14:17 노하기를 속히 하는 자는 어리석은 일을 행하고 악한 계교를 꾀하는 자는 미움을 받느니라

17 A quick-tempered person does foolish things,

and the one who devises evil schemes is hated.

14:18 어리석은 자는 어리석음으로 기업을 삼아도 슬기로운 자는 지식으로 면류관을 삼느니라

18 The simple inherit folly,

but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.

14:19 악인은 선인 앞에 엎드리고 불의한 자는 의인의 문에 엎드리느니라

19 Evildoers will bow down in the presence of the good,

and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.

14:20 가난한 자는 이웃에게도 미움을 받게 되나 부요한 자는 친구가 많으니라

20 The poor are shunned even by their neighbors,

but the rich have many friends.

14:21 이웃을 업신여기는 자는 죄를 범하는 자요 빈곤한 자를 불쌍히 여기는 자는 복이 있는 자니라

21 It is a sin to despise one’s neighbor,

but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy.

14:22 악을 도모하는 자는 잘못 가는 것이 아니냐 선을 도모하는 자에게는 인자와 진리가 있으리라

22 Do not those who plot evil go astray?

But those who plan what is good find love and faithfulness.

14:23 모든 수고에는 이익이 있어도 입술의 말은 궁핍을 이룰 뿐이니라

23 All hard work brings a profit,

but mere talk leads only to poverty.

14:24 지혜로운 자의 재물은 그의 면류관이요 미련한 자의 소유는 다만 미련한 것이니라

24 The wealth of the wise is their crown,

but the folly of fools yields folly.

14:25 진실한 증인은 사람의 생명을 구원하여도 거짓말을 뱉는 사람은 속이느니라

25 A truthful witness saves lives,

but a false witness is deceitful.

14:26 여호와를 경외하는 자에게는 견고한 의뢰가 있나니 그 자녀들에게 피난처가 있으리라

26 Whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress,

and for their children it will be a refuge.

14:27 여호와를 경외하는 것은 생명의 샘이니 사망의 그물에서 벗어나게 하느니라

27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,

turning a person from the snares of death.

14:28 백성이 많은 것은 왕의 영광이요 백성이 적은 것은 주권자의 패망이니라

28 A large population is a king’s glory,

but without subjects a prince is ruined.

14:29 노하기를 더디 하는 자는 크게 명철하여도 마음이 조급한 자는 어리석음을 나타내느니라

29 Whoever is patient has great understanding,

but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.

14:30 평온한 마음은 육신의 생명이나 시기는 뼈를 썩게 하느니라

30 A heart at peace gives life to the body,

but envy rots the bones.

14:31 가난한 사람을 학대하는 자는 그를 지으신 이를 멸시하는 자요 궁핍한 사람을 불쌍히 여기는 자는 주를 공경하는 자니라

31 Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker,

but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

14:32 악인은 그의 환난에 엎드러져도 의인은 그의 죽음에도 소망이 있느니라

32 When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down,

but even in death the righteous seek refuge in God.

14:33 지혜는 명철한 자의 마음에 머물거니와 미련한 자의 속에 있는 것은 나타나느니라

33 Wisdom reposes in the heart of the discerning

and even among fools she lets herself be known.

14:34 공의는 나라를 영화롭게 하고 죄는 백성을 욕되게 하느니라

34 Righteousness exalts a nation,

but sin condemns any people.

14:35 슬기롭게 행하는 신하는 왕에게 은총을 입고 욕을 끼치는 신하는 그의 진노를 당하느니라

35 A king delights in a wise servant,

but a shameful servant arouses his fury.

We just went through the first part of Proverbs Chapter 14 yesterday and discussed the fear of the Lord. Proverbs chapters 14 and 15 is about the fear of the Lord so today’s message will be an extension of yesterday’s message.

So yesterday, we were comparing a person who fears the Lord and someone who does not (In other words, someone who is wise to someone who is a fool).

어제 우리는 잠언 14장의 첫 부분을 보며 여호와를 경외하는 것에 대해 나눴습니다. 잠언 14장과 15장은 여호와를 경외하는 것에 관한 것이라서 오늘의 메시지는 어제 메시지의 연장선입니다.

어제 우리는 여호와를 경외하는 사람과 그렇지 않은 사람(다시 말해 지혜로운 사람과 어리석은 사람)을 비교했습니다.

Slow to become angry and slow to speak

In Verse 17, it says the quick-tempered person will do foolish things. And in verse 29, it says the quick-tempered person displays folly. In other words, they will do dumb things when they are angry.

There’s this green character that I would like to introduce you to. He is the Incredible Hulk. There is an actual scientist who studied this fictional character. From the movies, he got zapped by gamma radiation and his DNA changed becoming the hulk. And the scientist used some science lingo like chromothripsis. I watched this one video like five times but I didn’t really understand it. But if you’re interested, you can search why is the hulk green, and you will be able to see why. But anyways, the Hulk is triggered by anger. Usually, he is this mild mannered scientist but when he becomes angry, he will turn into the Hulk. So, his shirt will rip, but there is one part of clothes that never rip and it is his pants. The interesting thing is that when he turns back to becoming a scientist, he will only remember flashes of the things that he did as a hulk.

화를 천천히 내고 말을 천천히 하는 것

17절에는 노하기를 속히 하는 자는 어리석은 일을 행한다고 말합니다. 그리고 29절에는 마음이 조급한 자는 어리석음을 나타내느니라. 즉, 지혜가 없는 자들은 화가 날 때 어리석은 짓을 할 것입니다.

여러분께 소개하고 싶은 초록색 캐릭터가 있습니다. 그는 놀라운 헐크 (incredible hulk)입니다. 실제로 이 캐릭터를 연구한 과학자들이 있습니다. 어떻게 헐크는 변하고 왜 초록색인지 연구한 사람들입니다. 영화에서 그는 감마 방사선(gammar rays)에 피폭되어 DNA가 변하여 헐크가 되었습니다. 그리고 과학자는 chromothripsis같은 과학 용어를 사용했습니다. 저는 이 영상을 다섯 번이나 봤지만 이해가 잘 안됩니다. 관심이 있다면 왜 헐크가 초록색인지 검색해보면 알 수 있을 겁니다. 어쨌든, 헐크는 분노로 인해 활성화됩니다. 보통 그는 온화한 과학자지만 화가 나면 헐크로 변합니다. 그래서 그의 셔츠는 찢어지겠지만, 결코 찢어지지 않는 옷 한 부분이 있는데 그것은 바로 그의 바지입니다. 흥미로운 것은 그가 과학자로 다시 돌아올 때, 그는 헐크로서 했던 일들의 일부만 기억한다는 것입니다.

It is the same way for us, just like verse 17 says, we will do dumb things when we are triggered by anger. In James 1:19-20, it says, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.” What does this mean? Those who are Christians, those who trust and obey God learn to adjust the speed of their listening and speaking. If God is truly in control, we can afford to take the time to understand. Doubting that God is in control speeds up our mouth and slows down our mind. As believers, we shouldn't be obsessed with ensuring that we are heard and understood to get what we want. When we act according to our immediate desires, and our immediate reactions, we feel a lack of control. And when we feel like we're losing control, we will get angry.

우리에게도 마찬가지입니다, 17절에서 말한 것처럼, 우리는 화가 나면 어리석은 일을 행합니다. 야고보서 1장 19-20절에는 이렇게 말합니다. "내 사랑하는 형제들아 너희가 알지니 사람마다 듣기는 속히 하고 말하기는 더디 하며 성내기도 더디 하라. 사람이 성내는 것이 하나님의 의를 이루지 못함이라." 이것이 무슨 의미일까요? 그리스도인들은, 즉 하나님을 신뢰하고 순종하는 사람들은 듣고 말 하는것을 조절하는 법을 배워야합니다. 하나님은 진짜 계시지 않습니까? 그러면 우리는 여유가 있어야 합니다. 하나님이 계신다는 것을 의심하면 그때부터느 우리의 마음은 좀 급해지죠. 믿는 자로서 우리는 우리가 원하는 것을 듣고 이해 받기 위해 집착할 필요가 없습니다. 우리가 자신의 욕망에 따라 행동할 때, 우리는 통제력이 부족하다고 느낄 수 있습니다. 그리고 우리가 통제력을 잃어가고 있다고 느낄 때, 우리는 화를 내게 됩니다.

Getting angry may be a great tool for getting our own way. The world tells us that anger can manipulate or intimidate those around us. Anger gives us the feeling that we are in control of the people in our lives, even making ourselves feel better for a few moments. But even from a non-spiritual perspective, this comes at a high price. We lose our integrity, the trust of others, and our self-control when we live by anger. James' teaching here reveals a huge idea and is in line with today’s scripture as well: we were created for far more than simply getting the superficial things out of life. Part of our purpose as believers is to be used by God to help contribute to His righteousness, to help accomplish His purpose in the world. We have a glorious, eternal purpose, far greater than what we can achieve through anger or sin.

화를 내는 것은 우리가 원하는 것을 얻기 위한 좋은 도구라고 생각 할 수도 있습니다. 세상은 우리에게 화를 내면 주변 사람들을 조작할 수 있다고 말합니다. 화는 우리에게 우리가 우리의 삶 속 사람들을 통제하고 있다는 느낌을 주며, 심지어 아주 잠시 동안 우리 자신을 더 나아 보이게 할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 세상적인 관점에서 보더라도 이것은 아주 않좋은 것이죠. 우리는 화를 통해 살아갈 때 우리의 진실성, 다른 이들의 신뢰, 그리고 자제력을 잃습니다. 여기서 야고보의 가르침은 오늘의 성경과도 일치합니다: 우리는 단순히 인생에서 돈이나 세상적인 것들을 얻기 위해 창조된 것이 아닙니다. 우리의 목적 중 일부는 하나님의 의에 기여하고, 세상에서 하나님의 목적을 이루는 데 도움을 주기 위해 하나님에 의해 사용되는 것입니다. 우리는 분노나 죄를 통해 달성할 수 있는 것보다 훨씬 더 위대한 영광스럽고 영원한 목적을 가지고 있습니다.

Eternal life

Why are we believers? Why should we become slow to speak, slow to anger? Why should we stay away from wickedness?

In verse 32, “When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down, but even in death the righteous seek refuge in God.”

Solomon here compares two different situations between the destiny of a wicked person to the destiny of a righteous person. When a wicked person finds trouble, he is helpless. He will find no comfort. And when God will judge that wicked person, that person will have no defense. There’s a scary verse in Revelations 20:14-15. It says, “Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.” The wicked will not have a place to hide and there will be judgement.

In contrast, when the righteous experience trials, the Lord will be them. The Lord will comfort them. And ultimately, those who are righteous will receive eternal life.

Our ultimate goal in life is not to be rich or have a lot of friends. Our ultimate goal in life is to seek wisdom from God. Our ultimate goal is to continue to seek Jesus Christ.

영원한 생명

우리는 왜 믿는 사람들인가요? 왜 말을 천천히 하고, 화도 천천히 내야 할까요? 왜 우리는 악에서 멀리 떨어져 있어야 할까요?

32절에는 “악인은 그의 환난에 엎드러져도 의인은 그의 죽음에도 소망이 있느니라”라고 했습니다.

솔로몬은 여기서 악인의 운명과 의인의 운명 사이에 두 가지 다른 상황을 비교합니다. 악인이 곤경에 처하면 그는 도움을 받을 수 없습니다. 그는 위안을 찾지 못할 것입니다. 그리고 하나님이 그 악인을 심판하실 때, 그 사람은 변명의 여지가 없을 것입니다. 요한계시록 20장 14-15절에 아주 무서운 구절이 있습니다. “사망과 음부도 불못에 던져지니 이것은 둘째 사망 곧 불못이라. 누구든지 생명책에 기록되지 못한 자는 불못에 던져지리라”라고 했습니다. 악인들은 숨을 곳이 없고 심판을 받을 것입니다.

반대로, 의인이 시험을 겪을 때, 주님이 그들과 함께 하실 것입니다. 주님이 그들을 위로해 주실 것입니다. 그리고 의인들은 영원한 생명을 받을 것입니다.

우리의 삶의 비전은 부자가 되거나 많은 친구를 가지는 것이 아닙니다. 우리의 비전은 하나님으로부터 지혜를 구하는 것입니다. 우리의 비전은 예수 그리스도인줄 믿습니다.

For about three years of my life before I came into ministry, I lived my life with the ultimate goal of taking care of my children. In my mind, I needed to make a lot of money to take care of my children. So, I worked these insane hours and made enough money to be well off. I was considered one of the best in Washington. But even then, there was always an empty hole in my heart. And I found out that the hole was from Jesus not being in my heart.

I said this earlier but I will say it again because it is so important. We were created for far more than simply getting the superficial things out of life. Part of our purpose as believers is to be used by God to help contribute to His righteousness, to help accomplish His purpose in the world. We have a glorious, eternal purpose, far greater than what we can achieve through anger or sin.

So this morning, let us think about all the superficial things that we have In our hearts and let it go. Let us let go of everything we have mastered in this world. Our purpose is much more than just living this life. God has called you and me to become workers in His field. So I pray that whatever we do, we will do everything for His glory,

제가 사역에 들어오기 전 약 3년 동안, 저는 아이들을 돌보는 것을 목표로 살았습니다. 제 마음속에는 아이들을 돌보기 위해 많은 돈을 벌어야 한다는 생각이 있었습니다. 그래서 저는 미친 듯이 일하며 세일즈 하며 적당히 돈을 벌었습니다. 그리고 워싱턴에서는Top 10이었어요. 그러나 그럼에도 불구하고, 제 마음에는 항상 빈 구멍이 있었습니다. 그리고 나중에는 그 구멍이 예수님이 제 마음에 없기 때문이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

제가 좀전에 말했지만 다시 말하겠습니다. 왜냐하면 너무 중요하기 때문입니다. 우리는 단순히 인생에서 돈이나 세상적인 것들을 얻기 위해 창조된 것이 아닙니다. 우리의 목적 중 일부는 하나님의 의에 기여하고, 세상에서 하나님의 목적을 이루는 데 도움을 주기 위해 하나님에 의해 사용되는 것입니다. 우리는 분노나 죄를 통해 달성할 수 있는 것보다 훨씬 더 위대한 영광스럽고 영원한 목적을 가지고 있습니다.

그러니 이 새벽, 우리 마음속에 있는 모든 것들을 생각하고 내려놉시다. 주인 삼은 모든 것들을 내려놉시다. 우리의 비전은 이 세상에서 사는 삶 이상이기 때문입니다. 하나님께서는 여러분과 저를 밭에서 일 할 수있는 일꾼이 되도록 부르셨습니다. 그래서 우리가 하는 모든 일을 하나님의 영광을 위해 할 수 있도록 기도합니다.
