(38) 그 때에 서기관과 바리새인 중 몇 사람이 말하되 선생님이여 우리에게 표적 보여주시기를 원하나이다
(39) 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 악하고 음란한 세대가 표적을 구하나 선지자 요나의 표적 밖에는 보일 표적이 없느니라 (40) 요나가 밤낮 사흘 동안 큰 물고기 뱃속에 있었던 것 같이 인자도 밤낮 사흘 동안 땅 속에 있으리라 (41) 심판 때에 니느웨 사람들이 일어나 이 세대 사람을 정죄하리니 이는 그들이 요나의 전도를 듣고 회개하였음이거니와 요나보다 더 큰 이가 여기 있으며 (42) 심판 때에 남방 여왕이 일어나 이 세대 사람을 정죄하리니 이는 그가 솔로몬의 지혜로운 말을 들으려고 땅 끝에서 왔음이거니와 솔로몬보다 더 큰 이가 여기 있느니라
(43) 더러운 귀신이 사람에게서 나갔을 때에 물 없는 곳으로 다니며 쉬기를 구하되 쉴 곳을 얻지 못하고 (44) 이에 이르되 내가 나온 내 집으로 돌아가리라 하고 와 보니 그 집이 비고 청소되고 수리되었거늘 (45) 이에 가서 저보다 더 악한 귀신 일곱을 데리고 들어가서 거하니 그 사람의 나중 형편이 전보다 더욱 심하게 되느니라 이 악한 세대가 또한 이렇게 되리라
(46) 예수께서 무리에게 말씀하실 때에 그의 어머니와 동생들이 예수께 말하려고 밖에 섰더니 (47) 한 사람이 예수께 여짜오되 보소서 당신의 어머니와 동생들이 당신께 말하려고 밖에 서 있나이다 하니 (48) 말하던 사람에게 대답하여 이르시되 누가 내 어머니이며 내 동생들이냐 하시고 (49) 손을 내밀어 제자들을 가리켜 이르시되 나의 어머니와 나의 동생들을 보라 (50) 누구든지 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻대로 하는 자가 내 형제요 자매요 어머니이니라 하시더라
혈연 관계로 맺어져 가정을 이루는 사람들을 가리켜 가족이라고 합니다. 가족과 비슷한 좀 더 넓은 의미의 단어가 식구(食口)입니다. 말 그대로 밥 식, 내지는 먹을 식과 입 구 자가 합쳐져 함께 밥 먹는 입(사람)이라는 의미입니다.
학자들의 연구 결과에 의하면 함께 밥을 먹으면 그 상대방에 대한 호감도 높아진다고 합니다.
예수님 역시 항상 죄인을 용서하신 후 그가 요청하거나 때론 먼저 제안하셔서 함께 식사를 하셨습니다.
덕분에 바리새인, 서기관들은 예수를 먹기를 탐하고 포도주를 즐기는 사람(11:19)이라고 비난 했습니다.
그 때 함께 식사를 하는 의미는 용서함을 받은 성도에게 구원이 임했음을 가시적으로 보여주는 것입니다.
함께 밥을 먹는 다는 것은 식구요, 나아가 가족으로 초청 받은 것임을 확증하는 것입니다.
그런 점에서 유대인들이야말로 가장 귀한 식탁에 초대된 자, 만왕의 왕 식탁에 가장 가까웠던 자들입니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 그들은 스스로 왕의 밥상을 걷어 차버립니다. 오늘 본문은 어떻게 하나님의 선민으로 부름 받았던 자들이 스스로 밥상을 걷어 차버리는지, 그리고 어떤 자들이 진짜 왕의 자녀, 예수님의 참 가족이 될 수 있는지를 보여주는 귀한 본문입니다.
표적을 구하는 악한 세대 (38-45절)
서기관과 바리새인 중 몇 사람이 말하되 에서 말하되의 원어의 의미는 대답하다 입니다. 예수의 행동이나 말에 대한 반응으로 그들이 말한 것입니다. 그러니까 바리새인과 서기관들은 제자들이 안식일에 이삭을 잘라 먹은 것과 예수께서 오른손 마른 자를 고치신 사건으로 논쟁을 하다가 안 되니까, 예수가 사탄의 능력으로 귀신을 쫓아낸다고 모함합니다. 이에 주님은 성령훼방죄는 용서받지도 못한다고 엄하게 꾸중합니다. 그들은 이에 대한 반응으로 불쑥 표적을 보여 달라고 요청한 것입니다.
그러자 예수께서 그들에게 악하고 음란한 세대가 표적을 구한다(39절) 고 야단하십니다.
왜 이렇게 말씀 하시나요? 8장부터 지금까지 그들은 계속하여 예수의 이적에 대해서 듣거나 보았습니다. 실컷 표적을 보여주었더니, 바알세블에 힘을 빌려서 이적을 행한다고 했다가, 다시 또 표적을 보여달라는 이들은 정신이 있는 자들인가요?
어떤 표적을 보여줘도 그들은 안 믿으려고 작정했습니다. 그들에게는 그저 예수는 마술사와 같은 존재일 뿐, 결코 메시아가 될 수 없는 것입니다. 그래서 그들은 악하고 음란한 세대입니다. 그 의미는 사악하고 절개가 없는 자들 이라는 의미로 원래는 이방인들을 지칭할 때 사용하는 말입니다.
하지만 그들은 지금 이방인들보다 못한 상태입니다. 이제 예수께서 그들에게 보여줄 수 있는 마지막 표적은 요나의 표적 밖에는 없습니다. 요나의 표적이란 십자가에서 죽으심과 장사되어 삼일 만에 다시 살아나실 사건입니다. 이것은 메시아로서, 곧 구원자로서의 표적임과 동시에 심판자의 표적이 될 것입니다.
예수는 이방인의 대표를 들어 그들을 정죄 하십니다.
심판 때에 니느웨 사람들이 일어나 이 세대 사람들을 정죄할 것이다(41절).
니느웨는 북이스라엘을 B.C.722년 멸망시킨 앗수르의 수도입니다. 그래서 요나가 그토록 그들에게 회개하라는 메시지를 전하기 싫었던 것입니다. 하지만 그들은 요나의 대충 전하는 메시지를 듣고도 금식하며 온 나라와 짐승까지도 회개했습니다.
단지 요나가 외친 말 때문에 이런 역사가 일어났는데, 요나보다 크신 이가 더 많은 이적을 보여 줌에도 전혀 개의치 않으니, 이 세대 사람들은 변명의 여지가 없습니다. 심판 때 니느웨 백성들이 그들을 정죄할 것입니다.
심판 때에 남방 여왕이 일어나 이 세대 사람을 정죄할 것이다(42절).
이 사건은 왕상 10:1-13에 기록된 사건으로 솔로몬의 지혜의 소문을 듣고, 그의 지혜를 듣고자 스바 여왕이 찾아온 사건을 말합니다. 스바여왕은 의인화된 지혜, 곧 진리되신 예수를 사랑한 이방 여인입니다.
스바여왕이 솔로몬의 지혜만 듣고도 사랑에 빠졌는데, 솔로몬보다 크신 이, 곧 지혜의 근원이신 예수를 대하면서도 알아보지 못하는 바리새인과 서기관은 심판 날에 스바여왕에게 정죄를 당할 것입니다.
예수는 그들이 예수님을 사탄이라고 모함하지만, 사실은 오히려 그들이 귀신에 사주를 받고 있음을 알려주십니다. 주님은 이러한 세대의 미래에 대해서 다음과 같이 비유적으로 말씀 하십니다. 그들의 미래는 사람에게서 나간 귀신이 물 없는 곳을 다니다가 쉴 곳을 못 찾아, 다시 나왔던 사람에게 와보니 청소되고 비어 있어서 일곱 귀신을 데리고 들어오는 것과 같이 될 것입니다. 나중 형편이 지금보다도 더 안 좋아질 것입니다.
예수님의 참 가족
이처럼 이스라엘, 유대인들은 예수님의 식탁에 초청 받았지만 스스로 그 귀한 자리를 걷어찼습니다.
그렇다면 이제 예수님과 함께 그 축복의 식탁을 누릴 가족은 누구인가요?
어느 날 예수의 어머니와 동생들이 예수께 말하려고 찾아옵니다.
마가는 예수님의 가족들이 찾아온 이유를 다음과 같이 상세히 기록했습니다.
예수의 친족들이 듣고 그를 붙들러 나오니 이는 그가 미쳤다 함일러라 (막 3:21)
초대교회의 담임목사가 되었던 예수님의 동생 야고보도 이때까지는 예수님을 믿지 못했습니다.
예수님의 동생들은 사람들에게 모욕을 당하는 예수를 말리려 왔던 것입니다.
마리아 역시 엄마 마음으로 아들을 말리러 왔을 것이라고 쉽게 예상할 수 있습니다.
이때 사람들이 당신의 어머니와 동생들이 밖에 와 있다고 말하자, 예수는 누가 내 어머니이며 동생들이냐?
라고 질문하신 후 제자들을 가리키며 나의 어머니와 나의 동생들을 보라 누구든지 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻대로 하는 자가 내 형제요 자매요 어머니이니라(49b-50절) 라고 말씀 하십니다.
우리는 여기서 정확하게 예수님의 가족관을 알 수 있습니다. 혈통적으로 유대인이 예수의 가족이 아닙니다. 심지어 예수를 낳은 마리아도 아닙니다. 같은 엄마의 배를 공유한 형제들도 아닙니다.
예수님과 함께 밥상에서 교제할 수 있는 가족이 되는 유일한 비결은 하늘에 계신 아버지의 뜻대로 하는 것입니다! 아버지의 뜻대로 한다는 것은 예수를 믿는 것과 그 믿는 대로 사는 것을 의미합니다.
그러한 자는 모두 예수의 형제요, 자매요 가족입니다. 그래서 우리는 모두 예수님의 한 식구인 것입니다.
오늘 하루도 맛있는 영적인 양식을 나누며, 함께 아버지의 기뻐하시는 뜻을 행하는 진정한 예수의 식구가 되기를 소원합니다.
The Sign of Jonah
38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.
43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers
46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”
48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
People who form a home through blood ties are called families. A Korean word with a broader meaning similar to family is shik-koo (食口). It literally means a mouth (a person), who eats together by combining the rice, the food, and the mouth.
According to the results of research by scholars, it is said that eating together increases the likelihood of the other person.
Jesus, after forgiving the sinners, almost always asked for or often suggested first to share a meal. Because of this, the Pharisees and teachers of the law accused Jesus of being a glutton and a drunkard (11:19).
At that time, the meaning of having a meal together is a visual indication that salvation has come to the forgiven believers. To eat together is to confirm that they are a family member, and that they have been invited as a family.
In that sense, the Jews were the ones invited to the most precious table, the ones closest to the King of kings’ table.
Nevertheless, they themselves kick (despised) the king's table. Today's scripture is a precious Word that shows how those who have been called as God's chosen people kick (separate) themselves off the table, and who can become the true children of the King and the true family of Jesus.
A Wicked Generation Seeks Signs (verses 38-45)
Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said, the original meaning of the word said is “answer”. They said in response to Jesus' actions and words. When the Pharisees and teachers of the law failed to argue about the disciples’ eating of the grains and Jesus’ healing of the man with a shriveled hand on the Sabbath day, they contemplated that Jesus cast out demons by the power of Satan. At this, the Lord rebuked them severely that the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit cannot be forgiven. In response, they suddenly asked for a sign. Then Jesus criticized them that a wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! (v. 39).
Why did Jesus say this? Since chapter 8, they continue to hear or see Jesus' miracles.
After seeing many miracles, they said it was done through the power of Beelzebul. And yet asking for another sign? They must have been out of their mind.
Whatever signs they saw, they decided not to believe. To them, Jesus is simply a magician, and He can never be the Messiah. Hence they are a wicked and adulterous generation. Which means evil and unfaithful ones, originally used when referring to Gentiles.
And they are now worse than the Gentiles. The sign of Jonah is the only last sign Jesus can show them. The sign of Jonah is an event where Jesus dies on the cross, buried, and raises again after three days. This will be a sign of Jesus both as the Messiah, the Savior, and as the Judge.
Jesus takes the representatives of the Gentiles and condemns the Jews.
The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it (v 41).
Nineveh is the capital of Assyria, which destroyed northern Israel in B.C. 722. This is why Jonah hated giving them the message of repentance. However, when they heard Jonah's rough (unenthusiastic) message, the whole country fasted and repented including the animals.
This kind of work took place just because of the words Jonah cried out, and even though someone greater than Jonah showed more miracles, it did not matter at all. This is why there is no excuse for this generation. At judgment, the people of Nineveh will condemn them.
The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it (v42).
This is about what is recorded in 1 Kings 10:1-13, and refers to the incident that Queen Sheba visited to hear the rumors of Solomon and to hear his wisdom. Queen Sheba is a foreign woman who loved the personified wisdom, Jesus, who is the Truth.
Queen Sheba fell in love only by hearing Solomon's wisdom, and the Pharisees and teachers of the law will be condemned by her on judgment because they failed to recognize Jesus, who is greater than Solomon and the source of all wisdom.
They accused Jesus as Satan, but in fact, Jesus tells them that they are being favored by demons. The Lord speaks figuratively about the future of this generation:

Jesus' True Family
Likewise, Israel and the Jews were invited to the table of Jesus, but they themselves refused the precious place.
Then, who is the family who will enjoy that table of blessing with Jesus now?
One day, Jesus' mother and brothers came to talk to him.
Mark detailed the reason why Jesus' family came to him:
When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind” (Mark 3:21)
James, the younger brother of Jesus, who became the senior pastor of the early church, did not believe in Jesus until this time.
Jesus' brothers came to stop Jesus from being insulted by people.
We can easily predict that Mary, with a mother’s heart, also came to protect her son from all troubles.
When people told Jesus, “your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you”, Jesus responded “who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to His disciples, He said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother” (v49b-50).
We can accurately see Jesus' family view here. Jews, by lineage, are not Jesus' family. Not even Mary, who gave birth to Jesus. Neither brothers share the same mother's womb.
The only secret to becoming a family where we can have fellowship with Jesus at the table is to do the will of our Father in heaven! Doing the Father's will means believing in Jesus and living in accordance to what we believe.
All such people are brothers, sisters, and family members of Jesus.
That is why we are all families of Jesus.
Today, let us share delicious spiritual food and become a true family of Jesus by doing the Father's will of joy.
