1 선지자 예레미야가 예루살렘에서 이같은 편지를 느부갓네살이 예루살렘에서 바벨론으로 끌고 간 포로 중 남아 있는 장로들과 제사장들과 선지자들과 모든 백성에게 보냈는데
2 그 때는 여고니야 왕과 왕후와 궁중 내시들과 유다와 예루살렘의 고관들과 기능공과 토공들이 예루살렘에서 떠난 후라
3 유다의 왕 시드기야가 바벨론으로 보내어 바벨론의 왕 느부갓네살에게로 가게 한 사반의 아들 엘라사와 힐기야의 아들 그마랴 편으로 말하되
4 만군의 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님께서 예루살렘에서 바벨론으로 사로잡혀 가게 한 모든 포로에게 이와 같이 말씀하시니라
5 너희는 집을 짓고 거기에 살며 텃밭을 만들고 그 열매를 먹으라
6 아내를 맞이하여 자녀를 낳으며 너희 아들이 아내를 맞이하며 너희 딸이 남편을 맞아 그들로 자녀를 낳게 하여 너희가 거기에서 번성하고 줄어들지 아니하게 하라
7 너희는 내가 사로잡혀 가게 한 그 성읍의 평안을 구하고 그를 위하여 여호와께 기도하라 이는 그 성읍이 평안함으로 너희도 평안할 것임이라
8 만군의 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님께서 이와 같이 말하노라 너희 중에 있는 선지자들에게와 점쟁이에게 미혹되지 말며 너희가 꾼 꿈도 곧이 듣고 믿지 말라
9 내가 그들을 보내지 아니하였어도 그들이 내 이름으로 거짓을 예언함이라 여호와의 말씀이니라
10 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 바벨론에서 칠십 년이 차면 내가 너희를 돌보고 나의 선한 말을 너희에게 성취하여 너희를 이 곳으로 돌아오게 하리라
11 여호와의 말씀이니라 너희를 향한 나의 생각을 내가 아나니 평안이요 재앙이 아니니라 너희에게 미래와 희망을 주는 것이니라
12 너희가 내게 부르짖으며 내게 와서 기도하면 내가 너희들의 기도를 들을 것이요
13 너희가 온 마음으로 나를 구하면 나를 찾을 것이요 나를 만나리라
14 이것은 여호와의 말씀이니라 나는 너희들을 만날 것이며 너희를 포로된 중에서 다시 돌아오게 하되 내가 쫓아 보내었던 나라들과 모든 곳에서 모아 사로잡혀 떠났던 그 곳으로 돌아오게 하리라 이것은 여호와의 말씀이니라
15 너희가 말하기를 여호와께서 우리를 위하여 바벨론에서 선지자를 일으키셨느니라
16 다윗의 왕좌에 앉은 왕과 이 성에 사는 모든 백성 곧 너희와 함께 포로 되어 가지 아니한 너희 형제에게 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하셨느니라
17 만군의 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 보라 내가 칼과 기근과 전염병을 그들에게 보내어 그들에게 상하여 먹을 수 없는 몹쓸 무화과 같게 하겠고
18 내가 칼과 기근과 전염병으로 그들을 뒤따르게 하며 그들을 세계 여러 나라 가운데에 흩어 학대를 당하게 할 것이며 내가 그들을 쫓아낸 나라들 가운데에서 저주와 경악과 조소와 수모의 대상이 되게 하리라
19 여호와의 말씀이니라 너희들이 내 말을 듣지 않았기 때문이니라 내가 내 종 선지자들을 너희들에게 꾸준히 보냈으나 너희는 그들의 말을 듣지 않았느니라 여호와의 말씀이니라
예레미야서 29장은 몇 개의 편지로 이루어져 있습니다.
예미야가 바벨론 포로로 잡혀간 동포들에게 보내는 2개의 편지(4-14; 20-23절)와 스마야가 예루살렘에 보낸 편지(26-28절), 이에 답장하는 예레미야의 편지(31-32절)입니다.
시대상황 (1-3절)
발신자는 예루살렘에 남아 있는 예레미야, 수신자는 바벨론에 끌려가 살아 남은 모든 백성들입니다.
그 때는(2절) 여호야김의 아들 여고니야(여호야긴)와 많은 궁중 사람들이 잡혀가고, 시드기야가 왕이 되어 바벨론에 충성르 맹세해야 하는 상황이었습니다. B.C.597년 바벨론의 2차 침공 이후 입니다.
바벨론에 조공을 바쳐야 하는 유다 시드기야 왕은 사반의 아들 엘라사와 힐기야의 아들 그마랴를 사신으로 보냅니다. 학자들의 주장이 맞다면 엘라사는 예레미야를 도와준 아히감과 형제이고, 그마랴는 요시야 왕 시대 대제사장인 힐기야의 아들입니다.
이들은 몇 안 되는 예레미야의 친구로 그의 메시지에 감명을 받은 것으로 보입니다.
그래서 예레미야는 그들 편에 동포들에게 전하고자 하는 메시지를 담은 편지를 보냅니다.
해외동포에게 고하는 메시지 (4-14절)
이 메시지는 바벨론에 포로로 잡혀간 모든 백성이 들어야 할 메시지입니다. 3가지로 살펴 보겠습니다.
첫 번째로 일상을 유지하라 (5-7절)
집을 짓고 텃밭을 만들어 그 열매를 먹고 아내를 맞이하여 자녀를 낳고, 자녀들 역시 결혼하여 자녀를 낳아 거기에서 번성하고 줄어들지 아니하게 하라(5-6절) 고 말합니다. 당시 거짓 선지자들은 2년이면 바벨론이 멸망하고 잡혀왔던 포로들은 예루살렘으로 돌아갈 것이라는 거짓 메시지로 헛된 소망을 주어 잡혀온 자들이 바벨론에 잘 정착하지 못하도록 만들었습니다.
하지만 하나님의 메시지는 적어도 3세대가 지나는 70년의 포로시간을 말씀 하십니다.
그러므로 그곳에서 마음을 잡고 일상을 유지해야 합니다. 자유가 보장되는 속에서 종족을 보존하며 하나님의 때를 기다려야 합니다. 하나님의 징벌의 시간을 채워야 합니다.
심지어 잡혀간 성읍(바벨론)의 평안을 위해서 느부갓네살을 위하여 기도하라고 말합니다. 그래야 잡혀간 이스라엘 역시 평안할 수 있습니다. 힘든 때일수록 일상을 유지하는 것이 매우 중요합니다. 종종 힘들면 일상을 놓아 버리는 사람들이 있는데, 그럴수록 삶은 더욱 꼬이고 힘들어 집니다. 규칙적으로 나의 할 일을 이를 악물고 감당해야 합니다. 포로로 잡혀간 디아스포라(흩어진 유대인)들을 생각해 보십시오!
분명히 가족 중에 한 두명의 죽음을 목격했을 것입니다. 생소한 환경과 문화, 언어가 있는 이방의 나라로 끌려 왔습니다. 소망이 없고, 포기하고 싶고 두려웠을 것입니다. 그 때 임한 하나님의 메시지가 일상을 유지하라는 것입니다. 말하기 어려운 메시지이지만 반드시 그들에게 필요한 메시지입니다.
묵묵히 그냥 주어진 일을 하며 하루 하루를 버텨내며 살아가야 합니다. 반란이나 전쟁을 계획하거나 준비할 필요가 없습니다. 먹고, 자고, 일하고, 결혼하여 대를 잇는 것입니다. 위기 때 우리가 해야 할 일입니다.
두 번째는 미혹되지 말라 (8-9절)
2년만 버티면 된다는 거짓 선지자들과 점쟁이들은 물론, 자신의 꿈마저도 믿지 말라고 경고(8절)합니다. 사실 꿈은 하나님의 계시의 도구이기도 하지만 불완전합니다. 때론 내가 원하는 바를 투사하여 꿈으로 만들어 냅니다. 그러므로 절대 희망적인 메시지를 들어서는 안 됩니다. 현실을 직시해야 합니다. 현실을 도피해서는 안 됩니다. 미혹되는 이유는 힘들고 괴로운 현실을 부정하고, 피하고 싶은 마음 때문입니다. 정신을 똑바로 차리고 일상을 이어가야 합니다.
세 번째는 부르짖으라 (10-14절)
여호와께서는 포로기간이 70년이 될 것을 말씀 하십니다. 또한 반드시 예루살렘으로 돌아오게 하실 것을 약속하십니다. 인생을 향한 하나님의 생각을 하나님이 더 잘 아십니다. 그것은 평안이지 결코 재앙이 아닙니다. 미래와 희망을 주기를 원하십니다(11절). 재앙은 인간들이 하나님의 말씀에 순종하지 않은 결과입니다. 에스겔 선지자는 다음과 같이 전합니다.
너는 그들에게 말하라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라 나의 삶을 두고 맹세하노니
나는 악인이 죽는 것을 기뻐하지 아니하고 악인이 그의 길에서 돌이켜 떠나 사는 것을 기뻐하노라
이스라엘 족속아 돌이키고 돌이키라 너희 악한 길에서 떠나라 어찌 죽고자 하느냐 하셨다 하라 (겔 33:11)
구구절절 안타까운 하나님 아버지의 마음이 느껴지는 말씀입니다. 악인이 멸망하는 것도 안타까워 하시는 하나님이 택하신 백성이 멸망하는 것은 오죽하겠습니까?! 그러므로 선지자는 강력하게 기도할 것을 촉구합니다. 12-13절 내게 부르짖으며 내게 와서 기도하면… 너희가 온 마음으로 나를 구하면… 어디를 가든지 어떤 상황 가운데 있든지 하나님의 백성은 기도해야 합니다. 예배해야 합니다.
1차 바벨론 포로로 잡혀간 다니엘이 좋은 본보기 입니다. 일상을 유지하며, 하나님의 뜻을 구하고, 예배하며 기도한 사람입니다. 그는 급변하는 국제정세 속에서도 나라가 바뀌어도 총리인 다니엘은 바뀌지 않는 말도 안 되는 사건의 주인공이 됩니다. 기도 가운데 하나님을 만난 사람입니다!
예루살렘의 남은 자들에게 전하는 메시지 (15-19절)
15절은 21절과 더 자연스럽게 연결이 됩니다. 그래서 구약성경의 헬라어 번역본인 70인역(LXX)은 16-20절이 없습니다. 예루살렘의 남은 자들은 자신들은 의롭고, 포로로 잡혀간 자들은 죄가 많다고 착각했습니다. 하지만 예레미야의 메시지는 정반대입니다. 오히려 예루살렘의 남은 자들이 계속 하나님이 보낸 선지자의 말을 듣지 않으므로 결국에는 몹쓸 무화과 같게(17절) 될 것이라고 전합니다.
18절은 그들의 참담한 결과를 예언합니다.
해외동포인 우리들은 오늘 본문 말씀에 더욱 귀를 기울입시다. 일상을 유지하면서, 영적으로 깨어서 우리를 불안하게 하거나 헛된 마음을 가지게 하는 거짓 메시지에 미혹되지 맙시다. 그러기 위해서는 밤낮으로 하나님께 부르짖어야 합니다. 약속하셨습니다! 너희 기도를 듣고, 너희가 나를 찾을 것이요! 너희를 만나리라!
1 This is the text of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the surviving elders among the exiles and to the priests, the prophets and all the other people Nebuchadnezzar had carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. 2 (This was after King Jehoiachin and the queen mother, the court officials and the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the skilled workers and the artisans had gone into exile from Jerusalem.) 3 He entrusted the letter to Elasah son of Shaphan and to Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to King Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon. It said:
4 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6 Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. 7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” 8 Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not listen to the dreams you encourage them to have. 9 They are prophesying lies to you in my name. I have not sent them,” declares the Lord.
10 This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place. 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”
15 You may say, “The Lord has raised up prophets for us in Babylon,” 16 but this is what the Lord says about the king who sits on David’s throne and all the people who remain in this city, your fellow citizens who did not go with you into exile— 17 yes, this is what the Lord Almighty says: “I will send the sword, famine and plague against them and I will make them like figs that are so bad they cannot be eaten. 18 I will pursue them with the sword, famine and plague and will make them abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth, a curse and an object of horror, of scorn and reproach, among all the nations where I drive them. 19 For they have not listened to my words,” declares the Lord, “words that I sent to them again and again by my servants the prophets. And you exiles have not listened either,” declares the Lord.
Jeremiah Chapter 29 is made up of a couple of letters. 2 letters that Jeremiah sent to the people who were carried to exile from Jerusalem to Babylon (verses 4-14; 20-23), the letter that Shemaiah sent to Jerusalem, and the letter that Jeremiah wrote as a reply (verses 31-32)
Setting (verses 1-3) The writer is Jeremiah who stayed in Jerusalem and the receiver is all the people who have been dragged to Babylon. During that time (verse 2) Jehoiachin, son of Jehoiakim, and many leaders have gone into exile and Zedekiah became king and swore allegiance to Babylon. It was after the second Babylonian invasion in B.C. 597. King of Judah Zedekiah, who needed to pay tribute to Babylon, sends Elasah son of Shaphan and Gemariah son of Hilkiah as envoys. If the scholars are correct, Elasah is the brother of Ahigam who helped Jeremiah and Gemariah is the son of Hilkiah who was the high priest during King Joshia’s reign. These are the few friends of Jeremiah that he had and seemed to have been impressed by his message. So through them, Jeremiah sends a letter containing the message that he wanted to convey to his fellow countrymen.
Message to his fellow countrymen overseas (verses 4-14) This message needed to be heard by all of the people who have gone into exile to Babylon. We’ll look at it in 3 different parts.
Go on with your daily routine (verses 5-7) Jeremiah said, “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage. Increase in number there; do not decrease.” (verses 5-6) During that time, false prophets made the people in exile not be able to fully settle in Babylon by giving them false hope that Babylon would be destroyed in two years and that they would return to Jerusalem soon anyway. But God’s message speaks of 70 years in exile, almost 3 whole generations. Therefore, the people in exile needed to go on with their daily routine. They needed to wait for God’s timing. They needed to wait until they were fully punished.
God said to even pray for Nebuchadnezzar and peace of Babylon. Only then will the Israelites in exile be able to be in peace. No matter how hard times are, it is very important to go on with your normal routines. When times get tough, some people just give up but when you do that, life will get even harder. You have to endure by being on your normal routine. Think of the diaspora (the scattered Jews) who were in exile! They probably witnessed at least one or two people who have died in their family. They were dragged to a foreign land with an unfamiliar environment, culture, and language. They probably felt hopeless and wanted to give up. And that time was when God told them to go on with their daily routine. Although it was a tough message for them, they needed to hear this message. You have to endure day by day by going on with your daily routine. There is no need to prepare for rebellion or war. During times of crisis, all we need to do is eat, sleep, work, and marry.
Second is to not be fooled (verses 8-9) In verse 8, Jeremiah warns to not listen to the false prophets who are giving them false hope that they will be released in two years and also to not listen to his own dreams. It is true that dreams are revelations from God but they are imperfect. Sometimes I turn my own wants and needs into dreams. So they could not listen to a message of hope. You have to face reality and not escape reality. The reason for being deceived is due to the desire of denying and avoiding the painful reality. We all need to wake up and go on with our daily routine.
Third is to call on God (verses 10-14) Jehovah says that the period of captivity will be for 70 years. Jehovah promises to bring them back to Jerusalem. God knows God’s own thought about life the best. That is peace and never a disaster. God wishes to give hope and a future (verse 11). Disaster is the result of humans not obeying the word of God. Prophet Ezekiel said this.
As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, people of Israel?’ (Ezekiel 33:11)
This is a message from our God the father where we can feel God’s hurt for the people. God even feels pity for the wicked, so how bad would God feel when God’s own people are being destroyed? So the prophet asks us to pray with conviction.Verses 12-13 call on me and come and pray to me…….When you seek me with all of your heart…..whatever situation we are in, the people of God need to pray. We need to worship.
Daniel who was captured during the first Babylonian invasion is a good example. He is a person who continued to keep on with his daily routine, continued to seek the vision of God, and continued to worship and pray. Even during a rapidly changing international situation with everything in chaos, Daniel stays persistent and does not change. He is a person who truly met God through prayer!
Message for the ones who were left in Jerusalem (Verses 15-19) Verse 15 and verse 21 naturally flow together. So in the old testament of the Greek Translation LXX, verses 16-20 do not exist. The people who were left in Jerusalem were mistaken that they were the ones who were righteous and the ones who were in exile were sinners. But Jeremiah’s message was the complete opposite. Jeremiah says the ones who were left are the ones who do not obey the word of the Lord and will soon become like figs that are so bad that they cannot be eaten (verse 17).
Verse 18 prophecies their disastrous results.
As fellow Koreans who are overseas, we need to listen to this message carefully. Let us not be deceived by messages that make us anxious or afraid but let us keep our daily routine and spiritually stay awake. To accomplish that, we need to call on God during day and night. God promised us! I will listen to your prayer, You will seek me! And I will meet you!
