20231201 [새벽묵상] 영광의 복음의 능력 | The Power of the Glorious Gospel (골/Col 1:1-8)

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

2 To God’s holy people in Colossae, the faithful brothers and sisters in Christ:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father.

3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you,

4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people—

5 the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel

6 that has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace.

7 You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf,

8 and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.

In the 1970s , Christina leaders in South Korea were desperate for a revival. So Billy Graham was invited to hold a revival in South Korea. Around that time, the Korean population was about 30 million people so they had a slogan of “Let’s win 30 million Koreans for Christ”. They say that this was the biggest revival of Billy Graham’s career. A total of 3.2 million people attended the five-day revival in the year of 1973 as Dr. Billy Kim (Jang Hwan Kim) interpreted for Billy Graham. Remember that during this time in South Korea, it was a predominantly Buddhist country. But on the last day, in front of 1.1 million people, after spreading a message about the Gospel for the five days, Billy Graham challenged them to give up all of their idols. Billy Graham challenged them to stand up if you were willing to give up their idols and receive Jesus Christ. It was quiet at first but one by one people started to stand. And over the course of the 5 day revival, about 75,000 decided to receive Christ. Why? Because the Gospel is power. The Holy Spirit was amongst them for those five days. Mega churches didn’t even exist back then. But now there are so many churches, seminaries that have started due to this revival in 1973. Because of this amazing power of the Gospel. Because the Gospel changes everything.

As we go into the book of Colossians, it highlights the importance of the Gospel. Let us read verse 3-6.

Paul is thanking God for their faith and love which came in response to the Gospel. And then in verse 6, Paul boasts that the Gospel not only came to them but it was bearing fruit all around the world. This is the Gospel. The Gospel has the power to bear fruit all around the world. The Gospel has the power to transform the worst sinner into a man or woman of God. The question is this: Is the Gospel this powerful in our lives? Often Christians lose joy in the Gospel. It just becomes something that we must believe in and something that we need to have to be saved.

When Paul wrote this epistle, the Colossian Church forgot about the importance of the Gospel. They were being tricked by the Gnostic cults that were entering the church. These cults were teaching them that Jesus Christ alone was not enough for them to be saved. They were teaching them that the Gospel was not enough.

However, Jesus Christ is enough. The Gospel is enough for us to be saved.

So why is the Gospel so important for our faith? Why is the Gospel so glorious?

Let us read verses 4-5 again.

because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people— 5 the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel

First, because salvation is received by faith

. Every other religion teaches the good works that they must do in order to be saved. However, they aren’t even assured of salvation even by doing all those good deeds. The Gospel teaches us that salvation is given to us through our faith. There are many definitions of faith but one of the more important aspects of faith is committing to Jesus Christ. It means placing Jesus Christ as our first on our priority list.  Luke 14:23 says, If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.” When I was a young adult, I took this verse literally, told my parents, and almost died. It doesn’t mean to just suddenly hate everything in your life but it means to value God and Jesus above everything else.

Second, because the Gospel results in love

Proof of the amazing power of the Gospel is whether you love others. When a person truly becomes a born again Christian, the holy spirit will be pouring the love of God into his heart. And that love allows them to love not only God but people as well.

Third, because the Gospel brings hope

Why is hope important? Because hope encourages us and motivates us. It helps us persevere. A person who hopes to become a doctor studies hard. A person who hopes to be healthy eats well and exercises regularly at the gym. We are all motivated by this idea of hope.

Paul says in verse 5, “the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven” The hope stored up for us in heaven is what motivates us to put our faith in Jesus Christ. We must always embrace this idea of hope. However, the enemy works hard to remove that hope in us. If a Christian loses hope, like I said yesterday, we will begin to compromise with the world. We will compromise for temporary pleasure. Think about Moses’ story.

“24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. 25 He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.”

(Hebrews 11:24-26)

Moses could have had a very easy and comfortable life. However, he gave up that wealth and chose to be mistreated with the people of God. Why? Because he looked ahead to the reward that was stored up in heaven. And what are we hoping for? Eternal life.

Fourth, because the Gospel is truth.

In today’s era, many people claim to the truth. Some say that there is no God. Some say that Allah is God. Some say that Buddha is God. However, there can only be one truth. They can’t all be true although some people claim that there are many ways to get to heaven. The only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ. Amen! While all the founders of the various religions of the world have died and been buried, Christ is very much alive! Although Jesus died on the cross, he resurrected after three days, and ascended into heaven.

Jesus is indeed alive! Jesus continues to work within us. So today let us remind ourselves of the amazing power of the Gospel. The Gospel has the power to change you, to give you faith, to allow ourselves to love others, to bring us hope, and to know the truth.

Just as the Gospel and the Holy Spirit were active within South Korea in 1973, let us experience that kind of power that the Gospel brings. Because the Gospel changes everything.
