Jesus Walks on the Water

45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.

47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.

Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 51 Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.

53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.

Following the incident with the feeding of the five thousand, today's passage discusses the events where Jesus walked on water and healed the sick in Gennesaret.

1. Jesus' Actions (verses 45-46)

After the feeding of 5,000, Jesus performed three actions. Firstly, He sent His disciples to Bethsaida, secondly, He dismissed the crowd, and finally, He went up to the mountain alone. Jesus did not let the miracle of feeding linger. The word "immediately" in verse 45 is frequently used by Mark to describe Jesus' actions, emphasizing that the disciples should not be captivated by the miracle.

The crucial point is not the miracle itself but the presence of Jesus in the midst of it. The disciples were not to be obsessed with miracles; rather, they were to obey Jesus. Therefore, Jesus sent the disciples to Bethsaida, not letting them stay in the place of the miracle.

The crowd sought a militaristic Messiah. Understanding these expectations and desires, Jesus might have felt a temptation similar to what He experienced in the wilderness (Mark 1:13) – the temptation to expect power in this world.

How do you handle temptation when you sense it approaching? It could be targeting your weakest point or appealing to your favorite things. Do you hesitate and struggle when faced with temptation, or do you immediately leave and avoid that situation? Moreover, when there's a temptation where compromise seems possible, do you rely on your own willpower or believe in the power of prayer and go to the place of prayer?

In such situations, it's crucial not to engage in inner conflicts or compromises. Instead, you should seek God's intervention, leave that place, and ask for His guidance to dismiss those thoughts. Trust that, in doing so, you can break free from the chains of temptation and compromise.

Sometimes, a change of place allows for a change in thought. If you cannot leave a place, you may find it challenging to change your mindset. Therefore, Jesus urged His disciples to board a boat and go to Bethsaida.

Just as the crowd gathered after the feeding of the five thousand had no lingering impact from the miracle, Jesus immediately dispersed the crowd. In verse 46, it says, "After bidding them farewell." Those who had witnessed the miracle were prone to becoming a blindly devoted group. Miracles, such as the one they experienced, can act as an absolute guarantee for blind faith within a crowd.

The most attractive lure is to seize control of the crowd and make it one's own. However, Jesus did not use miracles as a means to control. Instead, He did not even provide the crowd with an opportunity for blind faith.

After the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus sent away both the disciples and the crowd to prevent them from becoming obsessed with the miracles. Following their departure, Jesus went alone to the mountain. Not only did Jesus lead the disciples and the crowd away from the place of the miracle, but He also left that place Himself. In other words, Jesus was no longer attached to that location.

Jesus changed the place. He chose the mountain as the new location. A mountain is not a gathering place for people. This signifies that Jesus chose a place where He did not need to showcase His abilities. His decision to go to the mountain was for the purpose of prayer.

Jesus left that place and chose prayer over the location of the miracle. He chose the place of prayer over the place of miracles. Rather than seeking the adoration of the crowd, Jesus opted for the solitude of the mountain for communion with God. Jesus did not cling to people but relied solely on God.

Even amidst a busy schedule and potential temptations, Jesus prioritized finding a quiet place for prayer to meet God. Through prayer, He built a relationship with God, preparing Himself to face various temptations.

How often do we pray and build a relationship with the Lord? Are we creating a space in our lives and dedicating time to nurture that relationship? We must ask ourselves these questions. I pray that, by distinguishing time and place and approaching the place of prayer, we may spiritually grow and become saints who resemble Christ.

Disciples' Tribulation (Mark 6:47-52)

The disciples encounter the tribulation of a storm in the midst of the sea. In this passage, a striking contrast is presented between the actions of Jesus and those of the disciples. The distinction between Jesus and the disciples begins with the difference in their locations, as stated in verse 47. The disciples are in the middle of the sea, while Jesus is on the land. However, this is just the beginning.

In verse 46, Jesus entrusts everything to God through prayer, but in verse 48, the disciples, troubled and struggling, try to solve the problem by rowing forcefully. Additionally, while Jesus watches over the disciples, they fail to look at Him. In verse 49, the disciples mistake Jesus for a ghost, yet in verse 50, Jesus identifies Himself. Finally, as the disciples see Jesus and are astonished, He reassures them not to be afraid in verse 50.

At this point, the disciples have no hope. They find themselves in a situation where progressing forward is difficult due to the natural attack, and going back is equally challenging. Despite continuous rowing, there is no apparent progress, and discouragement sets in as they face the strong wind. Gradually, the situation worsens.

Many of you may have experienced similar situations. The more you try to resolve a situation through your own abilities or by relying on others, the more it seems to deteriorate and become challenging. In such circumstances, what solution would you choose?

Jesus precisely intervenes to rescue the disciples in this situation. Seeing the disciples distressed in the midst of the sea, Jesus approaches them, speaks to them, and comes near to them by getting onto the boat. While the Sea of Galilee becomes a place of distress and despair for the disciples, it becomes a place of grace and salvation because of Jesus.

Jesus is willing to help us and extends His mercy. Therefore, even in situations where the way forward is unclear, you can experience the tremendous grace of the Lord. In moments of earnestness, you can regain peace. These remarkable experiences occur when, despite feeling submerged in deep waters, you believe in holding onto Jesus alone, trusting that He is the only one who can save you and deliver you from all difficulties.

Beloved saints, I believe that true hope in our lives lies solely in Jesus. Is your current life situation challenging? Do you feel uncertain about the future? Or are things going smoothly and steadily? In any circumstance, we must fix our gaze on Jesus and hold onto Him.

When we do so, even in the midst of life's challenges, we can taste the peace and grace that come from the Lord. I hope that today, with unwavering faith, all the saints of Hansarang Church will look solely to the Lord and experience His peace and grace in their lives.
