23:12 날이 새매 유대인들이 당을 지어 맹세하되 바울을 죽이기 전에는 먹지도 아니하고 마시지도 아니하겠다 하고
12 The next morning some Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.
23:13 이같이 동맹한 자가 사십여 명이더라
13 More than forty men were involved in this plot.
23:14 대제사장들과 장로들에게 가서 말하되 우리가 바울을 죽이기 전에는 아무 것도 먹지 않기로 굳게 맹세하였으니
14 They went to the chief priests and the elders and said, “We have taken a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul.
23:15 이제 너희는 그의 사실을 더 자세히 물어보려는 척하면서 공회와 함께 천부장에게 청하여 바울을 너희에게로 데리고 내려오게 하라 우리는 그가 가까이 오기 전에 죽이기로 준비하였노라 하더니
15 Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him before you on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about his case. We are ready to kill him before he gets here.”
23:16 바울의 생질이 그들이 매복하여 있다 함을 듣고 와서 영내에 들어가 바울에게 알린지라
16 But when the son of Paul’s sister heard of this plot, he went into the barracks and told Paul.
23:17 바울이 한 백부장을 청하여 이르되 이 청년을 천부장에게로 인도하라 그에게 무슨 할 말이 있다 하니
17 Then Paul called one of the centurions and said, “Take this young man to the commander; he has something to tell him.”
23:18 천부장에게로 데리고 가서 이르되 죄수 바울이 나를 불러 이 청년이 당신께 할 말이 있다 하여 데리고 가기를 청하더이다 하매
18 So he took him to the commander.
The centurion said, “Paul, the prisoner, sent for me and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you.”
23:19 천부장이 그의 손을 잡고 물러가서 조용히 묻되 내게 할 말이 무엇이냐
19 The commander took the young man by the hand, drew him aside and asked, “What is it you want to tell me?”
23:20 대답하되 유대인들이 공모하기를 그들이 바울에 대하여 더 자세한 것을 묻기 위함이라 하고 내일 그를 데리고 공회로 내려오기를 당신께 청하자 하였으니
20 He said: “Some Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul before the Sanhedrin tomorrow on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about him.
23:21 당신은 그들의 청함을 따르지 마옵소서 그들 중에서 바울을 죽이기 전에는 먹지도 않고 마시지도 않기로 맹세한 자 사십여 명이 그를 죽이려고 숨어서 지금 다 준비하고 당신의 허락만 기다리나이다 하니
21 Don’t give in to them, because more than forty of them are waiting in ambush for him. They have taken an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him. They are ready now, waiting for your consent to their request.”
23:22 이에 천부장이 청년을 보내며 경계하되 이 일을 내게 알렸다고 아무에게도 이르지 말라 하고
22 The commander dismissed the young man with this warning: “Don’t tell anyone that you have reported this to me.”
23:23 백부장 둘을 불러 이르되 밤 제 삼 시에 가이사랴까지 갈 보병 이백 명과 기병 칠십 명과 창병 이백 명을 준비하라 하고
23 Then he called two of his centurions and ordered them, “Get ready a detachment of two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea at nine tonight.
23:24 또 바울을 태워 총독 벨릭스에게로 무사히 보내기 위하여 짐승을 준비하라 명하며
24 Provide horses for Paul so that he may be taken safely to Governor Felix.”
23:25 또 이 아래와 같이 편지하니 일렀으되
25 He wrote a letter as follows:
23:26 글라우디오 루시아는 총독 벨릭스 각하께 문안하나이다
26 Claudius Lysias,
To His Excellency, Governor Felix:
Greetings.
23:27 이 사람이 유대인들에게 잡혀 죽게 된 것을 내가 로마 사람인 줄 들어 알고 군대를 거느리고 가서 구원하여다가
27 This man was seized by the Jews and they were about to kill him, but I came with my troops and rescued him, for I had learned that he is a Roman citizen.
23:28 유대인들이 무슨 일로 그를 고발하는지 알고자 하여 그들의 공회로 데리고 내려갔더니
28 I wanted to know why they were accusing him, so I brought him to their Sanhedrin.
23:29 고발하는 것이 그들의 율법 문제에 관한 것 뿐이요 한 가지도 죽이거나 결박할 사유가 없음을 발견하였나이다
29 I found that the accusation had to do with questions about their law, but there was no charge against him that deserved death or imprisonment.
23:30 그러나 이 사람을 해하려는 간계가 있다고 누가 내게 알려 주기로 곧 당신께로 보내며 또 고발하는 사람들도 당신 앞에서 그에 대하여 말하라 하였나이다 하였더라
30 When I was informed of a plot to be carried out against the man, I sent him to you at once. I also ordered his accusers to present to you their case against him.
23:31 보병이 명을 받은 대로 밤에 바울을 데리고 안디바드리에 이르러
31 So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul with them during the night and brought him as far as Antipatris.
23:32 이튿날 기병으로 바울을 호송하게 하고 영내로 돌아가니라
32 The next day they let the cavalry go on with him, while they returned to the barracks.
23:33 그들이 가이사랴에 들어가서 편지를 총독에게 드리고 바울을 그 앞에 세우니
33 When the cavalry arrived in Caesarea, they delivered the letter to the governor and handed Paul over to him.
23:34 총독이 읽고 바울더러 어느 영지(領地) 사람이냐 물어 길리기아 사람인 줄 알고
34 The governor read the letter and asked what province he was from. Learning that he was from Cilicia,
23:35 이르되 너를 고발하는 사람들이 오거든 네 말을 들으리라 하고 헤롯 궁에 그를 지키라 명하니라
35 he said, “I will hear your case when your accusers get here.” Then he ordered that Paul be kept under guard in Herod’s palace.
바울은 다시 한 번 표적이 되었습니다. 바울과 예수님의 시대에는 로마인과 그들의 지지자들을 겨냥한 유대인들의 비밀 암살자 조직이 있었습니다. 그들은 단검을 가리키는 '단검 사나이Dagger-Man(원어로는 시카리Sicarii - סיקרים)로 불리며 종종 단검을 감추고 로마 병사들이 지나가는 동안 그들을 찔렀습니다. 그들은 그토록 헌신적이었기에 바울을 죽일 때까지는 음식을 먹지 않겠다고 말했습니다. 그래서 암살자들은 공회에게 그들이 ‘바울과 한 번 더 만나길 원한다’는 거짓말을 하기를 원했습니다. 그리고 그 후에 바울을 기습하기를 원했습니다. 바울의 여동생의 아들(조카)은 그들의 이러한 계획을 알게 되었습니다. 오늘 성경 본문에서는 바울의 조카를 청년으로 표현합니다. 이것이 왜 중요한가요? 우리의 나이가 얼마나 많든 적든 하나님이 사용하시는 데에는 아무 상관이 없기 때문입니다. 우리는 너무 훌륭하거나 완벽할 필요가 없습니다. 오늘 본문의 이 청년(바울의 조카)는 심지어 이름도 언급되지 않았지만 아주 중요한 일에 쓰임을 받았습니다. 이와 같이 우리도 하나님의 나라를 위해 순종할 준비만 하면 됩니다.
Paul is targeted once again. In the days of Paul and Jesus, there was a secretive group of Jewish assassins who target the Romans and their supporters. They were called dagger-men, because they often concealed daggers and stabbed Roman soldiers as they walked by. They were so committed that they said that they will not eat until they kill Paul. So, the assassins wanted the
Sanhedrin to lie to the Roman commander, pretending they wanted another meeting with Paul. And then they would ambush Paul. Paul’s sister’s son (nephew) learns of their plan to ambush Paul. Paul’s nephew is labeled as a young man in today’s scriptures. And why is this significant? Because we’re never too old or young for God to use us. We don’t need to be too great or flawless. We don’t even know the nephew’s name. We just need to be obedient to the Kingdom of God.
이 청년이 이 계획을 알게 된 것은 우연이 아닙니다. 11절에서 하나님은 바울이 예루살렘에서 한 것처럼 로마에서도 증언할 것이라고 말했습니다. 하나님은 약속을 이행하시기 위해 바울을 보호하셔야 했습니다.
그래서 이 청년, 바울의 조카는 먼저 바울에게 이 매복 계획을 알렸습니다. 그리고 17절에서 바울은 백부장 중 한 명을 불러 그에게 자신의 조카를 천부장에게 데려가라고 말했습니다. 기억하세요, 이 사람은 바울을 거의 채찍질할 뻔 했던 바로 그 천부장입니다.(행 22:24) 오늘 성경 본문의 후반부에서 이 천부장은 총독 벨릭스에게 자신이 실제로 한 행동을 더 좋아보이도록 포장한 내용으로 편지를 씁니다.(행 23:25-30) 그는 유대인들이 바울를 죽이려 했지만 자신이 그를 구하였다고 썼습니다. 바울이 로마 시민임에도 불구하고 거의 채찍질하려 했던 부분은 생략했습니다. 아마 이 부분은 자신의 평판에 해롭다고 생각되어서 그랬을 것입니다.
This was no coincidence that he found out about the plan. In verse 11, God said that Paul will also testify in Rome just like he did in Jerusalem. God had to protect Paul to fulfill his promise.
So the young man, Paul’s nephew, first goes to Paul to tell of this ambush. Then in verse 17, Paul calls for one of the centurions and tells him to take Paul’s nephew to the commander. Remember that this is the same commander who almost flogged Paul. Later in this passage, the commander writes a letter to Governor Felix and he tries to make himself sound better than he actually acted. He writes that the Jews were about to kill him but that he rescued him. He leaves out the part where he almost flogged Paul, although he is a Roman citizen. Probably, because this would have made him look bad.
이렇게 바울을 거의 채찍질할 뻔했던 천부장이 오늘 본문 23절에서는 200명의 보병, 70명의 기병, 200명의 창병, 총 470명의 병사를 가지고 바울과 함께 보내는 것은 매우 아이러니컬합니다. 학자들은 로마인들이 아마도 당시 예루살렘에 600~1000명의 병사를 주둔시켰던 것으로 추측합니다. 그러니 470명이라는 수는 그들이 가진 전체 병사 규모의 꽤 큰 비율을 차지 하고 있는 것입니다. 이렇게 로마 천부장은 바울을 위해 자신이 위험에 처하는 것도 감수하였습니다. 바울을 거의 죽였던 이 사람이 이제는 그를 돕고 있습니다.
It is very ironic that this same man who almost flogged Paul, in verse 23, gets 200 soldiers, 70 horesemen, 200 spearmen, a total of 470 soldiers to go with Paul. Scholars say that the Romans probably had between 600-1000 soldiers stationed Jerusalem. 470 soldiers is a big percentage of how many soldiers they had. The Roman commander put himself at risk for the sake of Paul. This person who almost killed Paul is now helping him.
우리는 나중에 바울이 탈출하여 총독 벨릭스에게 변론을 펼칠 기회를 갖게 된다는 것을 알고 있습니다.(행24:10~23) 그렇다면 과연 바울을 죽일 때까지 음식을 먹거나 마시지 않겠다고 한 40명의 열심당원들에게는 어떤 일이 일어났을지 궁금해집니다. 그들은 굶주림으로 죽었을까요? 아마도 그렇지 않을 것입니다. 그렇다면 하나님은 왜 이러한 방식으로 역사하고 계신 걸까요?
사도행전 9장 15절을 보면 주님께서 아나니아에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.
“가라 이 사람은 내 이름을 이방인과 임금들과 이스라엘 자손들에게 전하기 위하여 택한 나의 그릇이라”
바울은 이방인과 그들의 임금들에게 복음을 전하려고 이 모든 것을 겪은 것입니다. 결국 바울은 총독 벨릭스에게 그의 간증을 나누었고, 나중에는 가이사에게도 복음을 전할 기회가 있었던 것으로 전해집니다.
Later, we would know that Paul escapes and ends up making his case to Governor Felix . I wonder what happened to the 40 people who said they would not eat or drink until they kill Paul. Did they die of starvation? Probably not. But why is God working in this way?
Acts 9:15 says: But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel.” Paul went through everything to share the gospel with the Gentiles and their kings. Paul eventually shared his testimony with Governor Felix and later on it is assumed that he also had an opportunity ot share the gospel with Caesar.
빌립보서 1:12-13에는 다음과 같이 기록되어 있습니다. “12 형제들아 내가 당한 일이 도리어 복음 전파에 진전이 된 줄을 너희가 알기를 원하노라. 13 이러므로 나의 매임이 그리스도 안에서 모든 시위대 안과 그 밖의 모든 사람에게 나타났으니”
바울은 그의 사역 중 약 5년간 "죄수"로 지냈을 것입니다. 그 중 약 2년 반은 감옥에서 보냈고 나머지는 가택 연금과 경비병의 감시 아래 지냈습니다. 이 모든 수감생활은 하나님의 영광을 위한 것이었습니다. 바울의 고난은 예상치 못한 것이었지만 로마의 고위간부들에게 예수를 전하는 결과를 낳았습니다. 이것이 바울이 하나님이 자신을 사용하길 원하는 방식이었을까요? 어떤 제정신을 가진 사람이 감옥에서 시간을 보내고 싶어하겠습니까? 아무도 없을 것입니다. 그러나 바울은 어떤 상황에서든 하나님의 뜻이 이루어질 것이라고 믿었습니다.
Philippians 1:12-13: 12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.
Paul probably was a “prisoner” for about 5 years during his ministry. About 2 and a half years was spent in a prison cell. The rest was spent under house arrest or being escorted by Roman soldiers. All of this imprisonment was for the glory of God. Paul’s suffering produced unexpected results which was to share Jesus with those in high positions of power. Was this the way Paul wanted God to work in his life? Who in their right mind would want to spend time in jail? No one. But because Paul had faith, no matter what he was going through, he knew that the vision of God would be fulfilled.
저는 체첸으로 단기선교를 가기 전에 준비하던 시절을 기억합니다. 선교 갈 준비를 하는 동안 제 엄마는 제가 그 곳에 가는 것을정말 원치 않으셨습니다. 제가 체첸에 가면 저와 인연을 끊겠다는 말씀도 하셨었습니다. 그렇게 까지 하신 이유는 그 곳이 제가가기에 너무 위험한 곳이라고 생각하셨기 때문입니다. 그래서 저는 엄마에게 마태복음 16장 23절을 말했습니다. 이것이 아들들이 쓸모없는 이유입니다..
“사탄아 내 뒤로 물러 가라 너는 나를 넘어지게 하는 자로다 네가 하나님의 일을 생각하지 아니하고 도리어 사람의 일을 생각하는도다” (마 16:23)
I remember when I was getting ready to go to missions to Chechnya. When I was getting ready to go to missions, my mom really didn’t want me to go. At one point, she said she was going to disown me if I go. Main reason was that she said it was too dangerous for me to go. So I told her Matthew 16:23. This is the reason why sons are useless.
“Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns” (Matthew 16:23)
결국에는, 엄마께서 제가 가는 것을 허락해주시고 준비 비용을 모으는 일도 도와주셨습니다. 그러나 돈을 모금하는 것은 정말 어려웠습니다. 저는 대략 4500불 정도가 필요했습니다. 엄마는 나가는 것은 허락했지만 단 1불도 보태주지 않을 것이라고 하셨습니다. 그래서 저는 엄마한테 한 가지 deal을 했습니다. 만약 제가 엄마의 도움없이 이 큰 금액을 다 모으는 데에 성공하면, 하나님께서 이 선교여행에 있어서 저와 함께 하신다는 것을 알게 되실 거라고 말입니다. 당시에 남은 기간은 약 2주 정도밖에 없었습니다. 저에게는 아무것도 없었습니다. 저를 제외한 저희 선교팀 전체가 이미 비행기 표를 산 상태였습니다. 표 값은 점점 더 비싸지고 있었습니다. 그런데 갑자기 돈이 들어오기 시작했습니다! 할렐루야! 들어오는 돈 중 일부는 제가 알지도 못하는 분들로부터왔습니다. 저의 친구의 친구가 이 선교 여행에 대해 듣고 돈을 보내주기도 한 것입니다. 결국 필요한 모든 비용을 다 모금하여 체첸에 갈 수 있었습니다.
Eventually, my mom agreed to let me go and even helped me raise money. But raising money was so hard. I needed I think around $4500. Although she agreed to let me go, she said she wasn’t even going to give me a dollar. So I had this deal with my mom. If I raise all the money, then she will know that God will be with me There was only about two weeks left. I had nothing. My whole team bought plane tickets except for me. The tickets were getting more and more expensive. But suddenly, money started to come in! Hallelujah! But some of this money was coming from people who I didn’t know. Some of the money was from my friend’s friend who heard that I was going to go on this mission trip. Eventually, I raised all the money necessary and was able to go.
제가 바울만큼의 고난을 겪은 것은 아니지만, 저 기간동안에는 정말 힘들었습니다. 그러나 예상치 못한 사람들의 도움을 통해 복음을 전파할 수 있었습니다. 지난 수요예배의 설교 말씀에서 우리는 하나님께서 우리가 감당 못할 시험은 주시지 않는다는 것을 배웠습니다. 하나님은 광야에 길을 만드시는 분입니다. 또한, 그분께서는 광야에서 우리를 인도하실 것입니다. 우리가 하나님께 헌신하고 그가 우리를 인도하실 것을 이해하고 받아들인다면, 하나님은 당신을 절대로 버리지 않을 것입니다. 하나님은 당신의 손을 잡고 최선의 길로 인도해주실 것입니다.
Although I didn’t suffer like Paul, for me during that time, it was very hard on me. However through unexpected people, I was able to spread the gospel. We heard in Wednesday’s message that God does not give us trials that we cannot endure. God is the one who made the roads in the wilderness. Of course, he’s also going to lead us in the wilderness. When you commit to God and understand that He will lead you, God will never forsake you. God will never abandon you. God will hold your hand and lead you through the best roads.
