54 바벨론으로부터 부르짖는 소리가 들리도다 갈대아 사람의 땅에 큰 파멸의 소리가 들리도다
55 이는 여호와께서 바벨론을 황폐하게 하사 그 큰 소리를 끊으심이로다 원수는 많은 물 같이 그 파도가 사나우며 그 물결은 요란한 소리를 내는도다

60 예레미야가 바벨론에 닥칠 모든 재난 곧 바벨론에 대하여 기록한 이 모든 말씀을 한 책에 기록하고
61 스라야에게 말하기를 너는 바벨론에 이르거든 삼가 이 모든 말씀을 읽고
62 말하기를 여호와여 주께서 이 곳에 대하여 말씀하시기를 이 땅을 멸하여 사람이나 짐승이 거기에 살지 못하게 하고 영원한 폐허가 되리라 하셨나이다 하라 하니라
63 너는 이 책 읽기를 다한 후에 책에 돌을 매어 유브라데강 속에 던지며
64 말하기를 바벨론이 나의 재난 때문에 이같이 몰락하여 다시 일어서지 못하리니 그들이 피폐하리라 하라 하니라 예레미야의 말이 이에 끝나니라
2011년 동일본 대지진은 규모 9.0으로 1900년 이후 발생한 전 세계 지진 가운데 4번째로 큰 지진이었습니다. 지진으로 인해 몰려온 쓰나미는 2만 명이 넘는 사람이 목숨을 앗아갔고, 진앙지에 인접한 후쿠시마 원자력 발전소 폭발로 이어졌습니다.
얼마 전 일본 정부가 파괴된 후쿠시마 원자력 발전소에 있는 방사능 오염수를 앞바다에 폐기한다는 계획을 보도하는 바람에 한국을 비롯한 주변국들의 심각한 항의를 받기도 했습니다.
모든 자연재해가 두려운 것이 사실이지만, 쓰나미 만큼 무서운 재앙은 없는 듯 합니다.
일명 크리스마스의 악몽으로 불리는 2004년 12월 26일 인도양 지진으로 인한 쓰나미는 전세계적으로 28만 명의 사망자를 발생시켰으니 말입니다.
쓰나미와 같은 여호와의 보복 (54-58절)
예레미야는 바벨론을 심판하는 멸망시키는 자를 성난 파도(55절)에 비유합니다.
그냥 평상시의 파도 치는 소리도 만만하지 않지만, 쓰나미처럼 갑자기 크고, 많이, 한꺼번에 몰려오는 파도는 엄청난 굉음을 동반합니다. 바벨론을 멸망시키는 대적들의 진격하는 소리가 마치 몰아치는 쓰나미와 같은 소리를 낼 것입니다. 그것은 곧 파멸의 소리이며, 바벨론 사람들의 살려달라고 부르짖는 소리로 이어질 것(54절)입니다.
본문에 등장하는 여호와 하나님의 이미지는 2가지입니다.
첫 번째로 여호와는 보복의 하나님이시니 반드시 보응하시리로다(56b절) 입니다. 이 이미지는 예레미야 전체에 면밀히 흐르고 있는 여호와 하나님의 이미지입니다. 여호와의 보복은 앞선 6, 11, 24절에서도 이미 말씀하신 바입니다.
이는 여호와의 보복의 때니 그에게 보복하시리라(6절)
이는 여호와께서 보복하시는 것 곧 그의 성전을 위하여 보복하시는 것이라(11절)
너희 눈 앞에서 그들이 시온에서 모든 악을 행한 대로 내가 바벨론과 갈대아 모든 주민에게 갚으리라 여호와의 말씀이니라(24절)
두 번째는 만군의 여호와라 일컫는 왕(57절)의 이미지입니다.
만왕의 왕이신 여호와 앞에 교만을 떠는 것은 자살행위입니다. 바벨론이 여호와의 심판을 받을 수 밖에 없는 또 다른 이유는 그들의 교만과 자만 때문입니다. 자신들의 힘과 능력, 전쟁의 승리에 취해 자만했던 그들은 그 취한 상태로 영원히 잠들어 깨지 못할 것(57절)입니다. 이는 39절에서 이미 지적한 바입니다.
보복의 왕, 용사이신 여호와가 심판을 하시니 그 결과는 바벨론의 성벽이 파괴되고, 높은 문들은 불에 탈 것(58절)입니다. 그 동안 포로로 잡아온 열방의 백성들이 수고하여 세운 성벽과 건축물들이 타버림으로 그들의 수고가 헛될 것입니다.
교만한 자들이 남을 착취하여 쌓은 욕심의 탑들은 쉽게 무너집니다. 모든 인간적인 욕심과 노력이 수포로 돌아갈 것입니다. 인생은 모두 이 세상에서 미래의 집을 짓는 자들입니다. 반드시 마지막 날, 보복의 날에 어떤 터 위에, 무엇으로 지었는지 시험하는 날이 옵니다. 그래서 사도 바울은 다음과 같이 말했습니다.
각각 공력이 나타날 터인데 그 날이 공력을 밝히리니 이는 불로 나타내고
그 불이 각 사람의 공력이 어떠한 것을 시험할 것임이니라 (고전 3:13)
그러므로 예수 그리스도라는 확실한 터 위에 불에 타지 않는 것들, 곧 영적인 것들로 쌓아야 하는 것입니다. 그럴 때 우리의 구원은 보장 되는 것입니다.
소망의 말씀을 붙들라 (59-64절)
예레미야의 말이 여기서 끝나는(64절) 중요한 부분입니다. 때는 다시 시드기야 왕 제 사년입니다.
그러니 B.C.593년입니다. 아마도 예레미야 27장이 비슷한 시기일 것입니다. 바벨론에 대항하기 위해 시드기야 왕을 중심으로 에돔, 모압, 암몬, 두로, 시돈 왕들이 모의를 했지만, 느부갓네살에게 들통이나서 시드기야는 그에게 충성을 맹세하러 바벨론에 가야 했습니다.
그 가는 길에 예레미야는 자신의 개인 서기관 바룩의 동생인 병참감 스라야에게 상징 행위Symbolic Action을 통하여 여호와의 신탁Oracles을 전합니다. 신탁의 수취인은 B.C.597년 잡혀간 동족 유대인 포로들입니다.
신탁은 다음과 같습니다. 바벨론에 닥칠 재난의 말씀을 모두 기록한 책, 두루마리를 모든 유다 포로들 앞에서 읽고, 그대로 이루어질 것을 선포한 후에 돌을 묶어 유브라데스 강에 던지는 것입니다. 이것이 상징하는 바는 선포된 바벨론의 멸망은 반드시 이루어져, 바벨론이 물 속에 빠진 것처럼 몰락한다는 것입니다.
얼마 전에 포로로 잡혀온 유대인들에게는 황당한 말처럼 들렸을 것입니다. 아직 유다 예루살렘이 함락되지도 않은 상태입니다. 그런데 유다의 멸망을 넘어, 바벨론의 멸망이라니? 가도 너무 간 느낌이 들었을 것입니다. 하지만 예레미야의 선포는 사실이 되었습니다.
하나님은 때가 되면, 반드시 진노를 쏟으시는 분입니다. 심판을 하십니다.
하지만 동시에 하나님은 하나님을 구하는 자들에게 소망을 주시는 분입니다. 그리고 믿음이 있는 자들은 바로 그 소망의 말씀을 붙들고 현실을 이겨냅니다. 비록 우리 세대에 이루어지지 않을지라도 믿음과 소망을 잃지 않고 세대에서 세대로 그 믿음과 소망을 전달합니다.
절망과 두려움의 시간 속에서도 회복과 부흥을 꿈꿨던 선지자처럼 우리 역시 어두운 세대 가운데에서 빛의 자녀로서 소망을 가지고 나아가야 합니다. 진노 중에도 긍휼을 베푸시는 하나님을 바라봅시다!
여호와여 내가 주께 대한 소문을 듣고 놀랐나이다 여호와여 주는 주의 일을 이 수년 내에
부흥케 하옵소서 이 수년 내에 나타내시옵소서 진노 중에라도 긍휼을 잊지 마옵소서 (합 3:2)
끝까지 여호와의 소망의 말씀을 붙듭시다!
54 “The sound of a cry comes from Babylon,
the sound of great destruction from the land of the Babylonians.
55 The Lord will destroy Babylon; he will silence her noisy din.
Waves of enemies will rage like great waters; the roar of their voices will resound.
56 A destroyer will come against Babylon;
her warriors will be captured, and their bows will be broken.
For the Lord is a God of retribution; he will repay in full.
57 I will make her officials and wise men drunk,
her governors, officers and warriors as well; they will sleep forever and not awake,”
declares the King, whose name is the Lord Almighty.
58 This is what the Lord Almighty says:
“Babylon’s thick wall will be leveled and her high gates set on fire;
the peoples exhaust themselves for nothing, the nations’ labor is only fuel for the flames.”
59 This is the message Jeremiah the prophet gave to the staff officer Seraiah son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, when he went to Babylon with Zedekiah king of Judah in the fourth year of his reign. 60 Jeremiah had written on a scroll about all the disasters that would come upon Babylon—all that had been recorded concerning Babylon. 61 He said to Seraiah, “When you get to Babylon, see that you read all these words aloud. 62 Then say, ‘Lord, you have said you will destroy this place, so that neither people nor animals will live in it; it will be desolate forever.’ 63 When you finish reading this scroll, tie a stone to it and throw it into the Euphrates. 64 Then say, ‘So will Babylon sink to rise no more because of the disaster I will bring on her. And her people will fall.’”
The words of Jeremiah end here.
The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, with a magnitude of 9.0, was the fourth largest earthquake in the world since 1900. The tsunami brought about by the earthquake killed more than 20,000 people and led to an explosion at the Fukushima nuclear power plant adjacent to the epicenter.
Recently, it was reported that the Japanese government had been planning to dispose of radioactive contaminated water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant in the ocean, and it received serious protests from Korea and other neighboring countries.
It is true that all natural disasters are terrifying, but there seems to be no disaster as terrifying as a tsunami.
The tsunami also known as Christmas Nightmare caused by the earthquake in the Indian Ocean, December 26, 2004, killed 280,000 people worldwide.
God’s Retribution like a Tsunami (verses 54-58)
Jeremiah parallels the destroyer who judges Babylon to a raging wave (verse 55).
It is not just the usual sound of waves, but the waves that suddenly come in loud, large, and collectively like a tsunami are accompanied by a tremendous roar. The sound of advancing enemies to destroy Babylon will sound like a raging tsunami. It is the sound of great destruction and will lead to the cry of the Babylonians for salvation (verse 54).
There are two images of Jehovah God in today’s scripture.
First, the Lord is the God of revenge, and He will surely revenge (verse 56b). This is the image of Jehovah God flowing closely throughout the book of Jeremiah. God's retribution was already proclaimed in verses 6, 11, and 24.
It is time for the Lord’s vengeance; He will repay her what she deserves (verse 6).
The Lord will take vengeance, vengeance for His temple (verse 11).
“Before your eyes I will repay Babylon and all who live in Babylonia for all the wrong they have done in Zion,” declares the Lord (verse 24).
The second is the image of a King, whose name is the Lord Almighty (verse 57).
It is an act of suicide to show pride before God, the King of kings. Another reason Babylon must be judged by God is their pride and self-respect. Those who were proud of their strength and power and the victory of the war, they would fall asleep forever in that state of drunkenness (verse 57). This was already pointed out in verse 39.
The King of revenge, the mighty God, judges and the result is Babylon’s thick wall will be leveled and her high gates set on fire (verse 58). In the meantime, the walls and structures built by the people of the nations who have been taken captive will be burned down, and their labor will be in vain.
The towers of greed built by the proud exploits of others are easily destroyed. All human greed and efforts will be in vain. Life is about building the future houses in this world. On the last day, the day of retribution, there will surely come a day to test what was built on which foundation. So the apostle Paul said:
Their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light.
It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.
(1 Corinthians 3:13)
Therefore, we must build with spiritual things which do not burn on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ. In this way, our salvation is guaranteed.
Hold on to the words of hope (verses 59-64)
This is the important part where Jeremiah's words end here (verse 64). The time is again the fourth year of King Zedekiah. So it is 593BC. Perhaps Jeremiah 27 was at a similar time frame. To fight against Babylon, the kings of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tire, and Sidon conspired with the king of Zedekiah. After being caught by Nebuchadnezzar, Zedekiah had to go to Babylon to pledge allegiance to him. On his way, Jeremiah conveys God's Oracle through Symbolic Action to staff officer Seraiah, the brother of his personal scribe, Baruch. The beneficiaries of the message are Jewish prisoners of their own people who were captured in 597BC.
The Divine Oracle is to: read the book, written on a scroll, in front of all the captives of Judah, and then tie a stone and throw it into the Euphrates river after proclaiming that it will happen. What this symbolizes is that the proclaimed destruction of Babylon will surely come, and Babylon will fall as if it were drowned.
It must have sounded absurd to the Jews who had been taken captive.
Because Jerusalem of Judah has not yet been captured. But beyond the destruction of Judah, the destruction of Babylon? They must have felt too far gone. However, Jeremiah's proclamation became true.
God is the One who pours out wrath when the time comes. He surely judges.
But at the same time, God is the One who gives hope to those who seek Him. And those who have faith hold onto the very word of hope and overcome reality. Even if it (coming of Jesus) does not happen in our lifetime, we pass on that faith and hope from generation to generation without losing faith and hope.
Like the prophet who dreamed of recovery and revival even in times of despair and fear, we too must move forward with hope as children of light in this dark generation. Let us look to God who shows mercy even in wrath!
Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord.
Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.
(Habakkuk 3:2)
Let us hold on to the word of God's hope to the end!
