영화 노인을 위한 나라는 없다No Country for Old Men는 2007년 코엔 형제Joel David Coen, Ethan Jesse Coen가 감독하고 토미 리 존스Tommy Lee Jones, 하비에르 바르뎀Javier Bardem, 조시 브롤린Josh Brolin 등이 출연한 미국의 범죄 스릴러 영화입니다.
코맥 매카시Cormac McCarthy의 동명의 소설을 원작으로 하는 이 영화는 1980년대 서부 텍사스 사막지대를 배경으로 하여 우연히 마약거래 현장에서 큰 돈가방을 손에 넣은 베트남 참전 군인이었던 주인공과 그를 죽이려 하는 사이코패스 킬러, 그리고 그들을 쫓는 은퇴를 앞둔 노인 보안관의 이야기를 담고 있습니다.
영화를 보면서 제목과 관련하여 영화가 말하고자 하는 바가 무엇일까 생각해 보았습니다. 은퇴를 앞둔 노인 보안관(토미 리 존스)은 3대째 보안관을 하는 선하며 헌신적이고, 현명한 지혜로운 사람입니다. 하지만 날이 갈수록 늘어나는 폭력과 사건들을 이해할 수 없습니다. 그는 영화 내내 주인공과 킬러를 추적하지만 한번도 그들을 만나지 못하는 무기력한 모습을 보여줍니다.
아마도 감독/작가는 날이 갈수록 예측하기 힘들게 변화하는 세상이 일반적이고 상식적인 지혜를 갖춘 노인, 곧 지성인들이 살기 점점 힘들어지는 세상이 되고 있음을 우회적으로 표현한 것이 아닌가 생각합니다.
영화 속에서 보안관이 이 나라가 이렇게 되기 시작한 것이 어른들에 대한 존대말이 없어지면서 부터야 라고 말하던 대사가 기억에 납니다. 무엇이든지 무너지는 것은 작은 문제에서부터 시작이 됩니다.
떠나라 (6-12절)
바울 역시 작지만 중요한 문제에 대해서 지적합니다. 게으르게 행하고 전통(가르침)대로 행하지 않는 형제에게서 떠나라(6절) 는 명령입니다. 먼저 이것은 해도 그만, 안 해도 그만이 아닌 반드시 순종해야 하는 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 명하는 명령입니다. 말하는 사람은 바울이지만, 예수님의 명령으로 받아야 하는 하나님의 말씀이라는 것입니다.
게으르게 행하고(아닼토스 페리파툰토스) 의 의미는 빈둥거리며 무질서하게 노는 것을 말합니다. 전통(파라도신)은 어떤 사람에게 넘겨진 것 이라는 의미로 여기서는 바울이 전한 복음과 말씀을 의미합니다. 게으르게 행하고 말씀에 순종하지 않는 자에게서 떠나라 는 명령입니다.
여기서 떠나라(스텔레스다이)는 멀리 보내 버린다 라는 의미로, John Calvin은 출교Excommunication와 같은 공식적인 추방이 아니라 개인적인 교우 관계를 멀리하라는 의미로 해석하였습니다.
이와 관련한 자세한 행동지침은 14절에서 다시 살펴 보겠습니다.
바울은 삶의 모범을 사도 바울 일행이 데살로니가 교회에 함께 있을 때 이미 보여주었기에 그들도 충분히 알고 있다고 말(7절)합니다. 사도의 삶은 질서정연했고, 반드시 음식 값을 지불하고 먹었으며, 주야로 일하여 어떤 성도에게도 부담을 끼치지 않았음을 상기(8절) 시킵니다.
사도로서 마땅히 섬김을 받을 권리 있었지만 그렇게 했던 이유는 데살로니가 교인들에게 본을 보여 자신들을 본받게 하려 했기 때문(9절)입니다.
여기서 권리(엨수시안)의 본래 의미는 좀 더 강력한 권세, 능력 이라는 의미입니다.
결국 바울이 이토록 철저하게 본을 보인 것은 바울 자신이 예수님의 본을 따른 것이고, 그러므로 성도들이 자신을 본받아 예수님의 본을 따르도록 하기 위함이었던 것입니다.
내가 그리스도를 본받는 자가 된 것 같이 너희는 나를 본받는 자가 되라 (고전 11:1)
이러한 교훈은 이미 그들과 함께 있을 때에도 명한 것입니다. 누구든지 일하기 싫어하거든 먹지도 말라 Εἴ τις οὐ θέλει ἐργάζεσθαι, μηδὲ ἐσθιέτω (에이 티스 우 델레이 엘가제스다이 메데 에스디에토)
F.F. Bruce는 이 명령은 네가 흙으로 돌아갈 때까지 얼굴에 땀을 흘려야 먹을 것을 먹으리니(창 3:19a) 에 근거한 명령이라고 해석합니다.
바울이 전해들은 바에 의하면 게으르게 행하며, 일만 만드는 자들(11절)가 있다는 것입니다. 어느 공동체나 이런 사람이 존재합니다. 남들은 다 열심히 일 하는데 빈둥거리면서(여기까지는 참을 수 있는데) 심지어 이래라 저래라 참견하기까지 하는 자들 말입니다.
정말 이런 분들은 싫습니다! 이런 분들을 어떻게 대해야 할까요?
먼저 사도의 가르침을 전해야 합니다. 조용히 일하고 자기 양식을 먹으라(12절) 각자에게 주어진 역할을 감당하고, 자신이 먹고 살 것을 책임지라는 것입니다. 그래도 이 편지(말씀, 가르침)에 순종하지 않는 자가 있으면 그 사람을 지목하여 사귀지 말고 그로 하여금 부끄럽게 해야(14절) 합니다.
놀라운 지침입니다! 우리는 교회에 대해서 오해합니다. 모든 것이 용납되는 곳이라고… 그렇지 않습니다!
교회의 사랑은 하나님의 거룩을 해치지 않는 선에서 행해져야 합니다. 현대교회는 사람들이 하나님보다 더 너그러운 것이 문제가 됩니다. 그리고 그런 교회가 진짜 교회라고 착각합니다. 그렇지 않습니다!
반드시 하나님의 말씀을 가르치고, 그 말씀에 순종해야 합니다. 단, 훈계적 행위의 바탕에 깔린 마음은 사랑(15절)입니다. 그렇게 따끔하게 훈계하는 이유는 그가 잘못을 깨닫고 부끄러움을 느껴, 주님께로 돌아오도록 하기 위한 사랑 때문인 것입니다.
선을 행하다가 낙심하지 말라 (13-18절)
이러한 행위가 진정한 선(善) 입니다. 하지만 이런 선을 행하는 것이 쉽지 않고, 낙심할 때도 있습니다.
그래서 사도 바울은 격려하고 있는 것입니다. 평강의 주께서 때마다(항상), 일마다(모든 일에) 평강을 주실 것이라고…(16절)
세상은 물론 심지어 교회를 보아도 더 이상 이성이나 상식이 통하지 않는 경우들을 종종 목격합니다. 사나워지고 게을러지며 자기 밖에 모르는 이기적인 세상의 풍토가 교회까지 밀려 들어옵니다.
그래서 노인(지혜롭고 상식적이고 예측 가능한 지성을 갖춘 사람)이 설 땅이 점점 줄어 듭니다.
무기력함을 느낍니다. 서글픈 현실입니다. 하지만 사도는 선을 행하다가 낙심하지 말라고 위로합니다. 여전히 주님을 사랑하고, 상식이 통하며, 서로를 돕고자 하는 선한 그루터기와 같은 보석 같은 자들이 곳곳에 숨겨져 있습니다. 아마도 새벽에 나와 기도하시는 여러분, 이 글을 읽으며 같이 묵상하고 나누며 기도하는 여러분들이 그런 존재가 아닌가 생각합니다.
그러므로 낙심하지 마십시오! 반드시 주님이 오셔서 노인이 살기 좋은 나라로 회복 시키실 것입니다.
6 In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. 7 For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, 8 nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. 9 We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”
11 We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies. 12 Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat. 13 And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.
14 Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them, in order that they may feel ashamed. 15 Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you would a fellow believer.
16 Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way.

The movie “No Country for Old Men” was directed by Coen brothers, Joel David Coen and Ethan Jesse Coen in 2007 and starred in Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, and more. It is an American crime thriller movie.
Based on the novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy, this film is set in the desert of western Texas in the 1980s, a protagonist who was a Vietnamese veteran who accidentally obtained a big bag of money at a drug trade scene, and a psychopath killer trying to kill him. And the story of an elderly sheriff who is about to retire after them.
As watched the movie, I thought about what the movie was trying to say about the title. The Elderly Sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones), who is about to retire, is a good, dedicated, wise man who serves as the third generation sheriff. But he couldn't understand the increasing violence and incidents. He followed the protagonist and killer throughout the film, but was a helpless figure that never met them, not even once.
Perhaps the director/writer wanted express indirectly that the world was changing more and more difficult to predict from day to day, becoming a world where it was becoming increasingly difficult for the elderly with common sense and wisdom to live.
I remember the line in the movie when the sheriff said that this country began to be like this only after the respect for elderly disappeared. Anything that falls apart starts with a small problem.
Keep away (verses 6-12)
Paul also points out a small but important problem. It is a command to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching (verse 6). First of all, this is a command in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ that must be obeyed, not just if you stop doing it or not. It is Paul who speaks, but it is the word of God that must be received by Jesus' command.
Being idle (Anitos peripatuntos) means to screw around and play in disorder.
Tradition (paradoxine) means that it has been handed over to someone, and here it means the gospel and the word that Paul preached. It is a command to walk away from those who are lazy and do not obey the Word.
Keep away (Stelesdie) means to send far away, and John Calvin interpreted it to mean avoiding personal fellowship, rather than formal deportation such as Excommunication.
Detailed instructions for action in this regard will be reviewed later in verse 14.
Paul says that they knew enough (v. 7) because the apostle Paul and his companions had already set an example in life when they were together in Thessalonica church.
Remind them that he did not eat anyones food without paying for it, he worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that he would not be a burden to any of them (v. 8)
As an apostle, he did this, not because he did not have the right to such help, but in order to make himself a model for them to follow (v. 9)
Here, the original meaning of right (Yesusian) means more powerful authority and power.
In the end, Paul set the example so thoroughly that Paul himself was following Jesus' example, so that the saints could imitate himself and follow Jesus' example.
Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:1)
These lessons were commanded even when he was already with them. If a man will not work, he shall not eat. Εἴ τις οὐ θέλει ἐργάζεσθαι, μηδὲ ἐσθιέτω (Athys Wu Delay Elgassdai Mede Sdieto)
F.F. Bruce interprets this command as a command based on “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground,”(Gen. 3:19a).
According to what Paul has heard, there are people who are lazy and only make work (verse 11). Any community like this type of person exists. Everyone else is working hard, but people who sit around (I can stand up to this point), but even interfere.
Really hate these people! How should we treat this kind of people?
First, we must preach the teachings of the apostle. Work quietly and eat your own food (v. 12) It is to take responsibility for his own food and livelihood. Still, if there is someone who does not obey this letter (words, teachings), they must take special note of him. Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed (verse 14).
That's an amazing guide! We misunderstand the church. It's a place where everything is acceptable... No, it's not!
The love of the church must be done without harming the holiness of God. The problem of modern churches is that people are more generous than God. And misunderstand that such a church is a real church. No, it's not!
We must teach the Word of God and obey it. However, the heart underlying the admonitional act is love (verse 15). The reason for tingly admonishment is because of love to make him realize his fault, feel ashamed, and return to the Lord.
Do not be discouraged in doing good (verses 13-18)
These actions are real good. However, it is not easy to do this kind of good, and sometimes we are discouraged.
That is why the apostle Paul is encouraging. The Lord of Peace himself give you peace at all times (always), and in every way (everything)... (Verse 16)
We often see cases where rationality or common sense no longer makes sense when we look at the world and even the church.
The climate of a world of ferocity, laziness, and selfishness that only knows himself flows into the church.
So there is less and less space for the elderly (a person with wise, common sense, and predictable intelligence).
Feel helpless. It's sad reality. However, the apostle comforts us not to be discouraged while doing good. There are still hidden gems like good remnants who love the Lord, share common sense, and help each other. Perhaps everyone who comes out in the morning and prays, and who meditate, share, and pray together as you read this article.
So don't be discouraged! The Lord will surely come and restore a good country where the elderly can live.
