20240205 [새벽묵상] 나의 우선 순위 | My Number One Priority (막/Mk 12:28~34)

The Greatest Commandment

28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

32 “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.

If your house were on fire, what would you take with you when evacuating? If your children couldn't walk yet, you would naturally carry them to safety. You would grab items like your wallet, computer, passport, personal documents, precious photos, money, valuables, letters from loved ones, etc. After gathering these items, you would watch from a distance as your entire house goes up in flames.

In that moment, you would realize the true meaning of your actions. If you were present at that time, you made a truly important choice. What you took with you is more valuable than all the possessions filling your home – the table, TV, computer, dishes, clothes, books, and more. It signifies where your priorities truly lie.

The discussion on the commandments starts with a scribe who, after hearing Jesus' wise response in a dispute with the Sadducees, approaches and asks about the foremost commandment. Jesus, quoting Deuteronomy 6:4-5 and Leviticus 19:18, highlights the love for God and love for neighbors as the most important commandments.

At that time, Jews categorized the law into great and small, light and heavy, totaling around 613 commandments. With so many commandments, which one is genuinely crucial? In times of crisis, which one would you hold onto? What is the significance of that choice? How should you view the remaining unchosen commandments? These are comprehensive questions posed by the scribe. Jesus responds by presenting love for God and love for neighbors as the supreme law.

This establishes a rule for determining what is most important in one's life. The Jewish law starts with worship, love for God. If we are made in God's image, then we must love and worship those around us better to find our true purpose and genuine selves. We must worship the one true God with our hearts, souls, minds, and strength in every aspect of our lives. If we live even a single day with this mindset, the kingdom of God will manifest on earth as it is in heaven.

However, Jesus doesn't stop there. Even though the scribe didn't inquire about the second commandment, Jesus mentions it. In verse 30, he says, "Love your neighbor as yourself." This doesn't mean loving others more than oneself but treating everyone with the same respect, care, and value as one does to oneself.

In Luke 10, this concept is applied more explicitly. If people live by these commandments, many problems in this world, both big and small, would likely be resolved without major conflicts. Jesus truly desires that those who follow him practice the commandments given by the Lord not only with their words but with their entire being and life.

Ask yourself, are you striving to put into practice the command to love your neighbor as yourself? It seems there are many instances in our lives where we fail to love our neighbors as ourselves. Nowadays, people often view their neighbors with suspicion. Will they harm me? Is this person strange? These anxious thoughts shape how we perceive our neighbors.

In a way, this reflects the issues of our society and environment today, but it also stems from people's selfishness. However, the command is not to view others with such eyes or to approach people with walls or biases. Perhaps this failure to practice the Lord's command and share Jesus' love is why we harbor such perspectives. Let us reflect on this and strive to be individuals who uphold the Lord's command and share the love of Jesus.

The answer of Jesus to the scribe's question holds another significant meaning. Jesus' first commandment is a variation of the Shema, an important prayer in Judaism. Shema means 'hear' or 'listen.' From Jesus' time to today, devout Jews recite this prayer regularly.

Upon hearing Jesus' response in verses 32-33, the scribe, deep in thought, seems to have discerned the intended meaning of Jesus, even though he didn't explicitly state it out loud. If this commandment is the most important, it implies that sacrifices and offerings given regularly – daily, weekly, yearly – as prescribed by the law, become unnecessary. Jesus is stating that in times of crisis, love for God and love for neighbors remain crucial, but sacrifices are not.

The scribe, having perceived the underlying meaning in Jesus' words, agrees with it. He understood that Jesus' actions in the temple were for this reason, making the temple obsolete due to the demands of Jewish law.

Naturally, Jesus commends the scribe for grasping this intention. In verse 34, Jesus says, "You are not far from the kingdom of God," and no one dares to ask any more questions.

Today's passage allows us to better understand how Jesus perceived his ministry. Jesus was aware that his mission challenged the temple-centric system and the law. His words were undoubtedly risky and controversial.

Jesus genuinely believed that through his mission, the people of Israel and everyone in the world would come to worship and love in a new way – with a new heart and a new way of life. This passage presents a significant challenge to all Christians living today.

If someone who doesn't believe observes our personal lives, our churches, and missionary organizations, can they recognize that we are genuinely trying to follow and practice Jesus – that we are truly followers of Jesus? It's not necessary to do things to show others, but we need to deeply consider whether we are truly expressing the heart of Jesus' love and neighborly love through our lips, hearts, and actions.

Moreover, if faced with unexpected difficulties and crises, what choices should we, and our communities, make? Do we choose wholehearted love for God and neighbors, or do we, for our own sake and the benefit of our community alone, cause pain to others and push them away? We need to reflect on this.

May all the you who live out the commandments of the Lord – loving with all their hearts, souls, and minds, and prioritizing themselves and their neighbors – check their priorities and genuinely express that love throughout the day.
