(1) 그 때에 바리새인과 서기관들이 예루살렘으로부터 예수께 나아와 이르되
(2) 당신의 제자들이 어찌하여 장로들의 전통을 범하나이까 떡 먹을 때에 손을 씻지 아니하나이다
(3) 대답하여 이르시되 너희는 어찌하여 너희의 전통으로 하나님의 계명을 범하느냐
(4) 하나님이 이르셨으되 네 부모를 공경하라 하시고 또 아버지나 어머니를 비방하는 자는 반드시 죽임을 당하리라 하셨거늘
(5) 너희는 이르되 누구든지 아버지에게나 어머니에게 말하기를 내가 드려 유익하게 할 것이 하나님께 드림이 되었다고 하기만 하면
(6) 그 부모를 공경할 것이 없다 하여 너희의 전통으로 하나님의 말씀을 폐하는도다
(7) 외식하는 자들아 이사야가 너희에 관하여 잘 예언하였도다 일렀으되
(8) 이 백성이 입술로는 나를 공경하되 마음은 내게서 멀도다
(9) 사람의 계명으로 교훈을 삼아 가르치니 나를 헛되이 경배하는도다 하였느니라 하시고
(10) 무리를 불러 이르시되 듣고 깨달으라
(11) 입으로 들어가는 것이 사람을 더럽게 하는 것이 아니라 입에서 나오는 그것이 사람을 더럽게 하는 것이니라
(12) 이에 제자들이 나아와 이르되 바리새인들이 이 말씀을 듣고 걸림이 된 줄 아시나이까
(13) 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 심은 것마다 내 하늘 아버지께서 심으시지 않은 것은 뽑힐 것이니
(14) 그냥 두라 그들은 맹인이 되어 맹인을 인도하는 자로다 만일 맹인이 맹인을 인도하면 둘이 다 구덩이에 빠지리라 하시니
(15) 베드로가 대답하여 이르되 이 비유를 우리에게 설명하여 주옵소서
(16) 예수께서 이르시되 너희도 아직까지 깨달음이 없느냐
(17) 입으로 들어가는 모든 것은 배로 들어가서 뒤로 내버려지는 줄 알지 못하느냐
(18) 입에서 나오는 것들은 마음에서 나오나니 이것이야말로 사람을 더럽게 하느니라
(19) 마음에서 나오는 것은 악한 생각과 살인과 간음과 음란과 도둑질과 거짓 증언과 비방이니
(20) 이런 것들이 사람을 더럽게 하는 것이요 씻지 않은 손으로 먹는 것은 사람을 더럽게 하지 못하느니라
손을 씻는 것만으로도 많은 질병을 예방할 수 있다고 합니다.
그러므로 요즘처럼 감염병이 유행하는 시기에는 손을 자주 씻는 것은 아주 좋은 습관입니다.
오늘 본문은 식사 전에 손을 씻는 문제로 예수님과 바리새인, 서기관들이 논쟁을 벌이는 장면입니다.
식사 전에 손을 씻는 전통이 있었던 유대인들은 이를 매우 중요한 전통으로 여겼습니다. 위생을 위해서는 너무 좋은 규례입니다. 그런데 주님은 손을 씻지 않고 식사하는 제자들을 지적하는 바리새인, 서기관에게 매우 심하게 질책하시면서 그들의 잘못된 율법관을 나무라십니다. 바리새인들과 서기관들은 무엇이 문제였을까요?
전통보다 말씀
바리새인과 서기관들은 예수의 소문을 듣고 예루살렘에서부터 찾아옵니다. 트집을 잡기 위함입니다. 그런데 아주 큰 건이 걸렸습니다. 예수님의 제자들이 손을 씻고 식사를 해야 하는 장로들의 전통을 어기는 장면을 목격한 것입니다. 이에 그들은 바로 예수께 항의합니다. 그러자 예수께서 그들을 아주 참혹하게 박살을 냅니다.
첫째 지적은 왜 전통으로 하나님의 계명을 범하느냐입니다. 사실 밥 먹기 전에 손을 씻는 것은 아주 좋은 습관입니다. 주님이 지적하는 것은 손을 씻는 행위 자체가 아닙니다. 그들이 하나님의 말씀보다 자신들의 전통을 위에 두고 전통을 핑계로 말씀을 범하는 행위를 지적했던 것입니다.
실제적인 예로 예수님은 고르반 이라는 제도에 대해서 말씀 하십니다. 고르반 이란 그것은 하나님께 드릴 예물(막 7:11) 이라는 의미입니다. 예를 들면 포도밭에서 나는 소출의 일부로 부모를 봉양해야 하는데, 그것이 싫어서 고르반 하면, 그 포도원의 소출은 부모에게 드리지 않아도 된다는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 그 포도밭 전체가 하나님께 드린 것이기 때문입니다.
원칙적으로 하나님 우선주의 사상은 옳은 것입니다. 주님도 부모, 아내, 자녀를 더 사랑하는 것은 옳지 않습니다. 그런데 고르반 제도의 묘미는 말만 그렇게 외치고, 실제로 포도밭을 드리지 않아도 전혀 문제 없음에 있습니다.
F.F. Bruce 에 의하면 오리겐, 제롬 등은 당시 서기관이나 제사장들이 고르반을 외치는 자들에게 얼마의 커미션을 받고 그들의 악행을 눈 감아주었다고 주장했다고 합니다. 아주 악한 행위입니다. 더 악한 것은 자신들의 악행을 합리화하고자 하나님의 말씀보다 자신들의 전통을 더 위에 놓는 어리석음입니다. 주님은 그들에게 외식하는 자들이라고 외치십니다.
둘째로 그들이 이러한 잘못된 가르침으로 백성을 정죄하고 컨트롤함으로 공멸의 길을 걷고 있음을 지적하십니다. 주님은 이사야 선지자의 말을 자유인용하여 말씀하십니다.
① 입술로는하나님을 공경하지만… 주여주여 하는 자마다 천국에가는 것이 아닙니다(7:21).
② 마음은내게서 멀도다… 겉과 속이다른 모습이 외식하는 것입니다. 회개하라, 곧 마음을 뜯어 고치라!
③ 사람의계명으로 교훈을 삼아가르치니 나를 헛되이경배하도다…하나님의 방법, 말씀대로해야 합니다.
자의적인 성경해석은 멸망에이르는 길입니다. 이러한 서기관, 바리새인들의 잘못된 가르침을따르는 것은 결국 같이멸망에 이르는 길입니다. 이는마치 소경이 소경을 인도하는것과 같은 일입니다. 결과는뻔합니다.
둘 다 죄의구덩이에 빠질 수밖에 없는 것입니다. 신앙생활은 제대로 배워야 합니다.
인간의 사상, 생각, 해석이 기준이 아니라 말씀이 기준이어야 합니다.
입술보다 마음
예수님은 이 교훈을 무리들에게로 확장(10절) 시킵니다. 11절의 말씀은 영적인 진리를 담고 있습니다.
입으로 세균이 들어가면 당연히 사람의 몸이 오염되어 병에 걸릴 것입니다. 하지만 예수님은 영적인 차원에서 말씀하십니다. 입으로 들어가는 음식이 사람의 영혼을 더럽히는 것이 아니라, 입에서 나오는 그것이 사람의 영혼을 더럽게 합니다. 즉 죄를 짓게 합니다. 베드로 사도 덕분에 이에 대한 예수님의 자세한 해석을 들을 수 있습니다.
음식은 입으로 들어가 배변 활동을 통해 밖으로 버려질 뿐입니다. 하지만 입에서 나오는 것은 마음에서 나오는 것입니다. 그래서 누가는 다음과 같이 말했습니다.
선한 사람은 마음에 쌓은 선에서 선을 내고 악한 자는 그 쌓은 악에서 악을 내나니
이는 마음에 가득한 것을 입으로 말함이니라 (눅 6:45)
말이라는 것은 단순히 말만 의미하는 것이 아닙니다. 모든 행동과 연결되는 것입니다. 그래서 마태는 마음에서 나오는 것이 악한 생각과 살인과 간음과 음란과 도둑질과 거짓 증언과 비방이라고 말합니다.
마가는 더 많이 기록합니다.
속에서 곧 사람의 마음에서 나오는 것은 악한 생각 곧 음란과 도둑질과 살인과
간음과 탐욕과 악독과 속임과 음탕과 질투와 비방과 교만과 우매함이니 (막 7:21-22)
결국 우리의 거룩은 먹는 것과 같은 외적인 것이 아닌 우리의 내면인 마음에 달려 있는 것입니다.
그래서 예레미야 선지자도 다음과 같이 외쳤습니다.
만물보다 거짓되고 심히 부패한 것은 마음이라 누가 능히 이를 알리요마는 (렘 17:9)
그러므로 우리의 신앙생활은 입이 아니라 마음으로 해야 합니다. 가능하면 착한 마음, 고운 마음, 이쁜 마음을 가지도록 최선을 다해야 합니다. 무엇보다도 마음을 가꾸는 일에 힘을 쏟아야 합니다. 선천적으로 착한 성품(마음)을 타고 나는 사람도 있지만, 그렇지 않은 사람도 있습니다. 더 노력해야 합니다. 성령의 은혜를 더욱 구해야 합니다.
예수님의 말씀에 따라 손 씻지 않아도 된다 가 오늘 말씀의 결론이 되어서는 안됩니다. 육신의 건강과 위생을 위해서는 손을 씻는 것이 너무 중요하지만, 그보다 더 중요한 것은 마음을 씻는 것입니다!
겉으로 보여지는 행위에만 집중하는 것은 결코 진정한 신앙이 아닙니다. 날마다 생수 되시는 예수로 우리의 오염된 손과 마음을 씻읍시다! 우리의 마음 속 깊은 곳에서부터 소원이 주님을 닮는 것, 주님이 기뻐하는 제자가 되는 것이기를 소원합니다.
1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”
3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8 “‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’”
10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”
12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”
13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”
15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.”
16 “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”
Washing hands can prevent many diseases. Therefore, it is a very good habit to wash hands often especially during a period of infectious diseases like these days.
Today's scripture is a scene where Jesus, Pharisees, and scribes argue over the issue of washing hands before meals.
It was a very important as per Jewish tradition washing hands before meals. It's too good a rule for hygiene. However, the Lord rebuked the Pharisees and scribes very severely for pointing out the disciples who eat without washing their hands, and scolding their wrong law. What was the problem with the Pharisees and the scribes?
Word over tradition Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem after hearing the news of Jesus. It is for catching a trick. Finally they caught a very big thing. They witnessed Jesus' disciples breaking the elders' tradition of having to wash their hands and eat. So they immediately protest against Jesus. Then Jesus smashes them very badly.
The first is why they violate God's commandments over tradition. In fact, it is a very good habit to wash hands before eating. What the Lord points out is not the act of washing hands itself. He pointed out the act of putting their traditions above the Word of God and breaking the Word as an excuse.
As a practical example, Jesus speaks of a system called Gorban. Gorban means a gift to God (Mark 7:11). For example, in a vineyard, they have to feed parents as part of the produce, but if they don't want it, they don't have to give the vineyard's produce to their parents. Because the whole vineyard was given to God.
In principle, God-first thought is correct. It is not right for the Lord to love parents, wife, and children more. However, the beauty of the Gorban is that there is no problem at all, but just words, don't actually offer vineyards.
According to F.F. Bruce, Origen, Jerome, and others claimed that the scribes and priests at the time had received some commission from those who shouted Gorban and closed their eyes to evil deeds. It is a very evil act. The worst thing is the stupidity of putting their traditions above the Word of God to rationalize their evil deeds. The Lord is crying out to them as hypocrites.
Second, he points out that they are on the path of destruction by condemning and controlling the people with these false teachings. The Lord quotes the words of the prophet Isaiah.
① Honor God with only lips... Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of Heaven (7:21).
② Your heart is far from me… Hippocratic is a different appearance on the outside. Repent, open your heart and heal!
③ Worship God in vain because they teach with man's commandments. We must follow God's method and words.
Arbitrary interpretation of the Bible is the road to destruction. Following the false teachings of scribes and Pharisees is the way to destruction together. It is as if the blind man guides the blind man. The result is obvious.
Both are bound to fall into a pit of sin. The life of faith must be properly learned.
Human thoughts and interpretations should not be the standard, but the Word.
Heart over lip Jesus extends this lesson to the crowd (v. 10). The words of verse 11 contain spiritual truth.
If germs get into the mouth, of course, the human body will become contaminated and sick. But Jesus speaks on a spiritual level. Food that goes into the mouth does not pollute a person's soul, but what comes out of the mouth pollutes a person's soul. In other words, it makes him sin. Thanks to the apostle Peter, we can now hear Jesus' detailed interpretation.
Food only enters the mouth and is thrown out through bowel movements. But what comes out of the mouth comes out of the heart. So, Luke said:
The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart.
For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks (Luke 6:45)
Words don't just mean words. It is connected with actions. So Matthew says that what comes out of the heart is evil thoughts, murder, adultery, lewdness, stealing, false testimony, and slander.
Mark writes more.
For from within, out of mens hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly (Mark 7:21-22)
After all, our holiness depends on our inner mind, not on the outside as we eat.
So the prophet Jeremiah also exclaimed:
The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.
Who can understand it? (Jeremiah 17:9)
Therefore, our life of faith should be done with our heart, not our mouth. If possible, we should do our best to have a good heart, a kind heart, and a beautiful heart. Above all, we must put our energy into caring for our heart. Some people are born with good character (heart), but others are not. We have to work harder. We should seek more grace of the Holy Spirit.
“Don't have to wash hands according to Jesus' words” should not be conclusion of today's words. Washing your hands is so important for physical health and hygiene, but more importantly, washing your mind!
It is by no means true faith to focus solely on the outward actions. Let's wash our contaminated hands and hearts with Jesus, who is the living water every day! From the deep inside of our hearts, our wish is to resemble the Lord, to become a disciple who pleases the Lord.
