1 애굽 땅에 사는 모든 유다 사람 곧 믹돌과 다바네스와 놉과 바드로스 지방에 사는 자에 대하여 말씀이 예레미야에게 임하니라 이르시되

8 어찌하여 너희가 너희 손이 만든 것으로 나의 노여움을 일으켜 너희가 가서 머물러 사는 애굽 땅에서 다른 신들에게 분향함으로 끊어 버림을 당하여 세계 여러 나라 가운데에서 저주와 수치거리가 되고자 하느냐
9 너희가 유다 땅과 예루살렘 거리에서 행한 너희 조상들의 악행과 유다 왕들의 악행과 왕비들의 악행과 너희의 악행과 너희 아내들의 악행을 잊었느냐
10 그들이 오늘까지 겸손하지 아니하며 두려워하지도 아니하고 내가 너희와 너희 조상들 앞에 세운 나의 율법과 나의 법규를 지켜 행하지 아니하느니라
개가 그 토한 것을 도로 먹는 것 같이 미련한 자는 그 미련한 것을 거듭 행하느니라

학창 시절 성경을 읽을 때 참 인상 깊었던 말씀이었습니다. 성경에 이렇게 지저분하게 묘사한 말씀이 있네 하는 생각과 진짜 개가 그 토한 것을 먹나? 라는 의문 때문이었습니다. 그런데 하루는 이 의문이 풀리는 사건이 있었습니다.
당시 우리 집에 키우던 샬롬이 라는 강아지가 한 마리 있었는데, 하얀색 시고르 자브 종 이었습니다. 시고르 자브 종을 처음 듣는 분도 있을 것입니다. 저도 요즘 인터넷에서 처음으로 그 이름을 접하고는 내가 모르는 이런 개 종류도 있었나? 하고 검색해보려고 했으니까요.
그런데 계속 읽다보니… 음… 시골잡종의 고상한 표현이더군요. 한마디로 믹스견이죠. 여하튼 굉장히 귀여운 녀석이었는데, 어느 날 보니까 너무 급히 밥을 먹었는지 토를 했습니다. 그런데 잠시 후에…
더 이상 자세하게 묘사하지 못함을 이해해 주시기 바랍니다. 하나님의 말씀은 진리였습니다!
동물의 세계를 통해서도 하나님은 우리 인간에게 교훈을 주십니다. 개가 그 토한 것을 먹는 모습을 보면 역겹습니다. 하나님께서도 우리 인생이 동일한 죄악을 범하고 돌이키고, 다시 범죄하는 모습을 볼 때 그러한 감정이 드실 것이라 생각합니다. 오늘 본문이 바로 이러한 어리석은 인생의 모습을 보여줍니다.
진노하심의 이유 (1-6절)
예레미야 44장은 그의 마지막 설교입니다. 아직 마지막 장인 52장까지는 꽤 남았지만, 시간적인 순서로 볼 때는 44장이 가장 마지막 사건인 것입니다. 바룩에 대한 예언 45장과 이방민족의 심판에 대한 예언 기록인 46-50장은 여호야김 4년, 곧 B.C.605년에 임한 말씀입니다. 그리고 바벨론 멸망 예언인 51장 역시 시드기야 4년, 곧 B.C.593년에 임한 말씀입니다.
그러므로 본문의 설교는 매우 중요한 예레미야의 마지막 애끓는 설교라 할 수 있습니다. 애굽 국경지역과 수도에 해당하는 지역에 사는 모든 유대인들을 향한 하나님의 신탁의 말씀이 선지자에게 임합니다.
믹돌Migdol은 망대, 요새라는 의미로 시내반도 오른쪽 맨 위, 수에즈 운하의 북쪽에 위치한 국경 도시입니다. 다바네스Tahpanhes는 누비안의 성전이라는 의미로 믹돌보다 약 25mile(40km) 남서쪽, 아래 이집트의 삼각주 동쪽에 위치하고 있는 군사, 상업적 요충지입니다.
놉Noph은 고대 이집트의 수도였던 멤피스Memphis를 말합니다.
또한 바드로스Patarsy는 나일강 상류지방 Upper Egypt을 말합니다.
아마도 유대인들은 애굽 전역으로 흩어져 살았던 것으로 보입니다. 그들에게 선지자는 예루살렘 성전이 파괴되고, 유다가 멸망하여 모든 사람이 떠나버린 황무지가 된 이유에 대해서 신학적인 해석을 해 줍니다.
그 이유는 우상숭배입니다. 조상들이나 예레미야 당시 유대인들이나 알지도 못하는 다른 신들에게 나아가 분향하고 섬기는 악행을 하여 하나님의 노여움을 일으킨 것(3절)입니다. 하나님은 선지자들을 끊임없이 보내어 하나님이 미워하는 가증한 일을 행하지 말라(4절)고 하셨지만, 그들은 듣지 아니하며 귀를 기울이지 아니하고 다른 신들에게 여전히 분향하여 그들의 악에서 돌이키지 않았습니다(5절).
그러므로 하나님의 분노와 노여움의 불길이 유다 성읍과 예루살렘에 쏟아지고, 그곳은 폐허와 황무지가 된 것(6절)입니다.
개가 그 토한 것을 도로 먹는 것 같이 (7-10절)
7절은 한글성경에 번역이 안 된 히브리어 ועתה (웨아타)로 시작됩니다. 그 의미는 그리고 이제 라는 접속사입니다. 구약에서 자주 쓰이는 단어로 어떤 결론을 이끌어 낼 때 사용합니다. 그러니 7-10절은 오늘 본문에 등장하는 선지자의 메시지의 소결론에 해당하는 부분이라 할 수 있습니다.
선지자는 안타까운 심정으로 하나님의 마음을 전합니다. 오늘까지 벌어진 모든 사건이 바로 우상숭배 때문인데, 애굽까지 피난 온 유대인들은 그곳에서도 정신차리지 못하고 여전히 우상숭배를 하고 있었던 것입니다. 이는 마치 개가 그 토한 것을 다시 먹는 것처럼 어리석은 행동입니다.
그러한 어리석은 행동의 결과는 자기의 영혼을 해하는 것이며, 남녀노소 모두 멸절하여 남는 자가 없게 될 것(7절)이고, 하나님 앞에서 끊어버림을 당하여 열방의 저주와 수치거리가 될 것(8절)입니다.
선지자는 과거부터 지금까지 해왔던 죄악을 잊었냐고 묻습니다. 과거부터의 죄악이 여전히 지금까지 겸손함도 없이 두려워함도 없이 자행되어 옵니다. 그 죄는 결국 하나님의 율법과 법규를 지키지 않는 것입니다.
여기서 눈 여겨 볼 것은 9절에서 유다 왕들의 악행과 왕비들의 악행과 너의 악행과 너희 아내들의 악행 이라는 표현입니다. 특별히 왕비와 아내들이 강조된 것은 우상을 숭배하는 것에 여성들이 주된 역할을 해 왔음을 암시하고 있습니다. 내일 본문에서 더 자세하게 살펴 보겠습니다. 가정과 사회에 끼치는 여성의 영향력은 매우 지대합니다. 아담과 하와만 보아도 절대로 부정할 수 없습니다. 크리스천 여성들이 깨어 지혜와 신앙으로 무장하는 것이 어느 때보다 더 중요한 시대입니다. 여성들이여 명심하십시오!
사람이 한 두 번 실수할 수 있습니다. 하지만 계속 동일한 죄를 반복하는 것은 문제가 있는 것입니다.
중독에 의한 것이든, 영적인 것이든 치유가 필요한 것입니다. 중대한 결단과 훈련을 통해서 반드시 이겨내야 합니다.
하지만 인간이라는 자체가 죄에 중독된 존재입니다. 어리석은 개처럼 그 토한 것을 계속 탐하는 존재라는 것입니다. 그런 인간이 치유 받을 수 있는 유일한 방법은 이 땅에 환자를 찾으러 오신 의원, 예수께 나가는 방법 밖에는 없습니다. 다행히도 예수님은 이렇게 말씀 하셨습니다.
예수께서 들으시고 이르시되 건강한 자에게는 의사가 쓸 데 없고 병든 자에게라야 쓸 데 있느니라
너희는 가서 내가 긍휼을 원하고 제사를 원하지 아니하노라 하신 뜻이 무엇인지 배우라
나는 의인을 부르러 온 것이 아니요 죄인을 부르러 왔노라 하시니라 (마 9:12-13)
죄를 내가 해결하려 할 필요가 없습니다. 문제 있음을 인식하고 인정하고 예수께만 나가면 됩니다.
죄인임을 고백하는 것입니다. 용서해달고 구하는 것입니다. 그저 불쌍히 여겨달라고 외치는 것입니다.
예수 안에 거하는 것이 최고의 말씀 순종입니다. 율법을 지키는 것입니다.
그러한 자는 치유, 곧 구원을 얻습니다. 영원한 죄로부터의 자유입니다.
진심으로 그 날을 사모합니다!
1 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Judeans who lived in the land of Egypt, at Migdol, at Tahpanhes, at Memphis, and in the land of Pathros, 2 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You have seen all the disaster that I brought upon Jerusalem and upon all the cities of Judah. Behold, this day they are a desolation, and no one dwells in them, 3 because of the evil that they committed, provoking me to anger, in that they went to make offerings and serve other gods that they knew not, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers. 4 Yet I persistently sent to you all my servants the prophets, saying, ‘Oh, do not do this abomination that I hate!’ 5 But they did not listen or incline their ear, to turn from their evil and make no offerings to other gods. 6 Therefore my wrath and my anger were poured out and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, and they became a waste and a desolation, as at this day. 7 And now thus says the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel: Why do you commit this great evil against yourselves, to cut off from you man and woman, infant and child, from the midst of Judah, leaving you no remnant? 8 Why do you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, making offerings to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have come to live, so that you may be cut off and become a curse and a taunt among all the nations of the earth? 9 Have you forgotten the evil of your fathers, the evil of the kings of Judah, the evil of their wives, your own evil, and the evil of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 10 They have not humbled themselves even to this day, nor have they feared, nor walked in my law and my statutes that I set before you and before your fathers.
As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly.
(Proverbs 26:11)
When I was in school and as I was reading the Bible, I was very impressed by this particular verse. First it was surprising to find such a "messy" expression in the Bible, and because of the question “do the real dogs really eat their vomit?” And one day, there was an incident where this question was resolved.
At that time, we had a puppy called Shalom in our house, and it was a white “sigor-jab-jong” species. Many of you probably never heard of such a breed. When I first saw this unique species name on the internet, I thought “is this a new breed?”. But then after carefully observing the name...huh...it was a noble expression of just an ordinary rural (country) hybrid...anyhow he was a very cute puppy. One day, perhaps after eating the food too fast, it vomited. And after a while…please understand that I would rather not describe in detail. God’s Word was true!
Even through the animal world, God gives lessons to the humans. It is disgusting to see the dog eating its own vomit. I think God will feel the same way when He sees us committing the same sins, turn around from them, and yet sin all over again.
Today’s scripture shows us this foolish way of life.
The Reason for Wrath (verses 1-6)
Jeremiah Chapter 44 is the last sermon of Jeremiah. There is still quite a bit left until the last chapter, Chapter 52, but in chronological order, Chapter 44 is the last event. Chapter 45 is the prophecy against Baruch, and chapters 46-50, which are the prophecy records of the judgment of the Gentile nations, came from the fourth year of Jehoiakim, or 605BC. And the prophecy of Babylon's destruction, chapter 51, also came in the fourth year of Zedekiah, or 593BC.
Therefore, the sermon in today’s scripture can be regarded as Jeremiah's vey important and last fervent sermon. The word of God came to the prophet and to all the Jews living in the region of Egyptian border and capital city.
Migdol means a tower or fortress and is a border city located at the top right of the downtown peninsula and north of the Suez Canal.
Tahpanhes, meaning the temple of Nubian, is a military and commercial hub located about 25 miles (40km) southwest of Migdol and east of Lower Egypt Delta.
Noph refers to Memphis, the capital of ancient Egypt.
In addition, Pathros refers to Upper Egypt in the upper Nile River.
Apparently the people of Judah lived scattered throughout Egypt.
To them, the prophet gives a theological interpretation of why the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, the fall of Judah, and became a wasteland where everyone left.
The reason is idolatry. “Because…they aroused my anger by burning incense to and worshiping other gods that neither they nor you nor your ancestors ever knew” (verse 3). Again and again God sent His servants the prophets, who said, “Do not do this detestable thing that I hate!” (verse 4). “But they did not listen or pay attention; they did not turn from their wickedness or stop burning incense to other gods” (verse 5).
Therefore, God’s fierce anger was poured out; “it raged against the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem and made them the desolate ruins they are today” (verse 6).
As a Dog Returns to its Vomit (verse 7-10)
Verse 7 begins with a Hebrew word ועתה (attah) which was omitted in the Korean translation. Attah is a conjunction meaning “and now”. This word was frequently used in the Old Testament when drawing conclusions. Therefore, verses 7-10 is the results of
the prophet's message in today's scripture.
The prophet conveys the heart of God with regret. All the events that took place to this day are because of idolatry, but the Jews who had fled to Egypt still practiced idolatry regardless. This is as foolish as a dog eats its vomit again.
And the results are “cutting off from Judah the men and women, the children and infants, and so leave yourselves without a remnant” (verse 7) and “make yourselves a curse and an object of reproach among all the nations on earth” (verse 8).
The prophet asks “Have you forgotten the wickedness committed by your ancestors?”
To this day, Judah have not humbled themselves or shown reverence.
The sin they committed was disobeying the law and the decrees of God.
Here, in verse 9, we should pay attention to "the wickedness committed by the kings and queens of Judah and the wickedness committed by you and your wives”.
The particular emphasis on queens and wives indicates that women have played a major role in idolatry. We will discuss the details of this in tomorrow’s scripture.
Women's influence on home and society is great. It cannot be denied by just looking at Adam and Eve. It is more important than ever for Christian women to wake up and arm themselves with wisdom and faith. Remember this, ladies!
A person can make a mistake once or twice. However, there is a problem with repeating the same sin over and over again. Whether it is due to addiction or of spiritual, healing is needed. It must be overcome through serious determination and training.
However, human beings are themselves addicted to sin. Like a foolish dog, we continue to covet the vomit. The only way such humans can be healed is by going to Jesus, a doctor who came to seek the patient on this earth. Fortunately, Jesus said:
On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
But go and learn what this means:
‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
(Matthew 9:12-13)
We do not have to try to solve our sin. All we have to do is to recognize and admit that there is a problem and simply go to Jesus. Confessing that we are sinners. Asking for forgiveness. And shout, “have mercy on us”.
Abiding in Jesus is the greatest obedience to the Word. To live according to the Law.
Such a person will be healed, and saved. It is freedom from eternal sin.
I sincerely yearn for that day!
