1 이러므로 우리가 참다 못하여 우리만 아덴에 머물기를 좋게 생각하고
2 우리 형제 곧 그리스도의 복음을 전하는 하나님의 일꾼인 디모데를 보내노니 이는 너희를 굳건하게 하고 너희 믿음에 대하여 위로함으로
3 아무도 이 여러 환난 중에 흔들리지 않게 하려 함이라 우리가 이것을 위하여 세움 받은 줄을 너희가 친히 알리라
4 우리가 너희와 함께 있을 때에 장차 받을 환난을 너희에게 미리 말하였는데 과연 그렇게 된 것을 너희가 아느니라
5 이러므로 나도 참다 못하여 너희 믿음을 알기 위하여 그를 보내었노니 이는 혹 시험하는 자가 너희를 시험하여 우리 수고를 헛되게 할까 함이니
6 지금은 디모데가 너희에게로부터 와서 너희 믿음과 사랑의 기쁜 소식을 우리에게 전하고 또 너희가 항상 우리를 잘 생각하여 우리가 너희를 간절히 보고자 함과 같이 너희도 우리를 간절히 보고자 한다 하니
7 이러므로 형제들아 우리가 모든 궁핍과 환난 가운데서 너희 믿음으로 말미암아 너희에게 위로를 받았노라
8 그러므로 너희가 주 안에 굳게 선즉 우리가 이제는 살리라
9 우리가 우리 하나님 앞에서 너희로 말미암아 모든 기쁨으로 기뻐하니 너희를 위하여 능히 어떠한 감사로 하나님께 보답할까
10 주야로 심히 간구함은 너희 얼굴을 보고 너희 믿음이 부족한 것을 보충하게 하려 함이라
11 하나님 우리 아버지와 우리 주 예수는 우리 길을 너희에게로 갈 수 있게 하시오며
12 또 주께서 우리가 너희를 사랑함과 같이 너희도 피차간과 모든 사람에 대한 사랑이 더욱 많아 넘치게 하사
13 너희 마음을 굳건하게 하시고 우리 주 예수께서 그의 모든 성도와 함께 강림하실 때에 하나님 우리 아버지 앞에서 거룩함에 흠이 없게 하시기를 원하노라
보통 운동경기에서 감독이 선수를 기용하는 것을 가리켜 용병술이라고 표현합니다. 적절한 타이밍에 필요한 선수를 넣거나 또는 지치거나 컨디션이 좋지 않은 선수를 빼는 것은 전적으로 감독의 권한으로 이에 따라 경기의 흐름이 바뀌어 승패가 결정되기도 합니다.
오늘 본문에서 바울은 그의 팀의 감독의 역할로서 어린 목회자인 디모데를 기용하여 데살로니가 교회로 파송합니다. 1-10절은 어떻게 디모데를 파송하게 되었는지, 그리고 그가 다시 바울에게 돌아와서 목회의 결과를 보고 하는 내용입니다. 그리고 11-13절은 바울의 간절한 기도의 내용입니다.
디모데 파송과 목회 보고 (1-10절)
1절 이러므로 는 헬라어 디오 로 이러한 이유에서 라는 의미입니다.
앞선 2장에서 밝힌 대로 데살로니가 교인들을 보고 싶은 마음을 말합니다.
참다 못하여 에서 참다(스테곤테스) 는 본래는 물과 같은 액체를 용기에 넣어서 새지 못하게 하는 것을 뜻했는데, 이것이 참다, 견디다 라는 의미가 된 것입니다.
2-3절 바울은 데살로니가 교인을 보고 싶은 마음에 참다 못하여 자신과 나머지 일행은 아덴에 머물고, 디모데를 데살로니가로 파송합니다. 그를 보냄은 그들을 굳건하게 하고 믿음을 위로하기 위함입니다.
바울이 데살로니가를 떠나 온 이유도 유대인들의 핍박 때문이었기에 혹시라도 초신자인 데살로니가 교인들이 환난 중에 흔들리지 않을까 염려가 되었던 것입니다.
흔들리다 에 해당하는 헬라어는 사이네스다이 인데, 이것은 강아지가 꼬리를 마구 흔드는 모습을 묘사하는 것으로, 여기서는 그들의 믿음의 동요를 의미합니다.
사도는 성도들의 믿음이 굳건하게 서도록 돕는 것을 위해 세움 받은 존재입니다.
4절 사실 그리스도인이 환난을 당하는 것은 불가피한 일입니다.
바울과 바나바는 루스드라, 이고니온, 안디옥 지역의 성도들에게 다음과 같이 격려했습니다.
제자들의 마음을 굳게 하여 이 믿음에 머물러 있으라 권하고
또 우리가 하나님의 나라에 들어가려면 많은 환난을 겪어야 할 것이라 하고 (행 14:22)
5절 바울은 다시 한번 참지 못하여 를 사용합니다. 다만 앞서 1절에서는 우리 라는 주어를 사용하였고, 이곳에서는 나도 라는 일인칭단수를 사용합니다. 무리의 대표이자 동시에 개인으로도 데살로니가 교인들을 보고 싶어 하는 사도의 간절한 심정을 나타내는 것입니다.
시험 하는 자 는 본질적으로 2:18절의 사탄을 의미하며, 실제로는 그들을 핍박하는 유대인들이나, 이방인 무리를 가리킵니다. 그들은 거짓과 이간질로 사도들이 이루어 놓은 수고를 헛되게 하려는 자들입니다.
6절부터는 디모데가 고린도 지역에 머물고 있는 바울에게 돌아와 목회보고 한 것을 들은 후 내용입니다.
디모데로부터 그들이 굳건하게 믿음 가운데 지내고 있다는 소식을 듣고, 바울은 그것을 믿음과 사랑의 기쁜 소식 이라고 표현합니다. 마치 복음을 들었을 때와 같은 기쁨이라는 표현입니다.
7-8절 비록 사도의 일행이 현재 궁핍과 환난 가운데 있지만, 바울이 그들을 보고 싶어하는 것처럼 그들 역시 사도 일행을 보고 싶어한다는 것과 그들의 믿음이 주 안에 굳건하게 서있다는 소식은 사도에게 큰 위로를 줍니다.
데살로니가 교인들이 잘 지낸다는 소식을 접한 바울은 우리가 이제는 살리라 라고 고백합니다.
여기서 살리라 에 해당하는 헬라어는 조멘 인데, F.F.브루스Bruce는 생명의 호흡Breath of life으로 해석하여 고난과 환난 가운데에서도, 그들이 믿음 위에 굳건하게 서있다는 소식을 듣고 안도의 한숨을 내쉬는 것으로 해석했습니다. 자신은 힘들고 어려운 상황이어도 멀리 떠난 보낸 자녀가 잘 지낸다는 소식을 듣는 부모의 마음과 같은 것입니다.
9-10절 바울은 이 모든 일로 인하여 기뻐하고 기뻐합니다. 그리고 그 모든 감사를 하나님께 돌립니다. 도저히 어떤 감사로 하나님께 보답해야 할지 모를 정도입니다.
성도를 사랑하는 사도의 마음이 잘 표현되었습니다.
이제 사도가 간절히 주야로 기도하는 것은 그들과 재회하여 그들의 믿음이 부족한 것, 곧 3주 밖에 말씀을 가르치지 못한 것을 보충하는 것입니다. 비록 믿음으로 굳건하게 서있지만 믿음의 초신자들인 그들은 배워야 할 것이 아직 많이 있습니다.
사도의 기도 (11-13절)
11절 바울은 먼저 하나님 우리 아버지를 부릅니다. 그는 인간의 모든 계획은 하나님이 허락하지 않으면 아무 소용이 없다는 사실을 잘 알고 있습니다. 또한 우리 주 예수 는 아버지와 하나이십니다. 그러므로 바울은 삼위일체 하나님께서 데살로니가로 가는 길을 인도하여 주실 것을 간구합니다.
12절 두 번째로는 피차간에 모든 사람에 대한 사랑이 넘치기를 간구합니다.
이 사랑은 주께서 사도들에게 주사 그들을 사랑하게 하신 바로 그 사랑입니다. 이러한 사랑이 넘칠 때 그들의 마음은 사랑 안에서 더욱 굳건하게 될 것입니다.
13절 마지막으로 바울은 데살로니가 교인들이 예수께서 강림하실 때에 하나님 아버지 앞에서 거룩함에 흠이 없게 하시기를 간구합니다. 결국 영원한 생명에 이르는 은혜를 구하는 것입니다.
바울이 데살로니가 교인들을 위하여 구한 기도를 살펴보십시오.
모두가 영적인 것과 영적인 교제에 관한 것입니다. 당시 상황을 생각하면 고난이나 환난을 막아주시고, 피할 길을 달라고 기도할 만도 한데, 오직 영적인 것을 간구합니다.
속히 만나게 해주시고, 피차 사랑이 넘치게 해주시며, 주 예수의 재림 때까지 거룩하게 지켜달라는 아름다운 기도는 코로나 상황 가운데 있는 오늘날 성도들의 가장 최우선적인 기도 제목이 되어야 할 것 같습니다.
다시 만날 그 날까지 거룩하게 지켜주시기를, 그리고 비록 지금은 직접 만나지는 못하지만 서로 피차 뜨거운 사랑으로 사랑하는 공동체 되기를 기도합시다!
1 So when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens. 2 We sent Timothy, who is our brother and co-worker in God’s service in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, 3 so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. For you know quite well that we are destined for them. 4 In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know. 5 For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter had tempted you and that our labors might have been in vain.
6 But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you. 7 Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. 8 For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord. 9 How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you? 10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.
11 Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you. 12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. 13 May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.
In general, when a head coach appoints a player in athletic events, it is referred to as mercenary skill aka tactics. It is entirely the coach's responsibility to put in the necessary players at the right time, or to remove those who are tired or in poor condition, and the flow of the game may change accordingly which results in a win or lose.
In today's scripture, Paul appoints Timothy, a young pastor, as the coach of his team, and sends him to the church in Thessalonica.
Verses 1-10 are about how Timothy was sent and he returned to Paul to report the results of his ministry. And verses 11-13 are the contents of Paul's earnest prayer.
Dispatch of Timothy and Pastoral Report (verses 1-10)
Verse 1 the word “so” in Greek is Dio which means “on account of”.
As stated in the chapter 2, Paul expressed his desire to see the Thessalonians.
“Could stand it no longer” the Greek word “stegontes” originally means to put a liquid such as water into a container and prevent it from leaking. This is the origin of the word “endure”.
Verses 2-3 Paul could not stand the desire to see the Thessalonians, so while he and the rest of the companions stayed in Athens, he sent Timothy to Thessalonica.
In order to strengthen the Thessalonians and encourage their faith.
The reason Paul left Thessalonica was because of the persecution of the Jews, so he was worried that the new believers in Thessalonica would be unsettled during the trials.
The word “shaken” in Greek is Sainesthai which refers to how a puppy wiggles its tail meaning agitation of their faith.
The apostle was elected to help the believers stand firm in their faith.
Verse 4 in fact, it is inevitable for Christians to face trials.
Paul and Barnabas encouraged the believers in Lystra, Igonion, and Antioch with:
Strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith.
"We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God," they said.
(Acts 14:22)
Verse 5 again Paul uses the expression “I could stand it no longer”. However, in verse 1 above, the subject of “we” was used, and here, the first person singular “I” is used. It expresses the apostle's earnest desire to see the Thessalonian believers as both representatives of the group and as an individual.
The tempter essentially means Satan in Chapter 2:18, and physically refers to a group of Jews or Gentiles who persecute them. They are the ones who try to vain the labors of the apostles through lies and mischief.
Verse 6 is the pastoral report of Timothy after he returned to Paul, who was staying in Corinth. When he heard from Timothy that they are firmly living in the faith, Paul described it as the good news of faith and love. It is an expression of joy as if hearing the Gospel.
Verses 7-8 although the apostles' company is currently in poverty and tribulation, the news that they want to see the apostles as well as Paul wants to see them, and that their faith is standing firmly in the Lord gives great comfort to the apostles.
Upon hearing the news that the Thessalonian believers are doing well, Paul confesses that “for now we really live”.
Here, the word “live” in Greek is Zomen and F.F. Bruce interpreted it as the "Breath of life" explaining it as exhaling a sigh of relief when he heard the news that they stood firmly on the faith even in the midst of suffering and trials. It is like the hearts of parents, despite their difficulty and hardships, who hear the news that their children who have sent far away are doing well.
Verses 9-10 Paul rejoices and rejoices again over all this. And he gives all that gratitude to God. He does not know how to thank God enough for all their joy.
The apostle's love for the believers is well expressed.
Now, the apostle's earnest prayer night and day is to reunite with them to make up for their lack of faith, because Paul could only teach them the Word for three weeks. Even though they stand firm in the faith, as new believers in the faith, they still have a lot to learn.
Apostle’s Prayer (verses 11-13)
Verse 11 Paul first calls God our Father. He knows well that all human plans are useless unless God allows them. Also, our Lord Jesus is one with the Father. Hence Paul asks for the Trinity God to lead the way to Thessalonica.
Verse 12 secondly, Paul asks the Lord to “make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else”. This is the love the Lord gave the Apostles to love the believers. When this love overflows, their hearts will become stronger in love.
Verse 13 lastly, Paul asks that “you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.”
Ultimately, in the end, the apostle is seeking grace leading to eternal life.
Take a look at the prayer Paul asked for the Thessalonians. It is all about spiritual things and spiritual fellowship. Considering the situation at the time, it was worth praying for ways to avoid suffering and trials, but instead he asked for spiritual things alone.
A beautiful prayer that asks for us to reunite quickly; let our love overflow for each other; and keep us holy until the return of the Lord Jesus, must be the most important prayer subjects of us today in this coronavirus pandemic.
Lord, keep us holy until the day we meet again. And although we are unable to meet in person now, let us pray that we are a community of love overflowing for each other!
