1 바사 왕 고레스 제삼년에 한 일이 벨드사살이라 이름한 다니엘에게 나타났는데 그 일이 참되니 곧 큰 전쟁에 관한 것이라 다니엘이 그 일을 분명히 알았고 그 환상을 깨달으니라
2 그 때에 나 다니엘이 세 이레 동안을 슬퍼하며
3 세 이레가 차기까지 좋은 떡을 먹지 아니하며 고기와 포도주를 입에 대지 아니하며 또 기름을 바르지 아니하니라
4 첫째 달 이십사일에 내가 힛데겔이라 하는 큰 강 가에 있었는데
5 그 때에 내가 눈을 들어 바라본즉 한 사람이 세마포 옷을 입었고 허리에는 우바스 순금 띠를 띠었더라
6 또 그의 몸은 황옥 같고 그의 얼굴은 번갯빛 같고 그의 눈은 횃불 같고 그의 팔과 발은 빛난 놋과 같고 그의 말소리는 무리의 소리와 같더라
7 이 환상을 나 다니엘이 홀로 보았고 나와 함께 한 사람들은 이 환상은 보지 못하였어도 그들이 크게 떨며 도망하여 숨었느니라
8 그러므로 나만 홀로 있어서 이 큰 환상을 볼 때에 내 몸에 힘이 빠졌고 나의 아름다운 빛이 변하여 썩은 듯하였고 나의 힘이 다 없어졌으나
9 내가 그의 음성을 들었는데 그의 음성을 들을 때에 내가 얼굴을 땅에 대고 깊이 잠들었느니라
우리 말에 시작이 반이다 라는 속담이 있습니다. 그만큼 어떤 일이든 시작하는 것이 중요하다는 의미입니다. 그런데 사실 시작보다 더 중요한 것이 있다면 어떤 일을 끝까지 일관되게 잘 마무리 하는 것입니다. 우리 말 속담으로 치자면 가다가 중지하면 아니 감만 못하니라 일 것입니다.
2020년이 이제 3주 남았습니다. 특별한 한 해였고, 인생에서 경험하기 힘든 특별한 시간이었습니다. 일반적인 시간이 아니어서 평가하기가 어렵겠지만, 그래도 올 해 초 가졌던 마음 자세와 지금의 마음, 상황을 한 번쯤 비교하며 잘 마무리하고, 새로운 한 해를 다시 맞이하는 것이 좋겠습니다.
다니엘을 보면서 마음 속에서부터 잠잠하게 감동과 도전을 주는 장면이 오늘 본문입니다.
때는 바사왕 고레스 제삼년 입니다. 그러니까 고레스Cyrus the Great 왕이 바사왕으로 바벨론 지역에 취임한 후 삼년이 지났다는 것입니다. 그런데 이 때는 기준에 따라서 2~3년 정도 차이가 날 수 있습니다.
메대제국의 마지막 왕으로 고레스 왕의 장인이자 외삼촌인 다리오Darius the Mede 왕은 사위이자 조카인 고레스가 바벨론을 멸망시키고 점령하자, 그를 기뻐하여 자신의 딸과 함께 메대의 모든 왕권을 넘깁니다. 이에 화답하듯 사위인 고레스 왕은 다리오를 바벨론 지역의 왕으로 임명합니다.
장인인 다리오가 바벨론의 분봉왕이 된 것입니다.
메대 사람 다리오가 나라를 얻었는데 그 때에 다리오는 육십이 세였더라 (단 5:31)
이 때가 B.C.539년입니다. 그런데 다리오는 취임 후 2년이 지나고 죽습니다.
그리고 B.C. 536년에 고레스가 정식으로 바벨론의 왕으로 취임합니다.
이렇게 계산을 하면 고레스 제삼년은 B.C.534년이 되는 것입니다.
하지만 어떤 학자들은 고레스가 바벨론을 멸망시키고 장인 다리오를 분봉왕으로 임명한 B.C.539년을 기준으로 하여 고레스 제삼년을 B.C.536년으로 보기도 합니다.
어떤 것을 선택하든 괜찮습니다. 중요한 것은 이 때 다니엘의 나이는 85~90세라는 사실입니다.
얼마 지나지 않아 다니엘은 죽을 것입니다. 다니엘은 16살 청소년 때 하나님만 섬기기로 뜻을 정했던 삶의 태도를 죽음을 눈 앞에 둔 시점에도 계속 유지하고 있다는 사실입니다.
다니엘은 포로 생활 중에서도 바로 잊혀진 절기인 유월절과 무교절을 지킵니다. 혼자서 말입니다.
첫째 달 이십사일(4절) 이라는 의미는 유월절 후 10일 지난 것을 의미합니다. 전쟁의 환상(1절)을 보게 된 그는 혼자서 유월절, 무교절 기간을 3주간 금식 기도하며 보내기로 뜻을 정한 것입니다.
3일 금식도 힘든데, 90세의 노인이 3주간을 금식을 하기로 뜻을 정했다는 사실이 얼마나 도전을 주는지 모르겠습니다. 평생 다니엘의 삶은 그랬던 것입니다. 뜻을 정하고, 목숨을 걸고라도 하나님만을 구하고 하나님을 찾고 하나님을 사랑하는 사람!! 그 사람이 다니엘이었습니다.
이러한 자에게 주시는 은혜는 기도의 응답이고, 살아계신 하나님! 예수님을 만나는 은혜입니다.
마음이 청결한 자는 복이 있나니 그들이 하나님을 볼 것임이요(마 5:8)
그러나 네가 거기서 네 하나님 여호와를 찾게 되리니
만일 마음을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 그를 찾으면 만나리라(신 4:29)
다니엘은 힛데겔(티그리스 강) 강가에서 그의 수행원들과 함께 있다가 신비로운 일을 경험하게 됩니다. 다른 사람들은 환상을 보지 못했지만, 들려오는 소리나 기상 변화 등에 두려워하여 도망합니다. 다니엘에게 환상 가운데 한 사람이 나타나는데, 그는 성자이신 예수 그리스도로 사람의 모습으로 그에게 나타나신 것입니다.
5~6절에 묘사하는 그리스도의 모습은 성경에서 인간의 모습으로 나타나신 하나님의 모습 중 가장 자세한 묘사일 것입니다.
세마포 옷 은 베로 만든 희고 빛나는 옷으로 신적 위엄과 정결을 상징합니다.
허리에 찬 우바스 순금 띠 는 우바스 지역에서 나는 금으로 성자의 권위와 거룩함을 상징합니다.
또 그의 몸은 황옥 같고 그의 얼굴은 번갯빛 같고 그의 눈은 횃불 같고 그의 팔과 발은 빛난 놋과 같고 그의 말소리는 무리의 소리와 같더라(6)
다니엘이 환상 중에 본 예수님의 신체에 대한 묘사인데, 온 몸을 보석과 빛나는 빛과 불로 치장한 모습입니다. 역시 거룩과 위엄에 찬 모습입니다. 특히 그에게 들린 목소리는 무리의 소리와 같다 고 표현합니다. 이는 에스겔 선지자가 환상 가운데 보았던 신비한 생물들이 날 때 들려온 소리와 같은 것입니다.
많은 물 소리와도 같으며 전능자의 음성과도 같으며 떠드는 소리 곧 군대의 소리와도 같더니(겔 1:24b)
예수님의 음성을 들을 때에 다니엘은 몸에 힘이 빠지고, 얼굴 빛이 창백해지며 바로 기절합니다.
앞서 다니엘이 가브리엘 천사를 만났을 때(8:18)도 동일한 반응이 있었는데, 하물며 하나님이신 예수님을 만나니 이러한 반응은 죄인인 인간의 자연스러운 반응이라 생각합니다.
다니엘이 참 부럽습니다. 사실 꿈 많은 청소년 시절에 조국은 망하고, 부모를 잃고, 적국의 포로로 잡혀온 삶 자체는 불행에 가깝습니다. 아니 누구도 쉽게 경험할 수 없는 불행입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 다니엘은 뜻을 정하고 자기 주도적으로, 그리고 하나님 제일주의로 자신의 삶을 만들어 갑니다!
현대인들은 세상의 조류에 휩쓸리며 살아가고 있습니다. 유행에 민감하고, 남들이 하는 것은 다해야 하는 불안함이 있습니다. 그래서 바벨론보다 더 바벨론 같은 시대를 사는 현대인들에게 다니엘의 삶이 더 큰 도전을 준다고 생각합니다.
다시 한 번 다니엘처럼 뜻을 정합시다.
그리고 살아계신 예수를 날마다 삶 가운데 만나는 특권을 누립시다!
정권이 바뀌고, 시대가 바뀌고, 세상 조류가 파도처럼 밀려 올 지라도 흔들리지 않고 하나님만을 사랑하고 섬기는 다니엘과 같은 삶을 하나님 앞에 서는 날까지 살아내고 싶습니다.
오직 주님의 은혜로…
1 In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel (who was called Belteshazzar). Its message was true and it concerned a great war. The understanding of the message came to him in a vision.
2 At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. 3 I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.
4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris, 5 I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. 6 His body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude.
7 I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; those who were with me did not see it, but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves. 8 So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left, my face turned deathly pale and I was helpless. 9 Then I heard him speaking, and as I listened to him, I fell into a deep sleep, my face to the ground.
There is an old Korean proverb: the beginning is half of it. This saying means that whatever you do, the beginning is the most important. But if there is something that is even more important than the beginning, is how you finish the job. In our Korean proverb, it will be something like, If you stop in the middle of doing something, then you might as well not even have done it.
There are now 3 weeks left in the year 2020. It was a very special year, a year filled with something that we will probably never experience again.
It was a very unusual year to say the least so it is hard to compare this year to other years. But it will be beneficial for us to compare how we were in the beginning of the year and how we are now so that we can be better as we move towards a new year.
In today’s scriptures, we are touched and also challenged from the book of Daniel.
This story takes place in the 3rd year of Cyrus, King of Persia. In other words, it has been three years since Cyrus the Great has taken over in the area of Babylon. (There might a difference of 2-3 years depending on different standards and opinions)
The last king of the Medes, King Darius, father-in-law/uncle, rejoices when Cyrus, his son-in-law/nephew, conquers Babylon. And in result of that, Darius gives up his throne to Cyrus. And in response, Cyrus appoints Darius as the king of the Babylonian region.
So the father-in-law Daris became a district ruler.
Daris the Mede took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two (Daniel 5:31)
The year is BC 539. But Darius dies after just two years of being appointed.
And in BC 536, Cyrus officially becomes the King of Babylon.
So the third year of Cyrus must have been BC 534.
However some scholars say that the third year of Cyrus is BC 536.
Whichever year is fine. What is important is that Daniel was between the ages of 85 to 90.
So Daniel will die soon. And Daniel is still serving God fully with death looming just like when he was a young 16-year-old serving God.
Daniel, even during those years of captivity, observes passover and the feast of unleavened bread…..by himself.
The twenty-fourth day of the first month means that 10 days have passed since the passover. After seeing a vision of war, Daniel observes the passover by fasting and praying for 3 weeks.
Fasting for just 3 days is hard enough, but the fact that a 90-year-old old man decided to fast for 3 weeks challenges me so much. The whole life of Daniel has always been like this. He was always a person who would risk his life searching after God and loving God.
And through this, he receives the grace of meeting God and receives an answer to his prayer.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God (Matthew 5:8)
But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. (Deuteronomy 4:29)
Daniel experiences something really strange while staying with his attendants by the Tigris River. The others fled and were overwhelmed with fear even though they didn’t see anything. In the vision, a person appears to Daniel and that person is in the image of the Son, Jesus Christ.
The image of Christ which is described in verses 5-6 is perhaps the most detailed description in the bible.
Dressed in linen, meant that he was wearing white and shiny clothes made of linen and it symbolizes his divinity and purity.
Belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist symbolized his authority and holiness.
His body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude. (Verse 6)
So this is of course the description of the body of Jesus that he saw which was adorned with jewels, shining light, and fire. Again, this symbolizes his holiness and majesty. And he specifically says that the sound that he heard was like the sound of a multitude. This is the same sound that prophet Ezekiel heard in his vision when these mysterious creatures were flying.
Like the roar of rushing waters, like the voice of the Almighty, like the tumult of an army. (Ezekiel 1:24b)
When Daniel hears the voice of Jesus, he had no strength, he became pale and fell flat on the ground.
When Daniel saw angel Gabriel (8:18), he had a similar experience. but I think this is a natural response for any person because we are all sinners.
I am very envious of Daniel. Truth be told, his life is closer to that of a curse as his nation collapsed during his younger years, the loss of his parents, and the fact that he was in captivity. It is something that not many people would be able to handle. But even through all his hardship, he decides to make his life God first!
People of today are being swept away by the events that are taking place in the world. They are sensitive today’s trends and are anxious to do everything that everyone else is doing. That’s why I think the life of Daniel presents a greater challenge for us of today even more than the people of Babylon.
Let us make up our mind like Daniel.
Let’s enjoy the privilege of being able to meet Jesus in our lives! Even if the regime changes, the time changes, or if life comes at you like a big tidal wave, let us not be shaken and live like Daniel who only served God.
