포도원의 품꾼들
(1) 천국은 마치 품꾼을 얻어 포도원에 들여보내려고 이른 아침에 나간 집 주인과 같으니
(2) 그가 하루 한 데나리온씩 품꾼들과 약속하여 포도원에 들여보내고
(3) 또 제삼시에 나가 보니 장터에 놀고 서 있는 사람들이 또 있는지라
(4) 그들에게 이르되 너희도 포도원에 들어가라 내가 너희에게 상당하게 주리라 하니 그들이 가고
(5) 제육시와 제구시에 또 나가 그와 같이 하고
(6) 제십일시에도 나가 보니 서 있는 사람들이 또 있는지라 이르되 너희는 어찌하여 종일토록 놀고 여기 서 있느냐

(10) 먼저 온 자들이 와서 더 받을 줄 알았더니 그들도 한 데나리온씩 받은지라
(11) 받은 후 집 주인을 원망하여 이르되
(12) 나중 온 이 사람들은 한 시간밖에 일하지 아니하였거늘 그들을 종일 수고하며 더위를 견딘 우리와 같게 하였나이다
(13) 주인이 그 중의 한 사람에게 대답하여 이르되 친구여 내가 네게 잘못한 것이 없노라 네가 나와 한 데나리온의 약속을 하지 아니하였느냐
(14) 네 것이나 가지고 가라 나중 온 이 사람에게 너와 같이 주는 것이 내 뜻이니라
(15) 내 것을 가지고 내 뜻대로 할 것이 아니냐 내가 선하므로 네가 악하게 보느냐
(16) 이와 같이 나중 된 자로서 먼저 되고 먼저 된 자로서 나중 되리라
오늘 제목은 예전에 한국에서 모 제과 회사의 바다 게 맛 나는 과자 CF에서 신구라는 원로배우가 외쳤던 니들이 게 맛을 알아 라는 카피를 패러디한 것입니다. 보통은 본문의 제목을 포도원 품꾼의 비유 라고 말합니다. 개인적으로 저는 본문의 제목을 제자들을 향한 예수님의 사랑의 교훈 이라고 하고 싶습니다. 그리고 부제로 니들이 은혜를 알아? 를 작은 글씨로 써 넣어야 하는 본문이라고 생각합니다.
왜냐하면 본문은 일차적으로 모든 것을 다 버리고 예수님을 쫓는 제자들에게 예수님께서 주시는 교훈이기 때문입니다. 제자들은 예수님을 모든 것을 버리고 따른다는 자부심이 있었고, 동시에 그러므로 예수님이 왕좌에 앉으실 때, 반드시 한 자리를 주셔야 한다고 은근히 기대하고 있었던 것입니다.
이러한 제자들의 태도는 오늘 본문을 전후한 이야기들에서 모두 드러나 제자들의 감추어진 속마음을 확증해 줍니다. 예수님은 19장 28절에서 제자들이 마지막 때에 얻을 영광을 약속하셨지만, 이어서 그러나 먼저 된 자로서 나중 되고 나중 된 자로서 먼저 될 자가 많으니라(30) 라고 말씀을 마무리 하셨습니다.
그리고 오늘 본문이 시작되는데, 헨드릭슨William Hendriksen 은 헬라어 원본에 γάρ갈, 왜냐하면이라는 이유접속사가 있다는 점에 착안하여 본문은 19:30절 말씀에 대한 설명이라고 해석합니다.
또한 오늘 본문의 마지막 구절(16절) 역시 순서만 바뀌었을 뿐 동일한 말씀을 기록하고 있습니다.
백석대학교의 최갑종 교수 역시 포도원 품꾼들의 비유는 19장에서 말한 예수님의 모든 교훈의 결론인 동시에 비유 이하에 나타나는 모든 교훈의 근거가 된다 라고 말했습니다. 한마디로 하면 오늘 본문이 19-20장 전체의 핵심이라는 말입니다.
이상한 주인
본문은 천국에 대한 비유입니다. 주님은 앞선 19장에서 계속 천국의 주인공, 천국에 들어갈 수 있는 자에 대한 이야기를 나누었고, 이제 결론을 이 비유를 통해서 말씀 하시는 것입니다. 천국은 마치 품꾼들을 구하여 포도원에 들여보내는 집주인과 같다고 말씀 하십니다. 그런데 이 집주인이 조금 이상합니다.
한국이든 미국이든 인력시장이 있습니다. THE HOME DEPOT 매장 앞에 가면 하루 품삯을 받고 막일을 하는 노동자를 구할 수 있습니다. 한국 역시도 마찬가지입니다. 일꾼을 연결해주는 곳에서 대기를 하고 있으면 공사업체 관계자가 와서 필요한 사람을 선택하여 밴에 태워서 공사현장에 데리고 가서 일을 시키고 일당을 줍니다. 아마 예수님 당시에도 이와 동일한 문화가 이미 있었던 것으로 보입니다.
보통 그 시작은 오전6시입니다. 공사를 책임지는 사람이나 주인은 당연히 적은 임금을 주고 최대한 일을 많이 시키고 싶어합니다. 그러므로 필요한 사람은 오전 6시 일을 시작하는 시간에 맞춰 하루 일당을 약속하고 데리고 갑니다. 물론 미국에서는 시간당으로 계산합니다.
그러니 12절에 등장하는 오전 6시에 와서 노동했던 자들의 항의는 어느 정도 설득력이 있습니다.
하지만 집주인이 이상한 사람입니다. 집주인은 오전 6시, 9시, 오후 12시, 3시, 5시 계속하여 시장에 나가서 놀고 있는 자들을 포도원으로 데리고 옵니다. 모든 일이 끝나고 임금을 지불하는 시간이 되어 나중에 온 자부터 시작하여 먼저 온 자에게 삯을 주되, 다 동일하게 당시 노동자의 하루 품삯인 한 데나리온을 줍니다. 그러자 자신들은 먼저 와서 일했기에, 끝나기 한 시간 전에 온 자보다 품삯을 더 받을 것이라고 기대했던 먼저 온 자들이 왜 동일하게 임금을 주냐며 집주인에게 항의를 합니다.
이들의 항의에 대하여 집주인은 매우 논리적으로 답변(13-15절)을 합니다.
그리고 예수님은 이와 같이 나중 된 자가 먼저 되고 먼저 된 자로서 나중 되리라고 비유를 마무리 합니다.
먼저 온 자들의 문제점
항의하는 먼저 온 자들에 대한 집주인의 답변에서 본문의 핵심을 찾을 수 있습니다. 집주인은 먼저 온 자에게 약속(2절)한대로 한 데나리온을 주었고, 나중 온 자에게 집주인 자신이 자신의 것을 가지고 주고 싶은 대로 주는 것은 문제가 없으며, 오히려 이것은 선한 것인데 왜 악하다고 하느냐? 라는 것입니다.
그럼에도 왜, 만일 내가 먼저 온 자라면 약간 억울할 것 같다는 생각이 들까요?
먼저는 주권에 대한 오해 때문입니다.
집주인은 품꾼들에게 동일한 임금 한 데나리온을 주었지만 그것은 동일한 지급이 아닌 차등지급이었습니다. 가장 먼저 온 자는 시간당 1/12데나리온을 받은 셈이고, 가장 늦게 온 자는 시간 당 한 데나리온을 받은 셈입니다. 12배나 차이 나는 임금입니다.
하지만 품삯을 주는 것은 주인의 마음에 달렸습니다. 다 똑같이 동일지급을 하든지 차등지급을 하든지는 주인의 마음에 달린 것입니다. 먼저 온 자들은 억울함에 그만, 자신들이 주인 행세를 하려 했던 것입니다.
분명한 월권입니다. 오히려 선을 베푸는 주인을 불공평한 나쁜 사람으로 만들어 버린 것입니다.
두 번째로 그들은 은혜를 몰랐던 것입니다.
집주인이 11시(오후5시)에 시장에 나가보니 여전히 일이 없어 놀고 있는 사람들이 있었습니다.
그 이유를 물었더니 아무도 그들을 일꾼으로 데리고 가지 않았다고 하소연합니다.
그러자 집주인이 불쌍히 여겨서 그들을 포도원으로 데리고 와 일을 시킨 것입니다.
왜 그들은 오후 5시가 되도록 일꾼으로 뽑히지 못했을까요? 너무 간단합니다. 그들은 보기에도 비실비실해 보였기 때문입니다. 무거운 것을 들 힘도 없어 보이고, 일도 잘 못할 것 같아 보이는 사람들이었던 것입니다. 반면에 가장 먼저 뽑혀간 사람들은 아마도 건장한 체구에 피부도 까무잡잡한 것이 아주 일을 잘 할 것처럼 보이는 자들이었을 것입니다. 문제는 양측모두 자신을 안다는 것입니다.
그래서 먼저 온 자들은 자신이 잘나서, 똑똑해서, 건강해서, 힘이 세서 일꾼으로 뽑힌 것이고, 그러므로 자신이 받는 삯은 당연한 것이 됩니다. 반면에 나중에 온 자는 한 시간 일하는 내내 눈물이 멈추지 않았을 것입니다. 오늘도 아내와 자식을 굶길 뻔했는데… 누가 한 시간 밖에 남지 않은 시간에 일꾼을 쓴단 말인가?! 아마도 한 시간이지만 자신의 최선을 다했을 것입니다. 그리고 품삯을 받아보니 느끼는 은혜는 몇 배가 됩니다.
먼저 된 자들의 문제는 자신들이 택함 받고 부름 받은 은혜를 은혜로 알지 못했고, 오히려 주인의 주권까지 침해하여 주인을 나쁜 사람으로 만들어 버리는 잘못을 저지른 것입니다.
하지만 나중에 온 자는 은혜를 은혜로 알고, 주인에게 너무도 감사한 마음을 잃지 않았던 것입니다. 천국에서 큰 자, 먼저 된 자는 이러한 자입니다.
사역할 수 있는 사역지, 직장, 건강, 지혜, 가족을 주신 것이 얼마나 큰 은혜인지를 아십니까?
그 은혜를 알고, 느끼고, 끝까지 그 감격과 감사를 잃지 않는 자가 계속하여 먼저 된 성숙한 자로서 자리를 지킬 수 있는 것입니다. 천국은 이러한 일꾼들이 가는 곳입니다. 은혜를 은혜로 아는…

The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard
1 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.
3 “About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4 He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ 5 So they went.
“He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. 6 About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’
7 “‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered.
“He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’
8 “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’
9 “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. 10 So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11 When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12 ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’
13 “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? 14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
16 “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
Today's title is a parody of the old actor Shingu’s “do you guys know what crabs taste like?” which was a line he joked about in a snack commercial in Korea.
Usually, the title of today’s scripture is called The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard. Personally, I would like to title today’s scripture as The lesson of Jesus' love for His disciples. And as a subtitle, Do You Even Know Grace? should be written in small print underneath.
This is because today’s words are primarily a lesson given by Jesus to the disciples who threw away everything to pursue Jesus. The disciples had the pride of following Jesus with all things left behind, and at the same time, they were secretly expecting that when Jesus sat on the throne, they must also be given each a seat.
These disciples' attitudes are revealed in the stories before and after today's lessons, confirming the hidden desires of the disciples. In Chapter 19:28, Jesus promised the glory that the disciples will receive in the end times, but then He concluded with but many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first (30).
William Hendriksen interprets today’s scripture as an explanation of verse 19:30, taking into account the fact that the original Greek Bible begins with a conjunction γάρ (gar) meaning for (indeed). In addition, the last verse (verse 16) of today's scripture is also recorded in the same message, in vice versa.
Professor Gab-jong Choi of Baekseok University also said that the parable of the workers in the vineyard is the conclusion of all the lessons of Jesus spoken in Chapter 19 and at the same time is the basis for all the lessons that appear after the parable. In short, today's message is the heart of the entire chapters 19-20.
Strange Landowner
Today’s scripture is a parable about heaven. In the previous chapter 19, the Lord continued to talk about the protagonist of heaven, the one who can enter the kingdom of heaven. And now He is speaking the conclusion through this parable. Heaven is like a landowner who seeks workers and sends them into the vineyard. But this landlord is a little strange.
Whether it is in Korea or the United States, there is a so-called labor market. If you go in front of The Home Depot store, you can find a worker who is paid a day's wages to do labor work. The same is true of Korea. If you wait at the place where the workers are gathered, an official from a construction company comes to select the people they need, picks them up up, takes them to the construction site, and gives them a job and a daily wage. Perhaps the same culture already existed at the time of Jesus.
Usually this hiring starts at 6 am. The owner or a person in charge of the construction naturally wants to pay a small wage and expects as much work as possible. Therefore, those who need it are promised a daily wage and taken with the time to start work as early as 6 am. (Of course, in the US, wage is calculated per hour).
So, the protests of those who came to work at 6 a.m. in verse 12 are somewhat convincing.
But the landowner is a strange person. He continues to go to the market at 6am, 9am, at noon, 3pm and at 5pm to bring to the vineyard those who are doing nothing. After all the work is over, it is time to pay the wages. Starting with the last ones hired, and going on to the one who came first, but all receive the same, one denarius, the worker's daily wage. Then, those who came first and worked all day, started to grumble against the landowner because they expected to receive more wages than those who came only an hour before the end of work.
To their complaint, the landowner responds very logically (verses 13-15).
And Jesus concludes so the last will be first, and the first will be last (16).
Problems of Those Who Came First
The point of today’s message can be found in the landowner's response to the first-comers who grumbled. The landowner gave the first ones a denarius as promised (verse 2), and the landowner also gave the last ones what he wanted to give out of his possession, and there is no problem with that. So why do you call it unfair?
But, we may still think it would be a bit unfair if we were the first to come, right?
First, it is because of a misunderstanding of sovereignty
The landlord paid the workers one denarius of the same wage, but it was an unfair calculation, not exactly the same payment. Because the earliest workers received 1/12 denarion per hour, and the latest one received one denarion per hour. That is a 12-fold difference.
However, it is up to the landowner's heart to pay the wages. It is up to the landowner's mind whether to pay the same or differential payments. Those who came first became resentful, and they tried to pretend to be masters.
It is clearly an overpass. They turned the good landowner into an unfair bad person.
Second, they did not know Grace
When the landlord went out to the market at 11 o'clock (which is 5 pm), there were still people doing nothing because there was no work for them.
When asked the reason, they complain that no one took them in as workers.
Then the landowner felt pity and brought them to the vineyard to work.
Why weren't they picked up as workers until 5pm? It is so simple. Because they looked impractical. They seemed to have no strength to lift anything heavy, and seemed to be unable to get the job done. On the other hand, the first people who were picked up in the morning were probably those who were strong and tanned, who seemed to work very well. And both sides know themselves well.
The first ones are chosen as workers because they know they are good, smart, healthy, strong, and therefore they believe they deserve the wages. On the other hand, those who came later would not have stopped crying for the whole hour of work. Because they almost starved their wife and children that day… “Who would hire workers with an hour left?!” It was only an hour, but they must have done their very best. And when they receive their wages, the grace they feel is multiplied.
The problem of the first ones was that they did not know that they were chosen and called by Grace, but rather infringed upon the master's Sovereignty and made the mistake of turning the master into a bad person.
However, the last ones knew grace as Grace, and they did not lose their gratitude to the landowner. These are the greatest and the first in Heaven.
Do you realize how great the Grace is to have a place to minister, to work, run business, health, wisdom, and to have a family?
Those who know, feel, and do not lose their emotions and gratitude until the end can continue to maintain their position as mature ones who have become the first.
Heaven is where these workers enter. Those who know Grace by grace...
Let us pray and ask for the Grace to know Grace by the Grace!
