(1) 보라 아버지께서 어떠한 사랑을 우리에게 베푸사 하나님의 자녀라 일컬음을 받게 하셨는가, 우리가 그러하도다 그러므로 세상이 우리를 알지 못함은 그를 알지 못함이라
(2) 사랑하는 자들아 우리가 지금은 하나님의 자녀라 장래에 어떻게 될지는 아직 나타나지 아니하였으나 그가 나타나시면 우리가 그와 같을 줄을 아는 것은 그의 참모습 그대로 볼 것이기 때문이니
(3) 주를 향하여 이 소망을 가진 자마다 그의 깨끗하심과 같이 자기를 깨끗하게 하느니라
(4) 죄를 짓는 자마다 불법을 행하나니 죄는 불법이라
(5) 그가 우리 죄를 없애려고 나타나신 것을 너희가 아나니 그에게는 죄가 없느니라
(6) 그 안에 거하는 자마다 범죄하지 아니하나니 범죄하는 자마다 그를 보지도 못하였고 그를 알지도 못하였느니라
(7) 자녀들아 아무도 너희를 미혹하지 못하게 하라 의를 행하는 자는 그의 의로우심과 같이 의롭고
(8) 죄를 짓는 자는 마귀에게 속하나니 마귀는 처음부터 범죄함이라 하나님의 아들이 나타나신 것은 마귀의 일을 멸하려 하심이라
(9) 하나님께로부터 난 자마다 죄를 짓지 아니하나니 이는 하나님의 씨가 그의 속에 거함이요 그도 범죄하지 못하는 것은 하나님께로부터 났음이라
(10) 이러므로 하나님의 자녀들과 마귀의 자녀들이 드러나나니 무릇 의를 행하지 아니하는 자나 또는 그 형제를 사랑하지 아니하는 자는 하나님께 속하지 아니하니라
(11) 우리는 서로 사랑할지니 이는 너희가 처음부터 들은 소식이라
(12) 가인 같이 하지 말라 그는 악한 자에게 속하여 그 아우를 죽였으니 어떤 이유로 죽였느냐 자기의 행위는 악하고 그의 아우의 행위는 의로움이라
(13) 형제들아 세상이 너희를 미워하여도 이상히 여기지 말라
(14) 우리는 형제를 사랑함으로 사망에서 옮겨 생명으로 들어간 줄을 알거니와 사랑하지 아니하는 자는 사망에 머물러 있느니라
(15) 그 형제를 미워하는 자마다 살인하는 자니 살인하는 자마다 영생이 그 속에 거하지 아니하는 것을 너희가 아는 바라
(16) 그가 우리를 위하여 목숨을 버리셨으니 우리가 이로써 사랑을 알고 우리도 형제들을 위하여 목숨을 버리는 것이 마땅하니라
(17) 누가 이 세상의 재물을 가지고 형제의 궁핍함을 보고도 도와 줄 마음을 닫으면 하나님의 사랑이 어찌 그 속에 거하겠느냐
(18) 자녀들아 우리가 말과 혀로만 사랑하지 말고 행함과 진실함으로 하자
(19) 이로써 우리가 진리에 속한 줄을 알고 또 우리 마음을 주 앞에서 굳세게 하리니
(20) 이는 우리 마음이 혹 우리를 책망할 일이 있어도 하나님은 우리 마음보다 크시고 모든 것을 아시기 때문이라
(21) 사랑하는 자들아 만일 우리 마음이 우리를 책망할 것이 없으면 하나님 앞에서 담대함을 얻고
(22) 무엇이든지 구하는 바를 그에게서 받나니 이는 우리가 그의 계명을 지키고 그 앞에서 기뻐하시는 것을 행함이라
(23) 그의 계명은 이것이니 곧 그 아들 예수 그리스도의 이름을 믿고 그가 우리에게 주신 계명대로 서로 사랑할 것이니라
(24) 그의 계명을 지키는 자는 주 안에 거하고 주는 그의 안에 거하시나니 우리에게 주신 성령으로 말미암아 그가 우리 안에 거하시는 줄을 우리가 아느니라
한 젊은 부부가 있습니다. 양가 부모님들은 모두 지역에서 유명한 목사님들입니다. 여자 쪽 어머니는 교회 부설 어린이 집 원장입니다. 젊은 두 부부 모두 포항에 있는 유명한 기독교 대학교를 졸업했고, 남편은 기독교 방송국인CBS 직원입니다. 두 부부는 첫째 딸 아이와 함께 할 둘째 딸 정인이(당시 8개월)를 입양했습니다. 그리고는 입양가족 TV 쇼에도 출연하여 가정의 화목함을 자랑했습니다.
그런데 이것이 웬일입니까? 입양된 지 8개월 만에 정인이는 싸늘한 주검이 되었습니다. 정인이가 사망한 원인은 췌장절단 및 장기파열입니다. 복부 내에 피가 고이고, 공기가 새어 나와 정인의 뱃속은 점점 썩고 있었던 것 때문이었습니다.
그 외에도 온 몸에 뼈가 하나도 성한 것이 없었습니다. 어떤 골절은 이미 부러졌다가 붙어가고 있었고, 어떤 골절은 얼마 안 된 것도 있었습니다. 정인이가 사망한 병원에 응급실 의사나 부검을 한 의사들은 한 결 같이 지속적인 학대가 있었다고 확신하며 교과서에 실릴 정도의 아동학대 흔적이라고 말합니다. 또한 췌장이나 장기가 파열되는 것은 교통사고를 당하는 정도의 충격이 있어야 가능한 것이라고 말합니다. 사망하기 전날 어린이 집 CCTV에 찍힌 정인이는 아무것도 먹지 못하고, 선생님의 품에만 안겨 있었습니다. 선생님이 안아주지 못할 때는 그저 혼자 멍하니 앉아만 있었습니다.
너무 가슴이 아픈 것은 그 아이가 아프다는 소리조차 못 했다는 사실입니다.
정인이를 입양했던 양부모 아빠의 이름은 안성은입니다. 엄마는 장하영입니다.
아마도 성은은 성령의 은혜라는 의미일 것이고, 하영은 하나님의 영광이라는 의미일 것입니다.
양가 부모님 모두 목사님, 사모님, 기독교 대학, 기독교 직장, 독실한 기독교인, 입양, 성령의 은혜, 하나님의 영광, 그리고 아동 학대, 살해… 전혀 어울리지 않는 조합입니다. 아이가 죽어가는 응급실 대기실에서 인터넷 쇼핑몰로 어묵을 구매하고 있었다는 양부모가 괴물 같습니다.
처음부터 이런 괴물은 아니었을텐데… 언제부터 우리 기독교가 이런 괴물을 만들어 내기 시작했을까요?
세상과 구별되는 하나님의 자녀 (1-12절)
요한은 우리가 하나님의 자녀라 일컬음을 받는 것이 얼마나 값진 하나님의 은혜(1)인지를 감탄합니다.
십자가에서 우리의 모든 죄를 대속하여 죽으신 은혜와 그 피 값으로 우리를 사신 것입니다.
하지만 하나님의 그 은혜를 알지 못하는 세상은 당연히 하나님의 자녀를 이해할 수 없습니다.
간혹 세상 사람들은 금욕, 절제하는 크리스천을 보며 도대체 무슨 재미로 사냐? 라고 묻습니다.
크리스천이 이처럼 구별되는 삶을 사는 이유는 2-3절에 잘 나타나 있습니다. 사랑하는 사람은 서로 닮기를 원하고, 닮아갑니다. 성도 역시 주님을 닮기를 원하는 거룩한 소망이 있습니다.
그리고 주를 향하여 이 소망을 가진 자마다 그의 깨끗하심과 같이 자기를 깨끗하게(3) 합니다.
죄가 없으신 예수님은 아담의 범죄로 세상에 들어온 죄를 없애려고 이 땅에 성육신 하신 것(5)입니다.
그러므로 그 예수 안에 거하는 자마다 범죄하지 않습니다(6). 범죄하지 않는다에 대한 해석은 다양합니다.
Calvin은 요한이 신자의 삶의 원리를 선포한 것으로 보고, 범죄치 아니함을 신자의 이상적인 특징으로 해석합니다. Luther는 그리스도인은 의인인 동시에 죄인이라고 말했습니다.
종합해보면 성도 역시 범죄하지만 회개하고 돌이키며, 늘 작은 죄에도 마음 아파하는 존재라는 것입니다.
이러한 성도의 삶은 세상과 대비됩니다. 하나님께로부터 난 자는 하나님의 씨(복음, 성령, 예수)가 그 속에 있어 죄를 짓거나 범죄하지 못합니다. 이 역시 완전하게 범죄하지 않음을 말하는 것이 아닙니다.
결국 1절에서 말하는 우리에게 베푸신 그 어떠한 사랑으로 말미암아 우리가 하나님의 자녀가 되는 것이기에, 그 은혜로 날마다 죄사함을 받고, 돌이키고, 결단하는 그것이 범죄하지 않는 것입니다.
반면에 그 예수를 모르는 세상은 죄를 짓고, 불법을 행하며, 마귀에 속한 것(8a)입니다.
죄를 없애기 위해 오신 예수님(5)은 결국 마귀의 일을 멸하러 오신 것(8b)입니다.
하나님의 자녀와 마귀의 자녀는 극명하게 드러납니다. 의를 행하지 않고, 그 형제를 사랑하지 않는 자들은 하나님이 아닌 마귀에 속한 자들(10)입니다. 가인과 같은 자들(11)입니다.
행함과 진실함으로 사랑하자 (13-24절)
그러므로 가인이 아벨을 미워하여 죽였던 것처럼, 세상이 성도를 미워하는 것은 이상한 일이 아닙니다.
미워하는 자마다 살인하는 자입니다. 괴물은 하루 아침에 만들어 지는 것이 아닙니다. 마음 속에 미움이 쌓이고 쌓여서 결국에는 살인을 합니다. 성도는 매일 절제와 사랑의 훈련을 해야 합니다. 아마도 정인이 양부모들은 보여지는 겉모습에만 집중하는 신앙생활을 했을 것입니다. 내면은 그렇지 못한데, 보여지는 것은 신앙 있게, 예수님 닮은 것처럼 보여야 했기 때문에… 자신도 속고 다른 사람도 속인 셈입니다.
우리의 형제 사랑은 말과 혀로만 해서는 안됩니다. 이것은 드러나는 행위의 문제가 아닙니다. 중심의 문제입니다. 입양이라는 구체적인 행위가 있었지만, 그것은 사실 말과 혀로 하는 사랑이었을 뿐입니다.
진짜 중심은 남이 알아주든 알아주지 않든 하나님만 바라보고 행하는 행위입니다.
중심과 행동이 일치하는 행위인 것입니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 우리의 행동만 보시는 것이 아니라,
중심과 행동 모두를 아시기 때문(20)입니다.
이렇게 사랑해야 하는 이유는 너무도 자명합니다. 예수께서 우리를 위하여 목숨을 버리셨으므로 우리 역시 형제들을 위하여 목숨을 버리는 것이 마땅(16)합니다.
그러므로 우리가 가진 것(재물, 건강, 능력 등) 을 통하여 형제의 궁핍함을 돌보아야(17) 합니다.
우리가 하나님의 기뻐하시는 것을 행하고 계명을 지키면 하나님 앞에서 담대할 수 있고(21), 무엇이든지 구하는 바를 얻습니다(22a). 그의 계명이 무엇입니까?
그 아들 예수 그리스도의 이름을 믿고, 그가 우리에게 주신 계명대로 서로 사랑하는 것(23)입니다.
이것이 우리가 주안에 주님이 우리 안에 거하는 유일한 방법입니다.
안성은, 장하영. 왜 그들은 그 거룩한 이름과는 전혀 반대되는 행위를 했을까요? 그들은 말과 혀로만 사랑해서는 안 된다는 것을 알고 행함까지 나아갔습니다. 그런데 왜… 행함은 진실함을 반드시 동반해야 합니다. 진실이 결여된 행함은 결국 가식이고 위선이며, 결과적으로 말과 혀로만 하는 것보다 더 악한 결과는 낳습니다. 사도행전5장에 등장하는 아나니아와 삽비라 부부가 오버랩 됩니다.
하지만 주님은 미워하는 자마다 살인하는 것이라 말씀(15) 하셨습니다.
과연 내가 그들을 정죄할 자격이 될까요?
그 불쌍한 젊은 부부가 죄값을 받고, 온전히 회복하여 진정한 하나님의 백성이 되기를 바랄 뿐입니다.
혹시 마음 속에 미워하는 사람이 있다면, 회개합시다.
그리고 오늘 하루 아무도 모르게 행함과 진실함으로 우리의 사랑을 실천합시다.
1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.
11 For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24 The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
There is a young couple. Both of their parents are famous local pastors. The woman's mother is a director at the church-run children's daycare. Both young couples graduated from a famous Christian university in Pohang, and the husband is an employee at CBS, a Christian TV station. The couple has a daughter of their own and recently adopted a second daughter, Jeong-in (8 months at the time), to be with their first child. The parents even appeared on a TV program by the Korea Educational Broadcasting System with both daughters to promote adoption.
However, what awful news do we hear? 8 months after being adopted, Jeong-in became a cold corpse. The cause of Jeong-in's death is due to a pancreatic cut and organ rupture. Jeong-in died of serious internal bleeding of her organs caused by external force. Her stomach was gradually rotting.
Besides that, there was no undamaged bone in the whole body. Some fractures were already in the process of healing, and others were new.
Doctors in the emergency room at the hospital where Jeong-in died and according to an autopsy by the National Forensic Service, both are convinced that there has been constant abuse and say that it is evidence of child abuse that is enough to appear in medical textbooks. Report also says that rupture of the pancreas or organs is only possible by brutal forces similar to a car accident.
The day before her death, Jeong-in, as captured on security camera at the daycare, could not eat anything and was only in the arms of the teacher. When the teacher could not hold her, she just sat alone blankly.
What hurts me so much is the fact that the baby could not even say anything that she was sick.
The name of the adoptive father of Jeong-in is An Seong-eun. The mother’s name is Jang Hayoung. Perhaps the surname “Seong” means ‘Spirit’ and “Eun” is ‘Grace’. “Ha” refers to ‘God’ and “Young” is ‘Glory’.
Both parents are pastors and wives of pastors, the Christian college, the Christian workplace, devout Christians, adoption, the grace of the Holy Spirit, the glory of God, and child abuse, murder...what a completely unmatched combination.
In the emergency waiting room, the adoptive parents were buying fish cakes from the internet shopping mall while their child was dying.
They would not have been a monster like this from the beginning...when did our Christianity start to create monsters like these?
God's Children Distinct From The World (verses 1-12)
John admires the grace of what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! (1).
We are bought by grace and by the blood when He died on the cross for all our sins.
But, of course, a world that does not know the grace of God cannot understand God's children.
Sometimes, the people of the world ask “what fun do you live with?” when they see Christians who are abstinent and moderate.
The reason why Christians live this distinct life is illustrated in verses 2-3. Loved ones want to imitate and resemble each other. Believers also have a holy desire to be like the Lord. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure (3).
But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin (5).
No one who lives in him keeps on sinning (6). There are many interpretations of this “not sinning”.
Calvin sees John as “proclaiming the principles of the believer's life, and interprets non-criminality as an ideal characteristic of the believer”. Luther said that Christians are both “simultaneously righteous and sinners”.
In sum, believers do commit sins, but they repent and turn around, and they are always cut to the heart even with small sins.
The life of these believers is contrasted with the world. Those who are born of God cannot sin or commit sin because the seed of God (Gospel, Holy Spirit, Jesus) is in them. This, too, does not say that no one is sinless.
Ultimately, through the great love He gave us in verse 1, we became children of God, so that we receive forgiveness of our sins, turn from our sins, and by grace we make a decision every day not to sin.
On the other hand, the one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning (8a). The reason the Son of God appeared was to take away our sins (5), and also to destroy the devil’s work (8b).
The children of God and the children of the devil are clearly revealed. “Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister” (10). They are like Cain (12).
Let Us Love with Action and Truth (verses 13-24)
Therefore, as Cain hated and killed Abel, it is not unusual for the world to hate the believers.
Everyone who hates is a murderer. Monsters are not created in one morning. Hatred builds up in the heart and eventually kills. The believers should practice self-control and love every day.
It appears Jeong-in's adoptive parents lived a life of faith that focused only on the outwardly appearances. They lived a life resembling faithfulness and had to look like Jesus, against their inner-self, thus they fooled themselves and others.
Our brotherly love should not be done solely with words and tongues. This is not a matter of revealing behavior. It is about heart. Although there was a specific act of adoption, it was actually just love with words and tongue without the truth.
The real focus is the act of looking and acting only on God, whether others know it or not.
It is an act in which the heart and action coincide. Because God does not just see our actions, but we know that God is greater than our hearts, and He knows everything (20).
The reason to love this way is so obvious. Because Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters (16).
Therefore, we must take care of our brothers in need through what we possess (wealth, health, power, etc.) (17).
If we do what is pleasing to God and keep the commandments, we can have confidence before God (21), and receive from him anything we ask (22a).
What is His commandment?
To believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us (23). This is the only way we remain in the Lord and the Lord remains in us.
Why did Seong-eun An and Hayoung Jang act in contrast to the holy names?
They knew that they should not just love only with words and tongues, so they went on to take action. But why did they...
Works must accompany truth. Deeds lacking truth are, after all, pretense and hypocrisy, and consequently have worse consequences than words and tongues alone.
Ananias and Sapphira appearing in Acts Chapter 5 overlaps with this.
However, the Lord said that everyone who hates is a murderer (15).
Am I really worthy of condemning them?
I just hope that the poor young couple will be paid for their sins, fully recover, and become the true people of God.
If there is someone in your heart that you currently hate, let us repent.
And today, let us practice our love with actions and in truth without anyone knowing.
