(13) 내가 하나님의 아들의 이름을 믿는 너희에게 이것을 쓰는 것은 너희로 하여금 너희에게 영생이 있음을 알게 하려 함이라 (14) 그를 향하여 우리가 가진 바 담대함이 이것이니 그의 뜻대로 무엇을 구하면 들으심이라 (15) 우리가 무엇이든지 구하는 바를 들으시는 줄을 안즉 우리가 그에게 구한 그것을 얻은 줄을 또한 아느니라
(16) 누구든지 형제가 사망에 이르지 아니하는 죄 범하는 것을 보거든 구하라 그리하면 사망에 이르지 아니하는 범죄자들을 위하여 그에게 생명을 주시리라 사망에 이르는 죄가 있으니 이에 관하여 나는 구하라 하지 않노라 (17) 모든 불의가 죄로되 사망에 이르지 아니하는 죄도 있도다
(18) 하나님께로부터 난 자는 다 범죄하지 아니하는 줄을 우리가 아노라 하나님께로부터 나신 자가 그를 지키시매 악한 자가 그를 만지지도 못하느니라 (19) 또 아는 것은 우리는 하나님께 속하고 온 세상은 악한 자 안에 처한 것이며 (20) 또 아는 것은 하나님의 아들이 이르러 우리에게 지각을 주사 우리로 참된 자를 알게 하신 것과 또한 우리가 참된 자 곧 그의 아들 예수 그리스도 안에 있는 것이니 그는 참 하나님이시요 영생이시라
(21) 자녀들아 너희 자신을 지켜 우상에게서 멀리하라
유전자DNA의 비밀은 참으로 신기합니다. 교회에서 성도들을 보면 그 자녀가 엄마와 아빠를 얼마나 쏙 빼 닮았는지 모릅니다. 저희 가정만 해도 저는 잘 모르겠는데 보시는 분들마다 아이들이 저를 닮았다고 많이들 말씀 하십니다. 아이들이 성품, 식성, 생활습관까지도 부모를 닮는 것을 보면 참으로 신기합니다. 물론 같은 공간에서 생활하고 식사하기 때문에 후천적으로 생활 습관이 닮아가는 것은 자연스럽습니다. 하지만 선천적으로 가지고 태어나는 성향까지도 부모 중 하나를 닮는 것을 볼 때면 놀라울 뿐입니다.
아이들이 마음에 들지 않는 행동을 할 때 마다 부부는 서로 주장합니다. 당신을 닮았다고…
왜 그렇게 서로 우길까요? 부모 안에 있는 하나님의 성품 때문입니다. 악한 부모라도 아이들이 자신의 악한 모습을 닮는 것을 좋아하지 않습니다. 예수님은 이러한 우리의 성품에 대해 너희가 악한 자라도 좋은 것으로 자식에게 줄 줄 알거든 하물며 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께서 구하는 자에게 좋은 것으로 주시지 않겠느냐(마 7:11) 라고 이미 말씀 하셨습니다.
우리가 비록 죄인이지만 자녀가 우리의 악한 모습을 닮는 것은 원하지 않고, 오로지 좋은 모습만 닮기를 원한다는 것입니다. 하물며 선하신 하나님 아버지의 우리를 향한 마음은 어떨까요?
내가 거룩하니 너희도 거룩할지어다(레 11:45) 에 이미 모두 표현되어 있습니다.
하나님은 악이 없으신 선하신 분입니다. 당연히 자녀들이 아버지 하나님 모든 것을 닮기를 원하십니다.
세상을 이기는 믿음과 증거(1-12)
사도 요한은 예수 그리스도를 믿는 자마다 하나님께로부터 난 자라고 설명합니다. 만일 진짜 자녀라면 당연히 부모를 사랑하게 되어 있고, 정상적인 가정이라면 부모가 낳은 형제 자매가 서로 사랑하게 된다는 것입니다. 부모를 진정으로 사랑한다면, 같은 부모에게서 난 형제 역시 사랑할 수 밖에 없습니다.
그래서 요한은 하나님을 사랑하는 것이 그의 계명을 지키는 것이고, 그의 계명은 부모이신 하나님과 형제인 또 다른 하나님의 자녀를 사랑하는 것이라고 말합니다(1-3).
이제 요한은 세상과의 영적인 전쟁에서 하나님의 자녀들의 승리를 확신합니다. 하나님께로부터 난 자는 그 믿음으로 승리(4)를 얻습니다. 그 믿음은 예수께서 하나님의 아들이심을 믿는 것(5)입니다.
믿음의 대상은 물과 피로 임하신 예수 그리스도입니다. 여기서 물과 피는 과연 무엇을 의미할까요?
십자가에서 흘리신 물과 피Augustine, 세례와 성찬Luther, Calvin, 정결과 희생Plummer, 세례 요한에게 받은 물세례와 십자가의 대속의 보혈Tertullian, Stott이라는 견해들이 있습니다.
모든 견해가 일리가 있습니다. 하지만 가장 타당한 견해는 마지막 견해라고 생각합니다.
요한 공동체를 위협하던 당시에 케린투스Cerinthus와 같은 영지주의자들은 하늘에 있는 그리스도께서 요한의 물세례를 받을 때 예수에게 임하셨고, 십자가에 달리기 직전에 떠났다는 어이없는 주장으로 그리스도의 성육신을 부정했습니다. 요한은 이러한 영지주의의 주장에 대항하여 그리스도께서 육체를 입고 오셔서 세례를 받으시고, 십자가에서 피 흘리신 사실을 강력하게 주장하고 있는 것입니다.
이러한 성육신을 확실하게 증언하는 이가 성령과 물과 피이고, 이 셋은 합하여 하나(7-8)입니다.
진리의 영이신 성령은 그리스도께서 세례를 받으실 때 비둘기처럼 임하셨고, 십자가를 지실 때 그것을 감당할 힘을 주셨습니다. 그러므로 성령, 물(세례), 피(십자가)는 곧 하나인 성령의 사역이었습니다.
이처럼 예수 그리스도의 성육신은 진리의 영이신 하나님, 곧 성령이 증언(9)하는 것입니다.
그러므로 예수를 믿는 자는 자기 안에 증거, 곧 성령이 있습니다. 동시에 예수를 믿지 않는 자는 하나님의 증언을 무시함으로 하나님을 거짓말쟁이로 만드는 죄악을 범하는 것(10)입니다.
하나님의 증언 외에 또 다른 증거는 아들 안에 있는 영생을 우리에게 주신 것입니다.
그러므로 아들이 있는 자에게는 생명이 있고, 아들이 없는 자에게는 생명 역시 없습니다(11-12).
영생을 아는 지식(13-21절)
마지막 단락은 안다 라는 단어가 6회나 등장합니다. 하나님과 아들은 믿는 것은 반드시 지식을 동반해야 합니다. 먼저 알아야 하는 지식은 믿는 자에게는 영생이 있다는 사실(13)입니다. 사도 요한이 요한 일서를 쓰는 목적이 바로 아들을 믿는 자들에게는 영생이 있음을 알게 하는 것입니다.
둘째로 알아야 할 것은 그의 뜻대로 무엇이든지 구하면 들어주신다는 사실(14)입니다. 이것은 예수님이 마지막 만찬에서 하신 약속(요 14:14)이기도 합니다. 진짜 아들을 믿고, 하나님 안에 거하는 자는 기도의 능력을 사용할 줄 알고, 그것을 체험하는 자입니다. 여기서 중요한 것은 그의 뜻대로 구하는 것입니다.
그런 기도는 100% 응답을 받습니다. 대표적인 실례는 5만번 기도응답을 받은 죠지 뮬러George Müller의 기도입니다.
이 놀라운 기도의 능력을 죄 범한 자를 구하는 용도로 긴급하게 사용해야 합니다.
그런데 요한은 죄를 사망에 이르는 죄와 그렇지 않은 죄로 구분(16-17)합니다.
어떤 죄가 사망에 이르지 않고, 어떤 죄가 사망에 이르는 죄일까요? 예수님은 모든 죄는 사함을 얻지만, 성령을 모독하는 죄는 사함을 얻지 못한다고 말씀(마 12:31) 하셨습니다.
영지주의자들과 같은 신앙과 주장을 유지하는 자들은 결국 죄 사함을 받을 수 없다는 의미입니다.
그러한 자들은 몇 번 권면을 한 후에는 상대하지 않는 것(마 18:17) 이 옳습니다.
셋째로 알아야 할 것은 하나님께로 난 자는 다 범죄하지 않는다는 사실(18)입니다.
이 말의 의미는 성도는 완전하게 범죄하지 않는 것이 아닌, 죄를 멀리하려는 기본적인 태도와 혹시 범죄 했을 경우 진정으로 하나님 앞에 회개하는 것을 의미하는 것이라고 이미 설명했습니다.
넷째로 알아야 할 것은 하나님의 자녀는 하나님께 속했고, 세상은 악한 자에게 속했음(19)을 알아야 합니다. 이것은 반드시 하나님이 마지막 날에 양과 염소를 구별하는 심판이 있음을 전제로 합니다.
마지막으로 알아야 할 것은 우리가 하나님을 아는 것은 참된 자이신 예수께서 주신 은혜(20)입니다. 그러므로 우상숭배와 같은 영지주의자들의 사상을 멀리(21)해야 합니다.
세상에는 하나님에 대해 듣고, 알고 있으면서도 하나님과 그의 아들을 믿지 않는 수많은 자들이 있습니다.
가만 생각해보면 저 역시 그러한 사람들 가운데 충분히 머물러 있을 수 있었다고 생각이 됩니다.
생각만 해도 아찔합니다! 어떻게 우리가 이렇게 새벽에까지 모여 하나님을 찬양하고, 그의 아들을 믿으며 사랑한다고 고백할 수 있었을까요? 모두 하나님의 은혜인줄로 믿습니다.
어제 새벽에 기도하는 가운데 감사가 넘쳐 흘렀습니다. 너무 귀한 공동체를 허락하시고 서로 사랑으로 배려하는 우리 성도들이 너무 감사하고 감사했습니다. 생각해보니 지금까지 지나온 모든 길이 감사할 것뿐 입니다. 그 중에 가장 감사한 것은 역시 우리를 하나님 자녀 삼아 주신 것입니다.
주님은 2021년 우리에게 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 아뢰라 고 말씀하십니다.
믿음을 가지고, 그의 뜻대로 감사함으로 모든 구할 것을 아뢰는 성도 됩시다!
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. 19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
The secret of genetic DNA is truly amazing. When we look at the congregation members in our church, many children look very much like their mother and father. Even in my family, not that I totally agree, everyone tells me that my children resemble me. It is amazing to see that children resemble their parents in terms of character, diet and lifestyle. Of course, because we (family) live and eat in the same space, children naturally imitate the lifestyle of their parents.
However, it is surprising to see even the innate tendency to be born with also resembles one of the parents. Whenever children do something the parents dislike, husband and wife tend to argue with each other, “our son (or daughter) resembles you...”
Why do we insist with each other so much? It is because of God's character in each parent. Even wicked parents do not like their children to resemble their wicked characteristics. Jesus already mentioned this, if you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! (Matt 7:11).
Even though we are sinners, we do not want our children to resemble our evil nature, but rather only good aspects. How much more is our good Heavenly Father's heart for us? All this has been already expressed in therefore be holy, because I am holy (Lev 11:45).
God is good without evil. Obviously, He wants His children to be like God the Father.
Faith and Evidence to Overcome the World (verses 1-12)
The apostle John explains that everyone who believes in Jesus Christ is born of God.
A real child will naturally love their parents. And in a normal family, the siblings born to the same parents will love one another. Because if one truly loves their parents, he/she has no choice but to love their siblings of the same parents. So John says that loving God is to carry out His commandments, and His commandments are to love God as our parent, and love another child of God as our brother (1-3).
Now John is convinced of the victory of God's children in the spiritual warfare with the world. For everyone born of God overcomes the world, even our faith (4). And the faith is to believe that Jesus is the Son of God (5).
The object of our faith is Jesus Christ, who came by water and blood. What do water and blood mean here?
There are many views: Water and Blood shed from the Cross (Augustine), Baptism and the Holy Communion (Luther & Calvin), Purity and Sacrifice (Plummer), and Water Baptism from John the Baptist and the Blood of the atonement of the Cross (Tertullian & Stott).
Every commentary makes sense. However, in my opinion, the most valid view is the last one. When John’s community was threatened by Gnostics, such as Cerinthus, which denied the incarnation of Christ with the ridiculous claim that Christ in heaven 'came' to Jesus when He was baptized by John and 'left' just before He was crucified.
In opposition to this claim of Gnosticism, John strongly asserts that Christ came in the flesh, was baptized, and shed blood on the cross.
For there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water and the blood are the ones who surely testify of this incarnation, and three are in agreement (7-8).
The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, came like a dove when Christ was baptized, and gave the strength to bear it when He took up the cross.
Therefore, the Holy Spirit, the water (baptism), and the blood (the cross) were the works of the Holy Spirit as one.
Likewise, the incarnation of Jesus Christ is the testimony of God, the Spirit of truth (9).
Therefore, whoever believes in Jesus has the evidence, the Holy Spirit, in themselves. At the same time, whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son (10).
Besides God's testimony, another evidence is that He gave us eternal life in the Son.
Therefore, whoever has the Son has life, and whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life (11-12).
Knowledge of Eternal Life (verses 13-21)
In the very last paragraph, the word know appears six times. To believe in God and the Son must accompany knowledge. The first thing we need to know is that believers have eternal life (13). The purpose of the apostle John's writing of 1 John is for us to know that those who believe in the Son have eternal life.
The second knowledge is the fact that if we ask for anything according to His will, He hears us (14). This is also the promise Jesus made at the Last Supper (John 14:14). Whoever believes in the real Son, and dwells in God, are those who know how to use the power of prayer and experience it. The important point here is to ask "according to His will".
Such prayers receive 100% answers. A prime example is the prayer of George Müller, who received 50,000 answers to his prayers.
This wonderful power of prayer must be used urgently to save those who have sinned.
However, John divides sins into one that leads to death and others that do not (16-17).
Which sin does not lead to death, and which sin leads to death? Jesus said that every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven (Matt 12:31).
This means that those who maintain the beliefs and assertions of Gnosticism will not be able to receive forgiveness of their sins after all.
It is right to treat them as pagans if they refuse to listen (Matthew 18:17).
The third knowledge is that anyone born of God does not continue to sin (18).
It has already been explained that the meaning of this word does not mean that the believers are not completely sinless, but that it means a basic attitude to abstain from sin and to truly repent before God if they have committed sins.
The fourth knowledge is to know that children of God belong to God, and the whole world is under the control of the evil one (19). This necessarily presupposes that in the last days there is God’s judgment to distinct sheep from goats.
The last knowledge is it is the grace given by Jesus, who is the true Son of God, that we know God (20). Hence we must keep ourselves from the gnostic ideas such as idolatry (21).
There are many people in the world who hear and know about God, but do not believe in God and His Son. It has come to my mind that I could have also stayed well among such people.
Just thinking about it makes me faint!
How could we all come together in this early morning to praise God and confess that we love and believe in His Son? I believe this too is God’s grace.
While I was praying yesterday morning, thanksgiving overflowed in me. I was so grateful and thankful for our members, who became a very precious church community and care for one another with love. As I come to think of it, I am only grateful for all the paths that I have passed thus far. Among them, I am most grateful for having made us the children of God.
The Lord is telling us, in 2021, to present our requests to God with thanksgiving.
With faith, let us become believers who ask all things, according to His will, with thanksgiving!
