1 In the course of time, David inquired of the Lord. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked.
The Lord said, “Go up.”
David asked, “Where shall I go?”
“To Hebron,” the Lord answered.
2:2 다윗이 그의 두 아내 이스르엘 여인 아히노암과 갈멜 사람 나발의 아내였던 아비가일을 데리고 그리로 올라갈 때에
2 So David went up there with his two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel.
2:3 또 자기와 함께 한 추종자들과 그들의 가족들을 다윗이 다 데리고 올라가서 헤브론 각 성읍에 살게 하니라
3 David also took the men who were with him, each with his family, and they settled in Hebron and its towns.
2:4 유다 사람들이 와서 거기서 다윗에게 기름을 부어 유다 족속의 왕으로 삼았더라 어떤 사람이 다윗에게 말하여 이르되 사울을 장사한 사람은 길르앗 야베스 사람들이니이다 하매
4 Then the men of Judah came to Hebron, and there they anointed David king over the tribe of Judah.
When David was told that it was the men from Jabesh Gilead who had buried Saul,
2:5 다윗이 길르앗 야베스 사람들에게 전령들을 보내 그들에게 이르되 너희가 너희 주 사울에게 이처럼 은혜를 베풀어 그를 장사하였으니 여호와께 복을 받을지어다
5 he sent messengers to them to say to them, “The Lord bless you for showing this kindness to Saul your master by burying him.
2:6 너희가 이 일을 하였으니 이제 여호와께서 은혜와 진리로 너희에게 베푸시기를 원하고 나도 이 선한 일을 너희에게 갚으리니
6 May the Lord now show you kindness and faithfulness, and I too will show you the same favor because you have done this.
2:7 이제 너희는 손을 강하게 하고 담대히 할지어다 너희 주 사울이 죽었고 또 유다 족속이 내게 기름을 부어 그들의 왕으로 삼았음이니라 하니라
7 Now then, be strong and brave, for Saul your master is dead, and the people of Judah have anointed me king over them.”
2:8 사울의 군사령관 넬의 아들 아브넬이 이미 사울의 아들 이스보셋을 데리고 마하나임으로 건너가
8 Meanwhile, Abner son of Ner, the commander of Saul’s army, had taken Ish-Bosheth son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.
2:9 길르앗과 아술과 이스르엘과 에브라임과 베냐민과 온 이스라엘의 왕으로 삼았더라
9 He made him king over Gilead, Ashuri and Jezreel, and also over Ephraim, Benjamin and all Israel.
2:10 사울의 아들 이스보셋이 이스라엘 왕이 될 때에 나이가 사십 세 이며 주 해 동안 왕위에 있으니라 유다 족속은 다윗을 따르니
10 Ish-Bosheth son of Saul was forty years old when he became king over Israel, and he reigned two years. The tribe of Judah, however, remained loyal to David.
2:11 다윗이 헤브론에서 유다 족속의 왕이 된 날 수는 칠 년 육 개월이더라
11 The length of time David was king in Hebron over Judah was seven years and six months.
"믿음은 때로는 전체 계단을 보지 못해도 첫걸음을 내딛는 것이다" 라는 문장은 Martin Luther King Jr.가 말씀 하신 것입니다. 때로 우리는 전체 계단을 보지 못할 때가 있습니다. 때로는 우리의 인생이 어디로 향할지 모를 때가 있습니다. 그러나 믿음이란 때로는 알 수 없는 곳으로 첫걸음을 내딛는 것입니다. 그 첫걸음을 내딛으면, 하나님은 항상 신실하시다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 왜냐하면 하나님의 시간은 항상 완벽하기 때문입니다.
저는 청소년 사역을 약 4 년 반 정도 했습니다. 작년 8 월에는 청년과 EM 을 맡게 되었습니다. 청소년 사역 때, 청년 수는 종종 변동됐습니다. 25 명에서 5 명까지 왔다갔다 했습니다. 청년 사역을 맡게 될 때는 5~6 명 정도만 있었습니다. 그러나 2 주만에 그 수가 10 명으로 늘어났고, 계속 늘어나고 있습니다. 이제는 약 20 명의 청년들이 등록되어 있습니다. 할렐루야! 제가 너무 멋지거나 잘 생겨서 우리 교회로 왔나요? 제가 말을 잘하고 설교를 잘 해서 오는 건가요? 그것도 있겠지만, 모든 것은 하나님의 은혜입니다. 왜냐하면 하나님의 시간은 항상 완벽하기 때문입니다. 다윗도 하나님의 시간을 믿었습니다.
다른 학자들은 사울에게서 도망하는 기간이 얼마나 되는지에 대해 다양한 생각을 하고있습니다. 대부분은 다윗은 8 년 동안 도망다녔다고 말합니다. 이것을 생각해보세요. 8 년 동안 사울에게서 쫓겨다니고 몇 번은 사울을 죽일 기회가 있었습니다. 그러나 이 모든 시간을 견뎌내고,왕이 될 수 있었습니다. 결국 사무엘에게 기름 부음을 받은 지는 거의 20 년이 지났습니다. 그가 어떤 기분이었을까요? 행복하고, 쫓겨다니지 않아서 안심했을 것입니다. 또한 축복받은 느낌도 들었을 것입니다.
오늘의 본문에서 다윗이 처음으로 한 일은 하나님을 구하는 것이었습니다. 사무엘상에서 다윗은 항상 하나님의 뜻을 구했습니다. 그는 자신의 개인적인 계획만 가지고 가는 것이 아니라, 항상 하나님을 그의 계획에 포함시키고자 했습니다. 그래서 다윗은 유다 지방으로 돌아가는 것이 이제 시기가 되었는지 물었습니다. 그러나 이 문제는 다윗에게 개인적으로 좀 힘든 문제였습니다. 다윗은 사울이 죽은 후 곧바로 돌아가는 것을 원하지 않았습니다. 그렇게 되면 사람들은 다윗이 사울이 죽어서 돌아온 것이라고 말할 것이었습니다. 그는 사람들이 자신을 어떻게 생각하는지에 대해 과도하게 걱정하지는 않았지만, 자신에 대한 사람들의 시선은 신경쓰였습니다. 다윗은 오랫동안 왕이 되기를 기다렸지만, 그는 여전히 하나님을 찾고자 했습니다. 하나님께 물어보니 헤브론으로 가라고 하셨으므로, 다윗은 가족과 군대와 함께 헤브론으로 갔습니다.
4 절을 보면 “유다 사람들이 와서 거기서 다윗에게 기름을 부어 유다 족속의 왕으로 삼았더라 어떤 사람이 다윗에게 말하여 이르되 사울을 장사한 사람은 길르앗 야베스 사람들이니이다 하매”라고 기록되어 있습니다. 다윗은 그저 스스로 왕이 된 것이 아니라, 유다의 장로들이 다윗을 왕으로 기름을 붓기 위해 찾아왔습니다. 그는 어째서 두 번째로 기름을 받았을까요? 그 이유는 다윗이 양치기로서 처음 기름을 받았을 때는 비공개적인 행사였기 때문입니다. 오늘의 기름 부음은 더욱 공개적이었으며, 다윗의 왕으로서의 지위를 확인하는 자리였습니다. 또한, 이것은 다른 이들이 다윗을 위해 기도할 수 있는 시간이기도 했습니다. 예를 들어, 왜 우리는 세례식을 공개적으로 진행할까요? 우리는 그들의 믿음을 위해서 기도할 수 있도록 공개적으로 세례식을 진행합니다. 그래서 그들은 다윗이 올바른 왕임을 알리고, 동시에 다윗을 위해서 기도로 이어 나갈 수 있도록 했습니다.
하지만 그가 다음 왕으로 선출되는 동안 어떤 일이 벌어졌나요?
사울의 경호원이자 사울의 친척인 아브넬은 8 절에서 사울의 아들 이스보셋을 왕으로 삼아다고 합니다. 그리고 유다 지파를 다스리고 있던 다윗은 기다려야 했습니다. 그는 이스보셋의 2 년간을 더 기다렸고 Finally 이스라엘 전체를 다스릴 수 있게 되었습니다. 다윗은 왕이 되기까지 매우 오랜 시간을 기다렸습니다. 다윗은 많은 일을 겪었습니다. 그는 왕이 되기 위해 22 년을 기다렸습니다.
여기에서, 저는 회개하게 되었습니다. 기도할 때, 기도응답이 들리지 않을 때 우리는 어떻게 해야 할까요? 아마도 같은 기도 제목을 일주일, 한 달, 혹은 일 년간 반복적으로 기도할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 22 년동아 똑같은 기도제목 가지고 기도를 할 수 있을까요? 한 가지 주제에 대해 일주일 내내 기도하는 것조차 어렵습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 우리의 기도에 응답하실 것입니다. 아멘.
제 어머니는 항상 기도를 많이 하셨습니다. 새벽예배를 하상 참석 하셔서 기도를 하셨습니다. 제가 교회에 가지 않았던 시기가 있었을 때도, 언제나 제 어머니는 저를 위해 기도를 하셨습니다. 지금 제가 전도사가 되어 설교를 하는 것과 신학대학원에서 석사과정을 마무리하는 것은 모두 제 어머니의 기도 덕분이라고 할 수 있습니다. 그러나 몇 년 전, 전도사가 되기로 결심했다는 소식을 어머니께 전하자, 살짝 기도를 너무 많이 했나 하는 후회의 눈빛이 살짝 보였습니다. 이건 웃자고 하는 얘기고요 아무튼 기도를 많이 하셨습니다.
제 아버지도 교회에 참석했었지만, 담배와 술을 엄청 좋아하셨습니다. 제 어머니는 이것을 위해서 30 년 가까이 기도해왔었습니다. 제가 12-13 살 때, 제 아버지가 술과 담배를 끊기를 기도하라는 말씀을 듣곤 했습니다. 어느 날, 제 아버지는 뇌졸중을 겪었습니다. 의사들은 더 이상 담배와 술을 마시지 말아야 한다고 말했습니다. 제 어머니가 이렇게 하나님께 기도했을 때, 이게 원하는 답이였을까요? 아마도 그렇지 않을 것입니다. 제 아버지는 항상 영어를 잘하셨는데, 지금은 거의 영어를 할 수 없습니다. 그리고 예전보다 말이 적어졌습니다. 하나님이 이렇게 선택한 이유는 무엇일까요? 아마도 하나님은 제 아버지가 얼마나 고집스러운 사람인지 알고 있었기 때문일 것입니다. 제 아버지가 이런 일이 일어난 뒤에야 술과 담배를 끊게 된 것이죠.
가끔은 우리가 기도한 대로 하나님이 대답해 주기를 원할 때도 있겠지만, 하나님이 우리 기도에 대한 응답은 언제나 하나님의 뜻 God’s timing 으로 이루어진다는 것을 잊지 말아야 합니다. 오늘 아침에도, 하나님의 timing 을 믿으며 기도할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 그러므로 오늘도 인내심을 가지고 기도합시다.
우리가 선을 행하되 낙심하지 말찌니 피곤하지 아니하면 때가 이르매 거두리라
(갈라디아서 6:9)
우리가 기도에서 포기하지 않고, 주님의 뜻과 God’s timing 을 믿는다면, 주님의 응답을 항상 받으실 줄 믿습니다. 아멘.
Martin Luther King Jr said this. "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase." Sometimes, we don’t see the whole staircase. Sometimes we don’t know where our lives will take us. But faith is taking that first step sometimes into the unknown. And when we take that first step, God will be faithful. Because God’s timing is always perfect. I spent about four and a half years in Youth ministry. And last August, I took over Young Adults and EM. During my time in youth ministry, the number of the young adults would often fluctuate. It was anywhere between 25 and 5. When I was getting ready to take over the young adult ministry, there were maybe 5 or 6 members. However, after two weeks, that number suddenly went to 10. And the number kept going up. Now, there are about 20 young adults who are registered. Hallelujah. Did they start coming because I’m so good looking? Or because I’m so good at speaking? Maybe. But this was all the grace of God. It is because the timing of God is always perfect. And David believed in the timing of God. There are variations from different scholars of the length of time that David was on the run from Saul. Most say that he was on the run for 8 years. Let’s think about this. 8 years being chased by Saul. And he also had a couple chances to kill Saul. But to go through all that time, and finally being able to be king. So all in all, It has been almost 20 years when he was anointed by Samuel that he was going to be king. How do you think he felt? Happy. Relieved that he finally was not being chased anymore. Blessed. Any combination of these emotions.
In today’s scriptures, we see David. And the first thing that he did was that he inquired of the Lord. The main success behind David in 1 Samuel was that he often inquired of the Lord. He didn’t just want to go through with his personal agendas. But he wanted to always include God in his plans. So, David inquired of the Lord asking if it is time for him to go back to his hometown of Judah? And this was a tricky issue for David. David didn’t really want to back right after Saul died. That would have seemed too opportunistic of him. People would talk and say that he only came back because Saul was dead. He wasn’t overly concerned with people’s view of him, but he was concerned about what people would think of him. Although David waited so long to finally become king, he still sought after God. And God told him to go to Hebron, so David went with his family and his army.
And when we look at verse 4, it says, “Then the men of Judah came to Hebron, and there they anointed David king over the tribe of Judah.”
David didn’t just make himself king, but elders of Judah came to David to anoint him as the King.
And why was he anointed a second time? Because first time when he was anointed as a shepherd, it was just a private event. Today’s anointing was more public. It was an affirmation to confirm his status as a rightful king. It was also a time when others would be able to pray for David. For example, why do we have baptism publicly? Why not just have baptism at our personal homes? We do baptisms publicly so that the church would be able to recognize them and pray for them. So, they wanted to let others know that David is the rightful King, but they also wanted to keep David in their prayers.
But as he is being anointed as the next king, what happens on the other side. Abner, who was Saul’s bodyguard, and a relative of Saul, in verse 8 made Ish-Bosheth, son of Saul, as King. And reigned for two years as King of Israel while David was ruling the tribe of Judah.
David had to wait even more. He waited two more years of Ish-Bosheth and finally was able to rule all of Israel.
David waited so long to be King. He went through so much adversity, so many obstacles. He waited around 22 years to be the rightful king.
Here, I fell into repentance. When we pray, what do we do when our prayers seem to not be answered? Maybe you pray for a week, a month, a year of the same prayer request. But 22 years to wait for God’s timing and answer? Praying on one topic for a whole week is hard enough. But God will answer your prayer. Amen.
My mom has always been a prayer warrior. She always went to early morning service to pray. There was a time in my life when I wasn’t going to church. And my mom would continue to pray for me. Me standing up here, giving a message, and going to seminary to finish up my Master of Divinity? It is all the grace of God that I received through my mom. But when I told her a couple years ago that I was going to become a pastor, I can see it in her eyes that maybe she prayed too much for me. Anyways, my dad also attended church, but he was an avid smoker and drinker. My mom prayed about this for probably 30 years. I remember when I was 12 or 13 to keep praying for my dad so that he would stop drinking and smoking. One day he got a stroke. And the doctors would go on to tell him that he cannot smoke or drink anymore. Is this how my mom envisioned God would answer her prayer? Probably not. My dad was always good at English because he worked as the Marketing Director of the US KIA headquarters for many years. However now, he doesn’t really speak English. He started speaking much less than before. Why did God choose this? Probably because God knew how stubborn my dad was and that he would only listen if something like this happened.
Although sometimes there are certain ways how we wish God would answer our prayers, God doesn’t always answer our prayers our way. There is always God’s way and God’s timing. I hope that this morning, you will be able to fully trust in God’s timing. So pray with perseverance today.
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up (Galatians 6:9)
When we do not give up in prayer, when we believe in the timing of our Lord, we WILL reap a harvest. Amen
