1 사랑하는 자들아 내가 이제 이 둘째 편지를 너희에게 쓰노니 이 두 편지로 너희의 진실한 마음을 일깨워 생각나게 하여 2 곧 거룩한 선지자들이 예언한 말씀과 주 되신 구주께서 너희의 사도들로 말미암아 명하신 것을 기억하게 하려 하노라
3 먼저 이것을 알지니 말세에 조롱하는 자들이 와서 자기의 정욕을 따라 행하며 조롱하여 4 이르되 주께서 강림하신다는 약속이 어디 있느냐 조상들이 잔 후로부터 만물이 처음 창조될 때와 같이 그냥 있다 하니 5 이는 하늘이 옛적부터 있는 것과 땅이 물에서 나와 물로 성립된 것도 하나님의 말씀으로 된 것을 그들이 일부러 잊으려 함이로다 6 이로 말미암아 그 때에 세상은 물이 넘침으로 멸망하였으되 7 이제 하늘과 땅은 그 동일한 말씀으로 불사르기 위하여 보호하신 바 되어 경건하지 아니한 사람들의 심판과 멸망의 날까지 보존하여 두신 것이니라
8 사랑하는 자들아 주께는 하루가 천 년 같고 천 년이 하루 같다는 이 한 가지를 잊지 말라 9 주의 약속은 어떤 이들이 더디다고 생각하는 것 같이 더딘 것이 아니라 오직 주께서는 너희를 대하여 오래 참으사 아무도 멸망하지 아니하고 다 회개하기에 이르기를 원하시느니라
몇 년 전에 눈에 띄는 기사를 접한 적이 있습니다. 그것은 로마 카톨릭 교황청 대변인이 공식적으로 예수 그리스도의 재림(파루시아)은 없을 것이다 라는 기자회견을 했다는 기사였습니다. 대변인인 조르지오 살바도르 추기경Cardinal Giorgio Salvadore은 예수의 재림은 없을 것이며, 당시 예수가 포도주를 마시고 취중에 실언을 했다 라고 인터넷 언론사인WWN Waterford Whispers News과 인터뷰를 했다는 것입니다.
당시에 이러한 기사는 SNS를 통해서 급속도로 번져 나갔고, 보수주의 기독교 단체는 거 보라는 식으로 카톨릭을 마구 비난했습니다. 저도 만일 기사가 사실이라면 참으로 위험하다 생각했습니다.
하지만 중요한 것은 만일 사실이라면 아니겠습니까?
사실 여부를 떠나서 무조건 거짓 기사에 현혹되어 비난의 대열에 동참하는 것은, 나중에 스스로를 심한 자괴감에 빠지게 합니다. 반드시 사실 확인이 먼저입니다.
WWN 이라는 유사 인터넷 언론사는 사실 여부와 상관없이 풍자와 패러디를 전문으로 기사를 작성하는 언론매체입니다. 카톨릭 역시 예수님의 재림을 믿을뿐더러, 조르지오 살바도르라는 대변인은 물론, 그런 이름을 가진 추기경도 없다고 합니다. WWN은 북한이 최초로 4시간 만에 사람을 태양으로 보냈다는 기사를 아무렇지도 않게 홈페이지에 올려놓는 그런 매체입니다. 거짓매체, 거짓뉴스를 조심해야 합니다.
확실한 약속 파루시아 (1-7절)
베드로후서는 법정적 수사학Forensic Rhetoric을 사용합니다. 이는 마치 법정에서 증언하듯, 사도가 보고 경험한 것을 전하고, 대적자들에 대해서는 고소하고, 최후에 임할 예수의 재림과 심판이라는 법정적 성격의 사건을 전하기 때문입니다.
베드로 사도는 전서에 이어 보내는 두 번째 편지의 목적을 상기 시킵니다. 그것은 예수님의 재림에 대해서 확실하게 기억하게 하기 위함입니다. 예수님의 재림에 대한 확실성을 강조하기 위하여 베드로는 선지자, 사도, 그리고 예수님의 말씀이라는 세가지 권위를 근거로 듭니다. 한마디로 표현하자면 예수님의 재림, 곧 파루시아 Parousia는 신구약 성경에 약속된 확실하게 이루어질 사건이라는 것입니다.
예수의 재림과 심판이 있기 전에 반드시 말세에 조롱하는 자들(3a)이 등장할 것입니다. 그들은 자신의 정욕대로, 곧 자신의 욕망에 생각대로 정통 교리를 부정하고 하나님을 조롱할 것(3b)입니다.
주께서 강림하신다는 약속이 어디 있느냐(4a) 이것은 늦어지는 주님의 재림을 조롱하는 표현입니다.
마치 장기를 두다가 어려운 수에 걸려 시간을 지체하는 사람에게 장기 두는 사람 어디 갔나? 라고 놀리는 것과 같습니다.
그들은 심판도 멸망도 없을 것이고, 세상은 창조될 때처럼 그냥 쭉~ 간다라고 주장합니다. 이러한 사상은 당시 유행하던 에피쿠로스Epicurus 철학과 연관이 있습니다. 에피쿠로스는 역설을 통해서 신과 악에 대해서 설명하는데, 그 유명한 삼도논법Trilemma이라는 방법입니다.
신은 악을 없애려 하지만 그럴 수 없는 것인가? 그렇다면 신은 전능한 것이 아니다.
그렇다면 그는 할 수 있지만 하지 않고 있는 것인가? 그렇다면 그는 악의를 갖고 있는 것이다.
그렇다면 그는 능력도 있고 없애려 하기도 하는가? 그렇다면 악이 어떻게 있을 수 있는가?
그렇다면 그는 능력도 없고 없애려 하지도 않는가? 그렇다면 우리는 왜 그를 신이라 부르나?
이러한 회의적인 사상이 교회까지도 침투하여 들었습니다. 늦어지는 주님의 재림은 없을 것이고, 이 세상은 그대로 유지될 것이며, 그 가운데 가장 선한 것은 쾌락을 추구하는 것이라는 사상입니다.
베드로 사도는 먼저 거짓 교사들도 인정하는 창조(5)로 시작하여, 말씀으로 하늘과 땅과 물을 창조하신 하나님은 당연히 세상을 심판하실 권세와 능력과 주권이 있는 분이시며(6), 마지막 때에는 노아의 때처럼 물이 아닌 불로서 심판하실 것이며, 그때까지 세상을 보존(7)하고 계시다고 설명합니다.
창조-심판-보존 의 모든 주권과 권세를 가지신 분이 하나님이라는 것입니다. 그러므로 창조를 하신 분이 당연히 심판도 하실 수 있고, 마지막 심판 때까지 창조하신 세상을 보존하고 계시다는 겁니다.
무신론자들은 세상이 우연히 생겨났다고 주장하지만, 우리는 그 우연을 바로 하나님의 의지로 봅니다.
무신론자들은 신의 존재를 인정할 수 없기에, 우연이라는 신(?)을 만들어 낸 것입니다. 하지만 우리는 성경을 기준으로 무신론자들이 말하는 그 우연이라는 원인이 바로 하나님임을 확신하고 믿는 것입니다.
파루시아가 더딘 이유 (8-9절)
초대 교회 성도들은 예수님이 속히 다시 오실 것이라고 생각하고 기대했습니다. 하지만 2000년이 지난 지금도 아직 주님은 오시지 않았습니다. 그러니 사람들은 아! 주님의 재림은 물 건너갔구나 생각합니다.
베드로 사도는 재림이 더딜 것을 이미 알았던 것일까요? 성령의 감동하심을 받은 것이 분명합니다.
주님의 재림이 더딘 이유를 하나님의 성품과 관련하여 2가지로 설명합니다.
먼저는 하나님의 비공유적 속성인 영원성입니다. 비공유적 속성이란 하나님과 인간이 함께 공유하지 않는 하나님만 가지고 있는 전지성, 전능성과 같은 속성을 의미합니다. 베드로 사도는 여기서 하나님의 영원성이라는 속성을 주의 목전에는 천 년이 지나간 어제 같으며 밤의 한 순간 같을 뿐임이니이다(시 90:4)을 인용하여 설명합니다. 영원이라는 하나님의 시간에 비하면 천년, 이천년은 한 순간과 같습니다.
둘째로 하나님의 공유적 속성인 오래 참음입니다. 오래 참음, 인내는 우리 인간에게도 있는 성품입니다.
주님이 속히 재림하지 않는 이유는 가능하면 모든 인간이 회개하고 구원 받기를 원하시기 때문입니다.
니느웨의 멸망을 원했던 요나 선지자에게 내비치신 내가 어찌 아끼지 아니하겠느냐(욘 4:11b) 하신 아버지의 마음입니다.
제 부모님도 그랬고, 저도 그렇지만 자녀가 잘못된 행동을 반복하면, 그러다 혼난다 라고 경고합니다. 바로 체벌하지 않습니다. 왜냐하면 자녀가 혼나지 않고 행동을 수정하기를 원하는 마음 때문입니다. 하지만 행동이 교정되지 않고, 계속 악한 행동이 반복되면 결국에는 자녀를 체벌할 수 밖에 없습니다. 반드시 체벌합니다. 그것이 사랑이기 때문입니다.
주님의 재림이 늦어지는 것 역시 마찬가지입니다. 한 명이라도 더 구원받기를 원하는 사랑의 마음입니다.
그러므로 이미 구원을 얻은 주의 거룩한 자녀들은 아버지의 마음을 헤아려 아직 예수를 모르는 자들에게 전도해야 하는 것입니다.
아버지 당신의 마음이 있는 곳에 나의 마음도 있기를 원합니다!
그러나 방심해서는 안 됩니다. 어느 날 반드시 파루시아가 있을 것입니다!
그 날까지 믿음을 간직하고, 전하는 우리가 됩시다!
1 Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2 I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.
3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
A few years ago, I came across an article that stood out. It was an article that a spokesman for the Roman Catholic Church officially gave a press conference that there will be no Second Coming of Jesus Christ (Parousia). Cardinal Giorgio Salvadore, spokesman, told Internet press WWN (Waterford Whispers News) that the second coming of Jesus may not happen, after all, and that Jesus at that time drank wine and was drunk.
Apparently these articles spread rapidly through social media, and conservative Christian groups criticized Catholics as if “it serves you right”. I also thought it was very dangerous if the article was true.
But what's important is if it were true, wouldn't it?
Joining the ranks of accusations by being deceived by fake articles, whether true or not, leads to deep self-destruction later on. We need to make sure to check the facts first.
An Internet media company called WWN is known for specializing in sarcasm and parody regardless of the facts. Not only do Catholics believe in the Second Coming of Jesus, there is no spokesman, Giorgio Salvador, nor a cardinal with such a name. WWN is a medium that casually posts an article like “North Korea first sent off a person to the sun in four hours”. Let’s beware of false media and fake news.
The Definite Promise (parousia) (verses 1-7)
2 Peter uses Forensic Rhetoric. This is because it conveys what the apostles have seen and experienced, as if witnessing in a court of law, accuses the adversaries, and conveys the events of the court nature of the final coming of Jesus and judgment.
The apostle Peter reminds us of the purpose of the second letter following the first book. It is to make sure we remember the Second Coming of Jesus. To emphasize the certainty of Jesus' Second Coming, Peter draws on three authorities: the prophet, the apostle, and the words of Jesus. In short, the Second Coming of Jesus, Parousia, is a surely fulfilled event promised in the Old and New Testaments.
Before the Second Coming and judgment of Jesus, there will be scoffers will come in the last days (3a). They will deny traditional doctrine and mock God according to their own passions, scoffing and following their own evil desires (3b).
They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? (4a) this is a mocking expression for the delayed Second Coming of the Lord. It is the same mocking as if a chess player is delaying his time, and the opponent is asking, “where did my opponent go?”.
They claim that there will be no judgment or destruction, and that the world just keeps going, just like when it was created. These ideas are related to the Epicurus philosophy of that time. Epicurus describes God and evil through a paradox, which is the famous method called Trilemma.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”
These skeptical thoughts even penetrated into the church. There will be no delayed Second Coming of the Lord, and the world will remain the same, and the best of them is the idea of pursuing pleasure.
The apostle Peter begins with creation (5), which even false teachers admit, and God, who created the heavens, the earth, and the water with the Word, is naturally the One who has the authority, power, and sovereignty to judge the world (6), and that he will judge by fire, not water as in Noah's day, and that he preserves the world until that day (7).
God alone is the One who has all the sovereignty and authority of creation-judgment-preservation. Therefore, the Creator can, of course, judge and preserve the world that He created until the last judgment.
Atheists claim that the world came about by chance, but we see it as God's will.
Since atheists cannot acknowledge the existence of a god, they have created a god(?) called coincidence. However, based on the Bible, we are convinced and believe that God is the cause of the coincidence that atheists claim.
The Reason Parousia is Slow (verses 8-9)
The members of the early church thought and expected Jesus would come again soon. But even after 2000 years, the Lord has not yet come. So people say “ah! there goes the Second Coming of the Lord, it is off the table”.
Did the Apostle Peter already know that the Second Coming would be slow? He must have been touched by the Holy Spirit. Two reasons for the slow coming of the Lord are explained in relation to God's character.
First is Eternity, which is the non-shared attribute of God. The non-shared attribute refers to God’s characteristics such as omniscience and omnipotence that God does not share with humans. The apostle Peter explains here by quoting the attribute of God's eternity, “a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night” (Psalm 90:4). Compared to God's time of eternity, a thousand and two thousand years are just like a moment.
Second is long-patience, a common attribute of God. Long-waiting and patience are characteristics that we humans also have. The reason the Lord is not coming soon is because He wants all humans to repent and be saved, if at all possible.
This is the heart of the Father when the prophet Jonah wanted Nineveh’s destruction, “And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh?” (Jonah 4:11b).
Just like my parents did, I warn my kids that if they repeat wrongdoings, they will get scolded. I do not punish them in the first place. This is because I have the heart for my child to correct his behavior without being scolded.
However, if the behavior is not corrected and the wrongdoing continues to repeat, the child will eventually be punished. Punishment is a must. Because that is love.
The same goes for the delay of the Lord's Second Coming. It is a heart of love that He wants even more people to be saved.
Therefore, the holy children of the Lord who have already been saved must understand the heart of the Father and preach to those who do not yet know Jesus.
Father, where Your heart is, may my heart be there with Yours!
Let us not be vigilant though. One day there will surely be Parousia!
Until that day, let us keep the faith and continue to spread the good news!
