10:1 가이사랴에 고넬료라 하는 사람이 있으니 이달리야 부대라 하는 군대의 백부장이라
1 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.
10:2 그가 경건하여 온 집안과 더불어 하나님을 경외하며 백성을 많이 구제하고 하나님께 항상 기도하더니
2 He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.
10:3 하루는 제 구 시쯤 되어 환상 중에 밝히 보매 하나님의 사자가 들어와 이르되 고넬료야 하니
3 One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, “Cornelius!”
10:4 고넬료가 주목하여 보고 두려워 이르되 네 기도와 구제가 하나님 앞에 상달되어 기억하신 바 되었으니
4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked.
The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.
10:5 네가 지금 사람들을 욥바에 보내어 베드로라 하는 시몬을 청하라
5 Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter.
10:6 그는 무두장이 시몬의 집에 유숙하니 그 집은 해변에 있다 하더라
6 He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea.”
10:7 마침 말하던 천사가 떠나매 고넬료가 집안 하인 둘과 부하 가운데 경건한 사람 하나를 불러
7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants.
10:8 이 일을 다 이르고 욥바로 보내니라
8 He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.
10:9 이튿날 그들이 길을 가다가 그 성에 가까이 갔을 그 때에 베드로가 기도하려고 지붕에 올라가니 그 시각은 제 육 시더라
9 About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray.
10:10 그가 시장하여 먹고자 하매 사람들이 준비할 때에 황홀한 중에
10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.
10:11 하늘이 열리며 한 그릇이 내려오는 것을 보니 큰 보자기 같고 네 귀를 매어 땅에 드리웠더라
11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners.
10:12 그 안에는 땅에 있는 각종 네 발 가진 짐승과 기는 것과 공중에 나는 것들이 있더라
12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds.
10:13 또 소리가 있으되 베드로야 일어나 잡아 먹어라 하거늘
13 Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”
10:14 베드로가 이르되 주여 그럴 수 없나이다 속되고 깨끗하지 아니한 것을 내가 결코 먹지 아니하였나이다 한 대
14 “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”
10:15 또 두 번째 소리가 있으되 하나님께서 깨끗하게 하신 것을 네가 속되다 하지 말라 하더라
15 The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
10:16 이런 일이 세 번 있은 후 그 그릇이 곧 하늘로 올려져 가니라
16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.
인간의 평균 수명은 대략 77세입니다. 약 28,000일, 670,000시간, 4천만분입니다. 평균 사람은 스마트폰을 하루에 3시간 15분을 봅니다. 한 달에 약 98시간, 일 년에 50일, 인생의 약 10년입니다. 평균 사람은 화장실에서 약 1시간을 보냅니다. 한 달에30시간, 일 년에 15일, 인생에서 약 3년입니다. 평균 사람은 하루에 5시간 동안 텔레비전을 봅니다. 한 달에 150시간, 일 년에75일, 인생에서 약 15년입니다. 그러면 기독교인들의 기도시간은 어떨까요? 평균 기독교인은 하루에 약 15분 동안 기도합니다. 한 달에 약 7.5시간, 일 년에 약 4일, 인생의 약 1년입니다.
우리는 매년 50일동안은 스마트폰을 보고, 15일동안은 화장실에서 보내며, 75일동안은 미디어를 봅니다. 그러나 기도에는 단지 매년4일. 어떻습니까? 뭔가 잘못되지 않았나요?
특히 이 세대는 스마트폰과 미디어 등 많은 것에 중독되어 있습니다. 그래서 우리는 이 다음 세대를 위해 기도도 해야 되지만 기성세대도 많이 중독이 되어있습니다. 우리가 모두 잠에서 영적으로 깨어나 진짜 그리스도인으로 우리가 굳게 설수 있기를 기도해야 합니다.
하나님을 경외하는 세대가 될 수 있도록 기도해야 합니다.
A Human beings’ life expectancy is about 77 years old. That is 28,000 days. 670,000 hours. 40 million minutes. The average person spends 3 hours and 15 minutes on their phone every day. That is about 98 hours a month. 50 days a year. 10 years in a lifetime. The average person spends about an hour in the bathroom. This is 30 hours per month. 15 days a year. 3 years in a lifetime. The average person spends about 5 hours watching television. This is 150 hours a month. 75 days a year. 15 years in a lifetime. The average Christian spends about 15 minutes per day praying. That is about 7.5 hours a month. About 4 days a year. About a year during a lifetime. We spend 50 days a year on our phones. 15 days a year in the bathroom. 75 days a year watching TV. But just 4 days a year praying. And the prayer time accounts for only Christians. Isn’t something wrong with this picture?
This generation especially is addicted to so many things like phones and media. So we have to continue to pray for this next generation that they may wake up from this slumber and stand firm as Christians and not just as church goers. We have to pray that all generations may truly be God-fearing generations.
오늘의 성경 본문에서 우리는 하나님을 경외하는 사람인 고넬료를 만납니다. 그는 가이사랴 라는 곳에서 삽니다. 가이사랴는 유대 지역의 지중해 연안에 위치한 로마 도시로 로마 총독의 본부이기도 합니다. 고넬료는 백부장이었습니다. 그는 로마 군대의 장교였으며 이스라엘의 억압자에게 충성하는 매우 충실한 자였습니다다. 그는 이방인이기 때문에 유대인들은 당연히 그를 미워했을 것입니다. 그러나 우리는 2절에서 고넬료가 경건한 사람이었고 하나님을 경외하는 사람임을 알 수 있습니다. 그는 항상 하나님께 기도하고 힘든 사람들을 많이 구제했습니다. 고넬료와 같은 이방인은 로마에서 참 많이 볼수 없는 존재였습니다. 보통 로마사람들은 주피터, 아우구스투스, 마르스, 베누스와 같은 다양한 로마 신에게 노출되었습니다. 고넬료는 유대인들이 "하나님을경외하는 사람들"이라고 불렀던 그 카테고리에 속했습니다. 이들은 이스라엘의 하나님을 사랑하는 이방인들이었고 유대인의 법을 최대한 따랐지만 할례를 받지는 않았습니다. 그래서 그들은 완전한 기독교인이 아니었고, 이방인도 아니었습니다. 그냥 반기독교인 반 이방인이라고 보면됩니다.
In today’s scriptures we meet a God-fearing man. A very devout man. Someone who spent a lot of time in prayer. We meet a man named Cornelius. He is from a place called Caesarea. Caesarea was a Roman city on the shores of the Mediterranean in Judea. It was the headquarters of the Roman governor. Cornelius was a centurion. He was an officer in the Roman army. He was a very loyal servant of the oppressors of Israel. Any Jew would naturally hate him because Cornelius is a gentile. However, we see in verse 2 that Cornelius was a devout man and one who feared God. He always prayed to God and gave generously to those who were in need. And gentiles like Cornelius was quite rare especially in a place like Rome. Usually, Romans would get exposed to a lot of Roman gods like Jupiter, Augustus, Mars, and Venus. Cornelius was in the category of what the Jews called God-fearers. These were Gentiles who loved the God of Israel. They follow the Jewish law as much as possible, but they didn’t submit to circumcision. So, they weren’t fully Christian. They were kind of half-half. Not quite a gentile. But nowhere near a Jew.
3절에서 하나님이 오후 3시에 천사를 보내 고넬료에게 말씀하셨습니다. 오후 3시는 유대인들이 기도하는 시간이었습니다. 유대인들은 보통 하루에 세 번 기도했습니다: 오전 9시, 오후 3시, 오후 6시. 고넬료는 이 시간에 기도를 하고 있었습니다. 사도행전30절에서는 자신이 기도할 때 천사가 그에게 나타났다고 말합니다. 그리고 하나님이 고넬료에게 소리쳐서 "고넬료야!" 하시자그는 "주님, 무엇입니까?"라고 대답하며 두려움 가득한 눈으로 천사를 바라봤습니다. 고넬료가 하나님을 만약에 알지 못했다면이처럼 대답하지 않았을 것입니다. 그러나 그는 기도를 많이 드리는 경건한 사람으로써 이것이 하나님이란 것을 알았습니다. 그래서 이렇게 대답할 수 있었습니다. 하나님과 실제적인 관계를 가졌음을 보여줍니다. 그리고 하나님은 고넬료에게 현재 욥바에있는 시몬 베드로를 찾아가라고 말씀하셨습니다. 이때 베드로는 무두장이 시몬과 함께 있었습니다. 무두장이는 유대인들에게 부정한 직업으로 여겨졌습니다. 그는 사회적으로 배척받는 사람이었습니다. 그러나 베드로는 그와 함께 있었습니다. 고넬료는 하나님의 명령을 순종하고 사람을 보내서 베드로를 찾아 가라고합니다.
In verse 3, God sends an angel to Cornelius at 3 in the afternoon. 3 in the afternoon was typically a time when Jews pray. Jews usually prayed three times a day: 9 a.m., 3 p.m., and 6 p.m. Cornelius also says later in verse 30, that an angel appeared to him when he was praying. And God shouted Cornelius! Cornelius responded with “What is it, Lord” and stared at him in fear. If Cornelius did not know God, then he probably would not have responded like this. But because he was a praying, God-fearing man, he knew exactly who was speaking to him at this very minute. This shows that Cornelius had a real relationship with God. And God told Cornelius to go get Simon Peter who was currently at Joppa. Peter during this time was living with Simon the tanner. A tanner is a leather maker. He would get animal hides and turn it into leather. This job was considered unclean by the Jews during this time. He was an outcast. However, Peter was with him. Peter was ministering to not just Jews but Jews and gentiles. And Cornelius obeys God’s commands and sends for Peter by sending two of his household servants and a devout soldier.
하나님이 이렇게 고넬료에게 말씀하시며 베드로에게도 말씀하고 계셨습니다. 한낮에 베드로는 지붕 위로 올라가서 기도하던 중에 배고파져 황홀한 상태에 빠졌습니다. 베드로는 하늘에서 큰 보자기가 내려오며 여러 가지 동물이 있는 것을 보았습니다. 그중에는 깨끗한 동물도 있었고 그러지 못한 동물도 있었습니다. 유대인은 부정한 동물을 먹으면 안 된다는 법이 있었습니다. 하지만 하나님은 베드로에게 그 모든 각종 동물을 죽여 먹으라고 말씀하셨습니다. 베드로는 즉시 거절하며 "전혀 그럴 수 없습니다. 저는 어떤 더러운 것도 먹어본 적이 없습니다."라고 말했습니다. 베드로가 이렇게 아니요, 싫어요 한 반응 기억하시죠? 베드로의첫 번째 반응은 "아니요. 할 수 없어요."였습니다. 그리고 15절에서 하나님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. "하나님께서 깨끗하게 하신 것을 네가 속되다 하지 말라 하더라." 이것은 중요하기 때문에 하나님께서 세 번이나 반복하셨습니다. 처음에 베드로는 하나님이 그냥 음식에 대해 말씀하시는 것으로 생각했습니다. 그러나 후에 베드로는 하나님이 음식에 대해 말씀하시는 것이 아니라 유대인과 이방인에 대해 말씀하시는 것임을 깨달았습니다. 베드로는 이제부터는 유대인만을을 구원하기만 하는 것이 아니라 이방인도 구원하기 위해 가야 한다는 것을 나중에 깨달았습니다
And while Cornelius is sending men to get Peter, God is also speaking to Peter. At about noon, Peter went up on the roof to pray, he got hungry, and then he fell into a trance. Peter saw a large sheet come down from heaven and it had a big assortment of animals. There were both clean and unclean animals. And a Jew was never to eat an unclean animal. In the Old Testament, Leviticus 11 goes through some of these laws about clean and unclean animals. But God tells Peter to kill these clean and unclean animals and eat them. Right away, Peter refuses and says no way, I have never eaten anything unclean before. We’ve seen Peter say no before, right? Peter’s first instinct was no. I can’t do it.
And in verse 15, God says: “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
And this was done three times. God repeated Himself three times because it was so important. First, Peter thought God was talking about food. However, later Peter understanded that God was not talking about food but he was talking about Jews and gentiles. Peter understood that not only should he go and save the Jews but he also needs to go and save the gentiles.
오늘의 본문 통해 우리는 고넬료와 베드로라는 두 사람을 만났습니다. 한 사람은 이방인이고 다른 한 사람은 유대인입니다. 그러나 두 사람 모두 하나님께 기도하고 있을 때 하나님이 말씀하실 때 서로 다른 방식으로 응답했습니다. 고넬료는 '예'라고 응답했지만 베드로는 처음에는 '아니오'라고 응답했습니다. 우리는 스스로를 되돌아보아야 합니다. 우리는 여기서 기도하기 위해 모였습니다. 그래서 본인이 지금 새벽기도예배의 현장에 계시든지 온라인으로 QT를 읽고 계시든지 우리는 기도하기 위해 여기에 모였습니다. 그러나 우리가 순종할 준비가 되어 있지 않으면 기도에는 의미가 별로 없습니다. 하나님이 무언가를 하라고 말씀하시면어딘가에 가라고 하시면 우리는 준비되어야 합니다. 문제는 우리가 너무 똑똑하다는 것입니다. 너무 많은 것을 알고 있습니다.그래서 하나님이 우리에게 무언가를 하라고 말씀하면 우리는 먼저 스스로 생각을 해보고 계산을 해봅니다.. 그러나 우리는 하나님을 우리 작은 상자에 가둬서는 안 됩니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 모든 일을 할 수 있습니다. 우리가 상상조차 할 수 없는 일도 하나님이 가능하십니다. 우리 주님의 능력은 우리의 인간적인 이해를 초월합니다. 매일 하나님을 경외하며 기도와 성경, 순종을 통해 하나님을 찬양하며 나아가는 우리가 되길 소망합니다. 그럼 하나님을 경외한다는 것은 구체적으로 무엇입니까? 하나님께 기도하고 찬양하고 예배하는 것입니다. 어떤 인간의 눈치를보는것이 아닌 하나님의 눈치를 보는 것입니다. 우리의 육채가 앞서는 것이 않이라 하나님의 말씀과 성령님이 앞서는 것입니다.이 말씀과 성령님이 앞설때, 하나님이 우리에게 무엇이든 물어보실때 우리가 아멘으로 응답하는 우리가 되길 바랍니다.
Through today’s scriptures, we met 2 different men in Cornelius and Peter. One man is a gentile and the other is a Jew. Although both men were praying when God spoke to them, they responded in two different ways. Cornelius responded with a yes but Peter responded with a no initially. Let us reflect on ourselves. We are here to pray. So whether you are here physically or you are reading the QT online, you are here to pray. However, there is no point to prayer if we are not ready to obey. Are you ready to obey? If God says to do something, to go somewhere. Are we ready to obey? The problem is that we are all too smart. We know too many things. So when God tells us to do something, we have our own thoughts about it first. And sometimes we assume that this will not work and that we shouldn’t do it. However, we shouldn’t put God in our little box. Because God is able to do anything. God can do things that we can’t even fathom. The power of our Lord goes beyond our humanly understanding. Every day let us fear our Lord. Through prayer, through the scriptures, through our obedience, let us continue to praise him. So what is fearing the Lord? How do we fear the Lord? It is about praying to God, praising Him, and worshiping Him. It is not about being conscious about physical beings around us but it is being conscious about God. It is not our flesh that precedes us, but rather the word of God and the Holy Spirit that go before us. When the word of God and the Holy Spirit lead the way, and when God asks us anything, may we become Christians who will respond with a "Amen."
