26:1 아그립바가 바울에게 이르되 너를 위하여 말하기를 네게 허락하노라 하니 이에 바울이 손을 들어 변명하되
1 Then Agrippa said to Paul, “You have permission to speak for yourself.”
So Paul motioned with his hand and began his defense:
26:2 아그립바 왕이여 유대인이 고발하는 모든 일을 오늘 당신 앞에서 변명하게 된 것을 다행히 여기나이다
2 “King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to stand before you today as I make my defense against all the accusations of the Jews,
26:3 특히 당신이 유대인의 모든 풍속과 문제를 아심이니이다 그러므로 내 말을 너그러이 들으시기를 바라나이다
3 and especially so because you are well acquainted with all the Jewish customs and controversies. Therefore, I beg you to listen to me patiently.
26:4 내가 처음부터 내 민족과 더불어 예루살렘에서 젊었을 때 생활한 상황을 유대인이 다 아는 바라
4 “The Jewish people all know the way I have lived ever since I was a child, from the beginning of my life in my own country, and also in Jerusalem.
26:5 일찍부터 나를 알았으니 그들이 증언하려 하면 내가 우리 종교의 가장 엄한 파를 따라 바리새인의 생활을 하였다고 할 것이라
5 They have known me for a long time and can testify, if they are willing, that I conformed to the strictest sect of our religion, living as a Pharisee.
26:6 이제도 여기 서서 심문 받는 것은 하나님이 우리 조상에게 약속하신 것을 바라는 까닭이니
6 And now it is because of my hope in what God has promised our ancestors that I am on trial today.
26:7 이 약속은 우리 열두 지파가 밤낮으로 간절히 하나님을 받들어 섬김으로 얻기를 바라는 바인데 아그립바 왕이여 이 소망으로 말미암아 내가 유대인들에게 고소를 당하는 것이니이다
7 This is the promise our twelve tribes are hoping to see fulfilled as they earnestly serve God day and night. King Agrippa, it is because of this hope that these Jews are accusing me.
26:8 당신들은 하나님이 죽은 사람을 다시 살리심을 어찌하여 못 믿을 것으로 여기나이까
8 Why should any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead?
26:9 나도 나사렛 예수의 이름을 대적하여 많은 일을 행하여야 될 줄 스스로 생각하고
9 “I too was convinced that I ought to do all that was possible to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
26:10 예루살렘에서 이런 일을 행하여 대제사장들에게서 권한을 받아 가지고 많은 성도를 옥에 가두며 또 죽일 때에 내가 찬성 투표를 하였고
10 And that is just what I did in Jerusalem. On the authority of the chief priests I put many of the Lord’s people in prison, and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.
26:11 또 모든 회당에서 여러 번 형벌하여 강제로 모독하는 말을 하게 하고 그들에 대하여 심히 격분하여 외국 성에까지 가서 박해하였고
11 Many a time I went from one synagogue to another to have them punished, and I tried to force them to blaspheme. I was so obsessed with persecuting them that I even hunted them down in foreign cities.
26:12 그 일로 대제사장들의 권한과 위임을 받고 다메섹으로 갔나이다
12 “On one of these journeys I was going to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests.
아그립바2세를 불러 풀기 어려운 문제를 넘기는 모습을 보면 베스도가 지혜로워 보이기까지 합니다.
하지만 이것은 가난하고 소외된 자들 뿐 아니라 왕이나 귀인들에게도 자연스럽게 복음을 접하게 만드시는 공평하신 하나님의 지혜입니다. 복음이 필요 없는 사람은 아무도 없습니다.
누가는 사도행전에서 사도 바울의 회심 이야기를 세번 기록합니다.
9장에서 회심 사건을 다루면서 누가가 보고하는 형식으로,
22:5-16절에서 성난 유대 군중에게 바울이 직접,
그리고 오늘 본문인 26:12-18절에서 아그립바2세에게 전하는 장면으로.
왜 누가는 같은 이야기를 세번이나 반복하여 기록하고 있을까요?
헨첸Haenchen이라는 학자는 다음과 같이 말합니다.
누가는 그가 어떤 것을 엄청나게 중요하다고 생각하고
그것을 독자들이 잊을 수 없도록 깊이 각인시키고자 할 때에만 그런 반복을 사용했다.
맞는 말입니다. 사도 바울의 회심과 부르심이라는 주제의 중요성 때문임을 부인할 수 없습니다.
하지만 존 스토트는 헨첸의 말을 인정하면서도 세 기사들 간의 차이점에 대한 의문을 제기합니다.
본문의 사도 바울의 변명, 간증, 설교는 다른 것에 비해서 그 전에 본인이 행하던 일의 허무함과(14)
그리고 그에게 주어진 사명에 대해서 더욱 강조한다는 차이점이 있습니다.
아울러 바울은 자연스럽게 예수가 본인에게 어떠한 분이신지를 간증하는 설교를 합니다.
Festus seems wise when he called for King Agrippa II to solve this tough problem.
The sight of Apostle Paul's encounter with King Agrippa II, where Paul handles difficult questions adeptly, can make Festus seem wise. However, this is the fairness of God’s wisdom that allows not only the poor and outcasts but also kings and nobles to naturally come into contact with the Gospel. There is no one who does not need the Gospel.
In the Book of Acts, Luke records the conversion story of Apostle Paul three times.
In Chapter 9, in the account of the conversion incident, Luke adopts a reporting style.
In 22:5-16, Paul directly addresses the enraged Jewish crowd.
In today’s scriptures 26:12-18, Paul gives his story while talking with King Agrippa II.
Why does Luke repeat the same story three times in his writing?
Scholar Haenchen says the following:
"Luke used such repetition only when he considered something to be extremely important and wanted to deeply impress it upon the readers' minds, ensuring they wouldn't forget."
That's correct. The significance of the theme of Apostle Paul's conversion and calling cannot be denied. However, John Stott acknowledges Haenchen's statement while also raising questions about the differences between the three accounts.
In the present passage, Apostle Paul's defense, testimony, and preaching stand out in comparison to other aspects by emphasizing the futility of his previous actions (verse 14) and highlighting his mission. Additionally, Paul naturally delivers a sermon that attests to who Jesus is in relation to him.
스토리가 스펙을 이긴다
사도는 아그립바2세 앞에서 청문회를 합니다. 이 구도는 헤롯 가문과 복음의 인연(?)을 보여줍니다.
그들 일가의 창시자인 헤롯 대제는 아기 예수를 죽이려 했다.
그의 아들이며 갈릴리의 분봉왕이었던 헤롯 안디바는 세례 요한의 목을 베어 죽였으며,
주님으로부터 ‘여우’라는 호칭을 얻었다.
그의 손자 아그립바 1세는 세베대의 아들 야고보를 칼로 죽였다.
이제 우리는 바울이 아그립바의 아들 앞에 불려 나온 것을 보고 있다.

이 정도면 원수 가문이라고 할 수 있을 것입니다. 잘못하면 바울도 죽을 수 있다는 위기감이 있습니다. 그러나 바울은 전혀 굴하지 않고 담대하게 헤롯 가문의 마지막 사람 아그립바2세에게 복음을 전합니다.
그의 변호는 세 파트로 나눠 볼 수 있습니다.
먼저 자신이 바리새파로 자라난 배경을 설명합니다(4~8).
바리새인들은 사두개인들과 달리 부활을 믿었으며, 율법에 매우 엄격했습니다.
헤롯 왕가는 사두개인들과 연관이 있는 정치적인 그룹입니다. 사두개인들은 영적인 존재나 부활을 믿지 않았습니다. 그래서 바울은 다음과 같은 핵심적인 질문을 합니다.
당신들은 하나님이 죽은 사람을 살리심을 어찌하여 못 믿을 것으로 여기나이까(8).
둘째로 자신 역시 예수를 만나기 전에 기독교를 박해했던 일에 대해서 말합니다(9~12).
바울은 나사렛 예수를 대적하여 믿는 자들을 박해하고 심지어 잡아 죽이는 일에 가장 앞장선 자였습니다. 심지어 대제사장들에게 권세를 얻어 외국의 성까지 믿는 자들을 잡으러 다녔을 정도입니다.
마지막으로 내일 본문에서는 예수를 만난 다메섹 사건과 자신의 사명에 대해서 말합니다(13~18).

Story Trumps Qualifications
The Apostle conducts a hearing before King Agrippa II. This setting showcases the connection between the Herod family and the Gospel.
Herod the Great, the founder of their dynasty, sought to kill the baby Jesus.
His son, Herod Antipas, who ruled over Galilee, had John the Baptist beheaded and gained the epithet "fox" from the Lord.
His grandson, Agrippa I, killed James, the son of Zebedee, with a sword.
Now we are witnessing Paul's appearance before Agrippa's son.

At this point, it can be seen as a hostile family lineage. There's a sense of impending danger for Paul as he could potentially meet his demise. However, Paul remains undeterred and boldly proclaims the Gospel to Agrippa II, the last member of the Herod family.
His defense can be divided into three parts. Firstly, he explains his background of being raised as a Pharisee (4-8). The Pharisees believed in resurrection, unlike the Sadducees, and they strictly adhered to the law. The Herodian family was associated with the Sadducees, who didn't believe in spiritual existence or resurrection. Therefore, Paul poses a crucial question: "Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead?" (8).
Secondly, he talks about his own history of persecuting Christianity before encountering Jesus (9-12). Paul was a leading figure in opposing the followers of Jesus, even persecuting, and killing those who believed in the Nazarene. He went so far as to gain authority from the chief priests to capture believers, even in foreign cities.
Lastly, in the upcoming passage, he will speak about his encounter with Jesus in the Damascus event and his mission (13-18). We will dive into this part tomorrow.
바울은 아그립바2세에게 논리적인 설명으로 복음을 전하지 않았습니다. 다만 자신의 이야기를 들려주었습니다. 사람들은 논리적인 설명보다, 어떤 사람의 이야기에 더욱 큰 흥미를 느낍니다.
한국에서 2010년 출판한 스토리가 스펙을 이긴다 라는 책에서 김정태 작가는 다음과 같이 말합니다.
상대에게 신뢰를 주는 가장 빠른 길은 개인의 역사를 보여주는 것이다.
그 역사는 바로 그의 스펙이 아니라, 그의 이야기다.
왜냐하면 스토리에는 힘과 감동, 그리고 나만의 이야기, 곧 차별화가 있기 때문입니다.
바울은 자신의 삶의 이야기를 통하여 자신이 죽기까지 고집을 필수밖에 없는 이유를 설명하고 있습니다.
자신이 직접 겪은 일이고, 자신이 그렇게 믿던 바 부활의 주인이 예수라는 사실을 깨달은 것입니다.
신앙은 이처럼 예수님과 나의 사랑 이야기를 만들어 가는 과정입니다. 나만의 연애이야기가 있습니까?
Paul did not present the Gospel to Agrippa II through logical explanations; instead, he shared his own story. People often find more interest in someone's personal story than in logical explanations. In the book "Story Trumps qualifications," published in Korea in 2010, author Jung-Tae Kim states the following:
"The quickest way to gain trust from someone is to show them your personal history. That history is not their personal qualifications but their story."
This is because stories contain power, emotion, and uniqueness, which leads to differentiation. Through his own life story, Paul explains the reason for his unwavering commitment, even to the point of death. It's an account of what he personally experienced and how he came to realize that the Master of Resurrection he believed in was Jesus. Faith is a process of creating a love story between oneself and Jesus. Do you have your own love story?
그 스토리(복음)를 전하는 일
사도 바울의 그 사랑 이야기가 무엇입니까?
그것은 구약의 수많은 선지자들이 목숨을 바친 이야기이며, 모세의 사랑 이야기이기도 합니다.
그래서 그는 아그립바에게 자신이 전한 것은 오직 모세가 말한 것 밖에는 없음을 피력합니다(22).
그것이 무엇입니까? 바로 복음입니다.
그러므로 그 사랑 이야기를 경험한 우리는 그 좋은 소식을 전하는 메신저가 되어야 합니다.
많은 사람들이 가십과 나쁜 소식을 전하는 것에 익숙합니다. 하지만 선지자는 다음과 같이 말했습니다.
좋은 소식을 전하며 평화를 공포하며 복된 좋은 소식을 가져오며 구원을 공포하며 시온을 향하여 이르기를 네 하나님이 통치하신다 하는 자의 산을 넘는 발이 어찌 그리 아름다운가 (사 52:7)
사도는 무엇 때문에 죽기까지 그 고집을 꺾지 않았습니까? 바로 복음 때문입니다.
그리고 그 복음은 바울과 예수님의 사랑 이야기입니다.
우리는 내 자신은 물론, 타인이 부정할 수 없는, 부인할 수 없는 진정한 사랑의 이야기를 만들어야 합니다.
날마다 사랑하는 예수님과 스토리를 만들어 가는 성도 되기를 바랍니다.
오늘 하루도 기쁨의 소식을 만나는 모든 사람들에게 전하기를 소원합니다.
The work of spreading the Gospel
What is the love story (Gospel) that Apostle Paul is proclaiming? His love story is the story of countless prophets who sacrificed their lives, and it's also the story of Moses. Therefore, he emphasizes to Agrippa that what he has been proclaiming is nothing but what Moses spoke about (verse 22). And what is that? It's the Gospel.
So, what is this love story? It's the Gospel. As people who have experienced this love story, we should become messengers to share this good news. Many people are familiar with spreading gossip and bad news. However, the prophet said the following:
How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!”
Why did the Apostle not waver in his determination even unto death? It's because of the Gospel. And that Gospel is the love story of Paul and Jesus. We should create a story of true love that cannot be denied or refuted, not only for ourselves but for others as well.
Every day, may we become believers who build a story of love with Jesus, a story that cannot be denied by anyone. I hope that today, you are able to share the message of joy with everyone you meet.
