The Parable of the Mustard Seed
30 Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”
4:33 예수께서 이러한 많은 비유로 그들이 알아 들을 수 있는 대로 말씀을 가르치시되
4:34 비유가 아니면 말씀하지 아니하시고 다만 혼자 계실 때에 그 제자들에게 모든 것을 해석하시더라
33 With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. 34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.
4:35 그 날 저물 때에 제자들에게 이르시되 우리가 저편으로 건너가자 하시니
4:36 그들이 무리를 떠나 예수를 배에 계신 그대로 모시고 가매 다른 배들도 함께 하더니
4:37 큰 광풍이 일어나며 물결이 배에 부딪쳐 들어와 배에 가득하게 되었더라
4:38 예수께서는 고물에서 베개를 베고 주무시더니 제자들이 깨우며 이르되 선생님이여 우리가 죽게 된 것을 돌보지 아니하시나이까 하니
Jesus Calms the Storm
35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
4:39 예수께서 깨어 바람을 꾸짖으시며 바다더러 이르시되 잠잠하라 고요하라 하시니 바람이 그치고 아주 잔잔하여지더라
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
4:40 이에 제자들에게 이르시되 어찌하여 이렇게 무서워하느냐 너희가 어찌 믿음이 없느냐 하시니
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
4:41 그들이 심히 두려워하여 서로 말하되 그가 누구이기에 바람과 바다도 순종하는가 하였더라
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
하나님의 나라를 이해하는 두 가지 방법이 있습니다.
첫 번째는 예수님이 다시 오실 때입니다. 다니엘 7:13-14에서는 이렇게 기록 되어 있습니다.
내가 또 밤 환상 중에 보니 인자 같은 이가 하늘 구름을 타고 와서 옛적부터 항상 계신 이에게 나아가 그 앞으로 인도되매 그에게 권세와 영광과 나라를 주고 모든 백성과 나라들과 다른 언어를 말하는 모든 자들이 그를 섬기게 하였으니 그의 권세는 소멸되지 아니하는 영원한 권세요 그의 나라는 멸망하지 아니할 것이니라
다니엘은 하나님의 계획의 완성을 비전으로 보고 있습니다. 결국 예수님은 이 세상을 심판하기 위해 돌아오실 것입니다.
두 번째로 하나님의 나라는 우리 마음 속에서 일어납니다. 우리가 하나님의 말씀에 순종 할때, 우리는 하나님의 나라에 속하게 됩니다. 그러나 하나님의 권위를 거스르고 하나님에게 순종하지 않으면 우리는 하나님의 나라에 속하지 않게 됩니다.
There are two ways the Kingdom of God can be interpreted as. The first way is when Jesus returns. In Daniel 7:13-14 it says,
“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
Daniel is seeing in a vision the completion of God’s plan. Eventually Jesus will return to judge this world.
The second way of the Kingdom of God happens in our hearts. When we obey the Word of God and surrender everything to Him, we would be part of the Kingdom of God. However, if we defy God’s authority and refuse to surrender to Him, we would not be part of the Kingdom of God.
겨자씨의 비유
예수님은 오늘 말씀을 통해 하나님의 나라에 대해서 계속 이야기하고 계십니다. 예수님은 2절에서 하나님의 나라를 겨자씨에 비유합니다. 겨자씨를 본 적이 있으세요? 실제로 겨자씨를 보면, 아주 작습니다. 그 씨앗의 지름은 1~2밀리미터 정도입니다.
그러나 이 씨앗들이 실제로는 가장 작은 씨앗이 아니었다는 사실을 알고 계셨나요? 난초 (orchid) 씨앗이 훨씬 더 작다고 합니다. 그렇다면 예수님께서 왜 겨자씨를 비유로 사용했을까요? 어떤 사람들은 성경이 틀렸다고 주장합니다. 어떤 사람들은 마가가 잘못 기록했다고 말합니다. 그러나 이에 중점을 두기보다는 맥락에 집중해야 합니다. 예수님은 유대인과 이방인에게 말씀하고 게십니다. 예수님은 그 시대 농사 짖는 사람들에게 익숙한 가장 작은 씨앗을 언급했습니다.
대 플리니우스는 A.D. 23년에서 79년까지 살았던 로마의 저술가이자 철학자였습니다. 그의 책 "천연사"에서는 겨자씨가 심자 마자 즉시 싹튼다고 합니다. 그리, 뱀과 전갈의 쏘임을 완화하며 독성 있는 곰팡이를 중화시키고 후비루 증후군을 치료하며 치아 통증, 천식, 간질 등에 도움이 된다고 기록했습니다. 그리고 예수님의 말씀을 들었던 회중들은 이러한 정보를 잘 알아서 예수님께서 언급하셨을 것입니다.
Parable of the mustard seed
Jesus is continuing to speak about this Kingdom of God through today’s scriptures. Jesus compares the Kingdom of God in verse 2 to a mustard seed. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a mustard seed, but it is very small. The seeds are about one to two millimeters in diameter. But did you know that these seeds weren’t even the smallest seed. They say that orchid seeds are even smaller. So then why would Jesus use the mustard seed in His parable? Some say that the Bible is wrong. Some say that Mark recorded it wrong. But this is not what we should focus on. We should focus on the context. Who is he speaking to? He is speaking to Jews and Gentiles. Jesus mentioned the smallest seed that would be familiar to the farmer during that era.
Pliny the Elder was a Roman author, philosopher who lived from AD 23 to AD 79. In his book “The Natural History”, he says that the mustard seeds will germinate immediately upon being sown. He also says it relieves the sting of serpents and scorpions, neutralizes poisonous fungi, cures post-nasal drip, and helps with toothache, asthmas, epilepsy, etc.
Jesus’ audience most likely knew about mustard seeds which is why he included it in his parable.
And this mustard seed grows quickly into bushes nine feet tall. There are reports that some mustard seeds have grown to be 15-30 feet tall. So, the image that Jesus is wanting us to get is… something very small becoming very large, something that doesn’t seem significant actually having great significance.
또한, 이 겨자씨는 아홉 피트(약 2.7m) 높이의 덤불로 빠르게 자라난다고 말합니다. 어떤 보고에 따르면 어떤 겨자씨는 15에서 30피트에 이를 정도로 자라난 것으로 전해져 있습니다. 그러므로 예수님이 우리에게 전하고자 하는 것은 매우 작은 것이 매우 큰 것으로 변하는 것, 보이지 않는 것이 나중에 보면 커진 다는 것입니다.
하나님의 나라는 매우 작아 보일 수 있습니다. 대부분의 경우에는 눈에 띄지 않습니다. 그러나 하나님은 작은 것을 가져다가 위대하고 강력한 일에 사용합니다. 이것은 성경 전반에서 볼 수 있습니다. 예수님은 소년의 작은 도시락을 가져다 몇천명의 사람들을 먹였습니다. 하나님은 다윗을 통해 골리앗을 물리쳤습니다. 하나님은 홍수가 올 것을 예고하여 작은 가족을 통해 방주를 건설하도록 했습니다. 하나님은 출생한 마구간에서 시작된 어린 아기를 통해 세상을 구하셨습니다. 그러나 문제는 우리가 그렇게 작아 보일 때 믿음이 부족하다는 것입니다.
마태복음 17:14에는 한 사람이 자신의 귀신 들린 아들을 예수님께 데리고 왔습니다. 그가 예수의 제자들이 치료하지 못했다고 말했습니다. 그래서 예수님이 귀신을 책망하고 쫓아내셨습니다. 그러자 제자들이 귀신을 쫓지 못한 이유를 물었고 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “너희 믿음이 작은 까닭이니라 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 만일 너희에게 믿음이 겨자씨 한 알 만큼만 있어도 이 산을 명하여 여기서 저기로 옮겨지라 하면 옮겨 질 것이요 또 너희가 못할 것이 없으리라”
예수님은 우리에게 작은 믿음만 있으면 못 할게 없을 것이라고 말씀하십니다.
그리스도인으로서 이 작은 믿음을 위해서 꾸준히 기도해야 합니다. 그래서 우리가 하나님의 나라를 위해 산을 움직일 수 있기를 소망합니다.
The Kingdom of God can seem very small and insignificant. Most of the times, it is unnoticeable. However, God takes the small things and use them for great and mighty things. We see this throughout the Bible. Jesus took a boy’s small lunch and fed thousands of people. God used a young boy with a slingshot to defeat Goliath. God took a small family to build an ark for the coming flood. God used a little baby born in a stable to save the world. But the problem is the lack of faith when we seem to be that small.
In Matthew 17:14, a man brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus. He said that Jesus’ disciples couldn’t heal him. So Jesus rebuked the demon and drove him out. Then the disciples asked Jesus why they couldn’t drive the demon out. And Jesus said, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you”.
Jesus said, if you have even the smallest faith, nothing will be impossible for us. I hope that as believers, we will pray for even the smallest faith, so that we will be able to move mountains for the Kingdom of God.
예수님이 폭풍을 가라앉힌다
아이러니하게도 겨자씨의 비유 다음에는 예수님과 폭풍의 이야기가 나옵니다.
예수님은 배에서 설교를하고 계셨습니다. 당시에는 마이크가 없었으므로 다른 방법으로 목소리를 커다랗게 내야 했습니다. 그래서 예수님이 배에서 말씀하시면 바람이 목소리를 실어 다른 많은 사람들이 들을 수 있었습니다. 예수님은 35절에서 저편으로 건너가자 라고 말씀 하십니다. 이때 예수님의 인간적인 면을 볼 수 있습니다. 예수님은 하루 종일 설교를 하다가 피곤해서 배에서 잠들었습니다. 그러나 폭풍이 밀려오고 제자들은 파도와 바람을 보고 두려워 졌습니다.
제자들이 두려워할 이유가 있을까요? 그동안 제자들은 예수님이 질병을 치유하시고 귀신을 쫓아내시며 무리에게 가르치시고 종교 지도자들과 논쟁하시는 것을 보았습니다. 비록 예수님의 놀라운 능력이 있다는 것을 알았지만 제자들은 자연 현상에 대한 권한을 본 적은 없었습니다. 그럼에도 그들은 예수님을 깨우고 패닉의 상태에 들어가 있었습니다.
38절에서 그들은 예수님에게 이렇게 말했습니다. "선생님이여 우리가 죽게 된 것을 돌보지 아니하시나이까"
그리고 예수님이 일어나 39절에서 바람을 꾸짖으시며 "잠잠하라" 하시자 폭풍이 그치고 말았습니다.
제자들은 세상의 현실을 보고 예수님이 옆에 계신 데도 두려워 했습니다.
40절에서 예수님이 제자들에게 이르시되: 어찌하여 이렇게 무서워하느냐 너희가 어찌 믿음이 없느냐
Jesus calms the storm
Ironically, right after the parable of the mustard seed, we see this story of Jesus and the storm.
Jesus was preaching in a boat. Back then, Jesus didn’t have microphones, so he had to use other ways to amplify his voice. So if he is in a boat speaking, the wind would carry his voice so that a lot more people would be able to hear him. And while he was in the boat, he said in verse 35 to go over to the other side. At this point, we can see the human side of Jesus. Jesus was preaching all day so he got tired and fell asleep in the boat.
Then a storm comes. Disciples see the waves and the winds and they get scared.
Is it reasonable for the twelve to be afraid? To this point, the twelve have seen Jesus heal physical illness, cast out demons, teach mobs, and argue with religious leaders. As miraculous as His powers are, the twelve have yet to see anything that indicates He has authority over natural phenomenon. Still they wake Him, not necessarily expecting Him to rescue them, but to invite Him into their panic.
In verse 38, they said to Jesus, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
And Jesus gets up, and in verse 39, he rebuked the wind “Peace! Be still!” and the storm stopped.
The disciples saw the realities of the world and became scared although Jesus was also right there.
In verse 40 Jesus said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
이것이 하나님께서 오늘 우리에게 말씀하시는 것입니다.
“왜 이렇게 두려워하느냐? 아직도 믿음이 없느냐? 내가 이 모든 기적을 행했음에도 너는 여전히 믿지 않느냐” 라고 말씀하십니다.
우리의 삶은 항상 세상과의 전투입니다. 우리는 수련회, 부흥회, 심지어 주일날 예배의 자리에 가면 모든 것이 완벽한 것 같습니다. 우리는 엄청 거룩하게 되어 " 주님, 제가 모든 것을 드립니다!" 라고 선포합니다.
그리고 평일에 현실을 보게 되면 달라 집니다. 두려워 집니다. 그래서 우리는 어떻게 기독교인으로서 세상과 싸워야 할까요?
유다서 20-21절에는 이렇게 말하고 있습니다.
사랑하는 자들아 너희는 너희의 지극히 거룩한 믿음 위에 자신을 세우며 성령으로 기도하며 하나님의 사랑 안에서 자신을 지키며 영생에 이르도록 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 긍휼을 기다리라
비록 세상이 무섭게 보일지라도 우리는 항상 성령 안에서 기도하고 하나님의 사랑에 들어가야 합니다. 그래서 우리가 매일 기도하고 찬양할 때마다, 하나님이 찾아오시고 우리를 위로 할 것이며 결국에는 하나님이 우리를 회복하실 것입니다.
This is what God is telling us today.
Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?
I’ve done all these miracles and yet you still do not believe.
It’s constantly a battle with the world. We go to places like retreats, revivals, even Sunday worship, and everything would be perfect. We would be holy and proclaim, “God you are my everything! I surrender my life to you!
And during the weekday when we see reality, it would be different. We would get scared. So how should we fight the world as Christians?
Jude 20-21 says
20 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.
Although the world might be scary, we need to always pray in the Holy Spirit and immerse ourselves in the love of God. So when we continue to pray every day, worship every day, God will come find us, God will comfort us, and in the end, God will restore us.
