10 이방들이여 너희는 여호와의 말씀을 듣고 먼 섬에 전파하여 이르기를 이스라엘을 흩으신 자가 그를 모으시고 목자가 그 양 떼에게 행함 같이 그를 지키시리로다

16 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 네 울음 소리와 네 눈물을 멈추어라 네 일에 삯을 받을 것인즉 그들이 그의 대적의 땅에서 돌아오리라 여호와의 말씀이니라
17 너의 장래에 소망이 있을 것이라 너의 자녀가 자기들의 지경으로 돌아오리라 여호와의 말씀이니라
18 에브라임이 스스로 탄식함을 내가 분명히 들었노니 주께서 나를 징벌하시매 멍에에 익숙하지 못한 송아지 같은 내가 징벌을 받았나이다 주는 나의 하나님 여호와이시니 나를 이끌어 돌이키소서 그리하시면 내가 돌아오겠나이다
19 내가 돌이킨 후에 뉘우쳤고 내가 교훈을 받은 후에 내 볼기를 쳤사오니 이는 어렸을 때의 치욕을 지므로 부끄럽고 욕됨이니이다 하도다
20 에브라임은 나의 사랑하는 아들 기뻐하는 자식이 아니냐 내가 그를 책망하여 말할 때마다 깊이 생각하노라 그러므로 그를 위하여 내 창자가 들끓으니 내가 반드시 그를 불쌍히 여기리라 여호와의 말씀이니라
21 처녀 이스라엘아 너의 이정표를 세우며 너의 푯말을 만들고 큰 길 곧 네가 전에 가던 길을 마음에 두라 돌아오라 네 성읍들로 돌아오라
22 반역한 딸아 네가 어느 때까지 방황하겠느냐 여호와가 새 일을 세상에 창조하였나니 곧 여자가 남자를 둘러 싸리라
크리스천이 여러 면에서 잘 살아야 할 이유는 분명합니다. 여러 면에서 잘 산다는 것은 전인격적인 삶과 모든 생활을 한마디로 함축한 표현입니다. 신앙, 인격, 건강, 사회적 지위, 생활 수준 등등 말 그대로 전반적으로 잘 사는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 크리스천 자녀가 좋은 대학에 가고, 사업이 잘 되고, 건강하면 하나님을 믿지 않는 자연인들에게 더욱 도전을 줄 수 있기 때문입니다.
하지만 이것들보다 중요한 것은 인격과 사람의 됨됨이 입니다. 비록 우리가 힘들고 어려운 상황에 있어도 (즉 자연인들이 부러워할 세속적 조건을 가지지 못했을지라도) 우리의 인격과 삶을 대하는 태도만으로도 얼마든지 자연인들을 하나님께로 인도할 수 있습니다. 보디발 장군의 노예였던 요셉처럼 말입니다.
이방인들이 부러워할 복 (10-14절)
10-11절 이방인(열방)과 섬은 이사야서 후반부에 자주 등장하는 단어와 어구입니다.
또한 구원하다(파다)는 이사야서 후반부에 등장하는 대표적인 단어이고, 속량하다(고엘) 역시 이스라엘에서 자주 쓰이는 단어입니다. 고엘은 도와줄 의무가 있는 가까운 형제나 친척이 어려워진 그 사람을 대신하여 값을 치르는 제도입니다. 하나님께서 이스라엘을 위하여 대신 값을 치르고 강한 자의 손에서 구원하실 것입니다. 이방인들은 이스라엘을 향한 조롱이 아닌 부러움을 보낼 것입니다. 이방인들이 부러워할 이스라엘이 받는 여호와의 복은 무엇인가요?
첫 번째로 삶의 풍성함(12절)입니다. 세속적인 자연인들은 그저 돈 잘 벌고 건강하면 최고라고 생각할 것입니다. 또한 실제로 아무리 거룩한 사람이라도 기본적인 의식주는 필요합니다. 하나님은 이스라엘의 필요를 채우시되, 풍성하게 채우실 것을 약속하십니다.
두 번째는 심령의 기쁨(12b절)입니다. 이것은 풍성한 의식주로 인한 것이 아닙니다. 예레미야는 그 심령이 물 댄 동산 같겠고 라고 노래합니다. 끊이지 않는 기쁨이 넘칠 것에 대한 묘사입니다. 기독교인의 특징은 기쁨입니다. 어떤 상황에서도 빼앗기지 않고 흔들리지 않는 기쁨이야말로 가장 큰 축복입니다.
이 기쁨은 남녀노소를 가리지 않습니다(13절). 슬픔이 변하여 춤이 되게 하실 것입니다.
세 번째로 영의 만족(14절)입니다. 예루살렘 성전을 떠난 포로시기 동안에는 제사장이 사역을 하고 싶어도 할 수가 없었습니다. 그래서 생겨난 제도가 회당제도 입니다. 기름으로 제사장들의 마음을 흡족하게 하며 예배, 제사가 없으므로 제사장들은 제물을 드리고 배당되는 자신의 몫을 받을 수도 없었습니다. 예배의 회복은 곧 제사장직의 회복입니다. 오늘날 제대로 된 예배의 회복은 모든 성도들이 자신의 영적인 제사장직을 회복하는 것입니다. 예배가 회복되는 것이 근본적이고 최종적인 축복입니다.
데이빗 플랫David Platt 목사는 자신의 책 래디컬Radical에서 수도를 틀면 물이 나오고, 운전할 차가 있고, 따뜻한 집이 있다면 이미 전세계 상위 15%의 부자라고 말합니다. 그렇다면 미주 한인 사회에 거주하는 대부분의 한인들은 전세계 상위15%의 부자라고 볼 수 있습니다. 삶의 풍성함, 마음의 기쁨, 그리고 자유로운 예배! 이미 우리는 본문에 나온 여호와의 복을 받은 자들입니다.
라헬, 에브라임, 처녀 이스라엘 (15-22절)
예레미야는 3명의 인물을 은유적으로 사용하여 이스라엘의 회복을 노래합니다.
자식 없는 자의 대명사인 라헬(15-17절) 북이스라엘은 이미 앗수르에 의해 B.C.722에 멸망했습니다. 에브라임의 직계 할머니인 라헬을 통하여 북이스라엘의 슬픔을 자식 잃은 여인의 빗대어 묘사하고 있습니다. 라마는 라헬의 무덤이 있는 곳이며, 포로들이 잡혀가는 길에 거쳐가는 곳입니다.
하지만 하나님은 이제 자식을 잃은 여인의 눈물을 닦아주실 것입니다. 라헬의 자녀 북이스라엘이 자신들의 땅으로 돌아올 것입니다. 장래의 소망을 노래합니다.
에브라임의 탄식(18-20절) 에브라임(북이스라엘)은 이제 스스로 탄식합니다. 자신의 과거의 죄를 뉘우칩니다. 교만하고 멋대로이며 하나님의 말씀에 순종하지 않았던 과거를 멍에에 익숙하지 않은 송아지에 비유합니다. 징벌은 당연한 것입니다. 18b-19절은 구구절절 자신의 죄를 눈물로 회개하는 에브라임의 모습을 묘사합니다. 진정한 회복은 진정한 눈물의 회개 후에 따라오는 것입니다.
존 칼빈John Calvin은 본 구절을 하나님이 심판을 통해 공의를 깨닫게 하신 다음에야 비로소 위로를 베푸신다는 진리를 보여준다 고 해석합니다.
사랑하는 자식을 책망하는 것을 즐거워하는 부모는 세상에 없습니다. 어쩔 수 없이 징벌을 하지만 그 순간에도 저 녀석이 얼마나 아플까? 마음이 상하지는 않을까? 하는 수많은 생각이 납니다. 자녀를 향한 부모의 마음은 늘 긍휼입니다. 하나님은 당신의 마음을 그를 위하여 내 창자가 들끓으니 라고 표현합니다!
애끓는 아버지의 마음을 알 수 있는 표현입니다. 그러므로 하나님은 반드시 이스라엘을 불쌍히 여기시어 돌아오게 하실 것입니다.
처녀 이스라엘(21-22절)은 우상숭배와 죄로 거룩한 아버지의 명예를 더럽힌 반역한 딸(22a절)입니다.
하지만 아버지 하나님은 다시 돌아갈 길을 생각하여 포로로 잡혀가는 길에 이정표와 푯말을 세우라고 말씀하십니다. 돌아오라! 고 애타게 외치십니다. 그들이 자신의 성읍으로 돌아 올 수 있는 유일한 길은 여호와께로 돌아가는 것입니다. 또한 여호와께로 돌아가는 유일한 길은 에브라임처럼 눈물로 회개하고 돌이키는 것입니다. 이것이 예루살렘으로 돌아가는 이정표입니다.
곧 여자가 남자를 둘러싸리라(22b절) 에 대한 해석은 아주 다양하고, 정확하지 않습니다. 매우 해석하기 어려운 구절입니다. 다만 하나님께서 놀랍고 새로운 역사를 행하실 것이라는 메시지로 이해할 수 있습니다.
공의의 하나님은 자녀일지라도 죄를 행할 경우에는 반드시 징벌하십니다. 때론 그 순간이 고통스럽고 괴롭지만 징벌에서 회복할 수 있는 유일한 길은 회개하고 애끓는 심정으로 기다리시는 아버지께로 돌아가는 것입니다. 이것이 생명의 길의 이정표입니다.
지금도 하나님은 당신의 자녀들에게 돌아오라고 외치십니다.
우리를 향한 하나님의 생각은 평안이고 축복입니다. 장래의 소망을 주려는 것입니다.
길을 잃을 때마다 이정표(말씀)를 보고 아버지 하나님께로 날마다 돌아갑시다.
10 “Hear the word of the Lord, you nations;
proclaim it in distant coastlands:
‘He who scattered Israel will gather them
and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’
11 For the Lord will deliver Jacob
and redeem them from the hand of those stronger than they.
12 They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion;
they will rejoice in the bounty of the Lord—
the grain, the new wine and the olive oil,
the young of the flocks and herds.
They will be like a well-watered garden,
and they will sorrow no more.
13 Then young women will dance and be glad,
young men and old as well.
I will turn their mourning into gladness;
I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.
14 I will satisfy the priests with abundance,
and my people will be filled with my bounty,”
declares the Lord.
15 This is what the Lord says:
“A voice is heard in Ramah,
mourning and great weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”
16 This is what the Lord says:
“Restrain your voice from weeping
and your eyes from tears,
for your work will be rewarded,”
declares the Lord.
“They will return from the land of the enemy.
17 So there is hope for your descendants,”
declares the Lord.
“Your children will return to their own land.
18 “I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning:
‘You disciplined me like an unruly calf,
and I have been disciplined.
Restore me, and I will return,
because you are the Lord my God.
19 After I strayed,
I repented;
after I came to understand,
I beat my breast.
I was ashamed and humiliated
because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’
20 Is not Ephraim my dear son,
the child in whom I delight?
Though I often speak against him,
I still remember him.
Therefore my heart yearns for him;
I have great compassion for him,”
declares the Lord.
21 “Set up road signs;
put up guideposts.
Take note of the highway,
the road that you take.
Return, Virgin Israel,
return to your towns.
22 How long will you wander,
unfaithful Daughter Israel?
The Lord will create a new thing on earth—
the woman will return to the man.”
It is clear why Christians should live well in many ways. Living well in many ways is an expression that implies a whole person and all of his life in one word. Faith, character, health, social status, standard of living, etc. It is literally living well overall. Because if Christian children go to good college, do business well, and are healthy, it can challenge to natural people who do not believe in God.
However, what is more important than these is character and personality. Even when we are in hard and difficult situations (that is, even if we did not have the worldly conditions that non-believers would envy), our personality and attitude toward life can lead non-believers to God. Like Joseph, the slave of General Potiphar.
The blessings the Gentiles will envy (verses 10-14)
Verses 10-11 Gentiles (nations) and distant coastlands are words and phrases that frequently appear in the latter half of the book of Isaiah.
Also, to ransom (pada) is a representative word that appears in the latter half of the book of Isaiah, and to redeem (Goel) is also a frequently used word in Israel. Goel is a system in which brothers or close relatives who are obligated to help pay the price on behalf of the person in need. God will pay the price for Israel and save it from the hands of the strong. The Gentiles will envy Israel, not ridicule. What is Jehovah's blessing for Israel that the Gentiles will envy?
First is the richness of life (verse 12). The secular non-believers would think that it is best if they just make good money and are healthy. Of course, even the most holy people need basic food, clothing and shelter. God promises to satisfy the needs of Israel abundantly.
Second is the joy of the soul (verse 12b). This is not due to abundant food, clothing and shelter. Jeremiah sings their soul will be like "a well-watered garden." It is a description of that constant joy will overflow. A characteristic of Christians is joy. The greatest blessing is the joy that is not taken away or shaken under any circumstances.
This joy is for every age and sex (verse 13). Sorrow will change and become a dance.
Third is the satisfaction of the spirit (verse 14). During the captivity period which left the temple in Jerusalem, the priest wanted to minister, but he could not. That was why the synagogue system was created. “Satisfy the heart of priests with the oil.” Since there is no worship or sacrifice, the priests could not offer their offerings and receive their share of distribution. The restoration of worship is the restoration of the priesthood. The restoration of proper worship today is the restoration of all believers to their own spiritual priesthood. The restoration of worship is a fundamental and final blessing.
Rev. David Platt says in his book Radical, that if you have the water to turn on, a car to drive, and a warm home, you are already in the top 15% of the world's richest people. In that case, most Korean Americans living in America belong to the richest in the world's top 15%. The rich of life, the joy of the heart, and free worship! We are already blessed ones by Jehovah in today’s scripture.
Rachel, Ephraim, virgin Israel (verses 15-22)
Jeremiah uses three figures metaphorically to sing about the restoration of Israel.
Rachel (verses 15-17), a pronoun for the childless, North Israel was already destroyed by Assyria in B.C.722. Ephraim's immediate grandmother, Rachel, depicts the sadness of Northern Israel as a woman who lost her child. Rama is the place where Rachel's tomb is located, and it is the place where the captives go on their way.
But now God will wipe the tears of the woman who has lost her child. Rachel's child, Northern Israel will return to their land. Sing the hope of the future.
Ephraim's Moaning (verses 18-20) Ephraim (North Israel) now moans on its own. They repent of their past sins. The past arrogant, being on his own, and not obeying God's words metaphor to an unruly calf with a yoke. Punishment is rightful. Verses 18b-19 describe Ephraim's repentance of his sins with tears. Real recovery comes after real tearful repentance.
John Calvin interprets this verse as showing the truth that God will give comfort only after He has made justice through judgment.
There are no parents in the world who enjoy reproaching their loved child. No choice but to punish, but even at that moment, how painful is the child? Wouldn't it be offended? A lot of thoughts. Parents' hearts for their children are always compassionate. God describes His heart as my heart yearns for him!
It is an expression of the heart of an afflicted father. Therefore, God will surely pity Israel and bring it back.
Virgin Israel (vs. 21-22) is unfaithful daughter (vs. 22a) who dishonored the holy father with idolatry and sin.
However, God the Father set up road signs and guideposts on the way they were taken captive to think about their way back. Return! Shouts anxiously.
The only way they can return to their city is to return to Jehovah. Also, the only way back to Jehovah, like Ephraim, is to repent and turn back with tears. This is the road signs back to Jerusalem.
The interpretation of “a woman will surround a man (verse 22b)” is very diverse and not precise. This is a very difficult phrase to interpret. However, it can be understood as a message that God will do an amazing new work.
The God of justice surely punishes even His own children if they sin. Sometimes the moment is painful and distressing, but the only way to recover from punishment is to repent and return to the afflicted Father who waits in agony. This is the road signs on the path of life.
Even now, God is calling out to His children to return.
God's thoughts for us are peace and blessing. To give hope for the future.
Whenever get lost, let's look at the road signs (words) and return to God the Father every day.
