모세와 아론이 바로 앞에 서다
1 그 후에 모세와 아론이 바로에게 가서 이르되 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이렇게 말씀하시기를 내 백성을 보내라 그러면 그들이 광야에서 내 앞에 절기를 지킬 것이니라 하셨나이다
2 바로가 이르되 여호와가 누구이기에 내가 그의 목소리를 듣고 이스라엘을 보내겠느냐 나는 여호와를 알지 못하니 이스라엘을 보내지 아니하리라
3 그들이 이르되 히브리인의 하나님이 우리에게 나타나셨은즉 우리가 광야로 사흘길쯤 가서 우리 하나님 여호와께 제사를 드리려 하오니 가도록 허락하소서 여호와께서 전염병이나 칼로 우리를 치실까 두려워하나이다
4 애굽 왕이 그들에게 이르되 모세와 아론아 너희가 어찌하여 백성의 노역을 쉬게 하려느냐 가서 너희의 노역이나 하라
5 바로가 또 이르되 이제 이 땅의 백성이 많아졌거늘 너희가 그들로 노역을 쉬게 하는도다 하고
6 바로가 그 날에 백성의 감독들과 기록원들에게 명령하여 이르되
7 너희는 백성에게 다시는 벽돌에 쓸 짚을 전과 같이 주지 말고 그들이 가서 스스로 짚을 줍게 하라
8 또 그들이 전에 만든 벽돌 수효대로 그들에게 만들게 하고 감하지 말라 그들이 게으르므로 소리 질러 이르기를 우리가 가서 우리 하나님께 제사를 드리자 하나니
9 그 사람들의 노동을 무겁게 함으로 수고롭게 하여 그들로 거짓말을 듣지 않게 하라
10 백성의 감독들과 기록원들이 나가서 백성에게 말하여 이르되 바로가 이렇게 말하기를 내가 너희에게 짚을 주지 아니하리니
11 너희는 짚을 찾을 곳으로 가서 주우라 그러나 너희 일은 조금도 감하지 아니하리라 하셨느니라
12 백성이 애굽 온 땅에 흩어져 곡초 그루터기를 거두어다가 짚을 대신하니
13 감독들이 그들을 독촉하여 이르되 너희는 짚이 있을 때와 같이 그 날의 일을 그 날에 마치라 하며
14 바로의 감독들이 자기들이 세운 바 이스라엘 자손의 기록원들을 때리며 이르되 너희가 어찌하여 어제와 오늘에 만드는 벽돌의 수효를 전과 같이 채우지 아니하였느냐 하니라
오스왈드 챔버스Oswald Chambers는 주님은 나의 최고봉My Utmost for His Highest에서 당황스러운 상황을 맞이하는 자세에 대해서 다음과 같이 설명 합니다.
당혹스러운 상황이 오면 그 어두운 상황이 끝날 때까지 잘 견디십시오.
때가 되면 주님을 따르는 것이 말로 다할 수 없는 기쁨이 될 것입니다.
요즘은 근현대 여러 전쟁을 겪은 어르신 세대를 많이 생각합니다. 일년만 상황이 이렇게 변해도 당황스러운데, 수년을 불안하고 불확실한 시대를 지나온 분들에 대한 이해와 연민의 마음이 듭니다.
불확실하고 불안전한 시기에 우리는 어떤 소리에 귀를 기울여야 할까요?
너희 중에 여호와를 경외하며 그의 종의 목소리를 청종하는 자가 누구냐
흑암 중에 행하여 빛이 없는 자라도 여호와의 이름을 의뢰하며 자기 하나님께 의지할지어다(사 50:10)
불안한 시대일수록 우리는 하나님의 소리에 그의 종인 예수님의 소리에 귀를 기울여야 합니다.
오늘 본문은 고난의 시대에 이스라엘이 누구의 목소리에 귀를 기울일 것인가에 대한 이야기입니다.
그의 목소리
모세와 아론은 대담하게 바로를 찾아가 그를 만나 내 백성을 보내라… 고 말합니다. 그러자 바로는 다음과 같이 답변합니다. 1) 여호와가 누구냐? 내가 왜 그에게 순종해야 하는가? 2) 나는 여호와를 모른다. 보내지 않겠다. 우리는 건방진 바로의 모습에 흥분합니다. 하지만 그의 입장에서 생각하면 너무 당황스런 상황일 것입니다. 노예 둘이 와서 여호와 하나님이 당신의 백성을 보내랍니다 라고 말하면, 순순히 네! 라고 할 사람이 있을까요? 바로의 입장에서는 말도 안 되는 어이없고, 너무나도 당황스러운 상황인 것입니다. 충분히 바로의 입장과 그의 심정을 이해할 수 있습니다.
하지만 그 당황스러움에도 그의 목소리(2b)를 듣고 순종해야 합니다. 그의 목소리는 대부분 상식적이지만, 늘 상식적이지는 않습니다. 그의 목소리는 때론 몰상식, 비상식, 상식초월까지 갈 때가 한 두 번이 아닙니다. 예를 들자면 왕상 17장에 등장하는 사르밧 과부에게 들려진 그의 목소리입니다.
엘리야가 그에게 이르되 두려워하지 말고 가서 네 말대로 하려니와 먼저 그것으로 나를 위하여 작은 떡 한 개를 만들어 내게로 가져오고 그 후에 너와 네 아들을 위하여 만들라
(왕상 17:13)
그의 목소리는 말도 안 되는 것이었지만, 그의 목소리에 순종한 결과는 3년 반 동안 가루와 기름이 끊이지 않는 것이었습니다. 심지어 죽었던 아들이 살아나는 기적까지 경험합니다.
그의 목소리는 여호와를 알건 모르건, 사랑하건 사랑하지 않건 피조물이라면 모두 들어야 합니다.
심지어 자신이 신이라고 생각하는 멍청한 인간 바로조차도 반드시 들어야 하는 목소리인 것입니다.
앞으로 살펴볼 출애굽기 전반부는 하나님의 목소리를 들을 것인가? 바로를 들을 것인가? 의 싸움입니다.
하나님이 참 신인가? 바로가, 또한 이집트의 신들이 참 신인가? 의 싸움이 될 것입니다.
거짓말을 듣지 않게 하라!
바로가 모세와 아론의 말을 들을 일은 만무합니다. 하나님도 이미 말씀(출 4:21b) 하신 바입니다.
오히려 상황이 더 악화되었습니다. 바로가 괘씸하게 생각하여 벽돌을 만들 때 반죽에 집어 넣는 짚을 제공하지 않고 이스라엘 백성들 스스로 주어서 작업하되, 동일한 작업량을 요구한 것입니다.
이제 출애굽기의 구도는 모세 vs 바로의 대결구도가 되었습니다. 하지만 사실은 하나님 vs 사탄입니다.
하나님은 이스라엘을 이제 하나님의 백성으로, 곧 예배하는 공동체로 만들어 하나님만 경배하도록 할 것입니다. 바로는 계속해서 이스라엘 백성들이 자신을 섬기도록, 자신의 일을 하도록 하려는 소유권의 다툼입니다. 이스라엘 백성은 그의 목소리를 듣든지, 바로의 목소리를 들어야 합니다.
바로는 이스라엘이 하나님의 목소리를 듣지 못하도록 방해합니다. 어떻게 방해할까요? 잡음입니다.
그의 목소리는 모든 잡음(감정, 인간적 생각, 교만, 죄 등)을 제거할 때 비로소 들립니다.
첫 번째로 바로는 이스라엘 백성에게 여호와를 예배하라 는 그의 목소리가 거짓말이다 라는 잡음을 들려줍니다. 거짓말로 사람을 속이는 것은 사탄의 가장 큰 장기입니다. 분명한 그의 목소리, 곧 하나님의 말씀을 하와에게 했던 것처럼 아닐걸? 진짜 그럴까? 라는 거짓과 의심으로 속입니다.
예수님은 사탄은 거짓을 말할 때마다 제 것으로 말하는 거짓말쟁이요, 거짓의 아비라고 말씀(요 8:44) 하셨습니다. 사탄은 바로처럼 하나님의 말씀을 믿지 말라고, 순종하지 말라고, 불순종하는 것이 유익하다고 거짓말합니다.
두 번째 잡음은 이스라엘 백성들에게 노동을 가중시켜 수고롭게 하는 것입니다. 상황이 너무 어렵고 힘들다 보면 그의 목소리를 못 들을 수도 있습니다. 이스라엘은 모세와 아론을 통하여 하나님의 목소리를 듣고 경배하는 자리로 나아갔지만, 그만 환경과 상황이 악화됨으로 하나님의 말씀에 순종하는 것을 포기하거나, 주저하게 됩니다. 사람은 당황스러운 상황이 되면 그의 목소리를 듣기보다는 상황의 소리, 사람들의 소리, 두려움의 소리 같은 잡소리에 귀를 기울입니다. 이제 이스라엘은 당황스러운 상황이 되었습니다. 누구의 소리를 들어야 할까요?
멈추면 비로소 보이는 것들(혜민, 쌤앤파커스, 2012) 이라는 책이 있습니다. 전세계는 매우 당황스러운 상황을 맞이하고 있지만 이 상황은 다시 한 번 우리에게 소중한 것이 무엇인지를 생각하고 돌아볼 수 있는 기회를 주었습니다. 미친 듯이 황금을 쫓아 달려온 전세계, 그 가운데 함께 달린 우리들입니다. 잠시 숨을 고르도록 속도를 늦추고, 심지어 멈출 수밖에 없는 당황스러운 상황 가운데 귀를, 그리고 눈을 기울여 봅시다. 그의 목소리를 들어 봅시다.
진정한 예배의 자리로 나오라! 예배자가 되라. 그분은 말씀 하십니다. 그리심 산도 아니고 예루살렘 산도 아닌 바로 이 때다! 지금이다!지금이야 말로 그의 목소리만 들을 수 있는 절호의 찬스입니다.
장소가 아닌 내가 서있는 그곳이 곳 성전이 되어야 합니다. 성전은 예수가, 성령이 함께 하시는 곳입니다.
여호와 삼마! 지금 이곳에 계시는 하나님을 느끼는 그것이 예배입니다.
내가 너희를 구원할 것이다. 어떤 상황 가운데에서도 하나님은 이스라엘을 구원할 것입니다.
왜냐하면 그렇게 하시기로 작정하셨기 때문입니다. 달콤한 그의 목소리에 귀를 기울입시다!
(5:1) Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.’”
2 Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”
3 Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword.”
4 But the king of Egypt said, “Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!” 5 Then Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working.”
6 That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and overseers in charge of the people: 7 “You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw. 8 But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ 9 Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.”
10 Then the slave drivers and the overseers went out and said to the people, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you any more straw. 11 Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.’” 12 So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. 13 The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, “Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.” 14 And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?”
Oswald Chambers explains in his book: My Utmost for His Highest how we should face humiliating situations:
When the darkness of dismay comes, endure until it is over, because out of it will come the ability to follow Jesus truly, which brings inexpressibly wonderful joy.
These days, I think a lot of the elderly who have gone through various wars in the past and modern times. We feel dismayed even if the situation changes like this (Covid) only for a year. I have a feeling of understanding and deep compassion for those who have passed the times of instability and uncertainty over many years.
To what voice should we listen to in uncertain and insecure times?
Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant?
Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light,
trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God
(Isaiah 50:10)
In times of anxiety, we must listen to the voice of God and the voice of His servant, Jesus.
Today's scripture is a story about whose voice Israel should listen to in times of suffering.
His Voice
Moses and Aaron boldly went to Pharaoh to meet him and said, The Lord God said, Let my people go. Immediately, Pharaoh responds as follows. 1) Who is the Lord? Why should I obey Him? 2) I don't know the Lord (Jehovah). I will not let Israel go. We tend to get inflamed by the disrespectful attitude of Pharaoh. But if we think about it from his point of view, Pharaoh is in the right to get upset. If two slaves show up and say, Jehovah God says, "let my people go", then is there anybody who can respond with, yes!? From Pharaoh's point of view, it is absurd and very humiliating. We can fully understand Pharaoh's position and his feelings.
However, despite that circumstance, he must listen to His voice (2b) and obey. ‘His voice’ is mostly common sense, but not always so. ‘His voice’ sometimes goes beyond ignorance, sensibility, or transcendence. For example, this is ‘His voice’ heard by the widow Zarephath in 1 Kings chapter 17.
Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said.
But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me,
and then make something for yourself and your son.
(1 Kings 17:13)
‘His voice’ was completely absurd, but the result of obeying ‘His voice’ was that for three and a half years, the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry. She even experiences a miracle in which her dead son comes to life.
His voice must be heard by all creations, whether they know Jehovah or not, love Him or not.
Even Pharaoh, a foolish human being who thinks he is a god, must listen to ‘His voice’.
The first part of Exodus we will study is a fight between Should you listen to God’s voice? Or Pharaoh’s voice?
It will be a fight to prove Is God Real? Or is Pharaoh, and also the gods of Egypt, true gods?
Do Not Listen to Lies!
Pharaoh will refuse to listen to Moses and Aaron. This is what God has already mentioned in chapter 4:21b.
Rather, things got worse. When Pharaoh thought that it was annoying, he instructed his slave drivers not to supply the people with straw for making bricks, but instead made Israelites go and gather their own straw. Yet demanded the same amount of quota each day.
Now the composition of Exodus is the confrontation between Moses vs. Pharaoh.
But the truth is it is God vs Satan.
God will make Israel now God's people, a worshipping community, so that God alone can be worshipped. Pharaoh continues to fight for his ownership to keep the Israelites to serve him and to do his own work. Now the Israelites must either hear ‘His voice’ or Pharaoh's.
Pharaoh prevents Israel from hearing the voice of God. How does he interfere? With noises.
‘His voice’ is heard only when all noises (feelings, human thoughts, pride, sin, etc.) are removed.
First, Pharaoh tells the Israelites that ‘His voice’ to worship the Lord is a lie (9). Deceiving people with lies is Satan's greatest weapon. ‘His voice’ is clearly the word of God, but Satan throws the questions and doubts as he did to Eve, Are you sure? Is it really so?
Jesus claimed When Satan lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies (John 844). Satan, like Pharaoh, lies that it is beneficial not to believe, not to obey, and to disobey God's Word.
The second noise is to increase the labor of the Israelites and make them toil.
If the current situation is too harsh and difficult, they may not be able to hear His voice.
Israel heard the voice of God through Moses and Aaron and went to a place of worship, but because the circumstances and conditions worsened, they either gave up or hesitated to obey God's word.
When a person is dismayed, rather than listening to ‘His voice’, he/she listens to the noise, sounds of the situation, the voices of people, and the sounds of fear. Israel is now in a distressing situation. Who should they listen to?
There is a book called 'The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down' (Hyemin, samnparkers, 2012). The world is facing a very panicking situation, but it has once again given us the opportunity to think and reflect on what is important to us. The world has been chasing gold like crazy, and we were running together in the midst of them.
Let us slow down to take a quick breath, and open our ears and eyes amid this difficult situation where we are forced to stop. Let us listen to ‘His voice’.
Come to the place of true worship! Be a worshipper. He is speaking to us. It is not Mount Gerizim nor Mount Jerusalem! Now is the time! Now is the perfect chance to hear only ‘His voice’.
The place where I stand, not the location itself, should be the temple of worship.
The temple is where Jesus and the Holy Spirit indwell.
Jehovah-Shammah! True worship is to feel God who is here with us now.
I will save you. Under all circumstances, God will save Israel.
Because He was determined to do so. Let us listen to His sweet voice!
