16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.

17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.

18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
2:21 그의 안에서 건물마다 서로 연결하여 주 안에서 성전이 되어 가고
21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.
2:22 너희도 성령 안에서 하나님이 거하실 처소가 되기 위하여 예수 안에서 함께 지어져 가느니라
22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
"God is not dead"라는 영화가 2014년에 나왔습니다. 영화의 주인공은 Shane Harper라는 믿음이 좋은 기독교인 청년입니다. 그는 영화에서 하나님의 존재를 증명하려고 합니다. 만약 그렇지 못하면 그의 대학 철학 교수는 철악 수업에서 F를 받는다고 합니다. 교수는 영화 초반에 다음과 같이 말합니다.
"여러분들에게 Chain Saw Massacre 라는 영화가 우주의 창조자를 조사하는 영화보다 더 매력적이라는 것이 너무 흥미롭습니다. 세상의 빛인 예수님은 당신들의 어둠을 드러냅니다. 당신들은 하나님의 존재를 싫어하는것입니다!"
There is a movie called “God is not dead” that came out in 2014. The main character in the movie is Shane Harper and he is a devout Christian. In the movie, he is trying to prove the existence of God. If he was not able to, his college philosophy Professor would fail him. The professor towards the beginning of the movie said this,
“I find it revealing that Chain Saw Massacre is more inspiring to you than a film that investigates a Creator of the universe. Jesus the Light of the world reveals your darkness, so you hate Him!”
교수는 학생들에게 당신들은 Chain Saw Massacre 같은 공포 영화에 더 관심이 있다고 말하고 있습니다. 그는 학생들에게 하나님에 대한 관심이 없으므로 하나님은 죽었다고 말하고 있습니다.
많은 기독교인들이 이런 반반의 삶을 살고 있습니다. 우리는 주일날과 수요일 그리고 심지어 매일 새벽기도로 교회에 가지만, 나머지 시간들은 우리 개인의 관심사, 목표, 꿈을 추구하며 살아갑니다. 2023년의 슬로건이 "All in for Jesus"이라는 것 기억하시죠? 우리가 이 2023년도에 남은 3개월을 잘 마무리하면서 예수님께 모든 것을 드릴 수 있는 성도님들이 되시길 부탁을 드립니다.
The professor was telling his students that you guys are more interested in movies like the Chain Saw Massacre. He was telling the students that they have no interest in God and therefore, God is dead.
A lot of Christians live this life of going in halfway. We go to church on Sundays and maybe Wednesdays, but the rest of the days, we live pursuing our personal interests, goals, and dreams. If you remember our slogan for 2023, it is “All in for Jesus”. I pray that we will end this year strong, going all in for Jesus.
이방인의 삶 (V.11-12)
오늘의 성경에서는 유대인과 이방인 사이의 차이를 볼 수 있습니다. 유대인들은 하나님에게 접근할 수 있었지만 이방인들은 그렇지 않았습니다. Pastor John Stott에 따르면 이방인들은 “그리스도 없이, 국가 없이, 친구 없이, 희망 없이, 하나님 없이” 살고 있다고 합니다. 하나님이 없는 세상을 상상하는 것이 얼마나 슬픈가요. 영화의 대학 교수는 정말로 하나님이 없다고 믿고 있습니다. 그는 하나님 없는 삶을 살고 있습니다.
하지만 교회 안에도 하나님 없는 삶을 살고 있는 사람들이 실제로 있습니다. 양다리의 삶을 살고 있는 사람들이 있습니다. 하나님을 사랑하는 사람들도 있지만 세상을 포기할 수 없는 사람들도 있습니다.
Spurgeon은 하나님 없이 살고 있는 것에 대해 다음과 같이 말했습니다.
"그리스도 없이! 이것이 당신들 중 일부의 설명이라면, 우리는 당신들에게 지옥의 불에 대해 말할 필요가 없습니다; 이 두 단어 안에 빽빽하게 뭉쳐져 있는 끔찍한 악을 발견하는 것만으로도 충분히 당신들을 놀라게 할 것입니다."
하나님이 그의 아들 예수 그리스도를 우리를 구원하러 보내지 않았더라면 얼마나 슬플까요.
Life of a Gentile (V.11-12)
In today’s scriptures, we the difference between the Jews and Gentiles. While the Jews had access to God, the Gentiles did not. The Gentiles, according to Pastor John Stott, were “Christless, stateless, friendless, hopeless, and Godless”. Isn’t it so sad to imagine a world without God. The college professor from the movie truly believed that there is no God. He lived a Godless life.
But the reality is that there are people even in the church who are living Godless lives. Those who are living “two-timer lives”. Those who also love God but also cannot let go of the world.
Spurgeon said this about being without God.
“Without Christ! If this be the description of some of you, we need not talk to you about the fires of hell; let this be enough to startle you, that you are in such a desperate state as to be without Christ. Oh! What terrible evils lie clustering thick within these two words!”
How sad it would have been if God never sent his son Jesus Christ to save us.
하나님과의 회복(V.13-18)
진정으로 하나님께 오고 구원받는 유일한 방법이 있습니다. 교회에 오는 것만으로는 이루어지지 않습니다. 교회에서 봉사하는 것만으로는 이루어지지 않습니다. 그것은 예수 그리스도를 통해 이루어집니다. 그것은 예수 그리스도의 사랑을 통해 이루어집니다. 그것은 예수 그리스도의 피를 통해 이루어집니다.

그 당시 성전에서는 유대인과 이방인 사이의 실제적인 장벽, 실제적인 분리 벽이 있었습니다. 바울이 이 편지를 쓸 때, 그는 로마에서 집에 갇혀 있었습니다. 그는 유대인에게 이방인을 유대인과 이방인을 구분하는 벽을 넘어 성전에 데려갔다는 것으로 거짓으로 고발당하면서 재판을 기다리고 있었습니다. 바울은 그의 발언에서 이 벽이 사라졌다고 명확하게 말했습니다.
유대인과 이방인은 매우 다르지만, 그들은 예수 그리스도의 이름과 피를 통해 함께 합쳐졌습니다.
Reunited with God (V.13-18)
There is really only one way to truly come to God and be saved. It doesn’t happen from just coming to church. It doesn’t happen from serving in the church. It happens through Jesus Christ. It happens through the love of Jesus Christ. It happens through the blood of Jesus Christ.
For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility (V.14-16)
So during that time in the temple, there was a physical barrier, an actual wall of separation between the Jews and the Gentiles. When Paul was writing this letter, he was under house arrest in Rome. He was awaiting trial because he was falsely accused by the Jews of taking a Gentile into the temple past the wall of separation dividing the Jews and the Gentiles. Paul made it clear in his statement that this wall is gone.
Although the Jews and Gentiles were very different, they came together through the name and blood of Jesus Christ.
모퉁이 돌 (V.19-22)
한 때 유대인과 이방인은 분리되어 있었지만, 이제 그들은 하나님 안에서 한 가족입니다. 이 단합은 주요 모퉁이인 예수 그리스도 자신 위에 지어졌습니다.
그럼 이 주요 모퉁이 돌이 무엇일까요? 건물은 일반적으로 네 개의 모퉁이가 있고 돌로 지어졌습니다. 주요 모퉁이 돌은 건물의 한 모퉁이에 땅에 처음으로 놓인 돌입니다. 만약 그 돌이 조금도 기울어져 있다면, 전체 건물이 조금 기울어질 것입니다. 만약 그 돌이 너무 기울어져 있다면, 전체 건물은 기울어져서 무너질 위험이 있습니다.
만약 제가 무언가를 지으면서 기초를 놓았는데 주요 모퉁이 돌을 기울게 놓았다고 생각해보십시오. 저는 그 위에 벽을 지었는데 계속 기울어지겠죠? 저는 어떻게 해야 할까요?
계속해서 기울게 만들어야 할까요, 아니면 그냥 멈추고 부수고 다시 시작해야 할까요? 비록 오랜 시간이 걸리더라도 벽을 부수고 다시 시작해야 합니다.
Chief Cornerstone (V.19-22) Although at one point, the Jews and Gentiles were divided, they are now fellow citizens and members of God’s household. And this unity was built upon Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
So what is this chief cornerstone? A building typically had four corners and were built with stones. The chief cornerstone as the first stone laid down on the ground at one corner of the building. If the chief cornerstone was laid even slightly angled, the whole building would be slightly angled. If this chief cornerstone was slanted, the whole building would end up slanted and risked to collapse.
Let’s say I am building something. I laid out the foundation but I laid out the chief cornerstone slanted. I started building a wall on top of it, and it comes out slanted. What should I do?
Should I just continue to build and just make all four corners slanted, or should I just stop, demolish it, and start over again. Although it might take a long time, I should demolish the wall and start over again.
피사의 사탑은 매우 특이한 건물입니다. 이것은 세 명의 건축가를 거쳐서 만들어진 완성품입니다. 지어진지 얼마 안 돼 한쪽 아래 땅이 가라앉기 시작했기 때문에 건축가들은 다른 쪽의 기둥을 조금 더 크게 만들려고 했습니다. 하지만 그것은 전혀 도움이 되지 않았습니다. 그들은 탑을 안정화시키기 위해 여러 가지 다른 방법을 시도했습니다. 바닥에 시멘트를 주입하거나 기울지 않은 쪽의 토양을 제거하는 것처럼요. 그것은 조금 도움이 되었지만 이 탑은 여전히 기울어져 있습니다. 물리학자들은 이 탑이 200 - 300년 안에 무너질 것이라고 말하고 있습니다.

The leaning tower of Pisa is a very interesting case. It went through three different architects. Not long after it was built, the ground under one side start to sink so the builders try to make the columns on the other side a little bigger. But that didn’t work at all. They tried many other things to stabilize the tower, like injecting cement in the ground and removing soil underneath the side that was not leaning. That worked a little but this tower is still leaning. Physicists say that this tower will fall in the next 200 – 300 years.
What should have happened to this tower of Pisa in the early stages? The architect should have probably rebuilt it.
This is the same for us. If we feel our faith is weak, we need to go back to the basics. We need to go back to the foundation of our faith which is Jesus Christ.
마태복음 7:24-27에서 예수님은 이렇게 말했습니다.
그러므로 누구든지 나의 이 말을 듣고 행하는 자는 그 집을 반석 위에 지은 지혜로운 사람 같으리니 비가 내리고 창수가 나고 바람이 불어 그 집에 부딪치되 무너지지 아니하나니 이는 주추를 반석 위에 놓은 까닭요 나의 이 말을 듣고 행하지 아니하는 자는 그 집을 모래 위에 지은 어리석은 사람 같으리니 비가 내리고 창수가 나고 바람이 불어 그 집에 부딪치매 무너져 그 무너짐이 심하니라
그럼 우리는 무엇을 기반으로 삶을 살아야 할까요? 우리는 어떤 것을 기초로 가져야 할까요?
하나님의 말씀입니다. 예수 그리스도의 가르침입니다. 하나님의 말씀으로 돌아오면, 예수님은 우리의 기초를 새롭게 시작하게 될 것이며, 우리는 견고한 기초로 건물을 지을 수 있습니다. 그래서 오늘 하나님 말씀 앞에서 제대로 우리의 믿음을 지읍시다. 만약에 살짝 기우러졌다 생각하시면 무너트리고 그리스도인의 초심으로 다시 돌아갑시다. 만약에 모퉁이 돌을 잘 새우셨다면 계속 예수님의 가르침과 하나님 말씀의 바탕으로 우리의 건물을 잘 지어갈수 있는 우리가 되길 소망합니다.
Jesus said this in Matthew 7:24-27:
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
So what should we base our life on? What should we have as our foundation?
The Word of God. The teachings of Jesus Christ. When we come back to the Word of God, Jesus will start our foundation fresh and we’ll be able to build a building with a solid foundation.
