10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!”
“Yes, Lord,” he answered.
9:11 주께서 이르시되 일어나 직가라 하는 거리로 가서 유다의 집에서 다소 사람 사울이라 하는 사람을 찾으라 그가 기도하는 중이니라
11 The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying.
9:12 그가 아나니아라 하는 사람이 들어와서 자기에게 안수하여 다시 보게 하는 것을 보았느니라 하시거늘
12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”
9:13 아나니아가 대답하되 주여 이 사람에 대하여 내가 여러 사람에게 듣사온즉 그가 예루살렘에서 주의 성도들에게 적지 않은 해를 끼쳤다 하더니
13 “Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem.
9:14 여기서도 주의 이름을 부르는 모든 사람을 결박할 권한을 대제사장들에게서 받았나이다 하거늘
14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.”
9:15 주께서 이르시되 가라 이 사람은 내 이름을 이방인과 임금들과 이스라엘 자손들에게 전하기 위하여 택한 나의 그릇이라
15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel.
9:16 그가 내 이름을 위하여 얼마나 고난을 받아야 할 것을 내가 그에게 보이리라 하시니
16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”
9:17 아나니아가 떠나 그 집에 들어가서 그에게 안수하여 이르되 형제 사울아 주 곧 네가 오는 길에서 나타나셨던 예수께서 나를 보내어 너로 다시 보게 하시고 성령으로 충만하게 하신다 하니
17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
9:18 즉시 사울의 눈에서 비늘 같은 것이 벗어져 다시 보게 된지라 일어나 세례를 받고
18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized,
9:19 음식을 먹으매 강건하여지니라 사울이 다메섹에 있는 제자들과 함께 며칠 있을새
19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength.
Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus.
나비 효과butterfly effect는 혼돈 이론에서 초기값의 미세한 차이에 의해 결과가 완전히 달라지는 현상을 뜻합니다. 이 표현은 미국의 기상학자 에드워드 노턴 로렌즈가 1972년에 미국 과학부흥협회에서 실시한 강연의 제목인 예측가능성-브라질에서의 한 나비의 날갯짓이 텍사스에 돌풍을 일으킬 수도 있는가? Does the Flap of a Butterfly's Wings in Brazil Set Off a Tornado in Texas? 에서 유래합니다.
일반적으로는 사소한 사건 하나가 나중에 커다란 효과를 가져올 수 있다는 의미로 쓰입니다.
과학도 그렇지만 인간관계, 삶에서도 얼마든지 나비효과가 있을 수 있습니다.
The term "butterfly effect" refers to the phenomenon in chaos theory where a small difference in initial conditions can lead to significantly different outcomes. This expression originated from a lecture titled "Does the Flap of a Butterfly's Wings in Brazil Set Off a Tornado in Texas?" given by American meteorologist Edward Lorenz in 1972 at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. It is generally used to convey the idea that a seemingly trivial event can have far-reaching effects later on.
The butterfly effect can be applied not only to scientific contexts but also to human relationships and various aspects of life. It suggests that even small actions or decisions can potentially lead to significant consequences.
아나니아라 쓰고 제자라 읽는다 (10~17a절)
아나니아는 여호와는 은혜로우시다 라는 뜻을 가진 이름으로, 삽비라의 남편 아나니아와 대제사장 아나니아가 성경에 나온 전부입니다. 본문에 나온 아나니아에 대한 소개는 제자가 전부인, 거의 무명에 가까운 사람입니다. 좀 더 자세한 것은 바울이 간증할 때 말한 율법에 따라 경건한 사람으로 거기 사는 모든 유대인들에게 칭찬을 듣는 아나니아(행 22:12)입니다.
톰 라이트는 그에 대해서 이렇게 설명했습니다.
그는 신자였고, 예수님의 음성을 듣는 법을 알았고, 매우 위험해 보이는 일에도
순종할 준비가 되어 있었고, 보냄 받은 곳으로 가서 지시 받은 대로 했다.
그것도 사랑과 지혜를 가지고 했다. 더 바랄 것이 없었다.
Spelled Ananias but Read as Disciple (verse 10-17a).
Ananias is a name that means "the Lord is gracious." In the Bible, there are two individuals mentioned with the name Ananias: the husband of Sapphira and the high priest Ananias. Today's scripture refers to a relatively obscure figure who is only mentioned as a disciple named Ananias. More details can be found when Paul testifies about Ananias, "he was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there." (Acts 22:12).
Regarding Ananias, Tom Wright explains it as follows:
He was a believer, he knew how to listen to the voice of Jesus, and he was prepared to obey even when it seemed dangerous. He was ready to go where he was sent and do as instructed. He did it with love and wisdom. There was nothing more to ask for.
결국 우리는 아나니아라고 쓰고 제자라고 읽을 수밖에 없습니다. 왜냐하면 그의 정체성이 제자이기 때문입니다. 주의 제자들(1), 그 도를 따르는 사람(2), 주의 성도(13) 모두 같은 의미로 통칭 제자입니다.
제자가 무엇인가요? 결국 하나님의 말씀을 따르고 사람들에게 본이 되는 사람 아닌가요?!
그리고 그것이 곧 나의 정체성이 되어야 합니다.
환상 가운데 나타나신 주님에 대한 아나니아의 반응, 주여 내가 여기 있나이다(10)는 사울의 반응, 주여 누구시니이까(5)와는 대비됩니다. 그는 이미 주님의 음성을 듣는 것에 익숙한 모습입니다.
이것이 제자의 품격입니다.
그런데 주님은 아나니아가 듣기에는 조금 무리한 부탁을 하십니다(11, 12). 그 유명한 사울이 기도하고 있으며, 사울이 기도하는 중에 아나니아가 와서 안수하여 자신의 눈을 보게 하는 환상을 보았다는 것입니다. 아나니아 본인에게 이런 말씀을 하시다니, 아나니아가 매우 당황스러웠을 것 같습니다.
저와 여러분 같으면 어떻게 하시겠습니까?
Ultimately, we can only write Ananias and read as disciples. This is because his identity is that of a disciple. The term "disciple" encompasses various meanings, including being a follower of Jesus (1), someone who follows His teachings (2), and a holy saint of the Lord (13). Isn't a disciple someone who ultimately follows the Word of God and becomes an example to others?
And it should be our very identity as well.
Ananias' response to the appearance of the Lord in a vision, "Yes, Lord" (10) stands in contrast to Saul's response, who asked, "who are you, Lord?" (5). Ananias, on the other hand, was already familiar with hearing the voice of the Lord.
This is the dignity of a disciple.
However, the Lord makes a somewhat challenging request for Ananias to fulfill (11, 12). He tells Ananias that Saul, the renowned persecutor of Christians, is praying and that Ananias should go to him, lay hands on him, and restore his sight through a vision. Such a request must have greatly bewildered Ananias.
If you and I were in the same situation, what would we do?
칼빈은 아나니아의 답변(13, 14)에 대해서 공포심 때문에 아나니아가 사양한 것이라고 단정합니다.
공포스러웠을 것은 맞지만, 그가 거절했다기 보다는 있는 사실을 그대로 주님께 말씀드린 것으로 보입니다. 이찬수 목사는 이 부분을 아나니아의 장점이라고 말했습니다. 본인의 생각에 아니고, 하고 싶지 않은 일이라도 주님이 명하시면 따르는 것, 이것이 제자의 자세입니다.
그러자 주님은 단호하게 말씀하십니다.
가라(15) 헬라어 포류우는 어서 가라! 그냥 가! 잔말 말고 가라! 딴 생각하지 말고 가라! 는 명령입니다.
15절부터 17절은 다음과 같이 연결됩니다.
주께서 이르시되 가라(15a)… 하시니(16), 아나니아가 떠나…(17)
내 생각과 원하는 것과 주님의 명령이 다르더라도 그분의 명령에 복종하는 것이 제자입니다.
그래서 디트리히 본회퍼는 하나님이 누군가를 부르실 때는 와서 죽으라고 부르시는 것이다 라고 말했습니다. 이것이 제자입니다.
Calvin concludes that Ananias declined due to fear in response to his answer (13, 14). While it is true that he must have been afraid, it seems more like he reported the facts to the Lord rather than outright refusing. Pastor Lee Chan-soo referred to this aspect as Ananias' virtue. It is not about one's own thoughts or desires but rather about obeying when the Lord commands, even if it is something one does not want to do. This is the attitude of a disciple.
In response, the Lord speaks firmly:
"Go" (15). In Greek, it is a forceful command, meaning "Go now!" or "Just go!" It is an instruction to go without delay, without second-guessing, and without entertaining other thoughts.
Verses 15 to 17 are connected as follows:
"But the Lord said to him, 'Go'... then Ananias went..." (16, 17a).
Even if our thoughts and desires differ from the Lord's command, being obedient to His command is what makes us disciples. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, "when God calls a man, He bids him to come and die." This is what it means to be a disciple.
제자의 사역 (17b~19절)
행 22:13절을 보면 바울은 아나니아가 바울의 곁에 와서 말했다고 간증을 합니다.
여기서 우리는 제자들의 사역이 무엇인지 배웁니다.
먼저 제자들의 사역은 예수님의 명령에 따라 연약한 자의 곁에 와서 손잡아 주는 사역입니다.
아나니아는 그를 형제 사울아 라고 따뜻하게 부릅니다. 형제라는 것이 무슨 의미인가요? 그가 그토록 잡아 죽이고자 했던 제자들, 그 도를 따르는 자들, 주의 성도와 같은 무리에 들어오게 되었다는 의미입니다. 곧 형제요, 가족이라는 의미입니다. 두렵고, 어안이 벙벙한, 갈피를 못 잡는 바울의 곁에서 손을 잡아주고 안수를 해주는 그의 손이야 말로 바로 제자들의 사역이 무엇인지를 보여줍니다.
The Ministry of Disciples (verses 17b-19)
In Acts 22:13, Paul testifies that Ananias came to him and spoke by the Lord's command. Here, we learn what the ministry of disciples entails.
First, the ministry of disciples involves coming alongside the weak and extending a helping hand according to the command of Jesus.
Ananias warmly addresses Paul as "brother Saul." What does it mean to call him "brother"? It signifies that he has become part of the same community as those disciples who were sought to be killed, the followers of the same Way, and the saints of the Lord. It means they are brothers, family. In the bewildered presence of Paul, who was fearful and unsure, Ananias extending his hand, providing assurance and laying hands on him, exemplifies what the ministry of disciples is all about.
다음 제자들의 사역은 사람을 새롭게, 강건케 하는 사역입니다.
제자들의 사역은 보냄을 받고, 보게 하고, 성령 충만하게 하는 사역이었습니다.
실제로 아나니아는 사울에게 안수하여 그를 보게 하고, 세례를 주고, 음식을 주어 강건케 했습니다.
이것이 제자의 사역입니다. 사람을 새롭게 하고, 연약한 자를 일으켜 세워 강건케 하는 것입니다.
생각해 보십시오. 그의 이러한 작은 사역 하나가 기독교 전체를 바꾸었습니다.
비록 그가 예수님의 음성을 들었지만, 바울이 정말 이 정도일 것을 알았을까요? 아닐 것입니다.

Second, the ministry of disciples involves renewing and strengthening people.
The ministry of disciples is about being sent, enabling others to see, and filling them with the Holy Spirit. In actuality, Ananias lays hands on Saul, restores his sight, baptizes him, and provides him with nourishment to strengthen him. This is the ministry of discipleship—making people new, lifting up the weak, and strengthening them.
Think about it. This small act of ministry changed the entire course of Christianity. Though Ananias had heard the voice of Jesus, could he have anticipated the extent of his calling? Probably not. However, it was his obedience to the Lord's command that brought about such a significant transformation in Christianity. Barclay referred to Ananias as one of the forgotten heroes of the Christian church. His kind words, the hand that lifted Paul, the hand that laid on him, the hand that provided nourishment—these were the things that made Paul become who he was.
사도행전9장의 주인공이 누구라고 생각하십니까? 바울? 아니면 아나니아? 아닙니다.
계속해서 지금도 살아서 역사하시며 활동하시는 예수님입니다.
왜, 주님은 아나니아를 사용하셨으까요? 직접 하셔도 될 텐데…
겸손, 사랑, 함께 동역함… 이라는 단어가 생각납니다.
하나님은 우리가 예수님의 손이 되기를 원하십니다. 더 나아가 각자의 삶 속에서 작은 예수가 되시기를 원하십니다. 제자는 바로 그 하나님이신 예수 그리스도를 사랑하고 닮고자 하는 자들인 것입니다.
주님은 지금도 이 시대의 아나니아와 바울을 찾고 계십니다.
오늘 하루 주님의 제자가 되어 연약한 자들의 손을 잡아 주고, 강건케 하는 아름다운 사역을 감당하는 우리가 되기를 기도합니다.
Who do you think is the protagonist of Acts 9? Paul? Or Ananias? No, it's not them.
The protagonist who is still alive, actively working and making history is none other than Jesus Himself. Why did the Lord choose to use Ananias instead of doing it Himself? He could have done it directly...
The words that come to mind are humility, love, and co-laboring.
God desires for us to be the hands of Jesus. Furthermore, He wants us to become a 'small Jesus' in our own lives. Disciples are those who love and seek to resemble the very God who is Jesus Christ.
The Lord is still seeking Ananias and Paul in this age.
Today, let us become disciples of the Lord, reaching out our hands to the weak and strengthening them, and pray that we may fulfill the beautiful ministry with love and grace.
