12 Abner son of Ner, together with the men of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, left Mahanaim and went to Gibeon.
2:13 스루야의 아들 요압과 다윗의 신복들도 나와 기브온 못 가에서 그들을 만나 함께 앉으니 이는 못 이쪽이요 그는 못 저쪽이라
13 Joab son of Zeruiah and David’s men went out and met them at the pool of Gibeon. One group sat down on one side of the pool and one group on the other side.
2:14 아브넬이 요압에게 이르되 원하건대 청년들에게 일어나서 우리 앞에서 겨루게 하자 요압이 이르되 일어나게 하자 하매
14 Then Abner said to Joab, “Let’s have some of the young men get up and fight hand to hand in front of us.”
“All right, let them do it,” Joab said.
2:15 그들이 일어나 그 수대로 나아가니 베냐민과 사울의 아들 이스보셋의 편에 열두 명이요 다윗의 신복 중에 열두 명이라
15 So they stood up and were counted off—twelve men for Benjamin and Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, and twelve for David.
2:16 각기 상대방의 머리를 잡고 칼로 상대방의 옆구리를 찌르매 일제히 쓰러진지라 그러므로 그 곳을 헬갓 핫수림이라 일컬었으며 기브온에 있더라
16 Then each man grabbed his opponent by the head and thrust his dagger into his opponent’s side, and they fell down together. So that place in Gibeon was called Helkath Hazzurim.
2:17 그 날에 싸움이 심히 맹렬하더니 아브넬과 이스라엘 사람들이 다윗의 신복들 앞에서 패하니라
17 The battle that day was very fierce, and Abner and the Israelites were defeated by David’s men.
2:18 그 곳에 스루야의 세 아들 요압과 아비새와 아사헬이 있었는데 아사헬의 발은 들노루 같이 빠르더라
18 The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai and Asahel. Now Asahel was as fleet-footed as a wild gazelle.
2:19 아사헬이 아브넬을 쫓아 달려가되 좌우로 치우치지 않고 아브넬의 뒤를 쫓으니
19 He chased Abner, turning neither to the right nor to the left as he pursued him.
2:20 아브넬이 뒤를 돌아보며 이르되 아사헬아 너냐 대답하되 나로라
20 Abner looked behind him and asked, “Is that you, Asahel?”
“It is,” he answered.
2:21 아브넬이 그에게 이르되 너는 왼쪽으로나 오른쪽으로나 가서 청년 하나를 붙잡아 그의 군복을 빼앗으라 하되 아사헬이 그렇게 하기를 원하지 아니하고 그의 뒤를 쫓으매
21 Then Abner said to him, “Turn aside to the right or to the left; take on one of the young men and strip him of his weapons.” But Asahel would not stop chasing him.
2:22 아브넬이 다시 아사헬에게 이르되 너는 나 쫓기를 그치라 내가 너를 쳐서 땅에 엎드러지게 할 까닭이 무엇이냐 그렇게 하면 내가 어떻게 네 형 요압을 대면하겠느냐 하되
22 Again Abner warned Asahel, “Stop chasing me! Why should I strike you down? How could I look your brother Joab in the face?”
2:23 그가 물러가기를 거절하매 아브넬이 창 뒤 끝으로 그의 배를 찌르니 창이 그의 등을 꿰뚫고 나간지라 곧 그 곳에 엎드러져 죽으매 아사헬이 엎드러져 죽은 곳에 이르는 자마다 머물러 섰더라
23 But Asahel refused to give up the pursuit; so Abner thrust the butt of his spear into Asahel’s stomach, and the spear came out through his back. He fell there and died on the spot. And every man stopped when he came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died.
2:24 요압과 아비새가 아브넬의 뒤를 쫓아 기브온 거친 땅의 길 가 기아 맞은쪽 암마 산에 이를 때에 해가 졌고
24 But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner, and as the sun was setting, they came to the hill of Ammah, near Giah on the way to the wasteland of Gibeon.
2:25 베냐민 족속은 함께 모여 아브넬을 따라 한 무리를 이루고 작은 산 꼭대기에 섰더라
25 Then the men of Benjamin rallied behind Abner. They formed themselves into a group and took their stand on top of a hill.
2:26 아브넬이 요압에게 외쳐 이르되 칼이 영원히 사람을 상하겠느냐 마침내 참혹한 일이 생길 줄을 알지 못하느냐 네가 언제 무리에게 그의 형제 쫓기를 그치라 명령하겠느냐
26 Abner called out to Joab, “Must the sword devour forever? Don’t you realize that this will end in bitterness? How long before you order your men to stop pursuing their fellow Israelites?”
2:27 요압이 이르되 하나님이 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 네가 말하지 아니하였더라면 무리가 아침에 각각 다 돌아갔을 것이요 그의 형제를 쫓지 아니하였으리라 하고
27 Joab answered, “As surely as God lives, if you had not spoken, the men would have continued pursuing them until morning.”
2:28 요압이 나팔을 불매 온 무리가 머물러 서고 다시는 이스라엘을 쫓아가지 아니하고 다시는 싸우지도 아니하니라
28 So Joab blew the trumpet, and all the troops came to a halt; they no longer pursued Israel, nor did they fight anymore.
2:29 아브넬과 그의 부하들이 밤새도록 걸어서 아라바를 지나 요단을 건너 비드론 온 땅을 지나 마하나임에 이르니라
29 All that night Abner and his men marched through the Arabah. They crossed the Jordan, continued through the morning hours and came to Mahanaim.
2:30 요압이 아브넬 쫓기를 그치고 돌아와 무리를 다 모으니 다윗의 신복 중에 열아홉 명과 아사헬이 없어졌으나
30 Then Joab stopped pursuing Abner and assembled the whole army. Besides Asahel, nineteen of David’s men were found missing.
2:31 다윗의 신복들이 베냐민과 아브넬에게 속한 자들을 쳐서 삼백육십 명을 죽였더라
31 But David’s men had killed three hundred and sixty Benjamites who were with Abner.
2:32 무리가 아사헬을 들어올려 베들레헴에 있는 그의 조상 묘에 장사하고 요압과 그의 부하들이 밤새도록 걸어서 헤브론에 이른 때에 날이 밝았더라
32 They took Asahel and buried him in his father’s tomb at Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men marched all night and arrived at Hebron by daybreak.
When I was in sixth grade, I was very little. So my mom signed me up to flag football. But I didn’t really know how to play football. Think about it. I was in sixth grade. I just came from Korea. There is no football in Korea. So I didn’t know the rules or positions or anything about the sport.
Because I knew nothing about football, the coach had a dilemma. “This kid. I have to play him somewhere. Let’s play him at center.” Center seems like a good position. Right? In basketball you have centers who usually are very good players. The word “center” itself is a pretty positive word. Remember that I was small back then. I’m guessing around 5 feet and about 120 pounds. So centers are on offense and when the quarterback says “set, hike!” the center will hike the ball to the quarterback. And the quarterback will run the play, whether it’s a run play to the running back, or a throw to one of his receivers, or a run for himself. While the quarterback is running the play, the center along with the 4 other guys up front, will block allowing time for the quarterback to run the play. But the problem was the defenders on the other side were all twice our size. So when I hiked the ball to the quarterback, we would just get crushed by the defenders. We would try to stand our ground, blocking, but we would get knocked down so fast. And this is what would happen if God is not on your side. I’m not saying that God wasn’t on my side that day but it is just an analogy. But when we try to go against God, bad things happen, and we see a similar incident happen today in the scriptures.
제가 6학년이었을 때 저는 몸이 아주 작았습니다. 그래서 제 어머니는 저를 플래그 풋볼(상대팀 허리에서 깃발을 뺏는)에 등록했습니다. 하지만 저는 풋볼을 할 줄 몰랐습니다. 생각해보세요. 저는 6학년이었습니다. 한국에서 온지 얼마 안됐어요. 한국에는 풋볼이 없습니다. 그래서 저는 규칙이나 위치 또는 이 스포츠에 대해 아무것도 몰랐습니다. 제가 풋볼에 대해 아무것도 몰랐기 때문에 코치는 딜레마에 빠졌습니다. “이 아이를 어느 포지션에서 플레이시켜야 할까... 센터에서 그를 플레이시키자.” 중앙은 좋은 위치인 것 같습니다. 농구에서는 보통 아주 좋은 선수인 센터가 있습니다. 센터라는 단어 자체가 상당히 긍정적인 단어입니다. 그때는 제 몸이 작았다는 것을 기억하십시오. 제 몸은 약 150cm 키에 50키로 정도 였습니다. 따라서 센터는 공격의 중심이고 쿼터백이 "세트, 하이크!"라고 외치면 센터는 공을 쿼터백에게 던집니다. 그리고 쿼터백은 러닝백에 대한 런 플레이든, 리시버 중 한 명에게 던지든, 자신을 위한 런이든 플레이를 실행할니다. 쿼터백이 경기를 진행하는 동안 센터는 전방에 있는 다른 4명의 선수와 함께 쿼터백이 경기를 진행할 시간을 허용하면서 차단해야합니다. 하지만 문제는 반대편 수비수가 모두 우리 몸의 두배였다는 것입니다. 그래서 제가 쿼터백에게 공을 던질 때 우리는 수비수들에게 압도당했습니다. 우리는 우리의 자리를 고수하려고 노력했지만 너무 빨리 쓰러졌습니다. 그리고 이것은 하나님이 여러분 편이 아닐 때 일어나는 일입니다. 그날 하나님이 제 편이 아니었다는 말이 아니라 비유로 말씀 드리는 것입이다. 그런데 우리가 하나님을 대적하려고 하면 안 좋은 일이 생기고, 오늘날에도 비슷한 일이 일어나는 것을 성경에서 봅니다.
So we saw yesterday that David has been anointed as King of Judah, but Abner chose to make son of Saul, Ish-Bosheth, king over Israel. And I said yesterday that Abner ruled over Israel for about two years before David took over all of Israel. And verse 11 from yesterday says, “The length of time David was king in Hebron over Judah was seven years and six months.” And some scholars say that this civil war between Ish-Bosheth and David happened during the last two years when David was in Hebron. However this war was not started by Ish-Bosheth or David. It was started by their two main commanders.
So we’ll go section by section to see what happened during this civil war.
So looking at verse 12, Abner (Not Ish-Bosheth) with the men of Ish-Bosheth left Mahanaim (HQ of the northern tribes) and went to Gibeon, about 7 miles North of Jurasalem. Gibeon is a part of David’s territory. Gibeon still exists today. It is under the Palestinian control and the city is now called Al Jib. Archaeologists actually have found this pool that Joab’s men went to. Size is about 40 feet to 35 feet. And David’s men (Not David) meet Joab’s men at this pool.
우리는 어제 다윗이 유다의 왕으로 기름부음을 받았으나, 아브넬이 사울의 아들 이스보셋을 이스라엘의 왕으로 삼기로 결정한 이야기를 보았습니다. 그리고 저는 어제 다윗이 온 이스라엘을 다스리기 전 약 2년 동안 아브넬이 이스라엘을 다스렸다고 말씀 드렸습니다. 어제 11절에 “다윗이 헤브론에서 유다 족속의 왕이 된 날 수는 칠 년 육 개월이더라”고 말씀하고 있습니다. 어떤 학자들은 이스보셋과 다윗 사이의 이 내전이 다윗이 헤브론에 있던 마지막 2년 동안 일어났다고 말합니다. 그러나 이 전쟁은 이스보셋이나 다윗에 의해 시작된 것이 아닙니다.

And in verse 14, Abner said to Joab, let’s have our young men fight! And Joab says “Let’s Do it”
So 12 men from Abner square off against 12 men from Joab. The idea is for the winner to take all. Whoever wins this battle of 12 vs. 12 will win the battle. And what happens?
Well, nobody wins. All of them grabbed each other by the head and killed their opponents.
All 24 were dead.
After all of them dies, in verse 17, a great battle breaks out.
And we see from verse 18, Asahel, one of the sons of Zeruiah and a brother of joab, chases after Abner. And from verses 19-23, we see what happened between Asahel and Abner.
So Asahel is chasing him, chasing him, chasing him...
And when we look at verse 21, we get a hint of why Asahel was chasing him so badly.
As Asahel is chasing Abner, Abner says “Turn on one of the young men and strip him of his weapons”. Asahel wanted a trophy for killing Abner. He wanted all the glory and wanted to show David that he took Abner’s armor.
When Abner was being chased, he also did not know what to do because Asahel is a brother of Joab. Abner didn’t really want to kill him. Abner told him multiple times to stop.
14절에서 아브넬이 요압에게 이르되 우리 청년들을 싸우게 하자! 그리고 요압은 "그러자"라고 말합니다.
그래서 아브넬 사람 12명이 요압 사람 12명과 맞서 싸웁니다. 아이디어는 승자가 모든 것을 가져가는 것입니다. 이 12 대 12 전투에서 승리하는 사람이 전투에서 승리하게 됩니다. 그러나 어떻게 됩니까?
글쎄, 아무도 이길 수 없습니다. 그들 모두는 서로의 머리를 잡고 상대를 죽였습니다.
24명 모두 사망했습니다.
모두 죽은 후 17절에 큰 전쟁이 일어납니다.
그리고 18절을 보면 스루야의 아들이자 요압의 형제인 아사헬이 아브넬을 쫓는 것을 봅니다. 19-23절에서 우리는 아사헬과 아브넬 사이에 일어난 일을 봅니다.
아사헬이 그를 쫓고, 쫓고, 쫓고...
그리고 21절을 보면 아사헬이 왜 그렇게 그를 쫓았는지 힌트를 얻습니다.
아사헬이 아브넬을 쫓고 있을 때 아브넬은 "젊은이 중 한 명을 공격하여 그의 무기를 빼앗아라"라고 말합니다. 아사헬은 아브넬을 죽인 것에 대한 보상을 원했습니다. 그는 모든 영광을 원했고 아브넬의 갑옷을 취했다는 것을 다윗에게 보여주고 싶었습니다.
아브넬이 쫓기고 있을 때 그도 아사헬이 요압의 형제였기 때문에 어찌할 바를 몰랐습니다. 아브넬은 정말로 그를 죽이고 싶지 않았습니다. 아브넬은 그에게 멈추라고 여러번 말했습니다.
However, Asahel’s persistence didn’t stop.
And in verse 23, Abner (by self-defense) killed Asahel.
And then in verse 24, now Joab himself and his other brother Abishai were chasing after Abner.
And in verse 28, Abner calls a cease-fire. OK Let’s stop! No more!
And Abner’s army goes back to Mahanaim while Joab and his men go back to Hebron.
And we see the result of this civil war where David lost 20 men while Abner lost 360 men.
David’s army is victorious.
And let’s take a peek at the next chapter, chapter 3 verse 1.
The war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time. David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.
Although the civil war goes on, the house of Saul becomes weaker and weaker.
When we look at Abner, he made Ish-Bosheth King just because he was a son of Saul.
For Abner, it didn’t really matter who was King, because he was the puppeteer. Ish-Bosheth was just the puppet. Although Abner knew that David was anointed first by Samuel, really by God, and then anointed again by the elders of Judah, Abner went against the words of God.
그러나 아사헬의 집요함은 멈추지 않았습니다.
23절에서 아브넬은 (당위적으로) 아사헬을 죽였습니다.
24절에서는 이제 요압 자신과 그의 다른 형제 아비새가 아브넬을 쫓고 있습니다.
28절에서 아브넬은 휴전을 선언합니다. 알았어 그만하자! 더 이상은 없어!
그리고 아브넬의 군대는 마하나임으로 돌아가고 요압과 그의 부하들은 헤브론으로 돌아갑니다.
우리는 다윗이 20명을 잃은 반면 아브넬이 360명을 잃은 이 내전의 결과를 봅니다.
다윗의 군대가 승리한 것입니다.
그리고 다음 장인 3장 1절을 보겠습니다.
사울의 집과 다윗의 집 사이에 전쟁이 오래 지속되었습니다. 다윗은 점점 강해지고 사울의 집은 점점 약해졌습니다.
내란은 계속되지만 사울의 집은 점점 약해집니다.
아브넬은 사울의 아들이라는 이유만으로 이스보셋을 왕으로 삼았습니다.
아브넬은 꼭두각시를 조종하는 사람이었기 때문에 누가 왕인지는 중요하지 않았습니다. 이스보셋은 단지 꼭두각시였습니다. 아브넬은 다윗이 처음에 사무엘에게 기름부음을 받았고 참으로 하나님께로부터 기름부음을 받았고 유다 장로들에게서 다시 기름부음을 받았음을 알았으나 그는 하나님의 말씀을 거역하였습니다.
Pastor Francis Chan said this about going against the words of God.
"When we pursue our own desires and ignore God's commands, we create chaos in our lives. We miss out on the joy and peace that come from following Him, and we may even suffer the consequences of our disobedience."
Because Abner went against God’s command, God’s anointing, there was chaos in his life. And due to that chaos, Abner and the house of Saul suffered even more.
We go into so many battles and so many wars that we cannot win. We try to do these things without God. We don’t listen for His voice. Even if we do hear His voice, we try to ignore it.
When you follow God’s words, God’s commands, there will be joy, there will be peace, and there will be blessing. Sometimes, it may seem like God is not there. Let us pray even harder. Let us read the bible even harder. And when you do these things, when you make God your #1 priority, God will answer your prayers. I hope that this morning you will rededicate your life to God, instead of making the world your priority, let’s make God your priority. Let’s not be persistent in the wrong things like Asahel. Let us listen for the voice of God and obey His words.

아브넬이 하나님의 명령, 하나님의 기름 부으심을 어겼기 때문에 그의 삶에 혼란이 있었습니다. 그리고 그 혼란으로 인해 아브넬과 사울의 집은 더욱 고통을 당했습니다.
우리는 이길 수 없는 수많은 전투와 전쟁에 참전합니다. 우리는 하나님 없이 어떤 일을 하려고 합니다. 우리는 그분의 음성을 듣지 않습니다. 우리는 그분의 음성을 들어도 무시하려고 합니다.
하나님의 말씀, 하나님의 계명을 따를 때 기쁨이 있고 평안이 있고 축복이 있습니다. 때로는 하나님이 없는 것처럼 보일 수도 있습니다. 더욱 열심히 기도합시다. 성경을 더 열심히 읽읍시다. 그리고 이런 일을 할 때, 하나님을 최우선으로 삼을 때, 하나님은 여러분의 기도에 응답하실 것입니다. 저는 오늘 이 아침 성도님이 당신의 삶을 하나님께 다시 바치기를 바랍니다. 아사헬과 같이 그릇된 일을 고집하지 맙시다. 하나님의 음성을 듣고 그 말씀에 순종합시다.
