18:1 그 후에 바울이 아덴을 떠나 고린도에 이르러
1 After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.
18:2 아굴라라 하는 본도에서 난 유대인 한 사람을 만나니 글라우디오가 모든 유대인을 명하여 로마에서 떠나라 한 고로 그가 그 아내 브리스길라와 함께 이달리야로부터 새로 온지라 바울이 그들에게 가매
2 There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them,
18:3 생업이 같으므로 함께 살며 일을하니 그 생업은 천막을 만드는 것이더라
3 and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them.
18:4 안식일마다 바울이 회당에서 강론하고 유대인과 헬라인을 권면하니라
4 Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.
18:5 실라와 디모데가 마게도냐로부터 내려오매 바울이 하나님의 말씀에 붙잡혀 유대인들에게 예수는 그리스도라 밝히 증언하니
5 When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.
18:6 그들이 대적하여 비방하거늘 바울이 옷을 털면서 이르되 너희 피가 너희 머리로 돌아갈 것이요 나는 깨끗하니라 이후에는 이방인에게로 가리라 하고
6 But when they opposed Paul and became abusive, he shook out his clothes in protest and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent of it. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”
18:7 거기서 옮겨 하나님을 경외하는 디도 유스도라 하는 사람의 집에 들어가니 그 집은 회당 옆이라
7 Then Paul left the synagogue and went next door to the house of Titius Justus, a worshiper of God.
18:8 또 회당장 그리스보가 온 집안과 더불어 주를 믿으며 수많은 고린도 사람도 듣고 믿어 세례를 받더라
8 Crispus, the synagogue leader, and his entire household believed in the Lord; and many of the Corinthians who heard Paul believed and were baptized.
18:9 밤에 주께서 환상 가운데 바울에게 말씀하시되 두려워하지 말며 침묵하지 말고 말하라
9 One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent.
18:10 내가 너와 함께 있으매 어떤 사람도 너를 대적하여 해롭게 할 자가 없을 것이니 이는 이 성중에 내 백성이 많음이라 하시더라
10 For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.”
18:11 일 년 육 개월을 머물며 그들 가운데서 하나님의 말씀을 가르치니라
11 So Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and a half, teaching them the word of God.
만남의 중요함은 말로 할 수 없습니다.
서로 얼굴만 봐도 힘이 되고, 함께 라면 두려움이 없어지는 그런 만남은 참으로 소중합니다.
아프리카 속담에 빨리 가려면 혼자 가고 멀리 가려면 함께 가라는 말이 있습니다.
한사랑교회 성도들의 만남은 이러한 만남이라고 생각합니다.
오늘 사도는 아덴에 이어 두 번째 큰 대도시를 방문하는데 바로 고린도입니다.
사도는 이 거대한 도시에서 운명적인 만남을 갖게 됩니다.
The importance of 'meeting' someone cannot be expressed in words. The kind of meeting where just seeing each other's faces provides strength, and being together removes fear, is truly precious. There is an African proverb that says, "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together." I believe the meetings among the members of the Hansarang Church are such valuable encounters.
Today, the apostle is visiting the second major city, Corinth, following his visit to Aden. In this vast city, the apostle is destined to have a momentous encounter.
삶의 동역자
고린도는 한창 절정기에는 75만 명의 시민이 살 정도로 큰 도시였습니다.
세계적인 중앙시장의 역할을 감당하는 거대한 상업의 중심지였습니다.
지금도 서쪽 바다인 이오니아해와 동쪽의 에게해를 연결하는 운하가 있는데, 길이 6.2Km, 폭 25m(바닥은 21m), 수심 8~10m, 다리에서 수면까지의 높이가 약 80m 나 된다고 합니다.
또한 포세이돈(넵툰), 아크로폴리스-아프로디테(비너스) 등 심각한 우상숭배를 하던 도시였습니다.
고린도인을 말하는 단어인 코린티아조마이는 음란한 행위를 하다라는 의미가 될 정도였습니다.
매춘부를 가리키는 단어인 코린티아스테스도 고린도에서 나온 것입니다.
그뿐 아니라 그들은 교만과 부도덕의 도시였습니다.
사도는 고린도가 이런 도시임을 알기에 고전 2:3~5에서 이렇게 고백했습니다.
내가 너희 가운데 거할 때에 약하고 두려워하고 심히 떨었노라
내 말과 내 전도함이 설득력 있는 지혜의 말로 하지 아니하고 다만 성령의 나타나심과 능력으로 하여 너희 믿음이 사람의 지혜에 있지 아니하고 다만 하나님의 능력에 있게 하려 하였노라 (고전 2:3~5)
The Co-worker of Life
Corinth was once a thriving city, with a population of around 750,000 at its peak. It served as a major commercial center, handling the role of a global central marketplace. Even today, it is connected by a canal that links the western Ionian Sea with the eastern Aegean Sea. The canal is approximately 6.2 km long, 25 meters wide (with a bottom width of 21 meters), and has a depth of 8 to 10 meters. The height from the bridge to the water surface is about 80 meters.
Moreover, Corinth was a city known for its serious idol worship, including Poseidon (Neptune) and Acropolis-Aphrodite (Venus). The term "Corinthianize" (Korinthiazo) used to describe Corinthians, implied engaging in licentious behavior. The term "Corinthiastes," referring to a prostitute, also originated from Corinth. They were also characterized by arrogance and immorality.
The apostle knew about Corinth's nature, which led him to confess in 1 Corinthians 2:3-5:
3 I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.
하지만 이러한 교만과 부도덕의 도시에서 바울은 운명적인 만남을 합니다.
바로 본도에서 태어난 유대인인 아굴라/브리스길라 부부입니다. 두 부부는 글라우디오 황제 때 유대인에 대한 추방령으로 말미암아 로마에서 쫓겨난 사람이었습니다. 그들의 생업은 공교롭게도 바울과 같은 텐트메이커였습니다. 신앙과 생업이 같은 사람들, 그들은 평생의 동역자가 됩니다.
고전 16:9절을 참조하면 그들의 집이 곧 교회였음을 알 수 있습니다. 바울은 다음과 같이 말합니다.
너희는 그리스도 예수 안에서 나의 동역자들인 브리스가와 아굴라에게 문안하라
그들은 내 목숨을 위하여 자기들의 목까지도 내놓았나니 나뿐 아니라
이방인의 모든 교회도 그들에게 감사하느니라 (롬 16:3-4)
However, in this city of arrogance and immorality, Paul has a fateful encounter. It is with a Jewish couple from Pontus, Aquila and Priscilla, who were born in Pontus but had been expelled from Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius due to the edict of exile against Jews. Interestingly, their occupation was the same as Paul's - tentmaking. They were individuals whose faith and livelihood intertwined, and they became lifelong co-workers.
Referring to 1 Corinthians 16:9, we can understand that their home was also a place of worship for the church. Paul speaks of them as follows:
3 Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. 4 They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them (Romans 16:3-4)
사역의 동역자
바울의 두번째 동역자 그룹은 실라와 디모데 같은 사역자들입니다.
미국의 유명한 복음 전도자 D.L. 무디는 복음성가 가수 생키와 항상 함께 다니며 집회를 했습니다.
생키의 찬양이 주는 감동과 능력의 한 예화를 함께 나누고자 한다.
미국 남북전쟁 때 생키는 북군에 참전했었다. 그가 어느 날 달빛이 환한 밤 보초를 서고 있었을 때, 남군의 한 사람이 그를 향해 총의 방아쇠를 당기려고 했다.
그때 갑자기 생키가 찬송가를 부르기 시작했다. ‘선한 목자 되신 우리 주 항상 인도하시고...’
이때 찬송에 감동을 받은 남군은 일단 노래가 끝난 다음에 생키를 죽이려 마음을 먹었다.
그런데 어릴 적에 돌아가신 어머니가 종종 불러주셨던 찬송가였던 것이 생각났다.
전쟁이 끝난 후, 증기선을 타고 여행 중이던 생키가 승객들의 요청으로 ‘선한 목자’ 찬양을 부르자 어떤 거친 인상의 까맣게 그을린 한 청년이 다가와 “혹시 남북전쟁 때 북군의 용사로 참전하지 않으셨습니까?” “네, 그랬지요.” “저, 1862년 달 밝았던 날 밤 보초병으로 서셨던 것을 기억하시겠습니까?” “네.”
생키는 놀라움을 금치 못하며 대답했다. 그때 그 청년은 생키에게 지난 이야기를 들려주며 말했다.
“당신의 찬송이 끝났을 때, 저는 도저히 당신을 향해 총을 겨눌 수가 없었습니다.
이 남자를 죽음으로부터 구원하실 수 있는 하나님이시라면 위대하시고 강하시다고 생각하는 순간 힘이 빠지고 두려워졌습니다.”
Co-workers in Ministry
Paul's second group of co-workers consists of fellow ministers such as Silas and Timothy. In the United States, the renowned evangelist D.L. Moody always held meetings accompanied by gospel singer Sankey.
Here is a story that illustrates the impact and power of Sankey's praise. During the American Civil War, Sankey served in the Union Army. One night, while he was on guard duty under the bright moonlight, an enemy soldier aimed his gun at him. In that critical moment, Sankey began to sing a hymn, "Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us."
Moved by the song, the enemy soldier decided not to pull the trigger until the song was over. The hymn reminded him of his mother, who used to sing it when he was a child. After the war, while traveling on a steamboat, Sankey was asked by fellow passengers to sing the same hymn. A rough-looking young man, severely scarred and burnt, approached him and asked, "Were you not a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War?" Sankey confirmed it. The young man then said, "I remember that night when you sang while on guard duty under the moonlight in 1862. At that moment, I could not bring myself to shoot you. I believed that if there is a God who can save that man through his song, He must be a great and powerful God, and I lost the strength and courage to harm you."
This heartwarming story demonstrates the profound impact of Sankey's praise and how his ministry and faith influenced even the hearts of his enemies.
함께 사역을 하는 것이 얼마나 큰 힘이 되는지, 누가는 실라와 디모데가 내려온 것이 바울이 하나님의 말씀에 붙잡히는 원인이 된 것 인양 기록하고 있습니다. 그도 그럴 것이 디모데는 바울에게 데살로니가 소식을 전하여 바울이 기쁨으로 데살로니가전서를 기록하게 합니다. 또한 실라는 빌립보 교회의 헌금을 전달하여, 바울이 생업에서 벗어나 마음껏 사역할 수 있게 도왔던 것입니다.
동역하는 것 자체에 기쁨과 힘이 있지만, 동시에 실제적인 사역의 유익도 무시할 수 없습니다.
우리의 사역은 질서와 말씀에 사로잡힌 사역이 되어야 합니다. 정확하게 그러나 덕을 세우며 한 사람도 시험에 들지 않도록 배려하는 것이 필요합니다. 편견을 가지고 나와 안 맞는 사람을 제외시키고, 내가 좋아하는 사람과만 일하려는 것은 피해야 합니다.
교회 리더들은 영적인 카리스마가 필요하지만, 그것이 결코 부서원들이나 팀원을 좌지우지하는 것이 되어서는 안 됩니다. 그래서 교회 리더십이 힘든 것입니다. 영적인 카리스마와 사랑이 같이 가야 합니다.
사람들을 함께 울고, 함께 웃는 동역자로 만들어야 합니다.
The significance of co-ministry is emphasized in how some have recorded that Silas and Timothy's involvement became the reason for Paul being gripped by God's Word. Indeed, Timothy brought news from Thessalonica, which led Paul to write the joyful letter of 1 Thessalonians. Furthermore, Silas delivered the financial support from the Philippian church, enabling Paul to focus on ministry without being burdened by his livelihood.
Co-working itself brings joy and strength, and the practical benefits of ministry together cannot be ignored.
Our ministry should be grounded in order and the Word. We must be careful not to cause anyone to stumble while building up others with integrity. It is essential to avoid prejudice and exclusion of those who may not fit our preferences while seeking to work only with those we favor.
Church leaders need spiritual charisma, but it should never be used to dominate or manipulate members or team members. This is why church leadership can be challenging. Spiritual charisma must be coupled with love.
We should strive to become co-workers who weep and rejoice together.
지쳤다가도 두려운 생각이 들다가도 그 사람만 만나면 서로 힘이 솟고 위로를 얻고, 어두웠던 마음이 밝아져 말씀, 성령에 붙잡히게 만들어 주는 사람! 그런 사람을 내게 주시면 좋겠습니다.
하지만 늘, 그런 사람이 주변에 있으면 좋겠다고 생각만 하지 말고, 내가 그런 사람 되어야 합니다.
만남의 목적은 두려워하지 않고 담대하게 복음을 전하기 위한 것이고, 서로가 서로에게 그러한 존재가 되어야 합니다.
주님이 우리와 함께 하셔야 합니다. 만일 주님이 없이 함께 울고 웃으면 동호회일 뿐입니다.
하지만 주님과 함께 서로 울고 웃으면 그것이 바로 교회인 것입니다.
Even when I feel tired or overwhelmed by fearful thoughts, meeting such person gives us both strength, comfort, and brightens our hearts. They hold onto the Word and the Holy Spirit, uplifting and encouraging each other. I wish to have such a person in my life. However, I shouldn't just wish for such a person to be around me all the time; I should strive to be that person myself.
The purpose of our encounters is to fearlessly and boldly proclaim the Gospel, and we should become such a presence for one another. The Lord must be with us. If we laugh and cry together without the Lord, it's merely a social gathering. But if we laugh and cry together with the Lord, that is what makes us a church.
