1:1 하나님의 뜻으로 말미암아 그리스도 예수의 사도 된 바울은 에베소에 있는 성도들과 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 신실한 자들에게 편지하노니
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,
To God’s holy people in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus:
1:2 하나님 우리 아버지와 주 예수 그리스도로부터 은혜와 평강이 너희에게 있을지어다
2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
1:3 찬송하리로다 하나님 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지께서 그리스도 안에서 하늘에 속한 모든 신령한 복을 우리에게 주시되
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
1:4 곧 창세 전에 그리스도 안에서 우리를 택하사 우리로 사랑 안에서 그 앞에 거룩하고 흠이 없게 하시려고
4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love

5 he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—

6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace

10 to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.
1:11 모든 일을 그의 뜻의 결정대로 일하시는 이의 계획을 따라 우리가 예정을 입어 그 안에서 기업이 되었으니
11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,
1:12 이는 우리가 그리스도 안에서 전부터 바라던 그의 영광의 찬송이 되게 하려 하심이라
12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.

13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
1:14 이는 우리의 기업의 보증이 되사 그 얻으신 것을 속량하시고 그의 영광을 찬송하게 하려 하심이라
14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
에베소서는 서신중의 여왕, 가장 영적인 저술, 기독교의 구원과 교회에 관한 대서사시라고 불릴 만큼 바울의 서신서들 중에서도 교리적 진술이 매우 논리적인 완벽한 서신서입니다.
특별한 교회의 직면한 문제에 관한 내용이 아닌, 그리스도와 교회에 관한 하나님의 우주적 경륜, 곧 그리스도 안에서 만유의 통일이라는 하나님의 계획을 다루고 있습니다.
전형적인 서신의 형식으로 시작하는 본 서신은 서신 자체적으로(1:1; 3:1) 저자를 사도 바울로 밝히고 있습니다.
수신자는 에베소에 있는 성도들입니다. 하지만 바로 이어서 나오는 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 신실한 자들에게 편지하노니(1b)에서 알 수 있듯, 본 서신은 에베소를 시작으로 하는 회람서신일 가능성이 높습니다. 그리고 회람을 했다면 골로새 교회와 라오디게아 교회가 이어서 본서신을 읽었을 것입니다.

Ephesians is the queen of the epistles, a deeply spiritual treatise, and a logically perfect doctrinal statement among Paul's epistles.
It doesn't focus on specific problems faced by a particular church, but rather addresses God's cosmic plan regarding Christ and the Church: the unification of all things in Christ.
The epistle clearly identifies Paul as its author in its typical epistolary form (1:1; 3:1).
It is addressed to the saints in Ephesus. However, as it mentions "to the faithful in Christ Jesus" (1b), there is a high possibility that this epistle was a circular letter, beginning with Ephesus and then read by churches in Colossae and Laodicea, similar to when Paul asked the letter to the Colossians to be read in Laodicea (Col 4:16).
에베소는 바울이 3차 전도 여행 중에 3년 동안 목회를 했던 지역입니다.
3년 동안 목회 활동을 성공적으로 이룬 에베소에서는 세례 요한의 제자 12명에게 세례를 주었고(행 19:1~11), 두란노 서원에서 강론을 했으며(행 19:8~10), 바울의 손수건만 가져다 대면 귀신이 물러갔고(행 19:12), 마술사가 개종을 하는가 하면(행 19:17~20), 은장색 더메드리오가 사람들을 부추겨서 소동(행 19:23~41)이 일어나기도 했습니다.
본서신은 빌립보서, 골로새서, 빌레몬서와 더불어 옥중서신이라 불리는데, 바울이 감옥에 갇혀 있는 동안 기록한 편지들이기 때문입니다. 기록 연대는 가이사랴 감옥에 갇혔을 때(A.D.57-59)과 로마 감옥에 갇혔을 때(A.D. 60-62)로 나뉘는데, 후자가 더 설득력이 있습니다.
Ephesus is where Paul ministered for 3 years during his third missionary journey.
His successful ministry there included baptizing twelve disciples of John the Baptist (Acts 19:1-11), lecturing at the Hall of Tyrannus (Acts 19:8-10), performing miracles where even his handkerchief drove out demons (Acts 19:12), witnessing sorcerers converting (Acts 19:17-20), and encountering a riot instigated by the silversmith Demetrius (Acts 19:23-41).
This letter, along with Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon, is referred to as the "Prison Epistles" because they were written while Paul was imprisoned. The possible dates are when he was imprisoned in Caesarea (A.D. 57-59) and in Rome (A.D. 60-62), with the latter being more likely.
성부 하나님, 구원을 계획하시다 (1~6절)
바울은 전형적인 서신서의 형태로 시작을 합니다. 그의 인사말은 늘 그렇듯이 하나님의 뜻으로 말미암아 그리스도 예수의 사도된 바울(1a)이라는 확고한 정체성입니다.
그의 사도성은 항상 대적자들에게 있어서 좋은 공격감이었습니다. 예수님이 이 땅에 계실 때 만난적이 없고, 심지어 예수를 믿던 자들을 잡아 죽이던 바울이 13번째 사도가 된다는 것은 쉽게 이해할 수 없는 부분입니다. 하지만 하나님은 약한 자를 들어서 강한 자들을 부끄럽게 하시는 분입니다.
오히려 사도로서의 결격 사유가 바울을 더욱 충성하게 했던 것입니다.
바울은 수신자인 에베소 교인들과 경건하고 신실한 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 성도들에게 성부와 성자가 베푸시는 은혜와 평강을 빌어 줍니다.
바울은 이어서 큰소리로 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지 되시는 하나님을 찬양합니다(3).
찬양의 이유는 그리스도 안에서 하늘에 속한 모든 신령한 복을 우리에게 주셨기 때문입니다.
하나님이 주신 모든 신령한 복은 무엇일까요? 그것은 바로 구원과 관련된 모든 것들입니다.
먼저 성부께서는 우리의 구원을 계획하셨습니다.
하나님은 그리스도 안에서 우리를 택하시고, 그 기쁘신 뜻대로 우리를 예정하사 자녀 삼으셨습니다(5).
여기서 선택과 예정의 교리가 나온 것입니다. 원래 삼위일체 하나님은 모든 사역을 함께 하십니다.
선택과 예정 역시도 그리스도 안에서, 또는 그리스도를 통하여 하신 일입니다. 하지만 이 모든 것을 계획하시는 분이 성부 하나님이십니다. 그리고 이렇게 구원을 거저 주시는 이유는 우리로 하여금 하나님의 은혜와 영광을 찬송하게 하려는 것입니다.
God the Father, Planning Salvation (vv. 1-6):
Paul begins in typical epistolary form, confidently identifying himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ by God's will (1a).
His apostleship was often a point of contention since he hadn't met Jesus during His time on earth and even persecuted early Christians. Yet, God has a way of choosing the weak to shame the strong.
Paul's perceived shortcomings only made him more loyal as an apostle.
Paul blesses the Ephesian Christians and all the saints with grace and peace from God the Father and Jesus Christ.
He then praises God for blessing us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in Christ (v. 3).
So what is this blessing that God gave us. These blessings pertain to our salvation.
First of all, God planned our salvation
God planned it by choosing and predestining us in Christ to be His children (v. 5).
The doctrine of election and predestination is introduced. Although the Triune God always acts in unity, it was the Father's plan that salvation would occur in and through Christ. This was done so that we might praise God's grace and glory.
성자 예수님, 구원을 이루시다 (7~12절)
성부께서 계획하신 구원을 이제 성자께서 이루십니다.
그것은 예수 그리스도의 보혈로 속량, 곧 죄사함을 받는 것입니다(7).
예수가 그리스도임을 알 수 있는 비결은 오직 하나님의 지혜와 총명이 아니고는 있을 수 없는 일입니다.
이것은 하나님이 계획하신, 하나님의 때에 하나님께서 예수 그리스도를 통하여 이루신 것입니다(9~11).
결국 아담과 하와의 범죄로 말미암아 무질서해진 피조세계가 다시 예수 그리스도안에서 질서를 회복하고, 하나의 아름다운 유기체가 되는 것입니다(10). 온 우주의 피조물들이 머리되신 예수 그리스도 안에서 하나가 되고 그의 명령에 복종하게 될 것입니다.
Jesus the Son, Accomplishing Salvation (vv. 7-12):
The Father's plan for salvation is realized through the Son.
This entails redemption and forgiveness of sins through the blood of Christ (v. 7).
Recognizing Jesus as Christ is a mystery that can only be understood through divine wisdom. God planned and fulfilled this in Christ, in His perfect timing (vv. 9-11).
The ultimate goal is for a chaotic world, disordered by Adam and Eve's sin, to be reordered in Christ, becoming a harmonious place (v. 10). Everything in the universe will unite and obey Christ, the head.
성령 하나님, 구원을 완성하시다 (13~14절)
성부께서 계획하시고, 성자께서 이루신 구원을 우리 각 사람에게 적용하시는 분이 성령 하나님입니다.
성령은 진리의 말씀인 복음을 듣게 하시고, 믿게 하시어 우리에게 구원의 도장을 찍어 주십니다.
그래서 바울은 이것을 약속의 성령으로 인치심을 받았다(13)고 말한 것입니다. 성령 하나님은 우리의 구원의 보증이 되어 주시고, 그가 얻으신 우리, 곧 성도들을 속량(구원)하십니다(14).
이처럼 우리의 구원은 성삼위일체 하나님의 긴밀한 연합 사역의 결정체입니다.
그냥 막 주신 것이 아니라 치밀하게 계획되어지고, 처절하게 희생하시고, 끝까지 돌보심으로 우리에게 주어진 은혜인 것입니다. 이렇게 하신 이유는 하나님의 영광과 그 사랑을 찬송하게 하려 하심입니다(14).
Holy Spirit, Sealing Salvation (vv. 13-14):
The salvation planned by the Father and accomplished by the Son is applied to us by the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit allows us to hear and believe the gospel, sealing us with the promise of salvation. Thus, Paul refers to Him as the promised Holy Spirit, the guarantee of our salvation until its completion (v. 14).
Our salvation epitomizes the Triune God's collaborative work, a grace intricately planned, sacrificially given, and continuously nurtured for His glory and love (v. 14).
오늘 본문에서 계속적으로 반복하여 나오는 문장이 있습니다. 그리스도 예수 안에서(1), 그리스도 안에서(3, 4, 7, 9, 10, 12), 그가 사랑하시는 자 안에서(6), 그 안에서(11, 13)입니다.
우리말로는 10회이지만, 헬라어로는 19번이나 등장합니다.
그렇습니다! 구원은 오직 예수 안에서만 받을 수 있는 은혜입니다.
한편 바울은 자신의 모든 서신서에서 명사인 사랑(아가페) 또는 동사인 사랑하다(아가파오)를 총 107회 사용했습니다. 그런데 에베소서에만 사랑/사랑하다 라는 단어가 19회 등장합니다. 전체 1/6이 넘는 숫자입니다.
결국 에베소서에 가장 많이 등장하는 단어들을 합쳐보니, 예수와 사랑입니다.
하나님이 우리를 구원하신 근본적인 원인은 사랑입니다. 그리고 우리를 구원하신 분이 예수입니다.
오늘 하루 예수 사랑을 깊이 묵상하고, 감격하며, 찬송으로 하나님께 영광 돌리는 하루 되기를 바랍니다.
In this epistle, there is a phrase that is being repeated over and over again. In Christ Jesus (1), in Christ (3,4,7,9,10,12), in the One He loves (6), In him (11,13)
It appears 10 times in our translation but 19 times in the original Greek.
That is right! Salvation is found only "in Christ".
Furthermore, the term "love" or “loves” appears 107 times in Paul’s epistles. And in the book of Ephesians alone, love/loves appear 19 times. That is accounting for nearly one-sixth of its total occurrences in all of Paul's letters.
The core message of Ephesians revolves around Jesus and love.
The foundational reason for our salvation is God's love, and the one through whom it is accomplished is Jesus.
Today, let us deeply meditate on the love of Jesus, be moved by it, and give glory to God through our praises.
