제가 개인적으로 좋아하는 배우 덴젤 워싱턴Denzel Washington이 주연한 영화 일라이The Book of Eli(2010) 는 주인공 일라이가 전쟁으로 폐허가 되어 물과 식량, 그리고 책(문명)이 귀하게 된 무법천지 세상에서 우연히 성경을 발견하고는 인류의 귀한 문명을 복원하는 공동체가 모여 사는 서쪽으로 성경을 운반해야 한다는 사명을 느끼고, 운반한다는 내용의 영화입니다. 영화 중에 일라이는 이런 대사를 합니다.
몇 년씩 책을 가지고 다니며 매일 읽었는데도 정작 거기서 배운 대로 사는 건 소홀히 했어
… 자기 자신보다는 남을 위해 사는 것
영화 일라이는 제목부터 시작해서 노골적(?)인 기독교 색채를 보여줍니다. Eli 는 나의 하나님 이라는 의미이고, 선지자 엘리야의 이름과 같습니다. 물론 종교 영화는 아닙니다. 하지만 구석구석 숨겨진 메시지를 찾는 재미가 있는 영화였던 것으로 기억합니다. 점점 황폐해져 가는 세상 가운데에서 다음 세대에게 전해줘야 할 것이 무엇인지를 생각하게 하는 영화였습니다.
그런데 신기하게도 장르는 액션입니다. 폭력 장면을 싫어하시는 분은 추천하지 않습니다.
하나님의 날을 사모하라 (10-13절)
베드로 사도는 다시 한 번 주의 날(10)에 대해서 권면합니다. 주의 날은 구약 성경에서 여호와의 날(욜 1:15)로 자주 묘사되었고, 구약 성경의 핵심 주제 가운데 하나입니다. 본문에서는 하나님의 날(12)로 표현 하기도 했습니다. 그러니까 주의 날, 여호와의 날, 하나님의 날은 모두 같은 의미의 말로 이 세상 종말의 날이요, 하나님이 심판하시는 날이고, 주 예수의 재림의 날입니다.
베드로 사도는 주의 날의 특징에 대해 말합니다.
첫째로 돌연성입니다.갑작스럽게 예측할 수 없게 들이 닥친다는 것입니다. 그러나 사도 바울은 형제들아 너희는 어둠에 있지 아니하매 그 날이 도둑 같이 너희에게 임하지 못하리니(살전 5:4) 라고 말합니다.
거룩한 주의 자녀들에게는 감추어진 것이 아닙니다. 갑작스럽지만, 어느 정도 예측할 수 있습니다.
둘째로 필연성입니다.종말과 주의 재림, 그리고 심판은 거짓 교사들의 주장과는 달리 반드시 임합니다.
셋째로 종말성입니다. 주의 날에는 반드시 심판이 있습니다. 무서운 불의 심판입니다. 모든 것이 끝나는 것입니다. 그래서 베드로 사도는 질문합니다. 너희가 어떤 사람이 되어야 마땅하냐?(11b)
세상의 끝에 이토록 무서운 심판이 있을 것인데, 과연 우리가 어떻게 살아야 하느냔 것입니다.
베드로 사도는 스스로 답을 합니다. 거룩한 행실과 경건함으로 하나님의 날이 임하기를 바라보고 간절히 사모하라(11b-12a), 마라나타Maranatha (주께서 임하시느니라 또는 우리 주여 오소서), 주님 오심을 간절히 바라면서, 동시에 이 땅에서의 삶을 거룩과 경건함으로 살라는 명령입니다.
왜, 그래야 합니까? 그날에 모든 피조 세계가 불의 심판(12b)을 받지만, 성도는 주님의 약속대로 의가 있는 곳인 신천지, 곧 새 하늘과 새 땅을 얻게 될 것이기 때문(13)입니다.
은혜와 지식에 자라 가라 (14-18절)
그러므로 새 하늘과 새 땅을 바라보는 성도들은 주 앞에서 점도 없고 흠도 없이 평강 가운데서 나타나기를 힘써야 합니다. 거짓 교사들은 교회 공동체의 점과 흠(2:13)이었지만, 성도들은 그렇지 않습니다. 신랑 되신 예수를 맞이하는 거룩하고 순결한 신부가 되어야 합니다.
이것은 일차적으로 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 죄 씻음 받아 거룩한 자가 된 것을 의미하고,
나아가 그 거룩한 신분에 어울리는 거룩하고 순결한 삶을 살아야 함을 의미하는 것입니다.
주님이 오래 참고 더디 오심으로 우리가 구원을 얻을 수 있었던 것임을 잊어서는 안됩니다.
이러한 성경적인 종말론은 베드로 사도만 주장하는 것이 아닙니다.
사랑하는 형제 사도 바울의 주장(15b-16a)이기도 합니다.
베드로 사도의 이러한 발언은 바울서신의 정경성을 인정하는 근거가 됩니다.
어떤 사람들은 베드로와 바울의 관계가 좋지 않은 라이벌 관계라고 의심하지만, 본문을 보니 결코 그렇기 않음을 알 수 있습니다. 바울 역시 베드로가 아들처럼 여겼던 마가를 인정하고 데려와 달라고 디모데 (딤후 4:11)에게 부탁하기도 했습니다.
그 중에 알기 어려운 것이 더러 있으니 무식한 자들과 굳세지 못한 자들이 다른 성경과 같이 그것도 억지로 풀다가 스스로 멸망에 이르느니라(16b) 거짓 교사들이 은혜를 강조한 사도 바울의 복음을 곡해하여 율법폐기 또는 도덕폐기를 주장하며 쾌락과 음란함을 일삼았던 것을 의미합니다.
그래서 베드로나 주의 형제 야고보는 행위와 삶에 대해서 강조를 했던 것입니다.
마지막으로 베드로 사도는 결론적인 권면을 합니다.
먼저는 소극적인 권면(17)입니다. 무법한 자들, 곧 거짓 교사들의 미혹에 넘어가 믿음에서 떨어질 것을 조심하라는 충고입니다. 사탄은 우는 사자처럼, 때로는 여우처럼 성도를 유혹합니다.
믿음 위에 굳건하게 서서 미혹되지 않도록 주의하라는 명령입니다.
마지막으로 적극적인 권면(18)입니다. 예수 그리스도의 은혜와 그를 아는 지식에서 자라라는 명령입니다.
영적인 성장을 위해서는 주의 은혜는 필수입니다. 은혜 없이는 아무것도 안 됩니다. 또한 은혜를 입었다면 이제는 주 예수를 더욱 알도록 힘을 써야 합니다. 이것은 성도의 의지와 노력입니다.
하나님의 구원의 은혜가 임한 후에는 우리 역시 노력해야 합니다. 그 때 더욱 은혜가 주어지는 것입니다.
청소년 시절에 홀트아동복지회를 방문한 적이 있습니다. 참으로 안타까운 형제자매들을 보았습니다.
머리만 기형적으로 커서 평생을 누워서 생활하는 형제였습니다.
다른 형제는 몸이 더 이상 자라지 않는 질병에 걸려서 평생을 유아와 같은 모습으로 살아야 했습니다.
사람이건 동물이건 어릴 때는 너무 귀여워서 더 이상 자라지 않았으면 하는 마음이 들지만, 만일 그대로 성장이 멈춘다면 그것은 부모에게 엄청난 고민일 수 밖에 없을 것입니다. 결코 행복한 일이 아닙니다.
영적으로도 마찬가지입니다. 일년이 지나고, 이년이 지나고 수 십 년이 지나도 신앙의 성장이 없이 그저 제자리 걸음이라면, 또는 비정상적으로 머리만 커진다면 그것만큼 하나님 아버지 마음을 아프게 하는 일은 없을 것입니다.
주님 오심을 사모합시다. 그리고 세상 유혹과 죄악은 삼가고, 오직 주의 은혜를 얻는 것과 주 예수를 아는 지식에서 쑥쑥 자라 납시다. 그리하여 흠도 점도 없이 다시 오시는 신랑 되신 예수를 맞이하는 거룩한 신부 되기를 바랍니다. 마라나타! 주 예수여 속히 오시옵소서!
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.
11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
17 Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.
The Book of Eli (2010), starring my personal favorite actor, Denzel Washington, is a story revolving around Eli, a nomad in a post-apocalyptic world, a place where water and food, and books (civilization) became valuable. He was told by a voice to deliver his copy of a mysterious book (Bible) to a safe location on the West Coast where the community of mankind gathers to restore the precious civilization. The history of the post-war world is explained along the way, as is the importance of Eli's mission.
During the movie, Eli makes this line:
I was carrying and reading it everyday, got so caught up in protecting it, I forgot to live by what I'd learnt from it...
“To do more for others than you do for yourself”
The movie Eli starts with the title and blatantly(?) shows the Christian themes. The name Eli means My God and is the same as the prophet Elijah's name. But this is not a religious movie. However, I remember that it was an interesting movie to find hidden messages in every corner. It was a movie that made me think about what needs to be passed on to the next generation in a world that is getting worse. Surprisingly, the genre is action hence not recommended for those who hate violence.
Look Forward to the Day of God (verses 10-13)
The Apostle Peter once again exhorts the Lord's Day (10). The Lord's Day was often described in the Old Testament as the day of Jehovah (Joel 1:15), and is one of the key themes of the Old Testament. In today’s scriptures, it is also expressed as the day of God (12). Therefore, the day of the Lord, the day of Jehovah, and the day of God all have the same meaning as the day of the end times, the day of God's judgment, and the day of the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus.
The apostle Peter speaks of the distinction of the day of the Lord.
First is sudden. It will come suddenly and unpredictably. But the apostle Paul says, But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief (1 Thess 5:4). It is not hidden from the children of the Holy Lord. It will be sudden, but somewhat predictable.
Second is necessity. The apocalypse, the Lord's Second Coming, and judgment will surely come, contrary to the claims of false teachers.
Third is the end-time. There will be a judgment on the day of the Lord. It is a terrifying judgment of fire. Everything will end. So the Apostle Peter asks a question. What kind of people ought you to be? (11a). There will be such a terrifying judgment at the end of the world, and so how must we live?
The apostle Peter answers himself. You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming (11b-12a).
Maranatha (the Lord is coming or come, our Lord), is a command to live life on earth in holiness and reverence while earnestly wishing for the coming of the Lord.
Why, should we? This is because that day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat (12). But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells (13).
Grow in the Grace and Knowledge (verses 14-18)
Therefore, the Christians who look forward to the new heaven and the new earth must make every effort to be found spotless or blameless, and in peace before the Lord.
False teachers were blots and blemishes of the church community (2:13), but the believers are not. We must become a holy and pure bride who welcomes Jesus the bridegroom.
This primarily means being washed away from sins and made holy through Jesus Christ, and furthermore, it means that we must live a holy and pure life appropriate to that holy status.
We must not forget that the Lord's long-patience and delayed coming have saved us.
This biblical eschatology is not just claimed by the apostle Peter.
It was also asserted by the apostle Paul, our dear brother (15b-16a).
The apostle Peter's remarks are the basis for acknowledging the canonicality of Paul's epistle.
Some people believer that Peter's relationship with Paul was a bad rival, but the scripture shows that it is by no means so. Paul also asked Timothy to acknowledge Mark, whom Peter considered as a son, and bring him back (2 Timothy 4:11).
His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction (16b) means that false teachers perverted the Gospel of the apostle Paul who emphasized Grace. They insisted on the abolition of the law or morality, and engaged in pleasure and lewdness.
That is why Peter and James, the Lord's brother, emphasized behavior (act) and life.
Finally, the apostle Peter gives concluding counsel.
First is the passive commend (17). It is an advice to be on guard that the lawless ones, namely false teachers, fall into the delusion and fall from their faith. Satan tempts the believers like a roaring lion and sometimes like a little fox.
It is a command to stand firm on the faith and be careful not to be deceived.
Lastly, it is an active commend (18). It is a command to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
The grace of the Lord is essential for spiritual growth. Nothing can be done without grace. Also, if you have been favored (received grace), you must now make every effort to know the Lord Jesus more. This is the will and effort of the believers.
After God's saving grace comes upon us, we must also make efforts. So that more grace is given to us.
During my youth, I visited Holt Children's Services. I saw many pitiful brothers and sisters there. One brother had a deformed head and lived a lifetime lying down. The other brother had Hypothyroidism, a disorder that stops the bone growth, so he had to live his life like an infant.
Whether human or animal, they are so cute when young and we do not want them to grow up so fast. But if growth stops, it will be a tremendous concern for parents. It is never a happy moment.
The same goes with the spiritual stage. After a year, two years, and decades, nothing will hurt Heavenly Father's heart as much if it is just a step in place without growth in faith, or if just our head grows abnormally.
Let us look forward to the Lord's coming. And let us refrain from the temptations and iniquity of this world, but grow up in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus and gain the grace of the Lord.
I sincerely hope that we will be a holy (spotless and blameless) bride who welcomes Jesus, who is our bridegroom who will come again. Maranatha! Lord Jesus, come quickly!
