1:1 하나님의 종이요 예수 그리스도의 사도인 나 바울이 사도 된 것은 하나님이 택하신 자들의 믿음과 경건함에 속한 진리의 지식과
1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness—
1:2 영생의 소망을 위함이라 이 영생은 거짓이 없으신 하나님이 영원 전부터 약속하신 것인데
2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time,
1:3 자기 때에 자기의 말씀을 전도로 나타내셨으니 이 전도는 우리 구주 하나님이 명하신 대로 내게 맡기신 것이라
3 and which now at his appointed season he has brought to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,
1:4 같은 믿음을 따라 나의 참 아들 된 디도에게 편지하노니 하나님 아버지와 그리스도 예수 우리 구주로 부터 은혜와 평강이 네게 있을지어다
4 To Titus, my true son in our common faith:
Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
1:5 내가 너를 그레데에 남겨 둔 이유는 남은 일을 정리하고 내가 명한 대로 각 성에 장로들을 세우게 하려 함이니
5 The reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.
1:6 책망할 것이 없고 한 아내의 남편이며 방탕하다 하는 비난을 받거나 불순종하는 일이 없는 믿는 자녀를 둔 자라야 할지라
6 An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient.
1:7 감독은 하나님의 청지기로서 책망할 것이 없고 제 고집대로 하지 아니하며 급히 분내지 아니하며 술을 즐기지 아니하며 구타하지 아니하며 더러운 이득을 탐하지 아니하며
7 Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain.
1:8 오직 나그네를 대접하며 선행을 좋아하며 신중하며 의로우며 거룩하며 절제하며
8 Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined.
1:9 미쁜 말씀의 가르침을 그대로 지켜야 하리니 이는 능히 바른 교훈으로 권면하고 거슬러 말하는 자들을 책망하게 하려 함이라
9 He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.
1:10 불순종하고 헛된 말을 하며 속이는 자가 많은 중 할례파 가운데 특히 그러하니
10 For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision group.
1:11 그들의 입을 막을 것이라 이런 자들이 더러운 이득을 취하려고 마땅하지 아니한 것을 가르쳐 가정들을 온통 무너뜨리는도다
11 They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain.
1:12 그레데인 중의 어떤 선지자가 말하되 그레데인들은 항상 거짓말쟁이며 악한 짐승이며 배만 위하는 게으름뱅이라 하니
12 One of Crete’s own prophets has said it: “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.”
1:13 이 증언이 참되도다 그러므로 네가 그들을 엄히 꾸짖으라 이는 그들로 하여금 믿음을 온전하게 하고
13 This saying is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith
1:14 유대인의 허탄한 이야기와 진리를 배반하는 사람들의 명령을 따르지 않게 하려 함이라
14 and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the merely human commands of those who reject the truth.
1:15 깨끗한 자들에게는 모든 것이 깨끗하나 더럽고 믿지 아니하는 자들에게는 아무 것도 깨끗한 것이 없고 오직 그들의 마음과 양심이 더러운지라
15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted.
1:16 그들이 하나님을 시인하나 행위로는 부인하니 가증한 자요 복종하지 아니하는 자요 모든 선한 일을 버리는 자니라
16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.
다음 몇일 동안은 디도서를 살펴볼 것입니다. 1장 1절을 보시면, 디도서는 바울이 썼다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 바울은 사도행전 28장에서 집에서 못나오게 가둬 났었는데 그때 풀려나고 쓴 편지가 디도서라고 학자들이 생각합니다.
그렇다면 디도는 누구일까요? 4절에서 바울은 디도를 "같은 믿음을 따라 나의 참 아들 된 디도"라고 부릅니다. 디도는 헬라인. 이방인으로 태어났지만, 바울의 밑에서 그리스도 안에서 믿음을 가지게 되었고, 나중에는 바울과 함께 여러 번의 선교 여행을 다녔습니다. 나중에 바울과 디도는 그레데로 여행을 떠나고, 디도는 이곳에 남겨졌습니다. 5절에서 바울은 "내가 너를 그레데에 남겨 둔 이유는 남은 일을 정리하고 내가 명한 대로 각 성에 장로들을 세우게 하려 함이니"라고 기록 되어 있습니다.
For the next couple of days, we are going to be looking at the book of Titus.
When we look at Chapter 1 verse 1, we can see that Titus was written by Paul. Scholars say that the book of Titus was written sometime after Paul’s First imprisonment when he was placed under house arrest in Acts 28. So, who is Titus? In verse 4, Paul calls Titus, my true son in our common faith. Titus was born a Gentile, but he was led to faith in Christ by Paul. And later he became a co-worker with Paul by going on various missionary trips. Later Paul and Titus traveled to Crete and Titus was left in Crete. In verse 5, Paul wrote, the Reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.
그렇다면 왜 바울은 디도에게 이 편지를 주기로 한 것일까요? 이것을 이해하기 위해서는 그레데의 역사적, 문화적 배경을 알아야 합니다. 그레데는 그리스 해안에 위치한 섬입니다. 당시 그들은 그리스 신화의 개념에 깊이 뿌리를 내리고 있었습니다. 그레데 사람들은 그냥 인간으로 태어난 사람들이 어떠한 행위나 선물들로 인해 그리스 신들로 됐다는 것을 믿습니다. 그들은 제우스, 포세이돈 등등 모든 신들이 그들의 섬에서 태어난 것이라고 믿었습니다. 그래서 생각해봅시다. 이렇게 신들이 많은데 디도가 하나님을 전도 할 때에 어떨까요? 그리고 가장 큰 문제점은 이런 신들의 태도 였습니다.
So why did Paul find a need to give this letter to Titus? To understand this, we must take a dive into its historical and cultural background of Crete. Crete is an island off the coast of Greece. And they were entrenched with the idea of Greek mythology back then. Cretans believed Greek gods were humans elevated to being gods through benevolent service and gifts to mankind. The people believed all these gods were born on their island including their main god Zeus. So imagine what it must have been like Titus and Paul to talk about God when they have so many gods on their island. One of their main problems was the way they worshipped gods like Zeus.
예를 들어서 제우스를 한번 봅시다. 그리스 신화에 따르면, 제우스는 어떤 수단이나 방법 따지지 않고 여자들을 유혹하려 했습니다. 그래서 한번은 남편의 모습으로 변하고 그의 아내에게 가서 잠자리를 같이 할려고 했습니다. 성적으로 너무나 안좋은 영향을 끼쳤고 그리고 거짓말도 밥 먹듯이 했습니다. 그리고 이 그레데인들은 이런 신들을 예배 했다는 것입니다.
벌써 그림이 보이지 않습니까? 당연히 신들도 이런 행동을 보이는데 그 사람들도 똑같이 행동했습니다. 그래서 바울과 디도에게는 이들에게 복음을 전하는게 급했습니다.
According to Greek mythology, Zeus loved to seduce women by any means necessary. This one time, Zeus assumed the form of a husband to get the woman into bed with him. Is this moral? No, absolutely not. Zeus was a liar and a womanizer but he was worshipped for these things. Since Zeus was a god like this, how do you think the people in Crete lived? They lived just like Zeus. So it was even more urgent for Paul and Titus to teach the Cretans about the one and true God.
그래서 바울은 디도에게 거의 처음부터 다시 시작해야겠다고 합니다. 바울은10절과 11절에 이렇게 씁니다. “불순종하고 헛된 말을 하며 속이는 자가 많은 중 할례파 가운데 특히 그러하니 그들의 입을 막을 것이라 이런 자들이 더러운 이득을 취하려고 마땅하지 아니한 것을 가르쳐 가정들을 온통 무너뜨리는도다”
심지어 교회안에서도 분열이 있었습니다. 교회 안에서는 구원 받기 위해서는 할례를 꼭 해야한다라고 주장하는 사람들이 있었는데, 이것이 사실입니까? 아니요, 우리는 하나님의 은혜로 구원 받은 줄 믿습니다. 아멘!
So Paul wanted Titus to clean house.
Paul wrote in Titus 1:10-11 For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach – and that for the sake of dishonest gain.
Even inside the church, there were divisions. There were some in the church who believed that you must be circumcised to be saved. Is this true? No, it is with the grace of God that you are saved. Amen!
바울은 새로운 지도자들 장로들이 필요했습니다. 바울에 따르면, 새로운 장로들은 제우스와는 완전히 반대되는 특징을 가져야 했습니다. 왜냐하면 거기 있는 지도자들은 하나님을 알고 있음에도 불구하고 행동으로 그를 부인했기 때문입니다. 16절에 그들이 하나님을 시인하나 행위로는 부인하니 가증한 자요 복종하지 아니하는 자요 모든 선한 일을 버리는 자니라
Paul wanted new leaders and elders who were not like these regular Cretans. According to Paul, the new elders must be basically opposite of the characteristics of Zeus. Because the leaders who were there Claimed to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for doing anything good.
여러분은 하나님을 사랑합니까? 하나님을 충분히 알고 계십니까? 아멘 이라고 대답하셨다면 우리는 성도로써 어떻게 살아가야 할까요? 우리는 행동을 통해 믿음을 나타내야 합니다. 여기서 이해를 잘 하셔야 되는게 행동이 다가 아닙니다. 이슬람은 천국을 가기 위해서 좋은 일을 나쁜 일보다 더 많이 해야한다는 것을 믿고 있습니다. 그래서 무슬림들은 엄청 착합니다. 이거는 좀 배워야 됩니다. 그리고 그들은 매일 다섯 번 메카를 향해서 무룹 꿇고 기도도 합니다. 심지어 아파트에는 메카 방향을 가리키는 화살표가 있습니다. 우리 그리스도인들도 좀 더 헌신적인 Mindset을 가지면 좋겠다라는 생각을 하는데...
So do you love God? Do you know God well? If you answered Amen, then how should we live as Christians. We should show that faith through our actions. Our faith is not like Islam in which you need to do more good than bad in order to be saved. Honestly, Muslims are probably the nicest people ever. And they are dedicated and committed as well. They are always ready to pray because they need to pray 5 times a day towards the direction of the Mecca. In Muslim apartments, they even have arrows pointing to the direction of the Mecca. Some things, we can actually learn from Muslims.
아무튼 우리의 믿음생활에 대해 한번 생각해봅시다. 매일 기도합니까? 선행을 하려고 노력합니까? 서로를 이해하려고 배려하십니까? 아니면 다른 사람이 말한 한 마디나 행동 하나에 화를 내기만 하는건 아닌가요? 하나님을 사랑한다고 말한다면, 우리는 어떻게 살아야 할까요? 우리가 예수 그리스도로 변화되어 새롭게 태어났다면, 우리의 행동은 자연스럽게 따라올 것입니다. 매일 예수님과 같이 되도록 노력합시다. 그리고 우리의 믿음이 죽은 믿음이 아닌 살아있는 믿음을 가진 한분 한분이 되시길 바랍니다.
Let’s think about our own personal walk of faith. Do you pray daily? Do we try to do good things. Are we as Christians understanding of each other. Or do you just get angry from one word that another person says or one action that a person shows. If you say that you love God, how should we live? If you live however you want, is this really loving God? If you love God, if you have been reborn, if your hearts have been transformed by Jesus, our actions will naturally follow. Everyday let us strive to be like Jesus and show faith through our actions.
