Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight

46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”

So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.

The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.”

52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

The healing of the blind beggar Bartimaeus in Jericho is the final healing incident in the Gospel of Mark. Although not as grand and dramatic as raising Jairus' daughter, the results of this healing, restoring Bartimaeus' sight, can be considered the pinnacle of Mark's narrative, effectively illustrating the goal of Mark's Gospel.

As Jesus and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, the blind beggar Bartimaeus, sitting by the roadside, cried out, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" (Mark 10:46-47). Many people rebuked him and told him to be quiet.

At that time, people were ensnared by various prejudices. Those who held biases against women, children, the rich, and those in high positions now revealed their prejudice against a blind beggar. They considered the blind beggar to be a negligible and unworthy existence, deserving of being ignored and treated with disdain.

While others ignored and scorned the blind beggar, Jesus was the only one who showed him compassion. Jesus revealed his role as a merciful and gracious Messiah to those who believed in him before his triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

In verse 49, Jesus said, "Call him." Then in verse 51, he asked the blind man, "What do you want me to do for you?" Without hesitation, Bartimaeus replied, "Rabbi, I want to see." (Mark 10:51b).

In response, Jesus said in verse 52, "Go, your faith has healed you." Immediately, Bartimaeus regained his sight and followed Jesus on the road.

However, instead of simply saying, "Your wish to see will be granted," why did Jesus specifically say, "Your faith has healed you"? Jesus wanted to emphasize and highlight the faith of the blind beggar to his disciples and the surrounding crowd.

What is remarkable is that throughout the entire chapter 10, Jesus did not mention the faith of the religious leaders, the Pharisees, nor did he comment on the faith of the disciples who tried to hinder children, the young man with great possessions, and those desiring high positions from approaching him. However, he specifically mentioned the faith of the blind beggar. This was a striking and instructive statement for his disciples and the crowd. Today, he speaks to us in the same way, addressing our faith as he did with them.

What kind of faith did Jesus specifically mention in the case of the blind beggar? It was, first and foremost, the belief that Jesus, as the Messiah, could solve his painful and difficult problem.

When the blind beggar cried out, "Son of David, have mercy on me," it was not a request for a few coins. It was a fervent cry for the restoration of his sight, a deep plea. While it cannot be confirmed from the text whether the blind beggar knew that Jesus was the Messiah, he had a strong conviction that only Jesus could address and resolve his issue.

The faith of the blind beggar was a conviction that the solution to his problem could be found in the one who is compassionate and merciful. As children of the Lord, we enjoy many privileges. We can attend church, read the Bible, and pray. However, there are many times when we do not realize these privileges. In our daily prayers and words, how confidently do we believe in the Lord?

Humans tend to lose urgency when they feel comfortable, stable, and happy. Hence, difficulties arise in our lives. Through these trials, the Lord wants us to look to him and examine ourselves. In our prayers, we need to have a firm belief that he will surely address and resolve our situations and problems. We must introspect deeply. We need to reflect on whether we are praying with 100% trust and certainty when we say, "I believe you will do it."

We need a faith like that of the blind beggar, a faith with 100% certainty. I hope that such faith, trusting that the Lord will resolve my issues not in my time or through my thoughts but in His own time and way, will be deeply engraved in your hearts and mine. At that moment, I believe we will experience and enjoy the Lord's work more deeply and profoundly.

The faith of the blind beggar grew even stronger despite many people rebuking him and urging him to be quiet. His persistent and earnest cry, as seen in verse 48, "Have mercy on me," became even more resolute. Despite opposition, reproach, and hindrance, the blind beggar had a strong determination to meet the one who could solve his problems. Like the widow in Luke 18, he had a determined faith that he would meet the one who could resolve his issues.

Do we have such unwavering determination in our lives and faith, a determination filled with the certainty that only Jesus can solve our problems and alleviate our pains? Do we have a fervent heart that, even if there is opposition and discouragement, is determined to meet the one who can resolve our problems, just like the blind beggar?

As I reflect on the passage, I find myself examining whether I truly pray with the same fervency and determination as the blind beggar. I confess that I often fall short and see my inadequacies. Therefore, I find myself prostrating before the Lord once again.

Beloved saints, we must lay ourselves bare before the Lord, without reservation, and seek restoration. It is through this process that I believe we will fully enjoy the joy and restoration that come from walking with the Lord.

The faith of the blind beggar was also revealed in his clear and definite response, "Rabbi, I want to see," as he expressed his earnest wish. If you have met the one who can resolve your issues, but you hesitate or do not know what to say when asked, "What do you want me to do for you?" – what will happen?

When the one who can resolve your issues says, "What do you want me to do for you?" you should immediately express and speak out the desire that has already been clarified and prepared in your heart. Like the blind beggar, whose heart and life were dominated by the desire to see, we should have a strong determination that always wishes to see.

The faith of the blind beggar was a yearning tied to the desire for a solution through the Resolver. Jesus, in praising the blind beggar's faith and resolving his issues, affirmed this deep longing and faith.

Jesus aimed to break down the prevailing concepts and firmly establish the truth, educating people when distorted thoughts, namely sinful prejudices, overwhelm an era and a nation. Only through such a shocking process can a paradigm shift from prejudice to the paradigm of truth become possible. In other words, a paradigm shift requires this impactful process.

Through this shocking method, Jesus carved the truth of the kingdom into the hearts of the people. He revealed the truth of one body, that the kingdom belongs to those like children, the truth of removing obstacles of wealth and following the Lord, the truth that salvation is only through Jesus, and the truth that service is the way to exaltation.

Today, I pray that all the saints of Hansarang Church will engrave these truths deeply in their hearts, and that it will manifest in their actions as a way of life, living with a strong faith and determination towards the Lord.
