but accurate weights find favor with him.
11:2 교만이 오면 욕도 오거니와 겸손한 자에게는 지혜가 있느니라
2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with humility comes wisdom.
11:3 정직한 자의 성실은 자기를 인도하거니와 사악한 자의 패역은 자기를 망하게 하느니라
3 The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.
11:4 재물은 진노하시는 날에 무익하나 공의는 죽음에서 건지느니라
4 Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath,
but righteousness delivers from death.
11:5 완전한 자의 공의는 자기의 길을 곧게 하려니와 악한 자는 자기의 악으로 말미암아 넘어지리라
5 The righteousness of the blameless makes their paths straight,
but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness.
11:6 정직한 자의 공의는 자기를 건지려니와 사악한 자는 자기의 악에 잡히리라
6 The righteousness of the upright delivers them,
but the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.
11:7 악인은 죽을 때에 그 소망이 끊어지나니 불의의 소망이 없어지느니라
7 Hopes placed in mortals die with them;
all the promise of their power comes to nothing.
11:8 의인은 환난에서 구원을 얻으나 악인은 자기의 길로 가느니라
8 The righteous person is rescued from trouble,
and it falls on the wicked instead.
11:9 악인은 입으로 그의 이웃을 망하게 하여도 의인은 그의 지식으로 말미암아 구원을 얻느니라
9 With their mouths the godless destroy their neighbors,
but through knowledge the righteous escape.
11:10 의인이 형통하면 성읍이 즐거워하고 악인이 패망하면 기뻐 외치느니라
10 When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices;
when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.
11:11 성읍은 정직한 자의 축복으로 인하여 진흥하고 악한 자의 입으로 말미암아 무너지느니라
11 Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted,
but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.
11:12 지혜 없는 자는 그의 이웃을 멸시하나 명철한 자는 잠잠하느니라
12 Whoever derides their neighbor has no sense,
but the one who has understanding holds their tongue.

13 A gossip betrays a confidence,
but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.
11:14 지략이 없으면 백성이 망하여도 지략이 많으면 평안을 누리느니라
14 For lack of guidance a nation falls,
but victory is won through many advisers.
11:15 타인을 위하여 보증이 되는 자는 손해를 당하여도 보증이 되기를 싫어하는 자는 평안하니라
15 Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer,
but whoever refuses to shake hands in pledge is safe.
매우 오래된 말이 있습니다. 중학교와 고등학교 시절에 많이 들었습니다. 선생님들은 종종 "정직은 최고의 정책이다"라고 말했습니다. 이것은 무엇을 의미하는 것일까요? 무슨 결과가 되든, 우리는 서로에게 항상 정직해야 한다는 것을 의미합니다. 셰익스피어는 정직에 대해 이렇게 말했습니다: "정직만큼 가치 있는 유산은 없다." 그는 정직이 다른 어떤 것보다 중요하다고 생각했습니다.
There’s a very old saying. I heard it a lot when I was going through middle school and high school. Teachers would often say, “Honesty is the best policy”. What does this mean? It means that no matter what the consequences are, we should always be honest with one another. Shakespeare said this about honesty: “No legacy is so rich as honesty”. He thought honesty was more important than anything else.
청소년 시절, 저는 매우 반항적이었습니다. 여러분 중 일부는 알고 계실지도 모르겠지만, 저는 한국에서 초등학교를 다니고 미국으로 와서 중학교와 고등학교를 다녔습니다. 한국에 있을 때, 엄청 어렸지만 많은 학원을 학교 후 다녔습니다. 저는 밤 8시나 9시까지 집에 오지 않았습니다. 그래서 미국에 왔을 때, 모든 것이 너무 좋았습니다. 학원을 가지않았어요. 한국의 학교 과제에 비하면 미국의 학교 과제가 매우 쉬웠습니다. 그래서 공부를 아예 안했습니다. 그러나 고등학교에 가니 모든 것이 변했습니다. 수업이 어려워졌지만, 한국에서의 공부로 지쳐서 공부를 완전히 손 때있는 상태였습니다. 숙제도 안 했습니다. 그래도 신기하게 제 학점은 3.3이었습니다. 그러나 이런 학점은 부모님께서 받아들일 수 없었습니다. 부모님이 저에게 많은 것을 기대하셨습니다. 학기가 끝나고 학교 성적표는 우편으로 보내졌습니다. 그러나 저는 부모님이 3.3을 보는 것을 원하지 않았습니다. 그래서 매일 우편을 확인하고 마침내 성적표를 찾아서 숨겼습니다. 몇 일 후, 엄마는 우편함에 아직 보이지 않기 때문에 저에게 성적표에 대해서 물어봤습니다. 그래서 제가 곧 도착할 것이라고 대답했습니다. 그 날 밤, 저는 상상도 할 수 없는 가장 어리석은 짓을 했습니다. 부모님이 위층에서 잠들었는지 확인한 후, 아래층에서 제 성적표를 열고 수정했습니다. A 등급을 몇 개 인쇄해서 자르고 성적표에 붙였습니다. 그리고 그것의 사본을 뽑아 다음날 엄마에게 보여주었습니다. 물론, 곧 제 거짓말이 들통나서 거의 죽을 뻔했던게 기억이 납니다.
기독교인으로서, 우리는 어디서 정직에 대해 입장을 가져야 할까요? 잠언 10-15장에서, 솔로몬은 의인과 악인을 비교합니다. 어제는 말을 조심하라는 것이었습니다. 오늘의 성경은 정직과 성실에 관한 것입니다.
When I was a teenager, I was very rebellious. As some of you might know, I went to elementary school in Korea and then went to middle school and high school in the United States. And when I lived in Korea, I went to so many after-school programs and academies. I didn’t get home till about 8 or 9 at night. So when I came to the United States, everything changed. I didn’t have to go to anymore after-school programs, no academies. Schoolwork was very easy compared to the schoolwork in Korea. But when I went to high school, everything changed. Classes started to get harder but I was so burned out studying in Korea that I stopped studying. I didn’t do my homework. And somehow my GPA was around a 3.3. But this GPA was unacceptable for my parents. My parents expected so much out of me. So school transcripts were normally sent in the mail. And I did not want my parents to see the 3.3. So I checked the mail every single day and then finally snatched the transcript and initially hid it. My mom asked me a couple days later because she hasn’t seen it in the mailbox yet. So then I said something like it should get here soon. So that night, I did the unthinkable, most stupid thing I can do. I made sure my parents were upstairs sleeping. Downstairs, I opened up my transcript and edited the transcript.
I printed some A’s, cut them and glued it on the transcript. Then I made a photocopy of it and showed it to my mom the very next day. Of course, I was soon caught up in my lie and almost died. But that is a story for next time.
As Christians, where should we stand in terms of honesty? In Proverbs Chapters 10-15, Solomon compares the righteous and the wicked. Yesterday it was about watching your words. In today’s scriptures, it is about honest and integrity.
의인의 성실 (V. 1-8)
지혜롭고 의로운 사람들은 정직하게 삶을 삽니다. 이것은 교회에서만 이렇게 행동 하는것이 아니라, 우리의 집과 직장에서도 일어나야합니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 우리는 왜 정직하고 성실하게 살지 못하는 것일까요? 종종, 우리의 자만심이 방해가 됩니다. 우리 문화는 "자부심"을 좋은 것으로 생각합니다. 예를 들어, 우리는 사람들에게 높은 자존감을 가져야 한다고 권장하고, 그들이 누구인지에 대해 자랑스러워 해야 한다고 말합니다. 우리가 그런 말을 할 때, "자부심"이 성경에서 말하는 것과는 다르다는 것을 의미할 때도 있습니다. 예를 들면 "자신감"을 의미할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 때로는 성경에서 말하는 자부심과 매우 유사한 것을 의미합니다. 그리고 솔로몬은 2절에서 자만심이 승리로 이끌지 않고, 오직 수치로만 이끈다고 말했습니다. 그러나 겸손 — 성경의 의미에서의 겸손, 즉 자신을 자신보다 더 크게 생각하지 않고, 대신에 하나님이나 다른 사람들에 대해 생각하는 것 — 은 지혜에서 나옵니다. 이 잠언에서 명시적으로 언급되지는 않지만, 이런 종류의 겸손은 신뢰할 수 있는 기반과 진정한 자신감의 삶을 위한 것입니다.
Integrity of the righteous (V. 1-8)
Those who are wise and righteous live their lives honestly. This doesn’t just happen in church, but it also happens at our homes and our workplaces. However, how come we can’t live full of honesty and integrity? Often times, our pride gets in the way. Our culture tends to think of “pride” as a good thing. We encourage people to have high self-esteem, for instance, and tell people they should be proud about who they are. Often when we say things like that, we mean something different by “pride” than the Bible does. We might mean “confidence,” for instance. But at other times we mean something very similar to what the Bible means by pride. And Solomon said in verse 2 that pride does not lead to victory but it will lead to disgrace.. But humility—in the biblical sense of humility, meaning not thinking of yourself as greater than you are, but rather spending your time thinking about God or other people—comes from wisdom. It goes unsaid in this proverb, but this kind of humility is a sure foundation for a life of credibility and genuine confidence.
하나님 앞에서 진정한 겸손을 보이면, 솔로몬은 6절에서 우리가 구원받게 될 것이라고 썼습니다. 8절에서는, 그는 우리가 환난에서 구원받게 될 것이라고 썼습니다.
정직과 성실의 방해가 되는 것은 자만심 뿐만 아니라 돈(4)과 우리의 육체(6)입니다.
로마서 8:5에는 이렇게 쓰여있습니다:
육신을 따르는 자는 육신의 일을, 영을 따르는 자는 영의 일을 생각하나니
육체는 육체에 의해 주도되는 욕구와 필요를 나타냅니다. 육체에 따라 걷는 자들은 이러한 이기적인 욕구와 필요만을 충족시키는 데 중점을 둡니다. 그러나, 우리는 영으로 살아야 합니다. 우리는 하나님이 워하시는 대로 살아야 합니다. 그러므로, 정직하고 성실하게 사는 것은 성령대로 살아가는 것과 동일합니다.
When you display true humility in the face of God, Solomon wrote in verse 6 that we will be delivered. In verse 8, he wrote that we will be rescued from trouble.
Not only does pride get in the way of honesty and integrity but so does money (4) and our own flesh (6).
In Romans 8:5, it is written:
Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
The flesh refers to the wants and needs driven by the physical body. Those who walk by the flesh focus only on meeting those selfish wants and needs. However, we need to live according to the Spirit. We need to live according to what God wants for us. So living with honesty and integrity equals to living by the Holy Spirit
악인과 의인의 교회에 대한 영향 (V. 9-15)
결국, 우리 기독교인들이 왜 정직하고 성실하게 살아야 할까요? 이것은 우리 자신의 구원만을 영향을 주는 것이 아니라, 교회와 우리 주변을 영향을 미치기 때문입니다. 9절에서, 솔로몬은 악인의 입을 통해 이웃이 멸망하게 될 것이라고 썼습니다. 11절에서, 그는 악인의 입을 통해 도시도 멸망하게 될 것이라고 썼습니다.
예수님은 우리가 세상의 소금과 빛이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님은 우리가 될 수 있다고 말씀하지 않으셨습니다. 예수님은 우리가 그렇다고 말씀하셨습니다. 당시에 소금은 어떤 용도로 사용되었을까요? 소금은 천연 방부제로 사용되었습니다. 알다시피 그 당시에는 냉장고가 없었기 때문에, 그들은 물고기가 상하지 않도록 소금과 함께 보관했습니다. 그리고 이 세상의 소금으로서, 우리가 이 세상이 상하지 않도록 방부제 역할을 해야된다는 것입니다.
The influence of the wicked and righteous to the church (V. 9-15)
Ultimately, why do we as Christians need to live with honesty and integrity? Not only does it affect our own salvation, but it also affects the church and our surroundings. In verse 9, Solomon writes that through the mouths of the wicked, the neighbors will be destroyed. In verse 11, Solomon writes that, through the mouth of the wicked, the city will also be destroyed.
Just said that we are the salt and light of this world. Jesus didn’t say that we can be but Jesus said that we ARE. Do you know what salt was used for during this time? Salt was used as a natural preservative. As you know they didn’t have refrigerators back in the day, so they would store fish with salt so that the fish would not go bad. And us as the salt of this world, we need to inhibit the sin that exists in this world. We need to preserve the fish or people of this world so they do not go bad.
마태복음 5:13에 이렇게 쓰여 있습니다: "너희는 세상의 소금이니 소금이 만일 그 맛을 잃으면 무엇으로 짜게 하리요 후에는 아무 쓸 데 없어 다만 밖에 버려져 사람에게 밟힐 뿐이니라 ." 예수님은 우리가 우리의 구원을 잃을 수 있다고 말하지 않았습니다. 우리가 짠맛을 잃을 수 있다고 말했습니다. 소금이 오염되면 어떻게 될까요? 그것은 부식되고 독성이 생깁니다. 오염된 소금은 심지어 밭에 비료로도 사용될 수 없기 때문에 버려져야 합니다. 만약 우리가 불순종, 부주의 및 무관심, 자만심, 이 세상을 우리의 삶에서 지배하도록 허락했다면, 우리는 오염된 소금이 되어 우리의 짠맛을 잃어버린 자들이 되는것입니다. 우리의 죄를 고백하고 하나님의 비전, 부르심으로 다시 돌아가야 하는 줄 믿습니다.
진정한 회개를 통해 우리 모두가 우리의 짠맛을 되찾아 이 세상에 올바른 영향을 줄 수 있기를 기도합니다.
The second half of Matthew 5:13 states: "But if salt loses its taste, how would its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men". Jesus did not say that we can lose our salvation; He said that we can lose our saltiness. When salt is contaminated, do you know what happens? It becomes corrosive and poisonous. Contaminated salt cannot even be used for fertilizer on the field, so it has to be thrown out. If we have allowed disobedience, carelessness and indifference, pride, the world to rule our lives, we have become contaminated salt and have lost our saltiness. We need to confess our sin and let the Lord restore us to the purpose for which we were called.
Through true repentance, I pray that we may all regain our saltiness and be a positive influence for the world.
