4:7 우리 각 사람에게 그리스도의 선물의 분량대로 은혜를 주셨나니
7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.
4:8 그러므로 이르기를 그가 위로 올라가실 때에 사로잡혔던 자들을 사로잡으시고 사람들에게 선물을 주셨다 하였도다
8 This is why it says:
“When he ascended on high,
he took many captives
and gave gifts to his people.”
4:9 올라가셨다 하였은즉 땅 아래 낮은 곳으로 내리셨던 것이 아니면 무엇이냐
9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions?
4:10 내리셨던 그가 곧 모든 하늘 위에 오르신 자니 이는 만물을 충만하게 하려 하심이라
10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)
4:11 그가 어떤 사람은 사도로, 어떤 사람은 선지자로, 어떤 사람은 복음 전하는 자로, 어떤 사람은 목사와 교사로 삼으셨으니
11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers,
4:12 이는 성도를 온전하게 하며 봉사의 일을 하게 하며 그리스도의 몸을 세우려 하심이라
12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
4:13 우리가 다 하나님의 아들을 믿는 것과 아는 일에 하나가 되어 온전한 사람을 이루어 그리스도의 장성한 분량이 충만한 데까지 이르리니
13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
4:14 이는 우리가 이제부터 어린 아이가 되지 아니하여 사람의 속임수와 간사한 유혹에 빠져 온갖 교훈의 풍조에 밀려 요동하지 않게 하려 함이라
14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.
4:15 오직 사랑 안에서 참된 것을 하여 범사에 그에게까지 자랄지라 그는 머리니 곧 그리스도라
15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.
4:16 그에게서 온 몸이 각 마디를 통하여 도움을 받음으로 연결되고 결합되어 각 지체의 분량대로 역사하여 그 몸을 자라게 하며 사랑 안에서 스스로 세우느니라
16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
작물이 정상적으로 자라기 위해서는 여러 종류의 영양분이 적당한 비율로 공급되어야 합니다.
이들 영양분 중 어떤 한가지 성분이 부족하면 그 작물은 그 부족한 영양분에 의해 지배되고, 다른 영양분에는 영향을 받지 않습니다.
이러한 이론은 1840년 독일의 화학자 리비히Justus von Liebig에 의해 처음 주장되었기에, 이를 리비히의 법칙 또는 최소율의 법칙low of minium이라고 합니다.
리비히의 법칙은 다른 영양소의 존재량과는 상관없이 성장은 제한요인limiting factor으로 작용하는 성분에 의해 결정된다는 이론으로 가장 부족한 요소가 식물의 성장을 좌우한다는 이론입니다.
결국 그 식물의 성장은 가장 많은 양의 영양소가 아닌 가장 적은 영양소에 의해 결정되는 것입니다.
이를 아주 잘 보여주는 것이 리비히의 물통Liebig's barrel입니다.
나무 널판지를 연결하여 만든 중세 시대 유럽의 물통을 보신 적이 있을 것입니다.
그 나무 물통에 채워지는 물의 양은 가장 길이가 짧은 나무판에 의해 결정됩니다.
그래서 물통은 널판지들의 길이를 동일하게 자르고 쇠고랑으로 벌어지지 않도록 조여 놓는 것입니다.
만일 널판지 하나가 다른 나머지 널판지들보다 짧다면 그 물통에 담기는 물의 양은 바로 그 가장 짧은 널판지의 높이까지 일 것입니다.
For crops to grow properly, various nutrients need to be supplied in the right proportions. If any one of these nutrients is lacking, the growth of the crop is dominated by that missing nutrient and is not affected by other nutrients. This theory was first proposed by the German chemist Justus von Liebig in 1840, hence it is called Liebig's Law or the Law of the Minimum. Liebig's Law posits that growth is determined by the nutrient that acts as a limiting factor, regardless of the presence of other nutrients. Essentially, the growth of the plant is determined not by the nutrient in greatest supply but by the one in least supply. A great illustration of this is Liebig's barrel.
You might have seen medieval European barrels made by linking wooden staves. The amount of water that can be held in such a barrel is determined by the shortest stave. Hence, barrels are made by cutting the staves to the same length and binding them tightly to prevent gaps. If one stave is shorter than the others, the amount of water the barrel can hold is limited by the height of that shortest stave.
분량대로 은혜를 주심 (7~10절)
교회나 공동체가 하나되는 일은 매우 중요한 일입니다.
그래서 바울은 4장 1절부터 6절에서 하나됨을 강조했습니다. 또한 성도는 그 하나됨을 지켜야 합니다.
바울은 오늘 본문인 7절부터는 하나됨 가운데 다양성을 말하고 있습니다.
예수님은 우리 각사람에게 맞는 분량대로 은혜를 주셨습니다(7).
여기서 말하는 은혜는 구원이 아닌 은사와 관련된 은혜입니다.
그렇게 각 사람에게 맞는 분량대로 은혜를 주시기 위해서 주님이 하신 일은 낮아지심, 곧 비하 卑下Humiliation와 높아지심, 곧 승귀 昇貴Exaltation입니다(9, 10a).
낮아지셨다는 것은 인간의 육신을 입고 이 땅에 오시어 십자가에 죽으신 것을 의미합니다.
높아지심은 죽음에서 삼일만에 부활하시고, 승천하시어 하나님의 보좌 우편에 앉으심을 의미합니다.
바울이 8~10절에서 말하고 있는 것이 바로 이것입니다.
특별히 그가 위로 올라가실 때에 사로잡혔던 자들을 사로잡으시고 사람들에게 선물을 주셨다(8)는 것은 시편의 말씀을 인용한 것입니다.
주께서 높은 곳으로 오르시며 사로잡은 자들을 취하시고 선물들을 사람들에게서 받으시며 반역자들로부터도 받으시니 여호와 하나님이 그들과 함께 계시기 때문이로다 (시 68:18)
이 시편은 전쟁의 승리자가 전리품을 자신이 구속한 자들과 나누는 모습을 노래한 것입니다.
예수님은 우리를 구속하시고는 그 은혜를 각 사람의 분량대로 나눠 주신다는 것입니다.
이렇게 각 사람에게 분량대로 은사를 주신 이유는 만물을 충만하게 하시기 위해서 입니다(10).
F.F. Bruce에 의하면 만물을 충만하게 한다는 것은 주께서 온우주를 당신의 주권 아래두고 통치하시며, 모든 존재들의 생명을 주관하시고 영향력을 행사하는 것을 의미합니다.
그러므로 은사를 받은 자가 그것을 사용하지 않는 것은 직무유기인 것입니다.
Grace as God apportioned for us (Verses 7-10)
The unity of the church or community is extremely important. This is why Paul emphasized unity from verses 1 to 6 of chapter 4. Also, believers must maintain this unity. Starting from today's passage in verse 7, Paul speaks about diversity within this unity.
Jesus has given grace to each of us in the measure that suits us (verse 7). The grace mentioned here is not related to salvation but to spiritual gifts. To bestow this grace in proportion to each individual, the Lord's actions are characterized by His humiliation and exaltation (verses 9-10a). His humiliation refers to Him taking human flesh, coming to this earth, and dying on the cross. His exaltation signifies His resurrection from the dead after three days, His ascension, and His seating at the right hand of God's throne. This is exactly what Paul is talking about in verses 8-10.
Specifically, when He ascended, He took captive those who had previously captured Him and gave gifts to the people (verse 8). This is a quotation from the Psalms.
When you ascended on high, you took many captives; you received gifts from people,
even from the rebellious— that you, Lord God, might dwell there. (Psalms 68:18)
This Psalm celebrates the victor of a war sharing the spoils with those he has redeemed.
Jesus has redeemed us and then distributes His grace to each of us in proportion to our measure.
The reason He bestows spiritual gifts upon each person in this manner is to fill all things completely (verse 10).
According to F.F. Bruce, to fill all things means that the Lord places the entire universe under His sovereignty, governing the lives of all beings and exerting His influence.
Therefore, for someone who has received a gift to not use it is a dereliction of duty.
직분과 은사의 목적 (11~16절)
바울은 다양한 직분을 열거합니다. 사도는 초대교회에만 존재했던 직분이고, 선지자 역시 구약시대부터 초대교회 까지만 존재했던 직분입니다. 그리고 목사와 교사는 오늘날에도 존재하는 직분입니다.
직분을 주신 분은 예수 그리스도이시며, 그것을 주신 목적은 먼저는 성도를 온전하게 하고, 다음은 성도가 봉사의 일을 하게 하며, 그렇게 하여 최종적으로 그리스도의 몸 된 교회를 든든히 세우기 위함 입니다(12). 이것이 교회 안에 존재하는 통일성과 다양성의 균형입니다.
바울은 이와 관련하여 좀 더 자세한 설명을 합니다.
그리스도의 몸을 세우기 위해서는 성도 개개인이 그리스도의 장성한 분량이 충만한데까지 이르러야 합니다. 그리고 그것은 하나님의 아들을 믿는 것과 아는 일에 하나가 되어 온전한 사람이 되는 것을 의미합니다(13). 믿음은 예수에 대해서 지식과 감정, 그리고 의지적으로 경험하는 것을 의미합니다.
곧 전인적으로 예수 그리스도를 알 때 우리는 어린 아이의 일들을 버릴 수 있습니다.
여기서 비유하는 어린 아이는 그 미숙함을 표현하기 위한 비유입니다. 어린아이는 쉽게 유혹에 빠지고, 속아 넘어갑니다. 예수에 대해서 전인적으로 알고, 경험하고, 믿을 때 이런 유혹을 피할 수 있습니다(14).
바울은 오직 사랑 안에서 참된 것을 하라 명령합니다. 본래의 의미는 참된 것을 말하라는 의미로 곧 진리 되신 예수를 전하고, 예수에 대해서 말하라는 것입니다.
그렇게 할 때 우리는 머리 되신 그리스도에게 까지 자랄 수 있습니다(15).
포도나무 가지가 포도나무를 떠나서 살 수 없듯이, 성도는 머리이신 그리스도를 떠나서는 존재할 수 없습니다. 예수로 말미암아 모든 성도는 연결되어 있고, 성령으로 말미암아 우리는 유기적으로 연합합니다.
또한 우리는 각자에게 주신 각자의 분량대로, 곧 각자의 은사대로 교회를 섬길 때, 머리 되신 예수라는 공통성과 그가 성도 개개인에게 분량대로 주신 은사의 다양성 가운데 교회는 성장하는 것입니다.
Roles and Purpose of Gifts (verses 11-16)
Paul enumerates various roles. The apostles were roles that existed only in the early church, and the prophets too were roles that existed from the Old Testament era up to the early church. Pastors and teachers, however, are roles that exist even today.
The one who has given these roles is Jesus Christ, and the purpose of bestowing them is primarily to perfect the saints, then to equip the saints for the work of ministry, and ultimately to build up the body of Christ, the church (verse 12). This is the balance of unity and diversity within the church.
Paul elaborates further on this.
To build up the body of Christ, each saint must grow until they reach the full stature of Christ. This means becoming a mature person in unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God (verse 13). Faith entails experiencing Jesus in knowledge, emotion, and will.
When we know Jesus Christ personally, we can leave behind childish ways.
The reference to a child here is a metaphor for immaturity. Children are easily tempted and deceived. By personally knowing, experiencing, and believing in Jesus, one can avoid such temptations (verse 14).
Paul commands to speak the truth in love. The original intent means to speak about Jesus, who is the truth.
By doing so, we can grow up into Him who is the head, Christ (verse 15).
Just as a grapevine branch cannot live apart from the grapevine, saints cannot exist apart from Christ, the head. Because of Jesus, all saints are interconnected, and through the Holy Spirit, we are organically united.
Furthermore, when we serve the church according to each one's measure, that is, according to each one's giftedness, the church grows amid the commonality of Jesus as the head and the diversity of gifts He has given to each individual saint.
에베소서 4장에서 분량이라는 단어가 3회(7, 13, 16절), 사랑안에서 라는 단어가 3회(2, 15, 16절) 등장합니다. 결국 예수 그리스도를 머리로 하는 교회가 성장하기 위해서는 그분의 사랑 안에서, 그분이 우리 각자에게 주신 은사의 분량대로 섬겨야 한다는 것입니다.
누구도 나무 물통에서 가장 짧은 널판지가 되어서는 안 됩니다. 함께 그리스도의 사랑안에서 같이 성장해야 합니다. 나의 성장이 교회의 성장을 좌우합니다. 명심해야 합니다!
In Ephesians chapter 4, the word "measure" appears three times (verses 7, 13, 16) and the phrase "in love" also appears three times (verses 2, 15, 16). Ultimately, for the church, with Christ as its head, to grow, we must serve in His love and according to the measure of gifts He has given each of us.
No one should be the shortest stave in the wooden barrel. We must grow together in the love of Christ. My growth affects the growth of the church. We must keep this in mind!
