22:30 이튿날 천부장은 유대인들이 무슨 일로 그를 고발하는지 진상을 알고자 하여 그 결박을 풀고 명하여 제사장들과 온 공회를 모으고 바울을 데리고 내려가서 그들 앞에 세우니라
30 The commander wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews. So the next day he released him and ordered the chief priests and all the members of the Sanhedrin to assemble. Then he brought Paul and had him stand before them.
23:1 바울이 공회를 주목하여 이르되 여러분 형제들아 오늘날까지 나는 범사에 양심을 따라 하나님을 섬겼노라 하거늘
1 Paul looked straight at the Sanhedrin and said, “My brothers, I have fulfilled my duty to God in all good conscience to this day.”
23:2 대제사장 아나니아가 바울 곁에 서있는 사람들에게 그 입을 치라 명하니
2 At this the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near Paul to strike him on the mouth.
23:3 바울이 이르되 회칠한 담이여 하나님이 너를 치시리로다 네가 나를 율법대로 심판한다고 앉아서 율법을 어기고 나를 치라 하느냐 하니
3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! You sit there to judge me according to the law, yet you yourself violate the law by commanding that I be struck!”
23:4 곁에 선 사람들이 말하되 하나님의 대제사장을 네가 욕하느냐
4 Those who were standing near Paul said, “How dare you insult God’s high priest!”
23:5 바울이 이르되 형제들아 나는 그가 대제사장인 줄 알지 못하였노라 기록하였으되 너의 백성의 관리를 비방하지 말라 하였느니라 하더라
5 Paul replied, “Brothers, I did not realize that he was the high priest; for it is written: ‘Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.’”
23:6 바울이 그 중 일부는 사두개인이요 다른 일부는 바리새인인 줄 알고 공회에서 외쳐 이르되 여러분 형제들아 나는 바리새인이요 또 바리새인의 아들이라 죽은 자의 소망 곧 부활로 말미암아 내가 심문을 받노라
6 Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, “My brothers, I am a Pharisee, descended from Pharisees. I stand on trial because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead.”
23:7 그 말을 한즉 바리새인과 사두개인 사이에 다툼이 생겨 무리가 나누어지니
7 When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.
23:8 이는 사두개인은 부활도 없고 천사도 없고 영도 없다 하고 바리새인은 다 있다 함이라
8 (The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and that there are neither angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees believe all these things.)
23:9 크게 떠들새 바리새인 편에서 몇 서기관이 일어나 다투어 이르되 우리가 이 사람을 보니 악한 것이 없도다 혹 영이나 혹 천사가 그에게 말하였으면 어찌 하겠느냐 하여
9 There was a great uproar, and some of the teachers of the law who were Pharisees stood up and argued vigorously. “We find nothing wrong with this man,” they said. “What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”
23:10 큰 분쟁이 생기니 천부장은 바울이 그들에게 찢겨질까 하여 군인을 명하여 내려가 무리 가운데서 빼앗아 가지고 영내로 들어가라 하니라
10 The dispute became so violent that the commander was afraid Paul would be torn to pieces by them. He ordered the troops to go down and take him away from them by force and bring him into the barracks.
23:11 그 날 밤에 주께서 바울 곁에 서서 이르시되 담대하라 네가 예루살렘에서 나의 일을 증언한 것 같이 로마에서도 증언하여야 하리라 하시니라
11 The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, “Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.”
이 시점에서 로마 천부장은 여전히 유대인들로부터 어떤 고발을 받고 있는지 모르고 있습니다. 천부장은 대제사장들과 온 공회를 모읍니다. 광회가 영어 성경에는 Sanhedrin이라고 기록되어있습니다. 산헤드린이란 단어는 두 개의 헬라어 단어가 결합된 것으로, "함께 앉음"라는 뜻입니다. 공회에는 71명이 있었고 대제사장이 제일 높은 자리에 있었습니다. 그들은 로마 권위 아래에 있으며 사형 처분을 집행할 수 없었습니다. 공회가 예수님을 사형으로 판결한 후에 그를 빌라도에게 보내게 된 이유입니다. 그래서 바울은 자신을 입증할 기회를 공회 앞에서 다시 한 번 얻게 되었습니다.
At this point, the Roman commander still does not know what he is being accused by the Jews. He gathered the chief priests and members of the Sanhedrin together. The word "Sanhedrin" is a combination of two Greek words meaning, "seated together." They were a ruling body of seventy-one members with the High Priest as the chief officer. They were under Roman authority and could not carry out capital punishment. This is why we find them sending Jesus to Pilate after they had condemned Him to death. They acknowledged to Pilate that they did not have the authority to execute anyone. So Paul had another chance to prove himself.
1절에서 바울은 말합니다. "여러분 형제들아 오늘날까지 나는 범사에 양심을 따라 하나님을 섬겼노라 하거늘." 먼저, 그는 자신의 무결성을 확언하려는 의도입니다. 그는 이방인을 성전에 데려오는 것으로 오해 받았고 지금은 로마 군사들에게 붙잡혀 있지만 유대 법을 어긴 적이 없다는 말입니다.
In verse 1 Paul said, “My brothers, I have fulfilled my duty to God in all good conscience to this day.” First, he wants to affirm his integrity. Though he's been accused of bringing a Gentile into the temple and is in Roman custody, that doesn't mean he's broken the Jewish law.
그렇다면 "범사에 양심"이란 무엇일까요? 다른 이들이 보는 것이 내 마음과 일치한다는 것이며, 바울이 자랑스럽게 거기에 서서 말할 수 있는 것입니다. 우리도 우리 자신에게 이 질문을 해 봅시다. 우리에 대해 그렇게 말할 수 있을까요? 지금까지 선한 양심으로 살아온 삶일까요? 다른 사람들이 제 말과 행동을 볼때 예수님이 생각날까요? 아니면 그냥 세상이 생각날까요? 바울에게는 그의 말과 행동, 생각과 믿음은 항상 같은 방향을 가리켰습니다. 범사에 양심으로 살았다면, 우리에게 다른 사람들을 예수님께로 이끌 수있는 능력이 우리가운데 있을 줄 믿습니다.
So, what is having a good conscience? What you see is consistent with my heart, and that’s what Paul could stand there proudly and speak. And I can’t help but ask myself that question. Can that be said of me? Can that be said of you? Have you lived your life in good conscience to this day? When people see the things that I do, does it point them to Jesus? Or do your actions not point to Jesus but to the world? For Paul, his actions, his thoughts, and his belief always pointed to the same direction. If you have lived in good conscience, that means whatever you do, you will point other people to Jesus.
바울이 범사에 양심에 대해 이야기한 후, 2절에서 대제사장 아나니아가 바울의 입을 치라고 명합니다. 이 때 바울은 왜 칠려고 하냐고 묻고 율법대로 심판하라고 외칩니다. 이 부분은 좀 재밌습니다. 바울 옆에 있던 사람들이 그에게 말합니다. "저 사람이 누구인 줄 아세요? 그는 대제사장이라고요!" 그런 다음 바울은 "죄송합니다, 대제사장이신 줄 몰랐어요"라고 말합니다. 아나니아가 대제사장인 줄 바울이 정말 몰랐을까요?
After Paul talks of his good conscience, in verse 2, the high priest Ananias commanded to strike Paul in his mouth. Then Paul started yelling out like why are you trying to hit me and just judge me according to the law. This part is kind of amusing. The people near Paul told him, “Do you know he is? He’s the high priest!” And then Paul said “Sorry, I didn’t know you were the high priest.” Do you think he really did not know Ananias was the high priest?
이때 역사적 배경에 대해 조금 설명하겠습니다. 이 시기의 예루살렘 대제사장은 아나니아였으며, 그는 폭력적이고 무자비하며 탐욕스럽고 부패한 인물로 알려져 있었습니다. 재미있는 점은 사도행전 23장은 AD 57년에서 AD 58년 사이에 일어납니다. 아나니아는 AD 47년부터 대제사장으로 활동하고 있었습니다. 바울이 아나니아가 대제사장임을 모르는 것은 불가능합니다. 그는 10년 동안 대제사장이었을 뿐만 아니라 그에게 걸맞는 의복을 입고 있었을 것입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 바울은 2절에서 그를 "회칠한 담이여"이라고 부릅니다. "회칠한 담이여"란 겉으로는 괜찮아 보이지만 안쪽은 썩고 있는 상태를 의미합니다. 안타깝게 이와 같은 "회칠한 담"과 같은 기독교인들이 있습니다. 그런 목사와 리더들도 분명히 있을 것입니다. 제가 제일 먼저 인정합니다. 저는 완벽하지 않습니다. 모든 사람, 목사던, 전도사던, 다 인간이므로 기도가 필요합니다. 교회 위해서, 리더쉽 위해서, 교역자 위해서 기도 부탁합니다. 하나님 없이는 할 수 있는게 없습니다.
I’ll tell you a little bit of historical context. The high priest in Jerusalem during this time was Ananias and he was known to be violent, ruthless, gluttonous, and corrupt. Here is the interesting part. Acts 23 takes place somewhere between AD 57 and 58. Ananias has been the high priest since AD 47. There is no way that Paul didn’t know he was the high priest. He was the high priest for 10 years and he probably was dressed accordingly. But Paul called him a whitewashed wall in verse 2. What is a whitewashed wall? This term comes out once in the Old Testament in the book of Ezekiel and once in today’s scripture. Let’s say you have a brown wooden fence where the wood itself is rotting. However, you decide to coat it with some white paint. What will happen to that fence over time? When rain, snow, wind comes, that fence will eventually look like its rotting again. So a whitewashed wall is saying that although you might look on the outside, you are rotting on the inside. Unfortunately, there are Christians who are like these whitewashed walls. There are pastors and leaders who are like these whitewashed walls. I’m the first to admit that I am nowhere near perfect. Because pastors are in the position of leadership and since we are all human, we need prayer. Please pray for the church, the leadership, the pastors because none of this can be done with God.
6절에서 바울은 한 가지를 말하자마자 다시 혼란이 일어납니다. "여러분 형제들아 나는 바리새인이요 또 바리새인의 아들이라 죽은 자의 소망 곧 부활로 말미암아 내가 심문을 받노라." 그 시기에는 바리새인들과 사두개인들이 있었습니다. 바리새인은 모든 규칙과 법을 지키는 것을 강조했습니다. 사두개인들은 논쟁을 좋아하고 논리적 사고를 즐겼습니다. 그리고 그들은 부활의 이론을 부인했습니다. 그러나 우리가 기억해야 할 것은 바리새인들과 사두개인들은 모두 기독교에 반대했다는 것입니다. 바울은 이 말을 하면 이 두 파가 자극 받을 줄 알았습니다. 그래서 이렇게 혼란이 일어나는 동안 군대는 바울을 영내로 데려갑니다.
In Verse 6, Paul says one thing, and again chaos happens: “My brothers, I am a Pharisee, descended from Pharisees. I stand on trial because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead.”
So during this time, there were two religious sects in power: the pharisees and Sadducees. The pharisees placed a great emphasis on keeping all the rules and regulations. The Sadducees loved to debate and loved to think logically. And they denied this idea of resurrection from the dead. But what we need to remember is that both the pharisees and Sadducees opposed Christianity. And Paul knows that they will both go crazy if he gives them a little incentive to. While chaos happens, the troops take Paul down back into the barracks.
오늘의 마지막 절인 11절을 살펴봅시다. "그 날 밤에 주께서 바울 곁에 서서 이르시되 담대하라 네가 예루살렘에서 나의 일을 증언한 것 같이 로마에서도 증언하여야 하리라 하시니라" 하나님이 여러분의 인생에 정확한 시기에 나타난 적이 있나요? 그것은 우리에게 격려와 축복이 됩니다. 주님께서 바울에게 직접 나타났다는 점을 주목하십시오. 성경 전체를 살펴보면 하나님은 보통 매신저나 천사들을 보내시거나 하셨지만 이번에는 하나님 본인이 바울에게 나타나셨습니다. 그가 왜 바울에게 나타나셨을까요? 바울은 훌륭한 기독교인이었지만 초인적인 존재는 아니었습니다. 바울이 지난 몇 일 동안 겪은 모든 일을 생각해보십시오. 폭동부터 감옥까지의 일련의 사건이 있었습니다. 아마도 실망이 조금 컸을 겁니다. 그래서 주님은 와서 그 곁에서 바울을 격려하십니다.
Notice what today’s last verse says in verse 11: The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, “Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.”
Has God ever showed up in your life at just the right time? It’s so encouraging and blessing for us. Notice that the Lord Himself appeared to Paul. Throughout the bible, He usually sends messengers or angels but He Himself came to Paul. Why did He come to Paul? Paul was a great Christian, but he was not Superman. He was a human. Think of all the things that happened to Paul in the past couple of days from riots to prison. There was probably some type of discouragement. And the Lord came and stood beside him.
근데 주님은 곧바로 오지 않으셨습니다. 주님은 밤에 오셨습니다. 여기에서 주님이 말씀 하십니다. 기운을 잃지 마십시오. 포기하지 마십시오. 격려받으십시오. 슬픔이 밤에 있을지라도 주님이 주시는 기쁨은 반드시 옵니다. 때로는 고통의 밤이 너무 길게 느껴질 수 있습니다. 하지만 기쁨이 있습니다. 여러분들이 주님과 함께 하는 아침이 찾아올 것입니다. 그것이 여러분의 계획대로 오지 않을 수도 있습니다. 원하는 대로 오지 않을 수도 있습니다. 하지만 하나님은 신실하시고 또한 합당하십니다.
Lord came to Paul and was saying, “I am not done with you yet. And I’ve still got plans for you. You are going to go to Rome and continue to preach.” Did the Lord come immediately to Paul. No, the Lord came at night. He’s got a word for you today. Don’t quit. Don’t give up. Be encouraged. Sorrow may last for the night, but joy comes in the morning. Sometimes you feel that morning right away, don’t you? Sometimes the nights might feel long. But there’s joy. Your morning is going to come. It may not come the way that you have it mapped out. It may not come the way that you want it to. But God is faithful, and He is worthy. He has a purpose, and you are going to help bring Him glory if you’ll let Him.
여기에 제가 자신감을 가지고 말할 수 있는 이유가 있습니다. 오늘 아침에 일어나 숨을 쉬고 나가신다는 것은 하나님이 여러분들과 아직 끝나지 않았음을 의미합니다. 하나님이 여러분에게 더 말씀하실 것이니까요. 그 말씀이 무엇인지는 모르겠지만, 하나님은 우연의 하나님이 아닙니다. 하나님은 완벽하신 하나님인 줄 믿습니다. 그분을 바라보고 귀 기울이십시오. 왜냐하면 우리 하나님은 위대한 하나님인 줄 믿습니다.
그런즉 너희는 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라 그리하면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 더하시리라 (마태복음 6:33)
Here’s why I can say that with confidence: The very fact that you woke up this morning and you took a breath in and out tells me God’s not done with you yet. If he was done with you, you wouldn’t be here. The very fact that you’re in this room today tells me God’s got a word for you today. I don’t know what it is, but I don’t believe that God is a God of coincidence. He’s a God of sovereignty, providence, and perfection. So whatever your season, look and listen, because he is a great God.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33)
