여덟째 재앙 : 메뚜기가 땅을 덮다
1 여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 바로에게로 들어가라 내가 그의 마음과 그의 신하들의 마음을 완강하게 함은 나의 표징을 그들 중에 보이기 위함이며
2 네게 내가 애굽에서 행한 일들 곧 내가 그들 가운데에서 행한 표징을 네 아들과 네 자손의 귀에 전하기 위함이라 너희는 내가 여호와인 줄을 알리라
3 모세와 아론이 바로에게 들어가서 그에게 이르되 히브리 사람의 하나님 여호와께서 말씀하시기를 네가 어느 때까지 내 앞에 겸비하지 아니하겠느냐 내 백성을 보내라 그들이 나를 섬길 것이라
4 네가 만일 내 백성 보내기를 거절하면 내일 내가 메뚜기를 네 경내에 들어가게 하리니
5 메뚜기가 지면을 덮어서 사람이 땅을 볼 수 없을 것이라 메뚜기가 네게 남은 그것 곧 우박을 면하고 남은 것을 먹으며 너희를 위하여 들에서 자라나는 모든 나무를 먹을 것이며
6 또 네 집들과 네 모든 신하의 집들과 모든 애굽 사람의 집들에 가득하리니 이는 네 아버지와 네 조상이 이 땅에 있었던 그 날로부터 오늘까지 보지 못하였던 것이리라 하셨다 하고 돌이켜 바로에게서 나오니
7 바로의 신하들이 그에게 말하되 어느 때까지 이 사람이 우리의 함정이 되리이까 그 사람들을 보내어 그들의 하나님 여호와를 섬기게 하소서 왕은 아직도 애굽이 망한 줄을 알지 못하시나이까 하고
8 모세와 아론을 바로에게로 다시 데려오니 바로가 그들에게 이르되 가서 너희의 하나님 여호와를 섬기라 갈 자는 누구 누구냐
9 모세가 이르되 우리가 여호와 앞에 절기를 지킬 것인즉 우리가 남녀 노소와 양과 소를 데리고 가겠나이다
10 바로가 그들에게 이르되 내가 너희와 너희의 어린 아이들을 보내면 여호와가 너희와 함께 함과 같으니라 보라 그것이 너희에게는 나쁜 것이니라
11 그렇게 하지 말고 너희 장정만 가서 여호와를 섬기라 이것이 너희가 구하는 바니라 이에 그들이 바로 앞에서 쫓겨나니라
12 여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 애굽 땅 위에 네 손을 내밀어 메뚜기를 애굽 땅에 올라오게 하여 우박에 상하지 아니한 밭의 모든 채소를 먹게 하라
13 모세가 애굽 땅 위에 그 지팡이를 들매 여호와께서 동풍을 일으켜 온 낮과 온 밤에 불게 하시니 아침이 되매 동풍이 메뚜기를 불어 들인지라
14 메뚜기가 애굽 온 땅에 이르러 그 사방에 내리매 그 피해가 심하니 이런 메뚜기는 전에도 없었고 후에도 없을 것이라
15 메뚜기가 온 땅을 덮어 땅이 어둡게 되었으며 메뚜기가 우박에 상하지 아니한 밭의 채소와 나무 열매를 다 먹었으므로 애굽 온 땅에서 나무나 밭의 채소나 푸른 것은 남지 아니하였더라
16 바로가 모세와 아론을 급히 불러 이르되 내가 너희의 하나님 여호와와 너희에게 죄를 지었으니
17 바라건대 이번만 나의 죄를 용서하고 너희의 하나님 여호와께 구하여 이 죽음만은 내게서 떠나게 하라
18 그가 바로에게서 나가서 여호와께 구하매
19 여호와께서 돌이켜 강렬한 서풍을 불게 하사 메뚜기를 홍해에 몰아넣으시니 애굽 온 땅에 메뚜기가 하나도 남지 아니하니라
20 그러나 여호와께서 바로의 마음을 완악하게 하셨으므로 이스라엘 자손을 보내지 아니하였더라
하나님을 밎는 자나 믿지 않는 자나 공통적으로 궁금해 하는 것이 있습니다. 그것은 왜 하나님은 악을 내버려 두시는 것일까 입니다. 바로나 바로와 같은 독재자 김정은을 왜 내버려 두실까요?
성경은 다음과 같이 기록하고 있습니다.
내가 너를 세웠음은 나의 능력을 네게 보이고
내 이름이 온 천하에 전파되게 하려 하였음이니라 (출 9:16)이미 살펴 보았던 말씀입니다. 오늘 본문에서도 나의 표징(오트)을 그들(애굽) 중에 보이기 위함(1) 이라고 말씀하십니다. 하나님의 하나님 되심(Sign)을 나타내기 위해서 바로를 부정적인 면에서 사용하시는 것이라고 들었습니다. 그래서 교만한 마음, 완강한 마음 그대로 내버려 두시는 것입니다.
그런데 오늘 재앙의 목적은 특이한 점 하나가 더 추가됩니다. 애굽 사람, 바로만을 위한 표징이 아닌 것입니다. 2절을 보면 네 아들과 네 자손의 귀에 전하기 위함이라 너희는 내가 여호와인 줄을 알리라 라고 말씀 하십니다. 표징(오트, Sign)은 이스라엘의 Next Generation 을 위한 것입니다.
8번째 재앙이 이르러서 말씀 하시지만, 사실 모든 재앙/이적의 Goal은 마지막 장자의 재앙을 향하고 있습니다. 그리고 그 모든 것이 대대손손, 자자손손 이어지고 전해질 이스라엘 공동체의 가장 큰 공통된 경험인 출애굽이고 유월절입니다. 마치 대한민국 국민이면 직접 겪지는 않았지만, 일제치하 & 6.25 하면 치를 떠는 것과 같은 것입니다. 민족 공동체가 다함께 공유하는 경험이고, 추억이자 아픈 역사입니다.
오늘 본문인 8번째 재앙/이적은 이러한 두 가지 바로와 이집트에 하나님의 표징을 보이고, 또한 이스라엘 다음세대에게도 하나님의 표징을 보이시기 위함이라는 전제를 놓고 살펴보겠습니다.
애굽이 망한 줄을 알지 못하시나이까?
이제 하나님은 바로에게 8번째 재앙을 경고하십니다. 우박의 재앙을 피해 남은, 비빌 언덕인 밀/쌀보리, 나무들을 메뚜기 떼가 내일 먹어 치울 것입니다. 메뚜기 떼는 종종 목격되는 재해이지만, 이번 메뚜기 떼는 본 적이 없는 역대급(6)일 것입니다. 모세와 아론은 하나님의 경고를 전한 후 뒤도 돌아보지 않고 왕궁을 돌이켜(6b) 나옵니다.
그러자 바로의 신하들이 이구동성으로 난리입니다. 끝까지 고집을 부리는 바로를 더 이상 못 봐줍니다. 바로는 정치적 기반을 잃고 있습니다. 아니 어쩌면 바로도 속으로는 잘 됐다고 생각했을 수도 있습니다.
신하들이 외침이 촌철살인의 외침입니다. 왕은 아직도 애굽이 망한 줄을 알지 못하시나이까(7b) 사람이 한 부분만 집중하다 보면 상황을 객관적으로 판단하지 못하는 경우가 발생합니다. 이정도 재앙을 당하고 백성들과 신하들이 고통을 당하면 빨리 하나님 앞에 항복해야 하는데 끝까지 바로는 고집을 부리고 있습니다.
신하들은 어느 때까지 이 사람이 우리의 함정이 되리이까 라고 책망하고, 원망합니다. 신하들은 이제 자신들의 처참한 모습을 보기 시작한 것입니다. 우리는 종종 실수하는 것이 성경을 읽고 적용하면서 우리 자신을 늘 주인공에 대비한다는 사실입니다. 무슨 말이냐 하면 오늘 같은 본문에서 주로 묵상을 하면 모세나 아론에게 내 자신이나 자녀를 대입합니다. 그래서 모세 같은 담대함, 능력 주시기를 믿고 기도합니다. 참 귀한 해석입니다. 하지만 거기서 멈추면 반밖에 얻지 못한 것입니다.
더 많은 부분은 바로와 같은 인물에 우리 자신을 대비해야 합니다. 사실 우리는 모세보다는 바로 쪽에 가깝습니다. 바로처럼 큰 권력이 없으니 잘 드러나지는 않지만, 인간 본질적으로 우리는 바로와 신하들과 같은 모습이 더 많음을 부정할 수 없습니다. 무지하고, 고집스럽고, 잘못을 알지 못합니다. 그리고 그러한 자신의 모습조차 모릅니다. 듣기 좋은 소리만 듣고 싶어하고, 듣기 싫은 소리에는 바로 귀를 닫습니다.
신약에서 제자들이 손을 씻지 않고 식사하는 것을 보고 정죄하며 예수께 항변하는 바리새인들에게
속에서 곧 사람의 마음에서 나오는 것은 악한 생각 곧 음란과 도둑질과 살인과
간음과 탐욕과 악독과 속임과 음탕과 질투와 비방과 교만과 우매함이니
이 모든 악한 것이 다 속에서 나와서 사람을 더럽게 하느니라 (막 7:21-23)비단 저것이 바리새인들만의 문제라고 생각하십니까? 이것은 인간 본질에 대한 말씀입니다. 제자들은 깨끗한가요? 그러면 왜 사도 바울은 의인은 없나니 하나도 없으며(롬 3:10) 라고 외쳤을까요?
내가 바로입니다! 내가 이집트입니다! 그리고 이집트가 쫄딱 망한 줄을 깨달아야 합니다.
그래야 그 때부터 무엇인가를 구하고 찾게 됩니다. 무엇을 구해야 할까요? 은혜를 구해야 합니다.
전세계인들이 알아야 합니다. 바이러스, 지구환경문제, 인종차별, 전쟁, 동성애… 인류는 망해가고 있습니다. 아니 이미 망했습니다. 이것을 보고 아직도 깨닫지 못하면 멍청한 바로가 되는 것입니다.
내 자신의 현 상황을 면밀하게 들여다보고 있습니까? 탄식하고 있나요? 눈이 있는 자는 보라고 말씀하십니다. 눈에 이물질이 들어가서 앞을 볼 수 없을 때 볼 수 있는 방법은 2가지입니다.
눈물을 흘려야 합니다. 울어야 합니다. 한탄의 눈물, 회개의 눈물, 돌이킴의 눈물 말입니다.
만일 스스로 눈물이 나오지 않으면 안약을 사서 발라서라도 울어야 합니다.
네가 말하기를 나는 부자라 부요하여 부족한 것이 없다 하나 네 곤고한 것과 가련한 것과 가난한 것과 눈 먼 것과 벌거벗은 것을 알지 못하는도다 내가 너를 권하노니 내게서 불로 연단한 금을 사서 부요하게 하고 흰 옷을 사서 입어 벌거벗은 수치를 보이지 않게 하고 안약을 사서 눈에 발라 보게 하라 (계 3:17-18)여기서 안약은 성령의 안약을 의미합니다. 금, 흰 옷, 안약 모두 마찬가지 입니다. 믿음, 회개, 은혜의 메타포입니다. 겉으로 보이는 상태가 다가 아닙니다. 겉은 멀쩡해도 이미 세상 인류는 망해가고 있습니다.
이 세상이 고도의 문명을 누리는 것 같고, 어느 때보다 발달한 것 같지만 사실은 이집트와 같은 운명입니다.
너 자신을 알라 (γνῶθι σεαυτόν, 그노티 세아우톤)
고대 그리스의 유명한 격언으로, 그리스의 여행담 작가인 파우사니아스에 따르면 델포이의 아폴론 신전의 프로나오스(앞마당)에 새겨져 있던 글귀입니다. 소크라테스가 한 말로 전해집니다. 사람들이 자신을 현자라고 일컫지만 자신은 결코 똑똑한 사람이 아님을 알고 있었습니다. 그래서 현자가 누구인지 궁금했던 소크라테스는 똑똑하다는 사람들을 모두 만나서 대화를 나눕니다. 그 결과 그들은 자신이 모른다는 것조차 모르고 있다는 사실을 발견합니다. 소크라테스는 스스로가 모른다는 사실을 알고 있기에 사람들이 말하는 것처럼 본인이 가장 현자가 맞았다고 말하며 앞의 명언을 남긴 것입니다.
내 자신을 알면, 내가 바로라는 것을 알면, 내가 바리새인인 것을 알며 그 다음에는 무엇을 구할까요?
바로 은혜를 진실하게 구하게 됩니다. 그 때 구원의 빛이 들어오는 것입니다.
여호와를 섬기러 갈 자 누구냐?
신하들의 충언에 힘입어 모세와 아론을 다시 부른 바로는 협상을 합니다. 물론 협상은 결렬되고, 결국 메뚜기 재앙을 당한 후에서야 겨우 살려달라고 부탁하여 위기 모면합니다. 하지만 다시 마음이 완강하여 이스라엘 백성을 보내지 않는다는 것이 오늘 본문의 내용입니다.
메뚜기 재앙은 4차 산업혁명 시대인 지금도 엄청난 재앙입니다. 송병현 교수에 의하면 중동지역 메뚜기 떼는 보통 1km2 당 5000만 마리가 있으며, 하루에 10만 톤의 채소/풀을 먹어 치운다고 합니다.
메뚜기 재앙은 지난 주에 혼났던 신들이 또 혼나는 재앙입니다. 생명의 여신 이시스, 곡물을 보호신 세트 등, 문제는 이 재앙은 순식간에 모든 것을 초토화 시킨다는 것입니다.
바로는 다급하여 모세에게 부탁을 합니다. 모세는 또 속을 것을 알지만, 기도하자. 하나님의 능력이 나타납니다. 이 모든 재앙은 하나님만이 하나님이심을 표징하는 이적인 것입니다.
여호와를 섬기러 갈 자는 누구 누구냐(8b) 모세에게 바로가 던지는 질문입니다. 모세가 남녀노소 모든 짐승이라고 답합니다. 돌아오지 않겠다는 것(9)입니다. 알아들은 바로는 10절로 답하고 보내기를 거부합니다. 존 더햄은 바로의 답변을 내가 너희의 요구를 들어주게 되면, 여호와께서 정녕 너희와 함께 있도록 만들어 줄 것이다 라고 해석합니다. 이것은 함께 하시는 여호와 하나님의 이름에 대한 조롱 섞인 거절입니다. 쉽게 표현하면 내가 너희 아이들까지 보내면, 하나님이 진짜로 너희와 함께 하는 셈이다. 누구 좋으라고! 입니다. 보라 그것이 너희에게는 나쁜 것이니라 의미는 직역하자면 악이 너희 얼굴 앞에 있다 입니다. 낯짝도 두껍다! 너희의 계획이 악하다 는 말인 것입니다.
지금 바로와 모세(하나님)는 무엇을 하고 있습니까? 바로 다음세대인 어린 아이들을 놓고 담판을 벌이고 있습니다. 사탄은 오늘 우리에게 물어봅니다. 여호와를 섬기러 갈 자는 누구 누구냐? 그 때 모세가 어른만 예배하겠다고 했다면, 과연 출애굽이 일어났을까요? 오늘 사탄은 얼마든지 우리에게 하나님을 예배 하라고 허락합니다. 단! 어른만!
다음 세대, 소와 양, 물질은 빼고… 그냥 너희 기성 세대만 예배하는 형식만 취하라고 인심 씁니다. 앞서 8번째 재앙의 목적을 하나님은 말씀 하셨습니다. 하나님의 표징은 자자손손 전하기 위함입니다. 하나님의 구속사역의 역사를 대대로 전하는 것이 모든 재앙, 출애굽, 유월절의 골입니다. 기성세대의 신앙은 너무 중요하지만, 그것이 다음 세대에 전승되지 않는다면 아무 소용없습니다. 그런 점에서 다음 세대를 두고 치열한 영적인 전쟁이 벌어지고 있는 것입니다. 무엇보다 다음 세대에게 예배를 가르쳐야 합니다. 그런데 예배는 말로만 하는 것이 아닙니다. 보여주고, 함께 하며 느끼고 배우는 것입니다.
곰곰이 생각해봅시다. 지금 온 세상에서 벌어지는 일들을…어떻습니까? 우리 지구, 인류가 괜찮겠습니까?
눈이 있는 자는 보아야 합니다. 그것을 보고 깨달은 자만이 “은혜”를 구합니다. 그리고 그 은혜를 누릴 수 있는 유일한 방법이 바로 “예배”입니다. 우리의 구원자이신 진리의 말씀 덩어리, 예수 그리스도와 은혜를 주시는 진리의 영이신 성령의 예배입니다. 코로나 사태로 모든 것이 조심스럽고 두려운 이 때, 사탄이 묻습니다. 여호와를 예배하러 갈 자 누구 누구냐? 어떻게 답하시겠습니까?
The Plague of Locusts
1 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials so that I may perform these signs of mine among them 2 that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the Lord.”
3 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, “This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me. 4 If you refuse to let them go, I will bring locusts into your country tomorrow. 5 They will cover the face of the ground so that it cannot be seen. They will devour what little you have left after the hail, including every tree that is growing in your fields. 6 They will fill your houses and those of all your officials and all the Egyptians—something neither your parents nor your ancestors have ever seen from the day they settled in this land till now.’” Then Moses turned and left Pharaoh.
7 Pharaoh’s officials said to him, “How long will this man be a snare to us? Let the people go, so that they may worship the Lord their God. Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined?”
8 Then Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. “Go, worship the Lord your God,” he said. “But tell me who will be going.”
9 Moses answered, “We will go with our young and our old, with our sons and our daughters, and with our flocks and herds, because we are to celebrate a festival to the Lord.”
10 Pharaoh said, “The Lord be with you—if I let you go, along with your women and children! Clearly you are bent on evil. 11 No! Have only the men go and worship the Lord, since that’s what you have been asking for.” Then Moses and Aaron were driven out of Pharaoh’s presence.
12 And the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over Egypt so that locusts swarm over the land and devour everything growing in the fields, everything left by the hail.”
13 So Moses stretched out his staff over Egypt, and the Lord made an east wind blow across the land all that day and all that night. By morning the wind had brought the locusts; 14 they invaded all Egypt and settled down in every area of the country in great numbers. Never before had there been such a plague of locusts, nor will there ever be again. 15 They covered all the ground until it was black. They devoured all that was left after the hail—everything growing in the fields and the fruit on the trees. Nothing green remained on tree or plant in all the land of Egypt.
16 Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. 17 Now forgive my sin once more and pray to the Lord your God to take this deadly plague away from me.”
18 Moses then left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord. 19 And the Lord changed the wind to a very strong west wind, which caught up the locusts and carried them into the Red Sea.[b] Not a locust was left anywhere in Egypt. 20 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go.
There is a hard question that both the Christians and non-believers have in common. That is “Why does God leave the evil alone?”. Why would God leave Pharaoh or Kim Jong-un, a dictator like Pharaoh, alone?
The Bible says the following:
But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth
(Exodus 9:16)Today's scripture also says I may perform these signs (oth) of mine among them (Egypt) (1).
It is using Pharaoh in a negative way to represent God's sign. That is why He leaves the proud and stubborn hearts alone.
However, the purpose of today's plague adds one more peculiarity. It is not a sign only for the Egyptian or Pharaoh. In verse 2, it says, that you may tell your children and grandchildren ... and that you may know that I am the Lord.”
The miracle (oth, sign) is therefore for Israel's Next Generation.
Not just the 8th plague, but in fact, the goal of all plagues/miracles is headed for the plague (death) of the firstborn. And all of that is the Exodus and the Passover, the greatest common experience of the Israeli community that will be passed down and passed-on from generation to generation. It is as if the young Korean people who did not experience the Japanese occupation & 6/25 directly, yet still tremble with anger when they hear about it. It is an experience shared by the ethnic community, a memory and a painful history.
We will take a look at the 8th plague/miracle in today’s scripture, at the premise of the following two things: I may perform these signs of mine among the Egyptians and Pharaoh & that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I performed my signs.
Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined?
Now God warns Pharaoh of the eighth plague. Tomorrow, the swarms of locusts will eat the remaining wheat/barley and trees left from the plague of hails, Pharaoh's last hope. Although locust swarms are often witnessed, this locust swarm is likely to be unheard of or unseen (6). After giving the warning of God, Moses and Aaron turned around and left the palace without looking back (6b).
Then, Pharaoh's officials panic with one voice. They can no longer leave Pharaoh alone who is stubborn to the end. Pharaoh is losing his political ground. No, maybe Pharaoh also thought it was a good timing.
The shouts of the officials really gave Pharaoh a zinger. Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined? (7b)
When a person concentrates on only one part, there are cases in which he cannot objectively judge the whole situation. If Egypt suffers this much from plagues and the people and officials agonize, they must surrender to God quickly, but Pharaoh is still stubborn in heart.
The officials rebuke and resent, how long will this man be a snare to us? The officials are now starting to see their disastrous ruins.
What we often make mistakes about is the fact that when we read and apply the Bible, we always compare ourselves for the protagonist. What I mean by that is, when we meditate mainly in today's scripture, we substitute ourselves or our children to Moses or Aaron. So, we believe and pray for Moses' boldness and strength. Which is a very valuable interpretation. But if you stop there, you only get half the point.
More importantly, we have to compare ourselves for a person like Pharaoh. In fact, our characteristics are closer to that of Pharaoh’s than Moses. It is not apparent because we do not have great power like Pharaoh did, but in human nature, we cannot deny that we are more like Pharaoh and his officials.
We are all ignorant, stubborn, and unaware of our faults. And we do not even know what we are like. We only want to hear words that sound good to us, and close our ears to sounds that we do not want to hear.
To the Pharisees who condemned and protested Jesus when they saw the disciples eating without washing their hands in the New Testament, Jesus said:
For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”
(Mark 7:21-23)Do you think that is the only problem for the Pharisees? This is a Word about human nature. Are the disciples clean? Then, why did the apostle Paul exclaim, “There is no one righteous, not even one” (Romans 3:10)?
I am Pharaoh! I am Egypt! And we must realize that Egypt is ruined.
Only then will we seek and find something from that point on. What should we ask for? We must seek "Grace".
People all over the world should know. Viruses, global environmental issues, racism, war, homosexuality… Humanity is perishing. No, it is already ruined. If you see this and still don't realize it, you become a foolish Pharaoh.
Are you taking a closer look at your own current situation? Are you mourning? God tells us to see whoever has eyes. There are two ways to see when a foreign object enters our eyes and hence we cannot see.
1. We must shed tears. We have to cry. We must shed tears of sadness, tears of repentance, and tears of conversion.
2. If tears do not come out on our own, we need to buy and apply eye drops in order to cry.
You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’
But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.
I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
(Revelation 3:17-18)Here, the salve means the eye drops of the Holy Spirit. The same goes for gold and white clothes. It is a metaphor of faith, repentance, and grace. Outlook appearance is not everything. Even if the outside seems intact, mankind is already perishing.
Although this world seems to enjoy high degrees of civilization, and it seems to be more advanced than ever before, in fact, it has the same fate as Egypt.
Know Thyself (γνῶθι σεαυτόν, Gnothi Seauton)
A famous ancient Greek proverb, according to the Greek traveler and geographer Pausanias, it was inscribed on the pronaos (front yard) of the temple of Apollo in Delphi. It is conveyed in the words of Socrates. People called him a sage person, but he knew that he was by no means smart. So, wondering who the sage person was, Socrates meets and talks with all the smart people of his age. As a result, he discovered that they do not even know that they know nothing. If we know ourselves, know that we are Pharaoh, know that we are a Pharisee, what would we ask for?
We will sincerely ask for "Grace". That is when the light of salvation comes in.
Who will go serve the Lord?
With the advice of his officials, Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron again to negotiate. Of course, the negotiations break down, and after the plague of locusts, they escape the crisis by asking to be saved. However, it is the content of today's scripture that Pharaoh does not let the Israelites go because he hardens his heart again.
The swarms of locusts is still a huge disaster even in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. According to Professor Byung-Hyun Song, there are usually 50 million locusts per 1km2 in the Middle East, and they eat 100,000 tons of vegetables/grass per day.
The plague of locust is another plague to the Egyptian gods who were scolded last week. Isis, the goddess of life, Seth, the gods protecting the grains, the problem is that this catastrophe destroys everything in an instant.
Pharaoh is urgent and asks Moses a favor. Moses knows he would be deceived again, but when he prays, God's power is revealed. All these plagues are signs that God alone is the only God.
Who will be going to serve the Lord? (8b) This is a question Pharaoh asks Moses. Moses answers that he will go with the young and old, with the sons and daughters, and with flocks and herds. It means that he has no intention of returning (9). As soon as Pharaoh understood it, he replied with verse 10 and refused to send them. John Durham interprets Pharaoh's answer as Thus may the Lord be with you, if ever I let you and your little ones go!
This is a rejection as well as ridiculing the name of the Lord God. In simple terms, If I even send your children, it means that God is really with you. Never!
Clearly you are bent on evil means, literally, evil is before your face. Your plan itself is evil.
What are Pharaoh and Moses (God) doing at this point? They are having a talk about the next generation of young children. Satan asks us today. Who is going to serve the Lord? If Moses said only adults will go and worship, would the Exodus really happen? Today Satan allows us to worship God as much as we wish. Adults only, however!
Leave the next generation, cattle and sheep, and worldly materials… but just take the form of worshiping only for the older generations. God has already said the purpose of the eighth plague. “God's sign” must be passed down to the children and grandchildren. It is the goal of all calamities, the Exodus, and the Passover to convey the history of God's redemptive work from generation to generation. The faith of the older generation is every important, but to no avail unless it is passed on to the next generation. In that sense, a fierce spiritual war is going on for the next generation. Above all, we must teach worship to the next generation. However, worship is not just words. It is about showing, being together, feeling, and learning.
Let us think deeply about it. What is happening all over the world right now? How is it? Would our planet and humanity be okay?
Those who have eyes must see. Only those who see it and realize it seek "Grace".
And the only way to enjoy that “Grace” is through “Worship”. It is the worship of the Word of Truth as our Savior, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth that gives Grace.
At a time when everything is cautious and fearful due to the coronavirus outbreak, Satan asks, Who will go to worship the Lord? And how would you answer?
