13 또한 너희 지체를 불의의 무기로 죄에게 내주지 말고 오직 너희 자신을 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살아난 자 같이 하나님께 드리며 너희 지체를 의의 무기로 하나님께 드리라
14 죄가 너희를 주장하지 못하리니 이는 너희가 법 아래에 있지 아니하고 은혜 아래에 있음이라

16 너희 자신을 종으로 내주어 누구에게 순종하든지 그 순종함을 받는 자의 종이 되는 줄을 너희가 알지 못하느냐 혹은 죄의 종으로 사망에 이르고 혹은 순종의 종으로 의에 이르느니라
17 하나님께 감사하리로다 너희가 본래 죄의 종이더니 너희에게 전하여 준 바 교훈의 본을 마음으로 순종하여
18 죄로부터 해방되어 의에게 종이 되었느니라
19 너희 육신이 연약하므로 내가 사람의 예대로 말하노니 전에 너희가 너희 지체를 부정과 불법에 내주어 불법에 이른 것 같이 이제는 너희 지체를 의에게 종으로 내주어 거룩함에 이르라
20 너희가 죄의 종이 되었을 때에는 의에 대하여 자유로웠느니라
21 너희가 그 때에 무슨 열매를 얻었느냐 이제는 너희가 그 일을 부끄러워하나니 이는 그 마지막이 사망임이라
22 그러나 이제는 너희가 죄로부터 해방되고 하나님께 종이 되어 거룩함에 이르는 열매를 맺었으니 그 마지막은 영생이라
23 죄의 삯은 사망이요 하나님의 은사는 그리스도 예수 우리 주 안에 있는 영생이니라
지금까지 사도 바울은 이신칭의의 교리를 주장하였고, 5장은 죄가 더할수록 그보다 더 넘치는 하나님의 은혜로 영생에 이르게 되는 영화로운 승리로 마무리 했습니다. 구원을 위해서는 우리가 아무것도 할 수 없으며, 오직 하나님의 은혜로 구원을 받는다는 것입니다. 이러한 바울의 주장은 대적자들의 논리적 공격을 유발할 수 있습니다.
교회를 다니지 않는 친구들이 늘 공격하는 단골 메뉴입니다. 기독교는 참 좋겠다! 평생 하고 싶은 대로 막 살다가 죽기 얼마 전에 회개만하면 구원받는다며? 입니다. 뭐라고 답변해야 할까요? 그들의 질문의 의도를 알기에 맞다 고 하기도 그렇고, 아니다 라고 하자니 그들의 말이 교리적으로는 사실이고…
오늘 본문인 로마서 6장이 바로 이 질문에 대한 사도 바울의 답변입니다.
칭의와 영화로운 승리를 말했던 사도는 이제 가장 중요한 과정인 성화의 단계를 설명합니다.
1-4절 성화의 시작 : 죄에 대해 죽은 우리
사도는 대적자들의 이러한 공격을 이미 파악하고 있습니다. 죄가 더한 곳에 은혜가 더욱 넘치니까 더욱 죄를 행하자! 라는 주장에 단호하게 그럴 수 없다! 고 대답합니다. 교회 안 다니는 친구들의 주장대로 은혜가 있다고 평생 막 살면 안 된다는 것입니다. 그런데 막 살면 안 되는 이유가 행위 구원을 생각하는 사람들과는 다릅니다. 그것은 우리의 존재 자체가 이미 죄에 대하여 죽은 자이기 때문입니다. 이것은 죄와 상관 없는, 죄와 분리되었다는 의미입니다.
어떻게 죄에 대하여 죽었을까요? 예수와 합하여 세례를 받음으로, 곧 그의 죽으심과 합하여 세례를 받음으로 죄에 대하여는 죽은 존재가 된 것입니다. 여기서 세례는 성령세례와 그것을 형식화한 물세례를 통합한 의미입니다. 성령세례를 받은 진짜 믿음으로 물세례를 받은 것을 의미합니다.
5-11절 살아 있는 자로 여길지어다
죄에 대한 죽음의 중요함은 부활과 연결됩니다. 죽음 없이는 부활도 없기 때문입니다. 그럼으로 우리가 죽는 것은 너무 중요합니다. 이것은 죄의 몸이 죽어 다시는 죄에게 종 노릇 하지 않는 것을 의미합니다.
노예였던 자가 죽으면 그 모든 구속에서 벗어나는 것과 같습니다. 그리고 그렇게 죽었던 자가 이제는 믿음 안에서 자유의 몸으로 부활하는 것입니다. 그것이 바로 예수 그리스도와 함께 살아나는 것입니다.
예수님의 부활은 그 동안 전인류를 장악했던 사망의 권세를 깨뜨리는 사건이었습니다. 그러므로 이제 사망은 더 이상 예수님 앞에서 힘을 쓸 수가 없습니다.
11절 사도 바울은 우리의 정체성에 대하여 알려줍니다. 먼저는 죄에 대하여 죽은 자 입니다. 죄와 분리되어 죄를 지을 수 없는 상태로 여기라는 것입니다. 이것이 죄에 대하여 죽은 자인 것입니다. 동시에 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님께 대하여는 살아 있는 자로 여길지어다 “여길지어다” 는 현재명령형으로 계속 그렇게 생각하라는 것입니다. 스스로를 계속하여 하나님 앞에서 살아있는 것으로 여기라는 것입니다. 그러면 우리의 삶이 어때야 하겠습니까? 죄에 대해서는 죽은 자로, 하나님께 대하여 살아 있는 자로 여긴다면? 이것이 바로 우리의 성화의 근거요, 은혜로 구원을 받지만 세상 사람들보다 훨씬 더 선하고 아름답게 살아야 할 이유입니다. 구원을 위한 선행이 아닌, 이미 구원 받은 자로서의 고귀한 삶 말입니다.
12-14절 너희 지체를 의의 무기로 하나님께 드리라
성화의 삶은 치열한 전투의 연속입니다. 이 전투에서 승리하는 비결은 우리 자신과 육체를 하나님께 드리는 것입니다. 예수의 은혜를 모르던 시절에는 육체로 온갖 죄악을 저질렀지만, 이제 예수의 은혜를 받은 자는 그 육체를 통하여 하나님을 섬기는 일에 사용해야 합니다.
우리는 더 이상 죄가 우리를 지배할 수 없는 은혜 아래 있는 존재입니다.
15-19절 의의 종이 되어 거룩함에 이르라
사도는 다시 1절의 질문으로 돌아갑니다. 은혜 아래 있다는 것이 결코 방종을 허락하는 의미가 아닙니다.
사실 우리에게는 자유의지가 있습니다. 그리고 그것으로 무엇을 따르고 순종할지 결정할 수 있습니다. 하지만 결과는 자신이 책임져야 합니다. 죄를 선택하면 사망에 이르고, 순종을 선택하면 의에 이릅니다.
사도는 성령의 감격에 겨워 하나님을 찬양합니다. 본래 죄악의 종이었는데, 복음을 듣고 순종하여 조로부터 해방되어 의의 종이 되었다니!
이어서 사도는 종으로 비유하여 말하는 것에 대하여 미안함을 밝힙니다(19절). 그럼에도 이해를 쉽게 하기 위하여 어쩔 수 없습니다. 이제 은혜를 입었으니, 더 이상 우리의 삶과 육체를 방치하여 부정과 불법에 내어주지 말고, 의의 종으로 거룩함에 이루라고 힘있게 권면합니다.
은혜를 입은 자들은 이제 거룩함을 이루어야 합니다. 구원의 서정, 곧 구원의 단계 중에서 성화만이 하나님과 인간의 협력 사역입니다. 칭의를 얻은 성도는 영화로운 단계에 이르도록, 곧 천국에 들어갈 때까지 날마다 거룩에 힘을 써야 합니다. 이것은 그냥 되는 것이 아니라, 노력하고 훈련을 해야 합니다.
20-23절 그 마지막은 영생이라
우리는 날마다 어떻게 거룩을 위하여 애를 쓰고 있나요? 어떤 훈련을 하고 있습니까?
나의 감정대로, 육신의 요구대로 삶이 흘러 가도록 내버려 두지 마십시오! 그 결국은 사망입니다.
하지만 의에게 종으로 드려 의를 이루려 노력한다면, 그 결과는 생명입니다.
칭의를 얻은 거룩한 백성은 이전의 죄의 삶을 부끄러워합니다. 죄의 종이었을 때는 오히려 의에 대하여 자유롭습니다. 하나님을 모르는 자들을 보십시오! 죄에 대한 부끄러움이 전혀 없습니다. 의에 대해서 너무 자유로운 것입니다. 물론 그 끝은 사망입니다.
그러나 우리는 죄로부터 해방되어 하나님께 종이 되어 거룩함에 이르는 열매, 곧 성화의 열매를 맺었으니 그 마지막은 영생입니다. 여기서 성화는 결코 공로가 아닌 칭의의 결과적인 열매인 것을 명심해야 합니다.
죄의 삯은 사망이요 하나님의 은사는 그리스도 예수 우리 주 안에 있는 영생이니라 그냥 내버려 두면 우리도 다른 불신자들처럼 죄의 값으로 사망을 지불해야 했습니다. 하지만 하나님의 은혜(카리스마)는 예수를 통하여 우리에게 영생을 주십니다.
우리 기독교는 평생 하고 싶은 대로 막 살다가 마지막에 회개하면 천국에 가는 사람들입니다. 그런데 평생 하고 싶은 것이 예배고 형제사랑이고 구제이며, 선교입니다. 그렇게 막 살고도 마지막에는 내가 죄인입니다! 고백하는 사람들입니다. 그리고 천국에 갑니다. 그래서 나는 기독교가 좋습니다!
1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.
8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. 18 You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
19 I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. 20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
So far Apostle Paul proclaiming justification by faith, And in chapter 5, he concludes it with a great victory of being through the grace of God, we will receive eternal life.
.Salvation is something that we can not earn, we can only receive it through the grace of God. Paul’s opinion like this could have caused attacks from his opposers. This is something that atheists always say! Being a Christian must feel good! You can do whatever you want until a couple days before you die, and repent to receive salvation. Right? What kind of response should we give? We can’t really say that statement is true but we can’t say that it is false because it is technically true.
Romans 6 is when Apostle Paul responds to this very question.
Verses 1-4: The beginning of Sanctification: We who are dead to sin
Apostle Paul knew that he was going to be attacked with questions like this by his opposers. When they are claiming: Where there is more sin, it is overflowing with grace, so let’s sin even more!, Apostle Paul is putting his foot down and proclaiming you can not! We cannot live however we want just because we have grace. But the reason that we can not live however we want is different from the people who try to receive salvation through mere deeds. That is because we have already died to sin. This verse is saying that we have already been separated from sin.
How did we die to sin? With Jesus we received baptism, thus we were also buried with Jesus making us dead to sin. Here the meaning of baptism is a combination of baptism through the holy spirit and baptism through water. So with the real faith that they have received through baptism of the holy spirit, they have been baptized with water
Verses 5-11 Must consider ourselves alive to God
The importance of being dead to sin is connected with the resurrection. Without death, there is no resurrection. So the fact that we died is very important. This death symbolizes that no longer does our body need to be a servant to sin.
When a slave dies, that slave will be freed from slavery. And that person who died is resurrecting to a person of faith, a person of freedom. That is how you become alive with Jesus christ.
The resurrection of Jesus was an event that completely shattered the power of death. So death can no longer be of power in front of Jesus.
Verse 11 Apostle Paul is telling us of our identity. We are dead to sin. We have been separated from sin and therefore have lost the ability to sin. These are people who have been dead to sin. At the same time, You must consider yourselves alive to God in Christ Jesus. “Must consider” is a command in the present tense to keep thinking that way. It is telling us to consider yourselves to live before god. So what should our life look like? What does our life look like when we are dead to sin, and alive to God? This is the reason why we need to live even better lives then the people of the world although we are the ones who received the grace of God. Not mere good deeds to try to receive salvation, but living a noble life as people who have already received salvation.
Verse 12-14 Give yourselves to God as weapons of righteousness
The life of sanctification is an endless battle. The secret to winning this endless battle is to surrender ourselves to God. When we didn’t know the grace of Jesus Christ we sinned so much but now since we have received the grace of God, we need to use our bodies to serve God.
We are beings who can be no longer controlled by the power of sin, because we have grace.
Verses 15-19 Become a slave to righteousness to become holy
Apostle Paul goes back to his original question in verse 1. Being under grace does not mean that we are allowing all this sin to happen right before our eyes.
We actually have free will. And we can choose who to follow and obey. But we have to take responsibility of what happens next. If we choose sin, that will lead to death, but if we choose to obey, that will lead to righteousness.
Apostle Paul worships God under the power of the holy spirit. Isn’t it amazing that we were once slaves to sin, but once we heard the gospel, we obeyed and we became free!
Apostle Paul continues to speak in verse 19 about being a slave in an apologizing tone. But to make it more understandable, there is not much more he could have said. Paul urges us to stop being slaves to impurity and wickedness but to become slaves to righteousness which would lead to holiness.
So those who have received grace must be holy. In the steps of salvation, sanctification is the only step that requires work together between us and God. For those who have been justified through faith, they will need to work on being holy. So until the day that we go to heaven, we have to work everyday on being holyThis will not be accomplished over night but we need to put effort in and train.
Verses 20-23 End result will be eternal life
How we do try to be holy day by day? What kind of training are you doing?
Do not live by mere emotions and wants of your body. That will ultimately lead to death.
But if you work on trying to become a slave to righteousness, that will lead to eternal life.
When the people who have been justified through faith look at their previous life of isn, they become ashamed. When they were slaves to sin, they were free when it came to righteousness. Look at the people who do not know God! They are not ashamed at all of their sins. They are too free when it comes to righteousness. And of course this will lead to death.
But we have been freed from sin and since we are the fruit of holiness and fruit of sanctification, the end result is eternal life.
For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. If we just let it go and become like the other nonbelievers we too would have had to pay for our sins with death. But through the grace of God, we received eternal life.
Christianity is a religion where all your life you can do whatever you want and right before you die, you can repent and go to heaven. But I believe the things that we want to do all our lives are worship, love, and missions. Even though we might live like this, we still confess that we are sinners. And then we go to heaven. That is why I like Christianity!
