1907년 영어권 작가로는 처음으로 노벨문학상을 수상한 조지프 러디어드 키플링Joseph Rudyard Kipling은 영국의 소설가이자 시인입니다. 그의 대표적인 작품은 정글북The Jungle Book(1894)입니다.
정글북의 줄거리는 다 아시는 바와 같이 인간 아이 모글리가 정글의 늑대 부부에 의해 키워지며 모든 역경을 이긴 후 다시 인간 마을로 돌아온다는 내용입니다. 100년도 더 지난 소설임에도 지금도 서점에서 매년 비슷한 판매고를 기록할 정도로 많은 사람들에게 사랑 받는 소설이라고 합니다.
월트 디즈니Walt Disney 사에서는 애니메이션과 영화로 제작하여 많은 어린이들에게 즐거움을 주었습니다.
그러나 소설과는 달리 실제로 야생에서 늑대나 동물에 의해 키워진 아이들은 결코 다시 인간의 세계로 돌아올 수 없음이 몇몇 사건을 통해 증명되었습니다.
야생에서 동물들에 의해 키워진 인간 중 가장 유명한 사례는 1920년 정글북 소설의 배경인 인도의 정글에서 3살, 8살의 소녀가 늑대들의 무리에서 발견된 사례입니다. 사람들은 소녀들을 구조하여 인간 사회에 적응을 시키려 했지만, 한 명은 1년 만에 사망하였고, 다른 한 명 역시 9년 밖에 살지 못하고 사망했습니다. 9년의 시간 동안 그 소녀가 배운 것은 몇 개의 단어와 포크 잡는 것이 전부였다고 합니다.
학자들에 의하면 언어를 배워야 하는 유아기에 언어나 생활 습관을 배우지 않으면, 나중에 언어를 배우거나 생활 습관을 바꾸는 것은 거의 불가능하다는 연구 결과가 나왔습니다.
그러고 보면 무엇이든 때가 있습니다. 그 때를 놓치지 않도록 노력해야겠습니다.
발람의 길을 따르는 자들 (12-18절)
베드로 사도는 거짓 교사들에 대해서 강도 높게 비난합니다.
그들은 마치 잡혀 죽기 위하여 태어난 이성 없는 짐승과 같습니다. 그들은 무지함으로 인하여 용감하게 알지 못하는 것을 비방합니다. 사람이 무식하면 용감하다는 말이 맞습니다. 그들은 멸망 가운데서 멸망을 당하며, 불의의 값으로 불의를 당할 것(12b-13a)입니다. 메시지 성경은 다음과 같이 번역합니다.
바로 그 행위로 자신들도 파멸 당하고 결국에는 패배자가 되고 말 것입니다.
그들의 악행이 부메랑이 되어 그들에게 돌아갈 것입니다.
그들은 자신이 행하는 행위대로 멸망 당할 것입니다. 그들은 낮에 즐기고 노는 것을 기쁘게 여기는 자들입니다. 교회의 구성원으로서 이러한 행위는 세상 사람들에게 교회의 점과 흠이 될 뿐(13)입니다.
현대에도 교회를 다니지만 오히려 세상 사람보다도 삶이 아름답지 못한 자들이 있습니다.
그들은 오히려 하나님의 이름을 욕 먹일 뿐입니다.
거짓 교사들은 성도들과 함께 성찬과 애찬에 참여(13b)하지만, 즉 함께 신앙생활을 하지만 목적은 전혀 다른 것입니다. 자신들의 더러운 욕구를 채우고자 하는 음란한 마음으로 성도들을 대하면서, 기회만 있으면 믿음이 연약한 자들을 유혹하여 자신들의 욕망을 채우는 악하고 음란한 자들(14)입니다.
현대에도 목회자라는 이름을 이용하여 성도들을 수년간 성적으로 괴롭히는 거짓 교사들에 관한 뉴스를 종종 접할 수 있습니다. 사탄은 예나 지금이나 동일한 수법으로 교회를 공격합니다.
베드로 사도는 이러한 자들은 탐욕에 연단된 마음(14b), 곧 양심에 화인 맞은 자들(딤전 4:2)이며,
저주의 자식(14b)이라고 선포합니다.
베드로 사도는 이러한 거짓 교사를 바른 길을 떠나 미혹된 브올의 아들 발람에 빗대어 설명(15)합니다.
그는 불의 삯을 사랑하다가 자신의 불법으로 말미암아 말하지 못하는 나귀가 사람의 소리로 말하여 미친 행동을 저지당한 선지자(민 22:28)입니다. 거짓 선지자, 거짓 교사는 이처럼 짐승보다도 못한 자입니다.
베드로 사도는 은유적인 표현으로 그들에 대해 설명합니다.
그들은 물 없는 샘이요 광풍에 밀려가는 안개(17a) 입니다. 그들은 인생의 행복과 만족에 대해 가르치지만 그것은 마치 물 없는 샘처럼 공허한 거짓일 뿐이며, 잠깐 있다가 사라져 버리는 허무한 안개와 같을 뿐입니다. 그들은 허탄한 자랑의 말을 하며 그릇되게 살던 이방인의 신앙에서 벗어나 겨우 예수 그리스도를 믿는 신앙에 들어온 초신자들을 음란으로써 육체의 정욕 중에서 유혹(18)하는 아주 악한 자들입니다. 영지주의자들의 영과 육에 대한 이원론적인 궤변은 쉽게 육체적으로 음란한 행위를 하도록 잘못된 자유를 주는 가르침이었습니다. 그러한 자들의 결국은 캄캄한 어둠뿐(17b)입니다.
다시 멸망의 자리로 (19-22절)
거짓 교사들은 분명히 이방 신앙에서 벗어나 예수 그리스도의 은혜를 입었던 자들입니다. 그러나 그들은 자신들에게 주어진 그 귀한 자유를 다시 죄의 종 노릇 하는데 사용한 것입니다. 멸망의 종들(19b)입니다.
베드로 사도는 이를 설명합니다. 예수 그리스도를 앎으로 세상의 더러움을 피했다가 다시 그 중에 얽매이면 나중 형편이 처음보다 더 심할 것이며, 차라리 예수를 알지 못했던 것이 더 나았을 것입니다.
이는 예수님 말씀하신 일곱 귀신 비유와 동일한 교훈입니다.
이에 가서 저보다 더 악한 귀신 일곱을 데리고 들어가서 거하니 그 사람의 나중 형편이
전보다 더욱 심하게 되느니라 이 악한 세대가 또한 이렇게 되리라 (마 12:45)
예수님을 믿다가 변절하여 다시 죄의 종이 되어 세상을 탐닉하는 것은 개가 그 토한 것을 다시 먹는 것(잠 26:11)과 같은 역겨움이며, 돼지가 씻은 후 다시 더러운 구덩이에 눕는 것(헬라 유대인의 속담집 아히칼 인용)과 같은 안타까움입니다.
예수님은 십자가의 은혜로 우리를 죄에서 자유하게 하셨습니다. 주님은 진리를 알지니 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 하리라(요 8:32)고 우리에게 자유를 선포하셨는데, 우리는 그 자유를 다시 죄를 탐닉하는 방종에 사용해서는 안 됩니다!
우리 안에 남아 있는 죄성은 끊임없이 우리를 죄 가운데로 유혹합니다. 하지만 우리는 맞서 싸워야 합니다. 때로는 피해야 합니다. 우리는 다시 죄의 종으로, 짐승의 삶으로 돌아갈 수 없습니다!
육체의 정욕을 이길 수 있는 힘은 오직 주의 보혈의 능력 밖에는 없습니다!
날마다 예수님을 찾고, 보혈의 능력을 구합시다. 그럴 때 과거와 영원히 결별할 수 있습니다.
이미 우리는 과거의 죄악된 삶과 결별한 자들입니다. 그쪽은 쳐다보지도 맙시다!
12 But these people blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like unreasoning animals, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like animals they too will perish.
13 They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you. 14 With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed—an accursed brood! 15 They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer, who loved the wages of wickedness. 16 But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey—an animal without speech—who spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.
17 These people are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. 18 For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.” 20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. 21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22 Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”
Joseph Rudyard Kipling is an English journalist, novelist and poet. He was the first English-speaking author to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907, and his representative poem is The Jungle Book (1894).
As you all know, the story of the Jungle Book is that the human child, Mowgli, is raised by a couple of wolves in the jungle and returns to the human village after overcoming all hardships. Although it is a novel that is more than 100 years old, it is still loved by so many people that it records similar sales every year in bookstores.
The Walt Disney company made it into animations and movies that were entertaining for many children.
However, unlike novels, several incidents have proven that children raised in the wild by wolves or animals will never ever return to the human world.
The most famous example of humans raised by animals in the wild is the case of a 3-year-old and 8-year-old girls found in a group of wolves in the jungles of India, the setting of the 1920 Jungle Book novel. People tried to rescue the girls and adapt them to human society, but one died after a year, and the other died after living only 9 years. Apparently all the girl learned over the course of nine years was catching a few words and usage of a fork.
Studies have shown that it is almost impossible to learn a language or change lifestyles later if one does not learn a language or lifestyle in infancy, according to scholars.
There is always the right timing for anything. We must try not to miss that time.
Those who follow the way of Balaam (verses 12-18)
The apostle Peter criticizes false teachers strongly.
They are like the unreasoning beasts born to be killed. Because of ignorance, they bravely slander in matters they do not understand. The proverb is right saying that when a person is ignorant, he/she is brave”. They will perish in the midst of destruction, and they will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done (12b-13a).
The Message Bible translates as follows:
In the very act of bringing down others with their ignorant blasphemies, they themselves will be brought down, losers in the end.
Their evil will boomerang on them.
They will be destroyed according to their act. They are those who enjoy and carouse in broad daylight. As a member of the church, these actions are only blots and blemishes (13) of the church to the people of the world.
Even in modern times, there are those who attend church, but their lives are less beautiful than those of the world. Their lives only curse God's name.
False teachers participate in sacrament and feast with the saints (13b), that is, they live a life of faith together, but their purpose is completely different. They are wicked and lewd people who treat the saints with eyes full of adultery to satisfy their filthy desires, they seduce those who are weak in faith; they are experts in greed (14).
Even today, we hear news about false teachers claiming to be “pastors” who have sexually harassed the saints for years. Satan attacks the church in the same way as it used to have done in the past.
The apostle Peter proclaims that they are experts in greed (14b), whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron (1 Timothy 4:2), and they are children of curse (14b).
The apostle Peter explains that they have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer (15). He is a prophet, who loved the wages of wickedness, but was rebuked by a donkey-an animal without speech-who spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness (Num. 22:28). False prophets and false teachers are likewise worse than beasts.
The apostle Peter describes them metaphorically.
These people are springs without water and mists driven by a storm (17a). They teach about the happiness and satisfaction of life, but it is just an empty lie, like a spring without water, like an empty mist that disappears shortly after. They are very wicked ones who speak empty words of pride and seduce new believers from the lusts of the flesh by obscene, who are just escaping from those who live in error (18).
The dualistic sophistry of the Gnostics toward the spirit and body was a teaching that gave the wrong freedom to physically obscene. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. (17b).
Back to the place of destruction (verses 19-22)
False teachers are clearly those who have escaped from the gentile beliefs and have received the Grace of Jesus Christ. But they used that precious freedom given to them to again serve as slaves to sin. They are “slaves to destruction” (19b).
The apostle Peter explains: “If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning” (20).
This is the same lesson as Jesus' parable of the seven demons.
Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation” (Matt 12:45)
Once believing in Jesus but turning back to become a slave to sin and indulge in the world is the same disgust as a dog returns to its vomit (Proverbs 26:11) and a sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud (quoted from the book of Ahikar, Greek Jewish proverb).
Jesus freed us from sin by the grace of the cross. The Lord has proclaimed liberty to us “then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). We must not use it again for sin-indulgence!
The sinful nature that remains within us constantly tempts us into sin. But we have to fight back. Sometimes avoid it. We just cannot go back to the slaves of sin, to the life of the beast!
Only the power of the blood of the Lord can overcome the lusts of the flesh!
Let us seek Jesus every day, and ask for the power of the Blood. That way, we can cast away the past forever.
We already have separated from the sinful life of the past. Let us not even look back!
