(21) 제자 중에 또 한 사람이 이르되 주여 내가 먼저 가서 내 아버지를 장사하게 허락하옵소서
(22) 예수께서 이르시되 죽은 자들이 그들의 죽은 자들을 장사하게 하고 너는 나를 따르라 하시니라
(23) 배에 오르시매 제자들이 따랐더니
(24) 바다에 큰 놀이 일어나 배가 물결에 덮이게 되었으되 예수께서는 주무시는지라
(25) 그 제자들이 나아와 깨우며 이르되 주여 구원하소서 우리가 죽겠나이다
(26) 예수께서 이르시되 어찌하여 무서워하느냐 믿음이 작은 자들아 하시고 곧 일어나사 바람과 바다를 꾸짖으시니 아주 잔잔하게 되거늘
(27) 그 사람들이 놀랍게 여겨 이르되 이이가 어떠한 사람이기에 바람과 바다도 순종하는가 하더라
(28) 또 예수께서 건너편 가다라 지방에 가시매 귀신 들린 자 둘이 무덤 사이에서 나와 예수를 만나니 그들은 몹시 사나워 아무도 그 길로 지나갈 수 없을 지경이더라
(29) 이에 그들이 소리 질러 이르되 하나님의 아들이여 우리가 당신과 무슨 상관이 있나이까 때가 이르기 전에 우리를 괴롭게 하려고 여기 오셨나이까 하더니
(30) 마침 멀리서 많은 돼지 떼가 먹고 있는지라
(31) 귀신들이 예수께 간구하여 이르되 만일 우리를 쫓아 내시려면 돼지 떼에 들여 보내 주소서 하니
(32) 그들에게 가라 하시니 귀신들이 나와서 돼지에게로 들어가는지라 온 떼가 비탈로 내리달아 바다에 들어가서 물에서 몰사하거늘
(33) 치던 자들이 달아나 시내에 들어가 이 모든 일과 귀신 들린 자의 일을 고하니
(34) 온 시내가 예수를 만나려고 나가서 보고 그 지방에서 떠나시기를 간구하더라
사람들은 예수님의 능력과 이적을 보고 주변으로 몰려들기 시작합니다. 하지만 예수님은 무리가 당신을 에워싸는 것을 보고 제자들에게 건너편으로 가기를 명하십니다. 사람들이 왜, 예수님을 에워 쌓을까요? 예수님의 이적을 보고, 자신들의 필요를 채우고자 하는 욕망이 불일 듯 일어났을 것입니다. 그래서 예수님은 제자들이 현혹되지 않도록 유혹의 자리를 떠나라고 명령하십니다. 제자의 길은 이런 길입니다.
온전하지 못한 제자의 예 (18-22절)
한 서기관이 예수님 앞에 나와 어디로 가시든지 자신은 따를 것이라고 고백합니다. 외관상으로는 대단한 고백입니다. 하지만 예수님의 답변은 한마디로 나의 가는 길은 의식주의 결핍은 물론, 배척 받는 삶(v.20) 이라고 소개합니다. 그리고 그 배척 받음의 결국은 십자가의 죽음입니다. 서기관은 이것을 알았을까요?
그는 왜 예수님을 따른다고 고백했을까요? 아마도 예수님의 신비로운 능력을 보고 현혹되었을 것입니다.
이것은 잘못된 제자도의 대표적인 유형입니다. 칼빈은 다음과 같이 주석했습니다. 무분별하고 성급한 생각으로 제자가 되겠다는 이 서기관은 아직 준비가 덜 되었다는 증거이다.
21절은 바람직하지 않은 제자도의 두 번째 유형을 보여줍니다. 그는 군중이나 무리가 아닌 제자입니다. 이미 믿는 자이고, 예수를 섬기는 자입니다. 이는 제자 중에도 이런 사람이 있을 수 있다는 것입니다. 그의 아버지가 돌아가셨고, 그는 예수께 장례를 허락해 달라고 요청합니다. 유대인의 관습에서 부친상의 경우 매일 기도, 율법공부, 성전 봉사, 할례준수, 심지어 유월절 양 잡는 것까지 유보될 정도로 중요한 일입니다. 그런데 예수님은 예상 외의 말씀을 하십니다. 죽은 자들이 그들의 죽은 자를 장사하게 하고(22)
이 말씀은 제자들과는 달리 예수를 믿지 않는 자들은 영적으로 죽은 자임을 보여줍니다.
그러므로 영적으로 죽은 자들이 돌아가신 아버지 장례를 하도록 하고 너는 나를 따르라 는 말씀입니다.
기독교는 효의 종교입니다. 십계명으로 명하실 정도로 효는 기독교의 절대적 교훈입니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 예수를 따르는 문제는 그 어떤 인륜, 천륜보다 앞서는 것임을 말씀하십니다.
제자의 삶은 죽음과 관련된 삶이 아니라, 생명과 관련된 삶이어야 함을 보여주시는 것입니다.
제자도가 무엇인가요? 의식주 문제보다 앞서는 것입니다. 심지어 인간관계, 천륜으로 맺어진 관계보다도 앞서는 것이 제자도입니다. 부모나 자녀를 예수보다 더 사랑하는 자나 손에 쟁기를 들고 뒤를 돌아보는 자는 하나님 나라에 합당하지 않습니다. 나는 어떤 제자인가요?
주님을 따르고 깨우는 제자 (23-27절)
마태복음 8-9장은 이적이 장입니다. 10개의 연속되는 이적을 통해서 예수가 누구이신지를 보여줍니다.
바다를 잔잔하게 하신 이적은 공관복음(막 4:35-41; 눅 8:22-25)에 모두 기록되어 있는 기사입니다.
그런데 중요한 차이가 있습니다. 마가나 누가는 제자도와 연결된 교훈이 아니지만 마태는 밀접하게 연결되어 있습니다. 제자들이 바다를 건너간 이유는 말씀에 순종하였기 때문입니다.
비록 제자들이 온전하지는 않지만, 앞선 바람직하지 않은 2명의 제자들과는 다른 모습입니다.
일단 순종한 것이 귀합니다. 이처럼 마태는 제자도와 연관하여 본 이적을 사용하고 있습니다.
마태는 다른 저자들과 다르게 풍랑이라는 단어 대신 큰 지진(세이스모스 메가스seismos megas)이라는 단어를 사용했습니다. 큰 지진(놀)은 마태가 매우 중요한 시점에 사용하는 단어로, 예수님의 십자가 죽음과 부활에 이 단어를 사용합니다. 그러니까 마태는 바다를 잠잠케 하는 이적을 통해서 예고적으로 예수가 누구인지를 말하고 있는 것입니다. 이이가 어떤 사람이기에?(v.27) 가 마태의 핵심질문입니다.
이 이적을 통해서 우리는 말씀을 따르는 제자들의 삶에도 큰 놀(큰 지진)이 오는데, 그럴 때는 신속하게 예수님께 기도해야 함을 배울 수 있습니다. 또한 두려움과 믿음 적은 것은 동의어임을 알아야 합니다.
가다라 지방의 두 광인 (28-34절)
가다라(거라사) 광인 사건은 공관복음서(막 5:1-20; 눅 8:26-39)에 모두 등장하는 사건입니다.
이 이적은 10가지 연속되는 이적 중 5번째 이적입니다. 이 사건의 의미는 무엇일까요?
하나님의 아들임을 증명하는 사건
의외로 귀신들린 자들의 입에서 그 해답을 찾을 수 있습니다. 그들은 예수를 한 눈에 알아봅니다. 하나님의 아들이여(v.29) 그렇습니다! 본 이적을 통해서 마태가 우리에게 알려주고 싶은 것은 예수가 지극히 높으신 하나님의 아들이 맞습니다 입니다. 심지어 귀신들도 알고 떠는데, 하나님을 믿는다는 제자들이 예수가 누군지를 모른다면 말이 되겠습니까? 만일 그렇다면 문제가 있는 것입니다.
나는 예수가 누구신지 분명히 알고 있습니까? 지식적으로 아는 것과 삶으로 고백하는 것은 전혀 다른 차원입니다. 진정한 지식은 경험으로 그 대상을 아는 것입니다.
귀신들은 예수께 항변합니다. 이미 우리가 패했고, 우리의 운명은 정해져 있고, 아직 심판의 때가 이르지 않았는데 어찌 오셔서 우리를 두렵게 하느냐는 항변입니다. 여기서 얻을 수 있는 지식은 예수님의 권세에 마귀들까지도 순종한다는 사실입니다. 또한 마귀는 이미 패했으며 반드시 종말, 곧 하나님의 심판의 때가 있다는 것입니다. 하지만 완전한 심판이 있기까지는 패한 사탄의 권세와 치열한 전투가 있다는 것도 잊어서는 안 됩니다.
하나님의 아들보다 돈을 섬기는 세대
귀신들은 예수님께 무저갱에 들어가는 것이 자신들의 마지막 운명이지만, 아직 때가 아니니 돼지 떼에 들어가기를 허락해 달라고 부탁합니다. 이에 예수께서 허락하시자, 귀신들은 돼지 떼를 몰아 바다에 수장 시킵니다. 왜 예수님은 귀신들이 돼지 떼에게 들어가는 것을 허락하셨을까요? 분명히 주님은 돼지 떼가 죽을 것과 그것이 그 주인에게 엄청난 손해라는 것을 아셨을 텐데 말입니다.
그 뒤에 그 마을 사람들의 반응을 보면 예수님이 무엇 때문에 그리 하셨는지 알 수 있습니다. 그들은 주님이 자신들의 마을에서 떠나기를 간구합니다. 왜 그랬을까요? 물질적 손해 때문입니다. 사람들은 한 생명이 온 천하보다 귀하다는 말씀에는 아멘 하지만 실제로 한 영혼을 구하는데 필요한 값을 지불하는 것에는 주저합니다. 그 고통 받던 영혼이 자유함을 얻었습니다. 누가는 심지어 그가 구원을 받았다고 기록합니다(눅 8:36). 구원의 값을 내야 한다면 당신은 얼마까지 내겠습니까?
이것이 마태가 우리에게 묻는 질문이 아닐까요?
제자도는 그 어떤 물질적인 것이나 인간적인 관계보다 중요하고 급한 문제입니다. 말씀에 순종하지만 예기치 않은 풍랑이 올 때도 있습니다. 또한 아무리 선하고 귀한 일을 해도 사람들에게 배척당할 수도 있습니다. 그래도 제자는 그 길을 걸어야 합니다. 왜냐하면 이미 구원 받은 자들이기 때문입니다.
그리고 그 값이 돼지 2000마리 정도의 값이 아닌, 배척당하신 예수님 피의 값이기 때문입니다.
The Cost of Following Jesus
18When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
20Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
21Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
22But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
Jesus Calms the Storm
23Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
26He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
27The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men
28When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29“What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”
30Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”
32He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.
People began to flock around to see the power and miracles of Jesus. But when Jesus saw a crowd surrounding him, he commanded his disciples to go across the lake. Why did people surround Jesus? Seeing the miracle of Jesus, the desire to meet their needs must have sparked fire. So Jesus commanded his disciples to leave the place of temptation so that they would not be dazzled. This is the discipleship.
An example of an incomplete disciple (verses 18-22)
A scribe come before Jesus and confesses that he will follow wherever he goes. Apparently, it's a great confession. However, Jesus' answer in one word was that my path is not only a lack of food, clothing, and shelter, but also a life of rejection (v.20). And the end of that rejection is the death of the cross. Did the scribe know this?
Why did he confess to follow Jesus? Perhaps he was dazzled by the mystical power of Jesus.
This is a typical type of false discipleship. Calvin commented: This scribe, who wants to become a disciple with reckless and hasty thoughts, is evidence that he is not yet ready.
Verse 21 shows a second type of discipleship that is undesirable. He is a disciple, not people in the crowd. He was already a believer and a person who served Jesus. This means that some disciples may be like him. His father had passed away, and he asked Jesus to allow him to go to the funeral. In Jewish customs, the funeral is very important that daily prayers, the study of the law, temple service, circumcision, and even the Passover sheep are excused. But Jesus spoke unexpectedly. Let the dead bury their own dead (22).
This word shows that those who do not believe in Jesus are spiritually dead, unlike the disciples.
Therefore, let the spiritually dead have funeral for their deceased father and Jesus told him, “Follow me.”
Christianity is a religion of filial piety. Filial piety, as commanded by the Ten Commandments, is an absolute lesson of Christianity.
Nevertheless, he tells us that the following Jesus is ahead of any moral laws.
It shows that the life of a disciple is not a life related to death, but a life related to life.
What is discipleship? It precedes the food, clothing, and shelter. The discipleship is even ahead of human relationships and kinship. Those who love their parents or children more than Jesus, or those who look back with a plow in hand, are not worthy of the kingdom of God. What kind of disciple am I?
Disciple who follows and wakes up the Lord (verses 23-27)
Matthew chapter 8-9 is a miracle chapters. It shows who Jesus is through ten successive miracles.
The miracle of calming the sea is recorded in all of Synoptic Gospel (Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25).
But there is very important difference. Although Mark and Luke are not linked a lesson to discipleship, Matthew is closely linked to it. The reason the disciples crossed the sea is because they obeyed the Word.
Although the disciples are not perfect, they are different from the two undesirable disciples earlier.
It is very precious to obey first. As such, Matthew is using this miracle in connection with discipleship.
Unlike other authors, Matthew used the word great earthquake, (seismos megas) instead of the word storm. Great earthquake (noll) is a word that Matthew used at a very important point, and he used it for Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. So Matthew is telling Jesus who Jesus is through a miracle that calms the sea. “What kind of person is this?” (v.27) is Matthew's key question.
Through this miracle, we can learn to pray quickly to Jesus when a great noll (a great earthquake) comes even to the lives of the disciples who follow the Word. Also, we should know that fear and less faith are synonymous.
Two demon possessed men in the Gadarenes (verses 28-34)
The Gadarenes (Gorasa) demon possessed men’s incident appears in all of the Synoptic Gospels (Mark 5:1-20; Luke 8:26-39).
This is the 5th of 10 miracles in a row. What is the meaning of this incident?
Incident proving that He is the Son of God
Surprisingly, we can find the answer in the mouths of those possessed by demons. They recognized Jesus at a glance. Son of God (v.29) Yes! What Matthew wants to tell us through this miracle is that Jesus is the Most High Son of God. Would it make sense if even demons know and tremble, but the disciples who believe in God don't know who Jesus is? If so, there is a problem.
Do I have a clear idea of who Jesus is? Knowing intellectually and professing by life are a whole different dimension. Real knowledge is knowing the object by experience.
The demons protest Jesus. We are already defeated, our destiny is fixed, and the time of judgment has not yet come, so it is a plea for why you come to scare us. The lesson we can learn from this is that even demons obey the power of Jesus. In addition, the devil has already been defeated, and there must be an end, the time of God's judgment. However, we must not forget that there is a fierce battle with the power of the defeated Satan until there is a complete judgment.
The generation that serves money more than the son of God
The demons ask Jesus to allow them to enter the herd of pigs, although it is their last destiny to enter the abyss, since it is not yet the time. When Jesus gives permission, the demons drive a herd of pigs and put them in the sea. Why did Jesus allow demons to enter the pigs? Obviously the Lord knew that a herd of pigs would die and that it would be a great loss to its owner.
Then, if you look at the reactions of the villagers, you can see what Jesus did. They asked the Lord to leave their village. Why? Because of material damage. People say amen that one life is more valuable than the whole world, but hesitate to pay the price when it really takes to save a soul. The tormented soul was freed. Luke even wrote that they were saved (Luke 8:36). How much would you pay if you had to pay the price of salvation?
Isn’t it the question Matthew asks us?
Discipleship is very important and urgent matter than any material thing or human relationship. We obey the Word, but there are times when unexpected storms come. Also, no matter how good and precious you do, you can be rejected by people. Still, the disciple must walk that path. Because they are already saved.
And not for the price of 2,000 pigs, but for the price of Jesus' blood who was rejected.
