12 바벨론의 느부갓네살 왕의 열아홉째 해 다섯째 달 열째 날에 바벨론 왕의 어전 사령관 느부사라단이 예루살렘에 이르러
13 여호와의 성전과 왕궁을 불사르고 예루살렘의 모든 집과 고관들의 집까지 불살랐으며
14 사령관을 따르는 갈대아 사람의 모든 군대가 예루살렘 사면 성벽을 헐었더라
15 사령관 느부사라단이 백성 중 가난한 자와 성중에 남아 있는 백성과 바벨론 왕에게 항복한 자와 무리의 남은 자를 사로잡아 갔고
16 가난한 백성은 남겨 두어 포도원을 관리하는 자와 농부가 되게 하였더라
17 갈대아 사람은 또 여호와의 성전의 두 놋기둥과 받침들과 여호와의 성전의 놋대야를 깨뜨려 그 놋을 바벨론으로 가져갔고
18 가마들과 부삽들과 부집게들과 주발들과 숟가락들과 섬길 때에 쓰는 모든 놋그릇을 다 가져갔고
19 사령관은 잔들과 화로들과 주발들과 솥들과 촛대들과 숟가락들과 바리들 곧 금으로 만든 물건의 금과 은으로 만든 물건의 은을 가져갔더라
20 솔로몬 왕이 여호와의 성전을 위하여 만든 두 기둥과 한 바다와 그 받침 아래에 있는 열두 놋 소 곧 이 모든 기구의 놋 무게는 헤아릴 수 없었더라
21 그 기둥은 한 기둥의 높이가 십팔 1)규빗이요 그 둘레는 십이 규빗이며 그 속이 비었고 그 두께는 네 손가락 두께이며
22 기둥 위에 놋머리가 있어 그 높이가 다섯 규빗이요 머리 사면으로 돌아가며 꾸민 망사와 석류가 다 놋이며 또 다른 기둥에도 이런 모든 것과 석류가 있었더라
23 그 사면에 있는 석류는 아흔여섯 개요 그 기둥에 둘린 그물 위에 있는 석류는 도합이 백 개이었더라
캘리포니아 가든 그로브 California Garden Grove 에 가면 긍정의 힘의 원조요, 미국의 번영신학의 대가 로버트 슐러Dr. Robert Schuller 목사가 1980년에 봉헌한 수정교회Crystal Cathedral 가 있습니다.
수정교회 건물은 유명 건축가 필립 존슨의 작품으로 건물 외부는1만장의 유리판으로 구성되어 있으며, 교회내부는 그 자체가 하나의 악기인 파이프 오르간입니다. 매해 수많은 관광객이 다녀가는 지역의 명소였고, 특별예배나 부활절, 성탄절 행사는 그 어떤 쇼를 능가하는 퍼포먼스를 보여주었습니다.
수정교회는 모든 면에서 자타가 공인하는 미국 제일의 교회였습니다.
하지만 지난 미국 금융위기가 닥친 2010년, 영원할 것 같았던 수정교회는 로버트 슐러 목사의 장녀 쉐일라 슐러 콜맨Sheila Schuller Coleman 목사의 교회 세습 문제와 방대한 경영으로 말미암아 파산 신청을 하게 됩니다. 자칫 잘못하면 엉뚱한 단체가 교회 건물을 매입하려 했는데, 그나마 다행히도 카톨릭 오렌지 카운티 교구에 매각되어 2019년 7월 17일 그리스도 대성당Christ Cathedral이라는 새로운 이름으로 축성식을 하였습니다.
엘리Eli 제사장의 불량한 두 아들, 홉비와 비느하스Hophni and Phinehas는 블레셋과의 전투에서 이스라엘이 밀리자 하나님의 법궤를 가지고 옵니다. 하지만 결과는 변하지 않았습니다. 더 나빠집니다.
하나님의 궤는 빼앗겼고 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스는 죽임을 당하였더라 (삼상 4:11)
이에 어떤 베냐민 사람이 이 소식을 엘리 제사장에게 알립니다. 나이 많고 비대했던 엘리 제사장은 여호와 법궤를 빼앗겼다는 소식을 듣는 순간 의자에서 뒤로 넘어져 목숨을 잃습니다. 불행은 여기서 그치지 않습니다. 이 모든 소식이 전해지는 순간 비느하스의 아내가 출산을 하여 아들을 낳지만, 자신은 죽게 됩니다. 그러면서 마지막으로 다음과 같이 말합니다.
이르기를 영광이 이스라엘에서 떠났다 하고 아이 이름을 이가봇이라 하였으니
하나님의 궤가 빼앗겼고 그의 시아버지와 남편이 죽었기 때문이며
또 이르기를 하나님의 궤를 빼앗겼으므로 영광이 이스라엘에서 떠났다 하였더라
(삼상 4:21-22)
하나님의 궤를 빼앗겨서 여호와의 영광이 이스라엘을 떠난 것일까요? 아니면 여호와의 영광이 이미 이스라엘을 떠났기에 궤를 빼앗긴 것일까요? 빼앗긴 여호와의 영광, 곧 법궤는 다윗 시대에 비로소 예루살렘으로 돌아오게 됩니다. 그리고는 그의 아들 솔로몬에 의해 초라한 성막이 아닌 화려한 솔로몬 성전에 머물게 됩니다. 성전과 예루살렘 성은 바로 다윗과 솔로몬으로 이어지는 시대에 지어진 하나님의 영광의 상징입니다.
오늘 본문은 그 여호와의 영광이 이방인 느부갓네살 왕과 그의 부하 느부사라단에 의해 철저하게 파괴되는 장면을 묘사하고 있습니다.
12-16절 B.C.586년 느부갓네살 왕의 총사령관 느부사라단은 왕의 명령을 받고 예루살렘과 성전과 왕궁, 집을 불사르고 성벽을 헐어버립니다. 폐허간 된 유다 본토에는 소수의 연약한 빈민을 남겨 포도원과 밭을 관리하는 일을 맡깁니다.
17-19절 놋과 금, 은으로 만든 성전의 모든 기구들이 철저하게 갈대아 사람들과 총사령관 느부사라단에 의해 유린당하는 모습입니다.
20-23절 솔로몬 성전의 영광을 상징하는 화려한 두 놋기둥 야긴과 보아스에 대한 이야기입니다. 놋기둥에 대한 자세한 것은 열왕기상 7:15-39절에 소개되어 있습니다. 당시 얼마나 화려하고 아름답게 여호와의 성전을 꾸몄는지 엿볼 수 있는 기록입니다. 하지만 이 모든 영광도 허무할 뿐입니다.
한 순간에 이방인의 손에 의해 산산조각 나는 것을 유대인들은 어떻게 받아들여야 할까요?
바벨론 포로의 시간이 50년이 지나고, B.C.538년 고레스 칙령에 의하여 1차 포로귀환이 시작되고,
총독 스룹바벨에 의하여 성전재건이 시작됩니다. 하지만 이 스룹바벨 성전은 사마리아 사람들의 방해로 20년이 지난 B.C516년에서야 준공하게 됩니다. 유다가 멸망하고 정확하게 70년이 지난 시점입니다.
학개 선지서는 바로 1차 포로귀환 후 성전을 재건하는 스룹바벨과 백성들에게 주어진 격려의 메시지입니다. 수고로이 성전의 기초를 놓은 후 예전의 솔로몬 성전의 화려하고 웅장했던 영광을 상상했던 백성들이 현실의 보잘것없는 성전 기초를 보고 큰소리로 통곡합니다.
이에 학개 선지자에게 여호와의 말씀이 임합니다.
이 성전의 나중 영광이 이전 영광보다 크리라 만군의 여호와의 말이니라
내가 이 곳에 평강을 주리라 만군의 여호와의 말이니라 (학 2:9)
두 번째 성전인 스룹바벨 성전의 영광이 이전 솔로몬 성전의 영광보다 훨씬 클 것이라는 말씀입니다.
예언대로 신약시대에 육신을 입으신 하나님, 성자 예수께서 평강의 왕으로 성전에 임하십니다!
우리는 크고 화려한 예배당을 볼 때 저절로 하나님의 위대하심과 영광을 생각하고 찬양하게 됩니다. 하지만 하나님께서는 여호와의 영광은 건물의 웅장함이나 화려함에 있는 것이 아니라고 말씀하십니다.
성전의 유무, 법궤의 유무가 여호와의 영광의 유무로 연결되는 것이 아닙니다.
여호와의 영광은 그곳에 평강의 왕이신 예수, 성령님이 함께 하시느냐, 아니냐에 따른 것입니다.
하나님은 영이십니다. 눈에 보이는 건물이나 법궤가 있다고 하나님이 반드시 함께하는 것이 아닙니다.
홉니와 비느하스는 법궤가 있어도 패배했고, 다윗은 법궤 없이도 승리했습니다.
본질은 법궤를 향한 마음, 곧 법궤의 주인 되시는 하나님을 향한 우리의 마음입니다.
결국 여호와의 영광이 충만하기 위해서는 하나님을 사랑해야 합니다.
평강의 왕이신 예수가 충만해야 하고, 성령이 충만할 때 진짜 여호와의 영광이 충만한 것입니다.
앞서 말한 수정교회가 다행히도 사라지지 않았습니다. 쉐퍼즈 그로브Shepherd’s Grove (목자의 숲) 라는 새이름으로 로버트 슐러의 손자인 바비 슐러Bobby Schuller가 담임하고 있습니다www.shepherdsgrove.org.
비록 예전 수정교회 시절의 규모, 퍼포먼스, 재정과는 비교가 되지 않겠지만, 어쩌면 지금이 더 하나님의 영광이 충만한 교회는 아닐까 조심스럽게 생각해봅니다. 어떤 외적인 변화에 상관없이 여호와의 영광이 충만한 교회 되기를 형제 된 마음으로 쉐퍼즈 그로브와 모든 교회를 위하여 기도합니다.
12 On the tenth day of the fifth month, in the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard, who served the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. 13 He set fire to the temple of the Lord, the royal palace and all the houses of Jerusalem. Every important building he burned down. 14 The whole Babylonian army, under the commander of the imperial guard, broke down all the walls around Jerusalem. 15 Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard carried into exile some of the poorest people and those who remained in the city, along with the rest of the craftsmen and those who had deserted to the king of Babylon. 16 But Nebuzaradan left behind the rest of the poorest people of the land to work the vineyards and fields.
17 The Babylonians broke up the bronze pillars, the movable stands and the bronze Sea that were at the temple of the Lord and they carried all the bronze to Babylon. 18 They also took away the pots, shovels, wick trimmers, sprinkling bowls, dishes and all the bronze articles used in the temple service. 19 The commander of the imperial guard took away the basins, censers, sprinkling bowls, pots, lampstands, dishes and bowls used for drink offerings—all that were made of pure gold or silver.
20 The bronze from the two pillars, the Sea and the twelve bronze bulls under it, and the movable stands, which King Solomon had made for the temple of the Lord, was more than could be weighed. 21 Each pillar was eighteen cubits high and twelve cubits in circumference; each was four fingers thick, and hollow. 22 The bronze capital on top of one pillar was five cubits high and was decorated with a network and pomegranates of bronze all around. The other pillar, with its pomegranates, was similar. 23 There were ninety-six pomegranates on the sides; the total number of pomegranates above the surrounding network was a hundred.
In California Garden Grove, there is Crystal Cathedral, dedicated in 1980 by Rev. Robert Schuller, the founder of source of positive power and the master of American prosperity theology.
The Crystal Church building is the work of famous architect Philip Johnson. The exterior of the building is made of 10,000 sheets of glass, and the interior of the church is itself a pipe organ, an instrument. It was a local attraction where tens of thousands of tourists visit every year, and special worship services, Easter, and Christmas events showed performances that surpassed any other show.
Crystal Church was the number one church in the United States recognized by itself in all respects.
However, in 2010, when the US financial crisis hit, the Crystal Church, which seemed to be forever, filed for bankruptcy due to the hereditary problem and extensive management of the pastor Sheila Schuller Coleman, the eldest daughter of Rev. Robert Schuller. It could be sold to wacky organization, but fortunately, it was sold to the Catholic Diocese of Orange County and held a consecration ceremony under the new name Christ Cathedral on July 17, 2019.
Priest Eli's two wicked sons, Hophni and Phinehas, brought the ark of God when Israel was defeated in the battle against the Philistines. But the results have not changed. It got worse.
The ark of God was captured, and Eli's two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died. (1 Sam. 4:11).
So, a Benjamin man informed the priest Eli of this news. The old and fat Priest Eli fell back from his chair and died when he heard that the ark of Jehovah had been captured. The misfortune does not stop there. As soon as all this news was delivered, Phinehas's wife gave birth to a son, but she died. And she left final words as follow:
She named the boy Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel" -- because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband.”
She said, “The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”
(1 Sam. 4:21-22)
The glory of Jehovah left Israel because the ark of God was captured? Or was the Ark taken because the glory of Jehovah had already left Israel? The stolen glory of Jehovah, the ark of the law, finally returned to Jerusalem in the time of David. Then, by his son Solomon, the LORD stayed in the splendid Solomon temple, not in the shabby tabernacle. The temple and the city of Jerusalem were symbols of God's glory, built in the times leading up to David and Solomon.
Today's scripture depicts a scene where the glory of Jehovah is thoroughly destroyed by Gentile King, Nebuchadnezzar and his subordinate Nebusaradan.
Verse 12-16 In B.C. 586, Nebusaradan, commander of King Nebuchadnezzar, under the king's order, burned Jerusalem, the temple, the palace, and the houses, and destroyed the walls. The ruined mainland of Judah was left with a handful of fragile slums to manage the vineyards and fields.
Verses 17-19 All the instruments of the temple made of bronze, gold, and silver were thoroughly trampled down by the Chaldeans and the commander-in-chief Nebusaradan.
Verses 20-23 This is the story of Jachin and Boaz, two ornate bronze pillars that symbolize the glory of Solomon's temple. Details of the bronze pillar are introduced in 1 Kings 7:15-39. This is a record that gives a glimpse of how splendidly and beautifully the temple of Jehovah was decorated at that time. But all of this glory is only in vain.
How should the Jews accept that in one moment being shattered by a Gentile hands?
50 years passed by the Babylonian prisoners of war, and the first return of the prisoners of war began under the edict of Cyrus in B.C. 538,
The rebuilding of the temple begins by the governor Zerubbabel. However, this Zerubbabel Temple was not completed until 20 years later B.C.516 due to the interference of the Samaritans. It is precisely 70 years after Judah's destruction.
The book of Prophet of Haggai is a message of encouragement given to Zerubbabel and the people to rebuild the temple after the first return of captivity. After laboring to lay the foundation of this temple, the people who had imagined the splendid and grand glory of the former Solomon temple cried out loud when they saw the insignificant foundation of the temple in reality.
Thus, the word of Jehovah comes to the prophet Haggai.
“The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house, says the LORD Almighty. And in this place I will grant peace, declares the LORD Almighty.”
(Hag. 2:9)
It is said that the glory of the second temple, Zerubbabel, will be greater than that of the previous Solomon temple.
According to the prophecy, the Holy Son, the God incarnate in the New Testament era, is coming to the temple as the King of Peace!
When we see a large and colorful chapel, we naturally think and praise God's greatness and glory. However, God says that Jehovah's glory is not in the grandeur or splendor of a building.
The presence or absence of a temple or an ark does not lead to the presence or absence of Jehovah's glory.
The glory of Jehovah depends on whether or not Jesus, the King of Peace, and the Holy Spirit is present there.
God is the Spirit. Just because there is a visible building or an ark, does not mean that God is with you.
Hophni and Phinehas were defeated with the ark, and David triumphed without the ark.
The essence is our heart toward the ark, that is, our heart toward God who is the master of the ark. After all, in order to be full of the glory of Jehovah, we must love God.
Jesus, the King of Peace, must be full, and when the person is filled with the Holy Spirit, the true glory of Jehovah is full.
Fortunately, the Crystal Church mentioned earlier has not disappeared. Shepherd's Grove is hosted by Robert Schuller's grandson, Bobby Schuller at www.shepherdsgrove.org.
Although it can not be comparable to the scale, performance, and finances of the former Crystal Church, I wonder if this is a church that is more full of the glory of God. Pray with a brotherly heart for the Shepherd’s Grove and all the churches that become the church filled with the glory of Jehovah, regardless of any external changes.
