20240201 [새벽묵상] 나귀와 하나님의 영광 | Donkey and the Glory of God (막/Mk 11:1~10)

1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”

4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

“Hosanna!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

As you saw from yesterday’s QT devotional, blind Bartimaeus just received his sight from Jericho and a crowd of people followed Jesus. And in the Greek text of the bible, verse 1 from today’s scriptures start with the conjunction ‘and’. So Verse 1 can be read as “(And) As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives

So we can assume that Bartimaeus and the crowd of people followed Jesus up to this point.

They first went through Bethany and arrived at Bethphage.

The term Bethphage means "house of figs" or "field of fig trees."

Most scholars claim that Bethphage is a village or city but some people claim that this was an actual house. It might have been. We’ll never know. It’s really not that important.

We do know that Bethphage is one of the places closest to Jerusalem. It is located about a 10-minute walk east of the Mount of Olives, starting from the summit of the Mount of Olives towards the east, near Jerusalem.

Let’s read verse 2. saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here

The disciples who were sent to the nearby village are instructed to find a colt that has never been ridden, untie it, and bring it to Jesus. Why did Jesus choose to ride an unridden colt? It was not only a symbol of purity but also to fulfill the prophetic word of God. In Zechariah 9:9, it reads “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Jesus goes on to say in verses 2 and 3 to bring it here and if some people ask what they are doing, they should say, "The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly." In the original Greek text, the word 'palin' is omitted in the English translation. When this word is included in the verse, it reads, "He will send it back here immediately." So, after using the colt, Jesus will return it to its original owner immediately

From verses 4 to 6, we see how precisely the disciples experience the fulfillment of Jesus' words. They find the colt, untie it, and when questioned, they respond as instructed by Jesus. Not only do they witness Jesus' supernatural knowledge, but they also realize that their actions align exactly with what Jesus had foretold.

What's important here? The disciples are not speaking on their own; they are following Jesus' words, saying, "The Lord needs it." They are obedient to Jesus' instructions, and everything unfolds just as He said. "As He said" is emphasized, and the disciples experience the authority of Jesus' words coming to life. I hope that we also no matter what will be able to obey Jesus and the Word of God.

In verses 7-9: "They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks over it, and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, 'Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'"

If you think about this, it is so weird. A couple days ago, I was at a red light on a 4- way intersection. And suddenly police cars stopped the flow of traffic, and there were eight or nine limos passing by. They were probably politicians or someone famous. A king or someone famous should arrive somewhere in something fancy like limos. Jesus arriving at Jerusalem in a donkey is like a famous person arriving somewhere in the back of a pickup truck. Jesus arrived to Jerusalem not on something fancy but on a donkey.

Donkeys were not even meant to be ridden. Donkeys during that time were exclusively used for work. And they were uncomfortable to ride. Horses have a relatively flat back, but donkeys’ spines stick out where it is uncomfortable to ride. Traditionally, kings and victorious generals entered on a white horse called "equus." Given the context, it would have been more fitting for Jesus to enter on a white horse.

Nevertheless, Jesus chose to ride on a young donkey and the people of Jerusalem began to welcome Jesus with excitement, expecting him to perform the remarkable deeds they had witnessed in Galilee.

They yelled “Hosanna!” meaning please save us! It was a desperate cry for help like what a drowning person would yell if they were helpless and needed rescue. Just as David had conquered Jerusalem, they anticipated Jesus liberating them from the Romans and establishing a new reign in Jerusalem.

They didn’t understand their own prophetic teachings. They didn’t understand who the Messiah is.

Unfortunately, the same people who yelled Hosanna! would be yelling Crucify! in about a week.

What I want to focus on today is the donkey. Why was the donkey used to enter Jerusalem? In comparison to a white horse, donkeys look so plain and worthless. But this donkey was not worthless. Why? Because the donkey was chosen and used by God.

Isaiah 43:1 says, But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.”

Although we might be plain, although we might look worthless, we are not worthless? Why? Because God has chosen each and every one of us. And just like this scripture says, God have called us here by name. We have been called here as God’s children.

Therefore, let us respond to God's call with genuine worship, recognizing that He has chosen and called us. May we surrender to God's will, finding joy in wholehearted obedience and experiencing the protection that comes from walking in His path. Let us rejoice in the fact that God has chosen us and called us to serve Him faithfully. Let us be like the young donkey and be used for the glory of God!

I will end with a confession from one of my students in youth group. Every Saturday nights, our Youth Group have been having Praise and Worship School. This past Saturday was our 6th week. But I didn’t know if it was helping at all. I sometimes thought to myself and told God if I’m just wasting my time on Saturday nights when I could have been resting. For the first five weeks, we learned what worship and praise is by looking at different scriptures. Then I decided to switch it this week. We spent a lot of time praying and praising. And towards the end, I asked them a question: Describe your experience during worship this week. I told them to grade themselves. And this one specific student said ‘F’. I asked why. And this student said that they have only been focusing on looking good and sounding nice but on the inside, they weren’t really worshipping. And as this student confessed this, tears started to pour out. Once this student confessed, I thought to myself this is true worship, this is genuine worship and I was crying with her. If we want to dive into true worship, all we have to do is say yes and surrender to God. This is what the donkey did.

If God could use a donkey for his glory, how much do you think God can use us if we are willing. All we have to do is surrender to God. I pray that all the believers will admit that we are sinners, recognize and repent if we are not worshipping him, surrender to Him, and worship Him with everything that we have.
