5:1 아나니아라 하는 사람이 그의 아내 삽비라와 더불어 소유를 팔아
1 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.
5:2 그 값에서 얼마를 감추매 그 아내도 알더라 얼마만 가져다가 사도들의 발 앞에 두니
2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.
5:3 베드로가 이르되 아나니아야 어찌하여 사탄이 네 마음에 가득하여 네가 성령을 속이고 땅 값 얼마를 감추었느냐
3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?
5:4 땅이 그대로 있을 때에는 네 땅이 아니며 판 후에도 네 마음대로 할 수가 없더냐 어찌하여 이 일을 네 마음에 두었느냐 사람에게 거짓말한 것이 아니요 하나님께로다
4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”
5:5 아니니아가 이 말을 듣고 엎드러져 혼이 떠나니 이 일을 듣는 사람이 다 크게 두려워하더라
5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened.
5:6 젊은 사람들이 일어나 시신을 싸서 메고 나가 장사하니라
6 Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.
5:7 세 시간쯤 지나 그의 아내가 그 일어난 일을 알지 못하고 들어오니
7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
5:8 베드로가 이르되 그 땅 판 값이 이것뿐이냐 내게 말하라 하니 이르되 예 이것뿐이라 하더라
8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”
“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”
5:9 베드로가 이르되 너희가 어찌 함께 꾀하여 주의 영을 시험하려 하느냐 보라 네 남편을 장사하고 오는 사람들의 발이 문 앞에 이르렀으니 또 너를 메어 내가리라 하니
9 Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”
5:10 곧 그가 베드로의 발 앞에 엎드러져 혼이 떠나는지라 젊은 사람들이 들어와 죽은 것을 보고 메어다가 그의 남편 곁에 장사하니
10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
5:11 온 교회와 이 일을 듣는 사람들이 다 크게 두려워하니라
11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.
5:12 사도들의 손을 통하여 민간에 표적과 기사가 많이 일어나매 믿는 사람이 다 마음을 같이하여 솔로몬 행각에 모이고
12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade.
5:13 그 나머지는 감히 그들과 상종하는 사람이 없으나 백성이 칭송하더라
13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.
5:14 믿고 주께로 나아오는 자가 더 많으니 남녀의 큰 무리더라
14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.
5:15 심지어 병든 사람을 메고 거리에 나가 침대와 요 위에 누이고 베드로가 지날 때에 혹 그의 그림자라도 누구에게 덮일까 바라고
15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.
5:16 예루살렘 부근의 수많은 사람들도 모여 병든 사람과 더러운 귀신에게 괴로움 받는 사람을 데리고 와서 다 나음을 얻으니라
16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.
오늘의 성경 구절에서 우리는 아나니아와 삽비라를 만납니다. 교회를 오랫동안 다니셨다면 이 이야기를 다 알고 계실 겁니다. 아나니아와 삽비라의 죽음은 참 안타까운 사건입니다. 1절부터 이 이야기를 살펴봅시다. 1절에서 아나니아와 삽비라 “도” 소유를 팔았다고 나와있습니다. "도"란 단어는 몇개의 성경 번역본에 나와있습니다. 이전에 4장 36절 37절에 바나바가 소유을 팔고 그 돈을 전부 교회에 기부하고 교회에서 존경 받았던 것을 생각하고 아나니아와 삽비라도 마찬가지로 존경 받고 싶어했습니다. 그래서 그들도 팔았습니다. 그리고 그 돈의 일부를 교회에 기부했습니다. 이 때까지는 좋았습니다. 그러나 2절에서 그들은 일부 돈을 "빼앗아 감추었다"고 합니다. 헬라어로 "빼앗아 감추었다"는 노스피조마이 인데, 이는 도적질을 의미합니다. 이 단어는 여호수아 7:21에서 아간이 도난을 저질렀다는 맥락에서도 사용되었습니다. 또 다른 경우는 디도서 2:10에서 도둑질을 의미하는 용도로 사용되었습니다. 남편과 아내 모두 이 사실을 알고 있었습니다. 그들은 사람들에게 좋은 일은 별로 하지 않고 좋은 이미지만 가지기를 원했습니다.
존 칼빈은 아나니아와 삽비라가 저질렀던 죄를 6가지로 분석했습니다: 하나님을 모독한 것, 거짓말 하는 것, 왜곡된 허영과 야망, 믿음의 결여, 선하고 거룩한 질서의 타락, 그리고 위선.
In today’s scripture, we meet Ananias and Sapphira. If you’ve been going to church for a while, you probably all know this story. The death of Ananias and Sapphira is a tragic one. Let’s look at the story from verse 1. Verse 1 says that this couple Ananias and Sapphira “ALSO” sold a piece of property. The Word “ALSO” appears in some of the Bible translations. When you look at what happened right before, Barnabas sold some property, gave all the money to the church, and was well respected. Ananias and Sapphira ALSO wanted to be respected just like Barnabas. So, they sold some property. And when they received the money for the property, they gave a portion of it to the church. It was all good up to this point. But in verse 2, it says they “kept back” some money for themselves. Kept back in Greek is nosphizomai, which means to misappropriate. This same word was used of Achan’s theft in Joshua 7:21. And the other time it was used was in Titus 2:10 when it meant steal. And both husband and the wife knew about this. They both wanted this image of generosity without actually being remarkably generous.
John Calvin broke it down into 6 sins that Ananias and Sapphira committed: the contempt of God, sacrilegious defrauding, perverse vanity and ambition, lack of faith, the corrupting of good and holy order, and hypocrisy.
그래서 베드로가 3절에서 그들에게 질문했습니다. So Peter confronts them in verse 3, “Why did you lie to the Holy Spirit?” He didn’t say why did you lie to me, why did you lie to the church, but he said why did you lie to the Holy Spirit.
Peter acknowledged that this property was his, he also acknowledged that after the property was sold, the money was in his control. Ananias was free to do whatever he wanted with that money. However, he used that money to inflate his spiritual image and pride. He used the money to try to earn respect from people. And in verse 5, Ananias fell down and died. Some scholars think he died because of a heart attack, from the shock of being exposed. But the reason why he died was simple. He died because of sin. Romans 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus Our Lord”. This was judgement from God. The result of sin is death. However, if you repent and believe in Jesus Christ, we will receive eternal life. Amen!
그 후에 삽비라가 들어와서 베드로가 8절에서 그에게 물었습니다. "너희가 이 땅을 팔아 얻은 값이 이것이냐?" 삽비라가 그렇다고 말하자 그녀도 베드로의 발 앞에서 사망했습니다. 그렇게 아나니아와 삽비라는 죄로 인해 죽은 것입니다.
흥미로운 점은 삽비라라는 이름은 아랍어로 "아름다움"을 의미한다는 것이입니다. 그리고 아나니아라는 이름은 히브리어로 "하나님은 자비롭다"를 의미합니다. 이 사건 이후 12-16절을 보면 하나님은 자비롭다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 비록 교회와 이 사건을 들은 모든 사람들에게 두려움이 생겼지만, 사도들은 계속해서 하나님의 일, 병든 사람들의 치유, 사악한 영들을 쫓아내는 일을 하였습니다. 이 모든 일은 그들이 성령을 가지고 있었기 때문에 가능했습니다.
Soon after, Sapphira came in and Peter asked her in verse 8, “Is this the price you got for the land?”. When Sapphira said yes, she also died at the feet of Peter. So both Ananias and Sapphira were dead due to this sin.
What’s interesting is that the name Sapphira means beautiful in Aramaic. And the name Ananias means God is gracious in Hebrew. And when we look at what happened after this incident from verses 12-16, we see that God is gracious. Although fear seized the church and all who heard about these events, the apostles continued to do the work of God, healing the sick and driving out evil spirits. All of these were possible because they had the Holy Spirit.
오늘의 이야기는 우리가 헌금으로 드리는 돈의 양에 관한 것이 아닙니다. 어떤 교회들은 이 구절을 인용하여 일정 금액의 헌금을 드리지 않으면 하나님이 죽이실 것이라고 주장하기도 합니다. 이 이야기는 우리가 성령과 하나가 되었는지에 관한 것입니다. 하나님은 우리의 돈을 원하시는 것이 아니고 우리의 마음과 헌신을 원하십니다.
Today’s story is not about how much money we give for offering. Some churches use this verse by saying God will strike you dead if you don’t give a certain amount of offering. It is about whether you are one with the Holy Spirit. God is calling on us to examine our own hearts, motives, and our commitment to God.
지난 주말에 저는 중고등부를 수련회로 데리고 갔습니다. 수련회 준비는 너무 정신 없었는데, 저는 중고등부를 다시 맡게 될 줄 몰랐기 때문입니다. 이 중고등부 수련회는 계획에 없던 것이었습니다. 수련회 전에는 청년부 수련회와 VBS도 있었습니다. 제가 할 수 있는 유일한 일은 기도하고 성령과 하나가 되는 것이었습니다. 그래서 3주 동안 중고등부와 함께 매일 금식과 기도를 하였습니다. 간식, SNS, 핸드폰, 음료수, 음식 등을 금식했습니다. 이로 인해 중고등부는 성령과 하나가 되었습니다. 세 번째 밤(월요일)에는 서로를 위해 기도하였습니다. 각 학생이 가운데에 나오고 다른 사람들이 손을 내밀어 그 학생을 위해 기도했습니다. 어떤 일이 일어났을까요? 눈물이 모두의 눈에서 끊임없이 흘렀습니다. 슬픈 것이 아니라 성령과 함께 있었기 때문인줄 믿습니다. 이것은 성령의 일이었습니다.
This past weekend, I took the youth group to retreat from Saturday till Tuesday. All of the preparations for retreat was rushed because I never knew I was going to be in charge of youth group again. This youth retreat was never in the plans. We also had young adults retreat a week before and VBS. The only thing that I could do was pray and to be one with the Holy Spirit. So for about three weeks, the youth group did daily fasting and prayer. Every day we fasted something like snacks, social media, drinks, food, etc. And this led to the youth group being one with the Holy Spirit. On the third night (Monday), we prayed for each other. So each student went in the middle and everyone else stretched their hands out and prayed for that student. What do you think happened? Tears were flowing from everyone nonstop. Why? Not because we were sad, but we were with the Holy Spirit. This was the work of the Holy Spirit.
아나니아와 삽비라는 성령에게 거짓말을 하였습니다. 그들은 성령과 하나가 되지 않았습니다. 그러나 성령과 하나가 되면 치유와 악한 영들을 쫓아내는 일, 하나님의 일이 우리 삶에서 일어날 줄 믿습니다.
Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Spirit. They were not one with the Holy Spirit. However when you are with the Holy Spirit, we will see healing, demons driven out, and the work of God in our lives.
