18:1 무리에게서 스스로 갈라지는 자는 자기 소욕을 따르는 자라 온갖 참 지혜를 배척하느니 라
1 An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends
and against all sound judgment starts quarrels.
18:2 미련한 자는 명철을 기뻐하지 아니하고 자기의 의사를 드러내기만 기뻐하느니라
2 Fools find no pleasure in understanding
but delight in airing their own opinions.
18:3 악한 자가 이를 때에는 멸시도 따라오고 부끄러운 것이 이를 때에는 능욕도 함께 오느니라
3 When wickedness comes, so does contempt,
and with shame comes reproach.
18:4 명철한 사람의 입의 말은 깊은 물과 같고 지혜의 샘은 솟구쳐 흐르는 내와 같으니라
4 The words of the mouth are deep waters,
but the fountain of wisdom is a rushing stream.
18:5 악인을 두둔하는 것과 재판할 때에 의인을 억울하게 하는 것이 선하지 아니하니라
5 It is not good to be partial to the wicked
and so deprive the innocent of justice.
18:6 미련한 자의 입술은 다툼을 일으키고 그의 입은 매를 자청하느니라
6 The lips of fools bring them strife,
and their mouths invite a beating.
18:7 미련한 자의 입은 그의 멸망이 되고 그의 입술은 그의 영혼의 그물이 되느니라
7 The mouths of fools are their undoing,
and their lips are a snare to their very lives.
18:8 남의 말하기를 좋아하는 자의 말은 별식과 같아서 뱃속 깊은 데로 내려가느니라
8 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels;
they go down to the inmost parts.
18:9 자기의 일을 게을리하는 자는 패가하는 자의 형제니라
9 One who is slack in his work
is brother to one who destroys.
18:10 여호와의 이름은 견고한 망대라 의인은 그리로 달려가서 안전함을 얻느니라
10 The name of the Lord is a fortified tower;
the righteous run to it and are safe.
18:11 부자의 재물은 그의 견고한 성이라 그가 높은 성벽 같이 여기느니라
11 The wealth of the rich is their fortified city;
they imagine it a wall too high to scale.
18:12 사람의 마음의 교만은 멸망의 선봉이요 겸손은 존귀의 앞잡이니라
12 Before a downfall the heart is haughty,
but humility comes before honor.
18:13 사연을 듣기 전에 대답하는 자는 미련하여 욕을 당하느니라
13 To answer before listening—
that is folly and shame.
18:14 사람의 심령은 그의 병을 능히 이기려니와 심령이 상하면 그것을 누가 일으키겠느냐
14 The human spirit can endure in sickness,
but a crushed spirit who can bear?
18:15 명철한 자의 마음은 지식을 얻고 지혜로운 자의 귀는 지식을 구하느니라
15 The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge,
for the ears of the wise seek it out.
18:16 사람의 선물은 그의 길을 넓게 하며 또 존귀한 자 앞으로 그를 인도하느니라
16 A gift opens the way
and ushers the giver into the presence of the great.
18:17 송사에서는 먼저 온 사람의 말이 바른 것 같으나 그의 상대자가 와서 밝히느니라
17 In a lawsuit the first to speak seems right,
until someone comes forward and cross-examines.
18:18 제비 뽑는 것은 다툼을 그치게 하여 강한 자 사이에 해결하게 하느니라
18 Casting the lot settles disputes
and keeps strong opponents apart.
18:19 노엽게 한 형제와 화목하기가 견고한 성을 취하기보다 어려운즉 이러한 다툼은 산성 문빗장 같으니라
19 A brother wronged is more unyielding than a fortified city;
disputes are like the barred gates of a citadel.
18:20 사람은 입에서 나오는 열매로 말미암아 배부르게 되나니 곧 그의 입술에서 나온 것으로 말미암아 만족하게 되느니라
20 From the fruit of their mouth a person’s stomach is filled;
with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied.
18:21 죽고 사는 것이 혀의 힘에 달렸나니 혀를 쓰기 좋아하는 자는 혀의 열매를 먹으리라
21 The tongue has the power of life and death,
and those who love it will eat its fruit.
18:22 아내를 얻는 자는 복을 얻고 여호와께 은총을 받는 자니라
22 He who finds a wife finds what is good
and receives favor from the Lord.
18:23 가난한 자는 간절한 말로 구하여도 부자는 엄한 말로 대답하느니라
23 The poor plead for mercy,
but the rich answer harshly.
18:24 많은 친구를 얻는 자는 해를 당하게 되거니와 어떤 친구는 형제보다 친밀하니라
24 One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
잠언 18장을 통해 우리는 어떻게 하면 의인이 되고 어리석은 자가 되지 않는지에 대해 계속 배우고 있습니다.
Through Proverbs 18, we continue to learn what it means to be a righteous person and not a fool.
겸손과 하나님을 추구하기
1절에서 솔로몬이 기록한 첫 번째 포인트를 볼 수 있습니다. "무리에게서 스스로 갈라지는 자는 자기 소욕을 따르는 자라 온갖 참 지혜를 배척하느니라." ESV 버전에서는 "자기 자신을 갈라지는 자는 자기 욕망을 찾아내고 모든 명철에 반하여 분출한다"라고 합니다. 여기서 갈라지는 것은 실제로 자기 자신을 어디 다른 곳으로 보내는게 아니라 정신적으로 갈라진다는 것을 의미합니다. 사람이 갈라지고 싶다는 것은 그 사람은 다른 사람들보다 높다/잘 나간다 생각하는 것입니다. 그들은 겸손함이 조금도 없습니다. 그냥 거만한겁니다.
2절은 "미련한 자는 명철을 기뻐하지 아니하고 자기의 의사를 드러내기만 기뻐하느니라"라고 말합니다. 그들은 다른 사람의 의견을 듣고 싶어하지 않습니다. 그들은 항상 자신의 아이디어가 더 나은 것으로 생각하기 때문에 항상 자기 자신을 높이 올릴것입니다.
Pursuing Humility and God
In Verse 1, we see the first point that Solomon listed. “An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends and against all sound judgment starts quarrels.” (NIV). In the ESV version, it says: “Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.” When it says isolating himself, it is not talking about physically isolating themselves but mentally isolating themselves. By a person isolating, it means that this person is thinking that he or she is superior to others. They are arrogant without an ounce of humility.
Verse 2 says, “Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their opinions”
They don’t want to hear others. They will always isolate themselves because they always think their ideas are better.
크리스천으로서 우리는 세상과 달라야 한다고 했습니다.. 하나님은 우리가 이 세상의 소금과 빛이라고 말했습니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리에게 안믿는 사람들과 멀리 떠러져 있으라고 하지 않았어요.. 하나님은 우리에게 안믿는 자들과 모든 인연을 끊으라고 말하지 않았습니다. 예수님은 자기 자신을 고립시키지 않았습니다. 그는 세리와 같은 죄인들과 식사를 나누었습니다. 오늘날의 교회들이 가지고 있는 문제 중 하나가 때로는 우리가 스스로를 고립시키려는 경향이 있다는 것입니다. 그러나 예수님은 마태복음 28:19-20에서 세상으로 가서 복음을 전하라고 말했습니다. 이것은 열방뿐만 아니라 우리 주위의 도시, 믿지 않는 친구와 가족들에게도 적용됩니다.
그러므로 어리석은 자들은 오직 자기 자신에 대해서만 생각합니다. 그들은 자기 자신을 고립시킵니다. 그들은 자기 중심적입니다. 그러나 우리는 누구에게 초점을 맞춰야 할까요? 우리는 하나님에게 초점을 맞춰야 합니다. 우리는 우선 순위 목록을 고려하고 하나님을 목록에서 1위로 올려놓아야 합니다. 한 공동체로서 우리가 하나님에게 초점을 맞추기를 소망합니다.
As Christians, it is correct that we need to be different. God told us that we are the salt and light of this world. However, God never told us to isolate ourselves. God never told us to eliminate all contact with nonbelievers. Jesus did not isolate himself. He would have dinner with the sinners like tax collectors. I think this is one problem of today’s churches. We sometimes tend to isolate ourselves. But Jesus said in Matthew 28:19-20 to go into the world and proclaim the Gospel. This doesn’t just refer to the nations, but it also refers to the cities around us. It refers to the friends and family around us who don’t believe.
So fools only think about themselves. They isolate themselves. They are self-centered. However, who should we focus on? Should we only focus on ourselves? We should focus on God. We need to think about our priority list and move God to our number 1 on our list. I hope that as a church, we will be able to put our focus on God.
신령한 지혜를 추구하기
4절은 "명철한 사람의 입의 말은 깊은 물과 같고 지혜의 샘은 솟구쳐 흐르는 내와 같으니라"라고 말합니다.
일반적으로 우리가 누군가와 깊은 대화를 나눈다고 할 때, 그들은 자신의 진정한 감정과 개인적인 정보를 나누고 있습니다. 그러나 이 맥락에서는 다릅니다. 물이 깊으면 바닥을 볼 수 있을까요? 아마도 그렇지 않을 것입니다. 우리는 물의 윗 부분만 볼 수 있을 것입니다.
사람들은 자신에 대해 이야기할 때, 윗 부분만 알려주고 일부를 숨길 수 있습니다. 요한복음 2:24-25에서 이렇게 기록 되어있습니다.
"예수는 그의 몸을 그들에게 의탁하지 아니하셨으니 이는 친히 모든 사람을 아심이요 또 사람에 대하여 누구의 증언도 받으실 필요가 없었으니 이는 그가 친히 사람의 속에 있는 것을 아셨음이니라”.
예수님은 사람들이 마음 깊은 곳에서 어떻게 생각할지 알고 계셨습니다. 성경은 사람들이 자신을 잘 알지 못한다고 가르칩니다. 유명한 그리스어 quote 가 있죠. "스스로를 알라" 그러나 우리는 우리의 인간적 본성 때문에 스스로를 알 수 없습니다.
반면에 참 지혜되시는 하나님은 넘치고 맑은 시냇물과 같습니다. 이것이 우리가 하나님의 말씀을 알고 있는 데에 그렇게 중점을 두는 이유입니다.
Striving for Godly Wisdom
Verse 4 says, “The words of the mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a rushing stream.”
Usually when we talk about someone having a deep conversation, they are revealing some of their true feelings and personal information. But in this context, it is different. If the water is deep, are we able to see the bottom? Probably not. We are only able to see the upper part of the water. We won’t be able to see the full picture. When a person is talking about themselves, they may hide some parts about them. In John 2:24-25, it says “But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.” Jesus knew what people would think about deep within.
The Bible teaches that people do not even know themselves well.
There’s a famous Greek quote: “Know Yourself”. However, we can’t know ourselves because of our human nature.
However, Godly wisdom is like a rushing stream. It is super clean and clear. And this is why we put so much of a focus in knowing the Word of God.
주 안에서의 안전과 기쁨
10절은 "여호와의 이름은 견고한 망대라 의인은 그리로 달려가서 안전함을 얻느니라" 라고 말합니다. 솔로몬은 세속적인 어리석음 대신 주 안에서 안전을 찾도록 우리에게 권장하고 있습니다. 믿는 자로서 우리에게 어려운 시간, 시련, 시험이 찾아올 때, 우리는 주의 자비, 은혜, 사랑, 신실함, 용서에 피난처를 찾을 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 결국에는 우리 하나님은 우리의 아버지이십니다. 그러나 우리는 종종 다른 것을 통해 안전을 찾으려고 노력합니다. 돈을 통해 안전을 찾으려고 하고, 가족을 통해 안전을 찾으려고 하며, 좋은 직장을 통해 안전을 찾으려고 합니다. 그러나 진정한 기쁨과 안전은 우리 주님의 이름 안에서 찾을 수 있는 줄 믿습니다. 아멘.
Security/Joy in Our Lord
Verse 10 says, “The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”
Solomon is encouraging believers to find security in the Lord instead of worldly foolishness.
When hard times, trials, temptations come to us as believers, we can take refuge in the Lord’s mercy, grace, love, faithfulness, and forgiveness. Because in the end our God is our Father. However, many times, we try to find security through other things. We try to find security through money. We try to find security through family. We try to find security through a good job. But true joy and security can only be found through in the name of our Lord. Amen.
오늘 성경 구절의 마지막 부분에서는 "많은 친구를 얻는 자는 해를 당하게 되거니와 어떤 친구는 형제보다 친밀하니라"라고 말합니다.
우리는 "친구"라는 단어를 돈, 세상, 명애과 교체할 수 있습니다. 만약 그러한 세속적인 것들을 추구하면 우리는 해를 당할것입니다. 그러나 형제보다 가까운 친구가 있습니다. 그 친구는 바로 예수 그리스도입니다.
저는 하나의 공동체로서 겸손과 지혜를 추구할 수 있기를 바라며, 이러한 것들이 결국에는 우리 삶에서 참된 기쁨과 참된 안전을 줄 것이라 소망합니다.
In the last verse of today’s scriptures it says, “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”
We can replace the word “friends” with money, the world, fame. If you pursue those worldly things, you will be ruined. However, there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. That friend is Jesus Christ.
I hope that as one community, we will be able to pursue humility and wisdom. And these things will eventually give us true joy and true security in our lives.
