Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by an Impure Spirit

14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

16 “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.

17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”

“From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”

24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”

26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.”

We can say two things about the generation that we live in. First, it is a faithless generation. According to a survey done by the American National Family Life in Dec 2021, the percentage of people who believe in any religion of each generation has been on a decline. For baby boomers (born 1946-1964), 18% declared themselves as religiously unaffiliated. For generation X (born 1965-1980), 25% declared themselves as religiously unaffiliated. For millennials (born 1981-1996), 29% declared themselves as religiously unaffiliated. For Generation Z (born 1997-2013), 34% declared themselves as religiously unaffiliated. And now we have Generation Alpha (born 2010-2024). This is expected to be the largest generation in history at more than 2 billion people. However, this generation is also the least religious. Because Generation Alpha is generally the children of Millennials, the first generation who left religion and are not coming back. I am so thankful that new youth and young adults are continuing to come to our church. But this generation needs some serious prayer. Second, it is an uneasy anxious generation. Before Covid, it would be OK for us to come to church a little sick. I remember during the winter retreat of 2019 right before Covid, half the students were sick with a cold. But back then it was OK. Now, it is not OK. And sometimes we don’t know if we have a cold, the flu, or Covid. So, we are living in a faithless, uneasy, anxious, generation.

Zhong You, a disciple of Confucius, asked Confucius, “For a country to be able to stand firm, what kind of conditions must be met? Confucius answered, “you need a strong army, an abundance of food, and faith”. Zhong You asked again. What if you had to take one out. I would remove the army. Zhong You asked again. What if you had to take another one out. “I would remove the abundance of food but you cannot remove faith.”

Let me ask you. Do you have faith? As Christians, in this faithless generation, we need to wake up from our slumber. For our us, the church to stand firm, we need faith. Through today’s scriptures, let us see what God is teaching us about faith.

A man brought his son who had a mute and deaf spirit and suffered from seizures. The disciples were unable to cast out the spirit. In verse 19, Jesus called his disciples “You unbelieving generation”. In some other versions, Jesus calls them “faithless generation” or “faithless people”.

So Jesus tells the man to bring his son to him. In Verse 20, “When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.” This is the fourth time that we have encountered demons in the book of Mark. And each time the demons are convulsing at their mouths and falling to the ground because they understand the power of Jesus.

As the man is pleading for Jesus to heal his son, in verse 23, Jesus said “Everything is possible for one who believes” And in verse 24, the man said “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.” When you hear this, it might sound confusing. How can you believe and not believe at the same time?

When this man first brought his son to Jesus’ disciples, they couldn’t drive the demons out. The man was already feeling a little doubt when he came to Jesus. So, in a sense, the man was saying, “My faith is far from perfect. I may not have enough faith. If my faith is not enough, please help me to have enough! In the Contemporary English Version (CEV) of the bible, verse 24 says, “I do have faith! Please help me to have even more.”

In verse 25, Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and it came out of the boy, causing him to appear dead. However, Jesus took him by the hand, and the boy arose. When the disciples asked why they couldn't cast out the spirit, Jesus explained that such demons could only be driven out by prayer.

Jesus mentioned that we need to pray. But the real question is how we should pray.

David Platt said this regarding prayer:

“Spiritual awakening started in S. Korea, not when the country started praying, but when church leaders started praying, like really praying,” Platt said, “crying out to God all night in prayer, leading their churches to do the same.”

“When is the last time we gathered together for church on Sundays and crowds of people fell on their faces weeping for hidden sin in our midst, crying out for God’s mercy upon us?” Platt said. “What kind of church culture have we created where we — pastors, churches, members alike — are content to go week after week after week in church, watch what happens on the stage, or worship and perform there, and then move on with their lives as normal?”

We need to really really pray. We need to cry out to God. This generation is faithless because this generation forgot about the need to pray. This is why us being the older generation, the adult generation, we need to pray for this next generation. We need to pray that they may come back to the Lord. Do you have sons, or daughters or family members who need to come back to the Lord. Let us pray for them that they may come back to the Lord. When we pray with perseverance, God will move mountains and split the red seas in our lives.
