11:1 믿음은 바라는 것들의 실상이요 보지 못하는 것들의 증언니
1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
11:2 선진들이 이로써 증거를 얻었으니라
2 This is what the ancients were commended for.
11:3 믿음으로 모든 세계가 하나님의 말씀으로 지어진 줄을 우리가 아나니 보이는 것은 나타난 것으로 말미암아 된 것이 아니니라
3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
11:4 믿음으로 아벨은 가인보다 더 나은 제사를 하나님께 드림으로 의로운 자라 하시는 증거를 얻었으니 하나님이 그 예물에 대하여 증언하심이라 그가 죽었으나 그 믿음으로써 지금도 말하느니라
4 By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.
11:5 믿음으로 에녹은 죽음을 보지 않고 옮겨졌으니 하나님이 그를 옮기심으로 다시 보이지 아니하였느니라 그는 옮겨지기 전에 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 자라 하는 증거를 받았느니라
5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.
11:6 믿음이 없이는 하나님을 기쁘시게 하지 못하나니 하나님께 나아가는 자는 반드시 그가 계신 것과 또한 그가 자기를 찾는 자들에게 상 주시는 이심을 믿어야 할지니라
6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
11:7 믿음으로 노아는 아직 보이지 않는 일에 경고하심을 받아 경외함으로 방주를 준비하여 그 집을 구원하였으니 이로 말미암아 세상을 정죄하고 믿음을 따르는 의의 상속자가 되었느니라
7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.
Peter Boghossian라는 분이 게십니다. 미국의 철학자이자 잘 알려진 무신론자입니다. 그는 "무신론자 만들기 메뉴얼"이라는 책을 썼습니다. 이 책에서 그가 한 인용구 중 하나는 다음과 같습니다. "믿음의 정의: 알지 못하는 것을 안다고 가장하다." 이것이 사실일까요? 우리의 믿음은 우리가 모르는 것을 기반으로 하고 있을까요? 이 해석은 이분의 믿음의 해석이지 성경적 해석은 아닙니다. 요한복음 20:30-31에는 "예수께서 제자들 앞에서 다른 표적도 행하셨으니 이 표적들은 이 책에 기록되지 아니하였고, 이것들은 기록되었는데 너희로 예수가 그리스도이신 줄 믿게 하고 또 믿음으로 말미암아 너희에게 생명이 있게 하려 함이라"라고 기록되어 있습니다. 이 성경책의 4복음서와 성경에 기록된 예수님의 모든 기적들은 우리가 믿을 수 있게 도와주는 진짜로 일어난 일들 입니다.
There is a man by the name of Peter Boghossian. He is an American philosopher and a well-known atheist. He wrote a book called, “A Manual for Creating Atheists”. One of his quotes in the book is as follows: “Definition of Faith: Pretending to know things you don’t know.” Is this true? Is our faith based on something that we don’t know? This definition is HIS definition of faith but not a biblical definition. In John 20:30-31, it is written “Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” Jesus’ miracles that are recorded in the Bible, the 4 synoptic Gospels were written to provide us evidence so that we may believe.
오늘의 성경 구절에서는 히브리서의 저자가 믿음에 대해 쓰고 있습니다. 실제로 히브리서의 책 전체에서 믿음이 언급되지만 특히 이 장에서 강조되고 있습니다. "믿음"이라는 단어는 이 책에서 31번 나오지만 그 중 24번은 11장에 나오고 있습니다. 그래서 오늘의 묵상을 통해 하나님이 우리에게 어떤 믿음에 대해 알려주시려 하는지 알아보겠습니다.
1절은 믿음의 정의를 알려주고 있습니다. "믿음은 바라는 것들의 실상이요 보이지 않는 것들의 증거니." 하지만 우리가 절 1로 들어가기 전에, 저자가 우리에게 제공한 믿음의 예시를 먼저 살펴보겠습니다.
In today’s scriptures, the author of Hebrews writes about faith. Faith is actually mentioned throughout the Book of Hebrews but it is highlighted in this chapter. The word “faith” appears 31 times in this book but 24 of them is in chapter 11. So through today’s devotional, let us see what God wants us to know about faith.
Verse 1 tells us the definition of what faith is. Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
But before we dive into verse 1. I would like us to first look at the examples of faith that the author gave us.
믿음의 영웅들
믿음으로 아벨은 가인보다 더 나은 제사를 하나님께 드림으로 의로운 자라 하시는 증거를 얻었으니 하나님이 그 예물에 대하여 증언하심이라 그가 죽었으나 그 믿음으로써 지금도 말하느니라(4)
아벨은 아담과 하와의 둘째 아들이었고 가인의 동생 이였습니다. 아벨과 가인 모두 하나님께 제물을 드렸습니다. 가인은 땅의 과실 중 일부를 제물로 들였지만 아벨은 그의 양 떼에서 태어난 초생들의 기름진 부분을 가져왔습니다. 하나님은 아벨의 제물만 받아들이셨고 가인은 화를 내어 아벨을 죽였습니다. 아벨은 가인이 자기를 시기하고 죽일 것을 알았을까요? 아마도 그렇지 않았을 것입니다. 그러나 아벨은 하나님께 최선을 바쳤습니다.
The Heroes of faith
By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.(4)
Abel was the second son of Adam and Eve and the younger brother of Cain. Both Abel and Cain brought sacrifices to God. Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering, but Abel brought the fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. God only accepted Abel’s and Cain got mad and killed Abel. Did Abel know Cain was gonna be jealous and kill him. Probably not. But Abel did the right thing by giving God his best.
믿음으로 에녹은 죽음을 보지 않고 옮겨졌으니 하나님이 그를 옮기심으로 다시 보이지 아니하였느니라 그는 옮겨지기 전에 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 자라 하는 증거를 받았느니라(5)
에녹의 이야기는 아벨의 이야기와 완전히 다릅니다. 아벨은 이 땅에서 일어날 수 있는 가장 최악의 일인 육체적인 죽음을 경험했지만 에녹은 결코 죽지 않았습니다. 창세기 5장에서 아담에서 노아까지의 계보를 볼 수 있는데요 여기서 에녹이 365년을 살았다고 나와 있으며 창세기 5:24에서 "에녹이 하나님과 동행하더니 하나님이 그를 데려가시므로 세상에 있지 아니하였더라"라고 기록되어 있습니다. 하나님은 에녹을 천국으로 데려가셨습니다. 구약에서 하나님에 의해 "데려가신" 유일한 다른 사람은 엘리야 선지자 입니다. 열왕기하 2:1-14에서 엘리야는 그의 제자 엘리사가 지켜보는 가운데 불타는 병거에 올라 천국으로 데려가셨습니다. 엘리야는 구약의 주요 선지자 중 하나입니다. 에녹은 엘리야만큼 잘 기억되지 않을 수 있습니다. 학자들은 에녹이 하나님을 얼마나 사랑하고 따랐으면 이렇게 천국으로 바로 대려가셨을까 생각합니다.
By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. (5)
The story of Enoch is completely different from the story of Abel. While Abel experienced the worst possible thing that could happen on earth which was physical death, Enoch never had to die at all. In Genesis chapter 5, we see the genealogy from Adam to Noah. And it says Enoch lived 365 years and in Genesis 5:24: “Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.” God took him to heaven. And there is only one other person in the Old Testament who had this honor of being “taken”. That is Prophet Elijah. In 2 Kings 2:1-14, Elijah was taken up to heaven in a fiery chariot with his student Elisha watching. Elijah is one of the major prophets in the Old Testament. Enoch may not be remembered as well as Elijah but the fact that there were taken to heaven by God is evidence of how closely he followed God.
믿음으로 노아는 아직 보이지 않는 일에 경고하심을 받아 경외함으로 방주를 준비하여 그 집을 구원하였으니 이로 말미암아 세상을 정죄하고 믿음을 따르는 의의 상속자가 되었느니라. (7)
하나님은 노아에게 홍수를 예고하고 방주를 만들라고 말씀하셨습니다. 노아가 해야 할 일은 하나님의 명령을 따르는 것 뿐이었습니다. 아마 노아는 홍수가 무엇인지도 알지 못했을 것입니다. 홍수가 올 이유나 증거가 없었지만 노아는 하나님을 신뢰하기로 선택했습니다.
By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith. (7)
God warned Noah about the flood and told him to make an ark. All Noah had to do was obey and he did. Noah probably didn’t even know what a flood was. There was no proof that a flood was incoming but Noah chose to trust God.
이제 1절로 돌아가 믿음이란 무엇인지 다시 보겠습니다. "믿음은 바라는 것들의 실상이요 보이지 않는 것들의 증거니."
아벨, 에녹, 노아 사이에 공통점이 있습니다. 그들은 순수하게 아무것도 모르고 하나님을 그냥 따른 것이 아닙니다. 그들은 개인적인 간증을 바탕으로 하나님이 약속대로 행하리라고 확신하고 행동했습니다. 그들은 하나님의 뜻을 따르며 행동했습니다.
"바라는 것들의 실상이요"이란 무엇을 의미할까요? NIV 성경에서는 Confidence in what we hope for로 번역되어 있는데요 이 소망 (hope)은 단순히 어떤 일이 일어나기를 바라는 것이 아닙니다. 이것은 하나님이 신실하게 행하리라는 확신과 신뢰를 가지고 기다리는 것입니다. 시편 5:3에서는 "여호와여 아침에 주께서 나의 소리를 들으시리니 아침에 내가 주께 기도하고 바라리이다"라고 기록 되어 있습니다. 이것이 희망입니다. 기도하고 하나님이 기도에 대답하리라고 기대하는 것입니다.
그렇다면 "보이지 않는 것들의 증거니"은 무엇을 의미할까요? 때로는 우리는 인간적 눈으로 보지 못할 수 있지만 하나님이 그의 약속을 이루리라고 기대하는 것입니다..
Let’s go back to verse 1: Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
There is a common theme between Abel, Enoch, and Noah. They were not just naively accepting some fairy tale ending. They were acting in confidence that God would do as He promised, based on their personal experiences. They followed after God’s heart.
What does this Confidence in what we hope for mean. This hope is not just talking about you wishing something to happen. It is to wait for something with assurance and confidence, knowing that God will be faithful. In Psalm 5:3 it says, In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before youand wait expectantly.
This is what hope is. You pray. And you expect God to answer your prayer.
What does the second part Assurance about what we do not see mean? Sometimes we might not be able to see with our human eyes but we are still expecting God to fulfill His promise.
예를 들어, 갑작스럽게 병원에 가야 해서 입원비가 천불 입니다. 은행 계좌에 십만불이 있다면 천불은 거의 아무것도 아니겠죠. 병원 비를 내는 것에 크게 믿음이 필요하지 않을 것입니다.
또는 하나님이 이미 잘 하는 일을 하라고 하실 때는 어떻게 될까요?
예를 들어, 제가 전화기를 팔고 있었을 때 하나님이 다른 장소에서 전화기를 팔라고 하셨다면 어떨까요. 이것도 크게 믿음이 필요하지 않을 것입니다. 이미 그 일을 어떻게 하는지 알고 있기 때문입니다. 하지만 하나님이 여러분들이 정말로 어떻게 해야 할지 모르는 일을 하라고 부르시는 경우 어떨까요? 예를 들어, 6년 전에 사역에 들어왔을 때 저는 이 일을 할 수 없다는 것을 빨리 알게 되었습니다. 사역하기 바로 전에는 저는 주간 거의 60시간을 일하고 잘 시간조차 부족했습니다. 그 사역의 첫 해 동안 나는 아주 무능한 사람이구나 라고 많이 느꼈어요. 그런데 지금까지도 사역을 하고 있습니다. 1년 반 전에 저는 모든 일을 그만두고 사역에 집중하기로 결심했습니다. 하나님은 아직 저의 가정을 homeless로 만들지 않으셨어요. 입을 옷과 먹을 수 있는 음식도 있습니다. 우리가 우리의 눈으로 뭐가 보이지 않더라도 하나님의 약속을 위해서 기도하고 기대하는 우리가 되길 바랍니다.
For example, let’s say I had to suddenly go to the hospital and my hospital bill was $1,000. If I had $100,000 in my bank account, $1,000 would be almost nothing. It wouldn’t take me much faith to pay that hospital bill.
Or what if God asks you to do something that you already know?
For example, let’s say I used to sell phones but God told me to sell phones at a different place. This wouldn’t take much faith either because you already know how to do it. But what if God calls you do something that you don’t really know how to do. For example, when I came into ministry 6 years ago, I quickly noticed that this was something that I couldn’t do. During this time, I was working almost 60 hours a week and I didn’t even have time to sleep that much. During that first year in ministry, I thought to myself how incapable of a person I was. But I’m still doing ministry to this day. About a year and a half ago, I quit all my side jobs and focused on ministry. God still haven’t made me homeless. I still have clothes to wear and food to eat. Although we don’t see it physically, I hope and pray that we will have faith that God will fulfill his promises.
믿음이란 어려움을 겪을 때 하나님이 당신을 도우러 올 것을 기대하는 것입니다. 때로는 물리적으로 보이지 않을 수 있지만 하나님의 놀라운 능력을 믿는 것입니다. 믿음은 하나님께 대한 반응입니다. 때로는 우리가 보지 못할 수 있지만, 우리는 항상 믿음으로 살며 하나님에게 반응하는 교회가 되기를 소망합니다.
Faith is about expecting God to come through for you during your hardship. Although you do not see it physically, you are believing in the amazing power of God. Faith is about responding to God. Although sometimes, we will not be able to physically see it, I hope that we will be a church that will be active in faith and always responding to God.
