an example of Jesus' death as well as a model for discipleship.

In particular, the widow's act stands in stark contrast to the demeanor of the scribes depicted in verses 38-40. The demeanor of these scribes is associated with the corruption of the temple system. Consequently, the factors leading to the temple's destruction can be found in their demeanor. They are characterized by wearing long robes, receiving greetings in the marketplaces, desiring seats of honor in the synagogues and at banquets, and devouring widows' houses, all while making long prayers for show.

These scribes, who were supposed to be instruments for the practice of God's love and neighborly love alongside the proper worship in the temple, instead used temple worship and the law as tools to maintain and expand their privileges.

Thus, the portrayal of the poor widow, the last introduced during Jesus' ministry in the temple, is starkly contrasting to the demeanor of the religious leaders depicted in chapters 11-12. Those serving in the temple were preoccupied with using it to fulfill their own privileges, whereas this poor widow dedicated all her possessions, her entire livelihood, to the offering box for the relief of others.

In fact, the woman's act was merely an inconspicuous action to people's eyes. Her status, economic condition, and the amount of money she put into the offering box were not things of interest to people. Rather, they were actions that could be overlooked or disregarded. Yet Jesus, unlike the scribes and others, acted in a profoundly different manner. The Lord focused on the complete dedication of a poor widow, which was inconspicuous to people's eyes, as an example for His impending sacrifice.

As we contemplate the actions of this woman, we wonder if such a beautiful gesture could be found even in the den of thieves like this temple. Indeed, it is still the same today. Even in countries like Haiti, where there is a state of anarchy and one should flee for safety, there are missionaries who pray for them, accompany them, and extend a helping hand for them.

Similarly, in Europe, where Christianity is denied and dismissed as mere stories of the past, there are still a few Christians preaching the gospel, praying, and establishing churches in unseen places. Despite claims that Christianity has collapsed in Europe, the light of the Lord's gospel still shines there.

What we must remember is that even in the midst of worship in temples resembling dens of thieves, there are always pure and devoted individuals. In the days of the judges, in the time of Ahab, and even in the dark period of post-exilic times, there were always faithful people of God.

It is the same today. In times of darkness, rather than lamenting the darkness, we need people who become a beacon of light, illuminating the darkness. I believe that all saints of Hanarang Church, who bear such dedication and the flame of the gospel, can fulfill this mission.

Verses 43-44, as Jesus prepares to leave the temple, he calls his disciples and mentions the action of this poor widow, prompting them to consider its true meaning. Such an action was exceedingly rare. By reminding the disciples and us of the remarkable action of this seemingly worthless and insignificant poor widow, namely her complete dedication and sacrifice, Jesus sought to convey the significance of his impending sacrifice to them and to us.

Regarding the devoted sacrifice of this widow who cast all her life, livelihood, and livelihood directly into the offering box, scholar Light said, "Just as the widows' houses can be consumed by the corrupt temple system and the religious leaders as sacrifices, so too was Jesus ultimately a sacrifice of the temple's religious leaders in the panorama of history."

However, Jesus' death was not merely a simple sacrifice but an astonishing act of redemption, offering himself as a ransom for all people. At first glance, it may seem unreasonable for a poor widow in such a corrupt system to give everything she had, all her livelihood, even though it may have been voluntary. This perspective is similar to Peter's rebuke regarding the prophecy of Jesus' suffering.

However, the Bible declares that Jesus' death was an amazing plan of God for us, and Jesus voluntarily obeyed this plan and walked the path of sacrifice.

Jesus called his disciples to mention this woman's action to them to make it a special lesson for the disciples. Unlike the action of this woman, the disciples, in order not to become foolish sacrificial victims, found their way of life by betraying Jesus like Judas Iscariot or denying him like Peter or fleeing like the rest of the disciples.

However, living for Jesus and the gospel in an unjust world can easily make one a sacrificial victim. Nevertheless, those who follow the Lord should boldly walk the path of sacrifice for the gospel. Mark 8:35 says, "For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it." Amen.

The poor widow, even in an unjust system, offered all her livelihood, her entire life, to the offering box for the sake of others and the kingdom of the Lord. This was a markedly different action from the behavior of religious leaders at that time who even devoured widows' houses.

I, too, despite my financial difficulties and dependence on my livelihood, wondered if I could have the conviction that everything I have is what the Lord has given me and confidently put everything in like the widow. We all would find it not easy to make such a decision like this widow.

However, what's important is acknowledging that everything in our lives, whether it's finances, health, position, etc., is under God's plan and control. I believe that when we do so, we will be able to offer everything without hesitation at the moment when the Lord desires and hopes for it.

The portrayal of the widow in the passage can also be found in the figure of the anointing woman we will explore later. Although their offerings may differ greatly in outward value, they both represent acts of self-sacrifice.

Particularly in Mark's Gospel, we often encounter the portrayal of unnamed women. Whether it's the woman with the issue of blood, Simon's mother-in-law, the poor widow, or the anointing woman, they are introduced as beautiful examples of discipleship. Their faith and dedication cannot be anything but noble, despite their humble positions at that time. They vividly demonstrate the saying that "the last will be first" among disciples.

Beloved saints, regardless of whether our situation and environment are difficult and uncertain or even if we are walking smoothly, let us live each day overflowing with confession that says, 'All this is the Lord's doing!'
